While we still wait patiently for the feature film we're all craving, Warner Brothers dropped us a line to let us know that Season 2 of the wildly popular web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy is well on its way for the new year!

From the Press Release
A second season of the hit live-action web series "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" is currently in production in Los Angeles and will debut worldwide in Q2 2013 exclusively on Machinima, the number one entertainment network on YouTube. Based on the best-selling “Mortal Kombat” videogame franchise, Kevin Tancharoen (“Mortal Kombat: Legacy”) returns to direct and co-write "Mortal Kombat: Legacy 2" alongside writers Josh Baizer and Marshall Johnson (“Dead Loss”).

The first season of "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" was one of the most-viewed web series of 2011 with more than 60 million views to date on Machinima. In the second season the saga continues as Liu Kang and Ermac join the ranks of fighters introduced in the first season of the web series including Kenshi, Kung Lao, Kuai Lang, Stryker, Kitana, Mileena, Johnny Cage, Scorpion and Sub Zero. This new season will uncover the rivalries and histories of these fierce warriors as Raiden and his recruits clash against the dark forces of Outworld. The epic battle for Earthrealm has finally begun!

"Fans are in for a real treat with the second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy," said Tancharoen. "With added visual effects and storylines that dive deeper into our warriors as they make their way to the tournament, we’re taking this series to a whole new level. I'm really looking forward to showing fans the first clip during the Streamy Awards on February 17."

"Mortal Kombat: Legacy 2" features stars from television and film - many of whom have real-world martial arts experience. The cast includes Harry Shum, Jr. ("Glee") as the warlord adviser "Kuai Liang," Casper Van Dien ("Starship Troopers") as martial arts film actor "Johnny Cage," Brian Tee ("The Wolverine") as Shaolin Monk "Liu Kang," Mark Dacascos ("Cradle 2 the Grave ") as "Kung Lao" - a close friend of "Liu Kang," Ian Anthony Dale (“Hawaii Five-O”) returns as the resurrected ninja “Scorpion,” and reprising his role he made famous in the "Mortal Kombat" theatrical release - Cary Tagawa as the powerful, arrogant sorcerer "Shang Tsung."

“Machinima and our audience have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this series, and I’m thrilled to announce that Mortal Kombat: Legacy 2 will return to its original home on Machinima,” said Allen DeBevoise, Chairman, Co-Founder, and CEO of Machinima. “We have become a destination for episodic narrative series thanks in part to the first season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy, and we look forward to breaking new ground with this much anticipated new season.”

“Mortal Kombat: Legacy 2" comes from producer Lance Sloane ("H+: The Digital Series" / "Act of Valor") and Kevin Tancharoen (“Mortal Kombat: Legacy”) who also serves as the series’ director. Production services are provided by Bandito Brothers, and Hayden Roush and Marina Stabile serve as Line Producers. The series is written by Josh Baizer, Marshall Johnson and Kevin Tancharoen. “Mortal Kombat: Legacy 2" is produced by Warner Bros. Digital Distribution and distributed by Machinima, Inc.

Mortal Kombat was first released on October 8, 1992. Since then it has become known as one of the darkest fighting games on the market. Famed for its mortal competition, fatalities and dark sense of humor, the game has been released on all major consoles, as well as arcade machines. The original development team, now known as NetherRealm Studios, led by creative director Ed Boon, continues to develop the game and build upon the existing success and rich story it has created to date.

Guillermo del Toro to Climb a Crimson Peak with Legendary; Mountains of Madness Still a Possibility

$

Guillermo del Toro to Climb a Crimson Peak with LegendaryWe are completely convinced that somewhere in this world there is a factory that does nothing but build Guillermo del Toros. It's the only way the man can handle such a herculean work load. Another project has been added to his already overflowing slate.

Deadline reports that del Toro has committed to make the ghost story Crimson Peak the next film he will direct. Even though del Toro set up that project originally from a script he wrote with frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins, he will make the film for Legendary Pictures, which backed his latest film, Pacific Rim. Legendary will produce with the expectation it will release through its deal with Warner Bros. Legendary will be a participating financing partner, with Universal retaining an option to come in as co-financier at a later date.

Del Toro will work through a rewrite with Lucinda Coxon, and they will shoot for an early 2014 production start. That gives del Toro the time to complete press for Pacific Rim and to film the FX pilot for "The Strain," the series based on the vampire novel series del Toro wrote with Chuck Hogan.

Del Toro tells the site that Crimson Peak is best described as “a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love and at the same time subvert the old rules.

The main thing: Legendary will give him the resources he needs to honor what he calls the “grand dames” of the haunted house genre. “To me that is Robert Wise’s The Haunting, which was a big movie, beautifully directed, with the house built magnificently. And the other grand daddy is Jack Clayton’s The Innocents. I’ve always tried to make big-sized horror movies like the ones I grew up watching,” del Toro said. “Films like The Omen, The Exorcist and The Shining, the latter of which is another Mount Everest of the haunted house movie. I loved the way that Kubrick had such control over the big sets he used and how much big production value there was. I think people are getting used to horror subjects done as found footage or B-value budgets. I wanted this to feel like a throwback.

