New York Comic Con 2012: Guillermo del Toro and Grant Morrison Announce New Projects for Legendary Comics

New York Comic Con 2012: Guillermo del Toro and Grant Morrison Announce New Projects for Legendary ComicsDirector Guillermo del Toro and comic creator Grant Morrison were on hand at Legendary Comics’ pre-New York Comic Con media event to announce two all-new projects for the comics division of Legendary Entertainment.

From the Press Release:
The announcements come on the heels of the launch of the first volume of The Tower Chronicles, Legendary’s first original IP release written by Matt Wagner and drawn by Simon Bisley. With these two projects added to the slate, Legendary is poised for an impressive 2013 with projects also being released by Mark Waid, Max Brooks, and Shane Davis (Shadow Walk) and J. Michael Straczynski (The Majestic Files) as well as further releases from The Tower Chronicles.

Pacific Rim Graphic Novel: As fans continue to soak in all new details regarding Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' upcoming motion picture release Pacific Rim, del Toro used New York Comic Con to announce the Pacific Rim graphic novel. A must-read for anyone who wants to see the movie, the graphic novel will serve as a prequel, providing important details on the characters and the lead up to the story arc of the movie. Written by the film’s writer, Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans), the graphic novel is written in three distinct parts – covering the in-world history from the first attack up to just before the movie.

Each part tells a complete episode of that history, dipping selectively in and out of character backstories and sometimes focusing on new characters who aren't necessarily in the movie. The idea is to expand the universe and explore how this war has affected not only our heroes but the world beyond the film. That said, Stacker Pentecost's (Idris Elba) origin will figure into all three parts, tracking his journey to high-ranking commander.

Annihilator: Morrison brings to the pages a thrilling story starring wild-living screenwriter Ray Spass, who has one last chance to save his career as he struggles to write a new studio tent-pole movie, Annihilator.

The film centers around the incredible adventures of Max Nomax; a sci-fi rebel anti-hero who’s condemned to a haunted prison orbiting a supermassive black hole, following an epic struggle against the all-knowing, all–powerful artificial life form VADA and his squad of deadly Annihilators. Found guilty of the "greatest crime in history," Nomax has vowed to clear his name by discovering a cure for death itself and resurrecting his lost love.

But with deadlines looming and a recently-diagnosed brain tumor, Spass is running out of time and inspiration – until the real Max Nomax mysteriously appears in the world of 21st century Los Angeles with no memory of how he got there, only a terrifying warning of imminent destruction and a mission for Ray Spass.

Ray’s tumor is the key—it contains all the information of Nomax’s adventures, uploaded into Ray’s head before Nomax made his great escape. Now Ray has to finish his screenplay in order to get the information out of his head and shrink the tumor. Nomax needs Ray to finish the screenplay so he can remember how to defeat VADA and ultimately save the universe from extinction – if Makro, the unstoppable rogue Annihilator, doesn’t kill get to them first, that is.

But who or what is Max Nomax really? And why is it the more we learn, the less we want to know? A heart-stopping suspense thriller. A love story. An impossible mystery. A tale of vengeance and defiance – bargains and consequences - life and death – good and evil.

L.A. Horror Fest founding partner James Groth tipped us off to the Los Angeles premiere of Sean Stone’s found-footage flick Greystone Park, which will take place at 8pm Saturday, October 27th, at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, CA. Read on for details regarding the two-day film festival!

“It’s an honor that Sean Stone has chosen to showcase his highly anticipated feature with us,” said Grother of Greystone Park director, writer and actor Sean Stone, son of filmmaker Oliver Stone.

“This will join our list of seven independent features submitted by filmmakers all over the world, as well as four hour-long blocks of short films,” added L.A. Horror Fest founder Thomas Schroeder.

Based on true events, Greystone Park (according to the film’s synopsis) is based on true events, and "follows three aspiring filmmakers trying to document unexplainable events in an abandoned insane asylum known as Greystone Park. Urban legend has it that anyone who ventures into the forsaken hospital will suffer the consequences and face their own horrors. The trio stumble across a mysterious realm of escaped patients, ghosts and demonic shadows as they try to uncover the truth behind Greystone Park."

Following the screening there will be a Q&A with Stone.

The two-day event at Raleigh Studios starts Friday, October 26, at 3pm with the first independent feature starting at 4pm. In addition to the independent features competing at this year’s L.A. Horror Fest Halloween Party, there will be entertainment, vendors, food, and the “Beer, Blood and Wine Garden.” 100.3 FM The Sound will be in attendance, setting the music vibe prior to Rhythm Coffin’s live musical performance. Roundtable Interview: Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken Talk Seven Psychopaths and More

    $

    0

Last week Dread Central had the opportunity to catch up with two of the seven "psychos" - Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell - from CBS Films' upcoming darkly comedic flick Seven Psychopaths.

Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, Seven Psychopaths also stars Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish, Olga Kurylenko and Tom Waits. The film follows a struggling Hollywood writer (Farrell) who gets mixed up in his friends' crazy scheme after they kidnap the beloved Shih-Tzu belonging to a murderous gangster (Harrelson) who will stop at nothing to get his precious pooch back.

Check out the highlights from our roundtable interview with the always entertaining Walken and Rockwell, and look for Seven Psychopaths in theaters everywhere on October 12th!

Question: Well, you guys have both worked with so many directors throughout your careers; what did you see from Martin's sensibilities that suited you well in working with him?

Christopher Walken: I don't know; that would be more of a question for this guy (Sam). But no, I like him very much, and they say casting is some big percentage of movies and I think that's true. If the casting is right, then you don't have to work as hard because whatever you are is what they're looking for.

So I don’t know; I know there's something about my personality that's suited for this movie. Just something about Martin's taste I guess.

Question: On the subject of casting, Mr. Walken, were you always offered the role that you took in Seven Psychopaths or did you look at some of the other roles, too?

Christopher Walken: Nah, there was really one role I could play; I'm much older than the rest of them. I suppose I could have played the Tom (Waits) part - maybe - but it's better with him.

Reporter: Or even Woody's (Harrelson) part--

Sam Rockwell: (to Walken) Yeah, that's the part you'd usually be playing; that's why it's genius that it's not you in the movie.

Christopher Walken: Yeah, if I was THAT old and THAT crazy about my dog, well…geez (laughs), this movie would have ended up an entirely different animal I think.

Question: Sam, can you talk about your character and his relationship with Colin in the film? A lot of the comedic moments in the film come from the relationship between you guys; what was the approach you both took in fleshing out these characters?

Sam Rockwell: Colin and I had met each other ten years previous, but we didn’t really know each other all that well. Chris and I already knew each other from a play that we did together so he wanted Colin and I to bond so the three of us (Sam, Colin and Martin) all went to Joshua Tree and rented a house there. At one point, we stopped at a rest stop and Colin picked out the bear hat, the one I wear in the movie- he found it and put it on my head so he told me to eat Cheetos and chocolate milk. That might even be in the movie (laughs).

But yeah, I had always thought that while working on it; we were just talking about how Chris was part of the original stage production of "Hurlyburly," the part that Sean Penn plays in the movie. It was the relationship between that character and Chazz Palminteri's is very similar to the relationship between Billy and Marty in this movie; the out-of-work actor and the struggling writer who are sort of co-dependent on each other.

Question: We were talking to Martin about your (Christopher) unusual pronunciation of the word 'hallucinogens' in the film and he wasn't quite sure if that was how you would normally say it or that was purposeful on your part?

Christopher Walken: Oh- you mean "hal-you-cin-o-gens." (laughs) I mean, I come from a time where that's the correct way to say that word.

Sam Rockwell: You mean British? (laughs)

Question: You both are known for creating such memorable characters, what for you did you find memorable about these characters in particular?

Sam Rockwell: Wait, can you say that again?

Question: You both are known for playing memorable characters-

Sam Rockwell: Okay, good; I just wanted to hear that part again (laughs). No but seriously- thank you.

Christopher Walken: I know what you're saying; I always get told that by a lot of people who have seen it, but we're all kind of in the business in this movie so I'll be interested to see how regular audiences react. You know, I had to go to the dentist two mornings ago, and when I walked in, the dentist says to me, "Looking forward to October 12th." I said, "What? What's happening then?" (laughs) I knew the movie was opening in October, but then he says to me, "You know, your movie is opening," and I said, "Oh yeah, right."

So when him and his family go and see the movie, that's when I can get an impression about this movie. When I'm on the road making a movie in another city, on my day off I always go to the movies. Always.

Sam Rockwell: He saw Puss in Boots while we were making this. (laughs)

Christopher Walken: I did, I did! I liked it. But I love going to the movies- you get a ticket, you sit there, and to me it's very interesting to be around people who aren't personally invested in you in any way. They're just going to the movies.

Sam Rockwell: What's memorable for me- I mean, I hate to be 'Mister Whatever' but they experience that we had during the play and with Colin, Woody and everybody on the film it was such a great experience. We took our jobs very seriously but we also had a lot of fun; that memory, that's what is really memorable for me.

But you know, who knows? Of course we want the movie to be a smash hit, but who knows what's going to happen? I have memories of films that nobody ever saw that I was very proud of, and those are still great memories. It would be great if people saw this movie; it's a cool movie.

Question: Were there any movies in particular that inspired you with this role, this performance?

Sam Rockwell: I think there were; I actually watched Colin in In Bruges a couple of times because I thought the rhythms and the characters were similar. There's tons of stuff that this guy (Colin) has done throughout his career; you know, I'm like Spider-Man, stealing things from actors to put in the web arsenal (laughs). They become like spider webs, ready at any moment.

I did watch that documentary Grizzly Man; I thought watching that guy was helpful to watch. Also, Kathy Bates in Misery- I watched that because her obsession with James Caan...

Christopher Walken: Grizzly Man- that guy was crazy.

Sam Rockwell: Oh yeah, when he talks to the park rangers (laughs). With bananas or something like that...

    Christopher Walken: Disturbing.

Sam Rockwell: But yeah, I actually found that helpful for when I did the play with Martin because my character in that was a nerdier version of Billy. He was a hotel clerk and his character was a bit more like Woody's character here.

Christopher Walken: You know, there was this desk clerk once where when you'd take the elevator, you'd come to find out that he would go up the stairs and get off on your floor while you're on the way up. Then he'd follow you down the hall to your room- I just remember that guy so vividly and he reminded me of that character in the play.

Sam Rockwell: Oh yeah; that character, again, was more like Woody's character or like Ralph Fiennes in In Bruges. The gasoline, the whole thing- and a suitcase of cut-off hands.

Christopher Walken: I said to Martin once in rehearsal, "How did you ever come to write a play about a guy who goes around with a suitcase filled with cut-off hands?" and he said, "You know, I was just sitting there one day and thought to myself, 'I wonder what it would be like for a guy who went all over the place with a suitcase filled with hands.'" It's as simple as that.

Question: What did you guys find to be the most surprising aspect of the script?

Christopher Walken: The whole thing is surprising; whenever you read a script that has big chunks of intelligent and juicy dialogue, you know- that's pretty unusual. I have a lot of trouble with scripts, I have a lot of trouble imagining things while I'm reading them. Sometimes if you're lucky before you start shooting the actors will sit around a table and they read the script out loud. For me, that's a big moment because no matter how many times I read a script before I get there, I can't see it. But the moment that I get there, that's when I finally can see it.
Obviously, this was a terrific script but I couldn't imagine it.

Question: Mr. Walken, you just mentioned those juicy bits of dialogue; is that something specifically you seek out? So many of your performances have these really great dialogues.

Christopher Walken: You always look for good stuff. What I meant when I said that was that very few scripts have that kind of focus on what people are saying. Movies can be a lot of things, but they're usually not about dialogue; you know, the kind of dialogue that tells you where you are and where you're going.

But you don't get really smart, fun stuff to say all that often.

Sam Rockwell: Fun stuff to say? Yeah, but I think good material seeks him (Christopher) out because he's so good at those monologues. Like Biloxi Blues, True Romance, Pulp Fiction with the watch shoved up the... (laughs). Man, he's great at that.

Christopher Walken: Yeah, but there aren't a lot of screenwriters who do that.

Sam Rockwell: Oh I know they don't do that, but when you have a specialty, and you're good at that, so they find you. That's no accident.

Christopher Walken: Yeah, I suppose that's true, but I've also made four studio movie musicals over the years, and these days they just don't make those kinds of movies now. If you're an actor and you can tap dance a little bit, you can be in that movie.

Red Carpet Report: Dread Central at The Walking Dead Season Three Premiere

    $

    0

Last week Dread Central was on the red carpet for the upcoming Season Three premiere of "The Walking Dead," where we had a chance to speak with many of the cast and crew in attendance about what fans can expect when the new season kicks off on AMC this Sunday, October 14th.

Check your local listings for exact times by you... and yes, sorry DISH customers!

While working the press line, we had the opportunity to speak with both executive producer Gale Anne Hurd and showrunner Glen Mazzara as well as several cast members including Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, Chandler Riggs, Lauren Cohan and Emily Kinney. Read on to see what everyone had to say about the upcoming third season of "The Walking Dead," their loyal fans and much more.

    Andrew Lincoln ("Rick Grimes"):

On What Changes We'll See in Rick for Season Three: The one thing that has been tossed around the writers' room for the last few years now is, what is Rick's breaking point? And you will find out this season. Things are going to get very dark for all of us before we even get to our mid-season break. I can't wait to see what happens in the second half; I don't even know yet in fact.

    Gale Anne Hurd (Executive Producer):

Why "The Walking Dead" Resonates So Strongly with Fans Worldwide: First of all, we have fantastic underlying material in Robert Kirkman's comic; it's now in fact one of the most successful series of all time. Issue 100 sold over 350,000 issues, which is just amazing. So what I think really resonates with people is the cast of characters. Their likability and performances make it easy for viewers to put themselves in their shoes and ask, 'What would I do in this situation? Who would I be like the most if there were zombies?' and that's all relatable stuff.

When you make that kind of emotional investment in a television series, you want everyone to know about it and to watch it, too, so our die-hard fans from the very beginning have been wonderful about getting people they know, maybe people who wouldn't necessarily watch a show about zombies, interested because these are really thought-provoking stories and characters to watch each week.

Discussing the Tonal Differences for Season Three: There's not a huge tonal change because we always take everything in the show as dead-real so that doesn't change at all really. But the difference for Season Three is that we now have a contrast between the town of Woodbury, the Governor's community, and our survivors. You get to see the tensions as they're building between the two groups and see how they clash eventually. It's going to be something pretty remarkable.

Red Carpet Report: Dread Central at the Walking Dead Season Three Premiere

Related Story: Glen Mazzara Talks Possible Feature Film Extension of The Walking Dead

    Danai Gurira ("Michonne"):

Her Thoughts on the Fan Anticipation Surrounding Michonne for Season Three: It is really cool; I love that she's this entity in this world because it was very strange for me as an actress to step into this role that already had this huge fanbase but had never been a living character before. There is a certain level of pressure I think, but it's also pretty amazing because the fans are so incredibly supportive of this show; they've been so positive about my involvement since the announcement despite not really even seeing me in action. It's amazing.

What She Loves about Playing Such a Badass: She's an intense chick, you know, and she's had to do a lot of things to survive so you have to kind of live like that. That's an intense realm to be in for a long time; that's a lot of energy to step into and have to bring on set every single day. But I loved connecting to her intensity.

I also love that she functions from this sort of level of clarity where she always seems to know what she has to do, when she has to do it, why, how- those kinds of things. She's not 'wobbly' at all; Michonne is very specific.

    Glen Mazzara (Showrunner):

On Whether or Not He Faces Any Added Pressure as the Fandom Surrounding "The Walking Dead" Grows: You know what? We have such a terrific team of writers, producers, cast and crew, and one of the things I try to do as the showrunner is make this a collaborative process. I want to hear what people say and what they like and don't like. So our internal process revolves around this idea of a continuous test audience, and nothing gets filmed until we all love it and we think that the fans would love it, too. All I can do as a filmmaker or a storyteller is make the best possible work that I can put forward.

Discussing 'Going Darker' for Season Three: Things get pretty dark for everyone; it's less about the theoretical issues like 'What does all this mean? How did it start?' and more about 'Hey, you're in my way of what I want, and I'm not afraid to kill you to get it' so things are going to get more intense. Definitely.

His Thoughts on the Hopeful Nature of a Show About the Zombie Apocalypse: This show is really about hope and always has been. To me, it's about a group of survivors - a family that's been forced together - and so you have to care about those characters. You, as a viewer, have to have a vested interest in wanting to see them survive this ordeal. In some episodes there are losses of course - big losses - but there's also huge wins, and that's essentially the human experience whether there's zombies or not.

    Chandler Riggs ("Carl"):

Discussing the Biggest Changes in Carl for Season Three: I think Carl is having to put all that stuff with Shane and Dale behind him because if he doesn't, he'll break down and won't be able to live in that world anymore. So I think he's trying to move on from that. But I do have a lot of physical scenes this time, which is cool. Last season I think we developed our characters in different ways, and for this season we all got to be a lot more physical. That was a big change to me.

I actually don't even have a stunt double so I get to do all my stunts myself; it's pretty awesome.

On Why Carl Is Never in the House When He's Supposed to Be: You know, I don't really know. I guess because he's a normal kid and never listens (laughs); you'd think he would with zombies all around, but nope. I think it's pretty awesome, though, that I'm my own meme and I'm on t-shirts now, too. It's so cool. I think it's pretty funny really.

Red Carpet Report: Dread Central at the Walking Dead Season Three Premiere

    Lauren Cohan ("Maggie"):

Maggie's Evolution in Season Three: The place that Maggie is at in Season Three is that she is still the same young woman she was at the start of Season Two except that she's now rising to these new challenges of life on the road and becoming a stronger woman. She's scared, but she's strong and wants to survive at all costs.

I'm going to have really great character stuff to do involving a lot of different characters, which is fantastic. Maggie is also getting more physical, which really excites me because I get to explore new sides of her character that I hadn't been able to before. She definitely goes through some huge emotional challenges, too.

    Emily Kinney ("Beth"):

What Fans Can Expect for Beth in Season Three: You know, once Beth went down that route (suicide) last season and decided that's not what she wanted, she's decided that she has a lot to live for so we see her a bit more hopeful in Season Three. Despite everything that's happening around her, she still wants to find something to live for, and a lot of that is her family. I do get to take on some zombies, too - maybe not like you'd expect because we all have our different roles and we all play them in different ways - but I did have to deal with a lot more physicality to my role for Season Three. It was great!

A sleek new website and trailer have just come online for the upcoming film The Butterfly Room. And when you see a cast that features names like Barbara Steele, Heather Langenkamp and Ray Wise, you know you've got to give it a look.

In addition to the actors listed above, you'll also see P.J. Soles, Adrienne King, Erica Leerhsen, Camille Keaton and James Karen. How's that for an impressive cast? The film is directed by Jonathan Zarantonello. The movie won Dresden's Cinestrange and the Youth Award at the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival and is now screening in Sitges, where Barbara Steele has handed out the Méliès d'Or prize for Best European Fantastic Film.

Check out the trailer below and for more information check out the official website for The Butterfly Room.

    Synopsis
Ann, a reclusive elegant lady, with an obsession for butterflies, is surprisingly befriended by the eerily beautiful young Alice. Using her seductive innocence, Alice establishes a disturbing mother-daughter relationship with Ann. Lured into her twisted world, Ann soon discovers that she is not the only recipient of the girl's affections.

Confronted by Alice's other lady friends, Ann's shock awakens a dark, hidden past, unchaining a spiral of madness: a series of brutal and bizarre crimes that Ann will have to commit to preserve her harmless and deceptive appearances. The only one who recognizes there's something unsettling about Ann, is nine year old Julie, her next door neighbor's daughter.

With the inevitable curiosity of a child, Julie begins to explore the corners of Ann's apartment, discovering a dark secret hidden in the walls of the forbidden butterfly room. No one believes what she's seen except for Ann's estranged daughter, Dorothy. Horrified, she realizes that the fate of the young girl lies in her hands. To save both Julie, and herself, she must summon up the courage to confront an evil that has haunted her for years.

With special effects created by Academy Award winning AFX Studio and elegant and refined visuals, in contrast with the sickness of the story, the Butterfly Room is an all-female story, an American thriller, with an European soul.

Another Hex Placed on Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' Release Date

    $
    0
    0

Paramount is once again shuffling the release date of Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. This time the change is only a few weeks as opposed to a whole year, but that doesn’t mean there’s not still plenty of time between now and then to push it back more.

As you may recall, the Paramount and MGM supernatural action fantasy starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the Grimm fairy tale brother and sister all grown up and turned gun-toting witch hunters after wicked witch Famke Janssen got bumped a whole year from March 12, 2012, to January 11, 2013. At the time the explanation was that the studio wanted to hold off releasing the film until after the summer, when they hoped Renner’s roles in The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy would make him a bigger box office draw. That Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has now been pushed back two whole weeks seems to indicate the studio brass aren’t convinced that Renner’s roles as “Hawkeye” and “Not Matt Damon” have made him a bankable enough star to open an R-rated dark fantasy flick that looks like a Stephen Sommers fever dream against Ryan Gosling in a fedora (Gangster Squad) and scene-chewing conmen Al Pacino and Christopher Walken (Stand Up Guys).

According to Deadline, the new January 25, 2013 release date pits the witch hunters against Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez in the crime drama Parker and a slew of famous actors and directors in the comedic anthology Movie 43. Not entirely sure if that increases its odds or not.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters will be opening in 2D, 3D, and on IMAX screens come January 25th, assuming, of course, that the release date doesn’t get pushed back yet again.

Expect more soon, but for now keep an eye on the official Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D website!

THE THING by The Black Ink Warlock, a.k.a. Justin Bartlett.

Justin Bartlett applies boundless visual style to depictions of the arcane. His developed portfolio representing clients of various trades exposes an illustrative language often derived from the occult, where theology and religion meet strife. Here he has mastered visual manipulation of his equally imaginative clients within several genres of extreme music. With pen and ink, Bartlett renders visions unseen by the naked eye, awakening apparitions as ambiguous as those creatures created by Edgar Allen Poe or ideas fostered by Aleister Crowley. Self-taught, the illustrator/designer has developed a style that's equally recognizable as it is versatile. Bartlett's work has been selected for worldwide gallery exhibitions, which lead to creating promotional artwork for Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed 3” video game viral campaign and conceptual artwork for the film “The Raven.” Additionally, his illustrations have cloaked the pages of Vice Magazine, and has been featured in Illustration Now! and 3X3 Magazine.

Could The Creature from the Black Lagoon remake be crawling out of the depths of development hell? Sometimes we wish the powers-that-be would just leave well enough alone, but alas... a writer has been tapped.

THR reports Dave Kajganich, who wrote the Daniel Craig-Nicole Kidman thriller The Invasion several years ago, has been tapped to pen Universal’s remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

The 1954 movie centered on a prehistoric water-breathing humanoid monster that lived in a remote Amazonian river and a group of scientists that want to study him.

More on this as it comes.