As for the long talked about adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness...

They [Legendary] love [it], but we just finished Pacific Rim. They want to let that film happen, and then my hope is down the line we can do it.

More on these soon.

A Werewolf Boy Takes a Bite out of South Korean Box Office; Eclipses Twilight Release

The Twilight Saga has lost a lot of its luster in South Korea as a beast of a different kind is tearing up the box office. According to THR, despite the arrival of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, South Koreans are hot for a teenage werewolf romp of their own.

A Werewolf Boy has become the most-watched homegrown romance of all time with over 6.5 million admissions as of Monday, and the craze has prompted the release of a new version with an alternate ending.

Jo Sung-hee’s fantasy film, which revolves around a romance between a young girl (Park Bo-young) and a feral yet devoted “wolf boy” (Song Joong-ki), topped the Korean box office for four consecutive weeks from Oct. 31 to Nov. 28, keeping the Hollywood vampire saga – which has been seen by 2.39 million by now – at number two for two straight weeks after its release in the country on Nov. 15.

Werewolf is a different kind of fantasy compared to the Twilight or Harry Potter films,” said Jo, whose short film Don’t Step Out of the House won a prize at Cannes in 2008. “Werewolf does not showcase spectacular, CG-heavy action scenes; rather, it’s a fantasy of the emotions. It is a fantasy because it shows a kind of ‘love’ that many don’t believe can exist in this kind of world.”

At the behest of fans, distributor CJ Entertainment announced Friday that it will release this month in theaters an alternative ending version of Werewolf.

Meanwhile the fantasy flick, which opened Friday in the Los Angeles and Las Vegas regions, is due to hit more theaters across the U.S. and Canada on December 7th.

Just a few days after bringing the world the first clip from The Host 2, our friends over at Twitch Film have uncovered yet more delicious creature footage from the flick. Check it out and drool like the rest of us.

The Host 2's CG effects were produced domestically by Macrograph and in their 2012 showreel you'll find some good old fashioned monster mayhem. The footage hits 27 seconds in and, later, at the three-minute mark. Check it out!

"Host 2, is being prepped as a 3D project, according to the film's producer Chungeorahm Films. "Given the nature of the film and the current trends in the global film market, we think that 3D is the medium to go," said Su-yeon Kim at the company's international business division. "But this will delay the film's release date and bring significant changes to the film's logistics."

Exclusive: Composer Cris Velasco Talks ZombiU

    0

Ubisoft's horror title ZombiU has been a huge hit since its release on Nintendo Wii U. Fans were excited to see such a terrifying title be brought life to life by one of gamer's most beloved companies, and they did a superb job bringing the undead zombie chaos.

We recently set down with composer Cris Velasco to discuss ZombiU and to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at this new title.

Exclusive: Composer Cris Velasco Talks ZombiU

AMANDA DYAR:ZombiU was a surprise hit for the newly released Nintendo Wii U after it was announced by developer and publisher Ubisoft back at E3 2012. How will your soundtrack for the unique title help create an atmosphere that will keep Wii U owners hooked to ZombiU?

CRIS VELASCO:My score had one main purpose: to scare you. I used a combination of percussion, electric guitars, processed human screams, detuned carnival organs, music boxes, and a string quintet I call “The Apocalypse Ensemble”. Every instrument that was recorded was misused and tortured to create a truly unsettling soundtrack.

AMANDA:ZombiU is one of the many great new launch titles for the Nintendo Wii U. How was creating a soundtrack for a new franchise on a brand new platform different from the other projects you've worked on?

CRIS:It wasn't much different than any other title really. I always strive to do my best to write music that will complement and enhance the gameplay no matter what the project is. ZombiU was special for me though because I've been itching to get back into horror again. Horror games give you the opportunity to use a much wider, and perhaps more interesting, palette than other genres. Ubisoft wanted a very aggressive and violent score as well. It's definitely different than anything I've done before and I had a lot of fun writing it.

AMANDA: The official ZombiU soundtrack features nearly an hour of original compositions. Do you have a particular track on the album that is your favorite, and did you draw inspiration from any other works while working on the game's score?

CRIS: Ubisoft had a very clear and specific idea of how the music should sound when I started writing, so I took most of my cues from them. Also, the images from the game they were sending me were very graphic and horrifying and offered plenty of inspiration all on their own!

One of my favorite tracks from the album is “King Boris”. It's very different from anything else on the entire score and I really enjoyed writing it too. There's something so nightmarish about carnival music. To get that demented organ sound, I actually used two different calliopes - a steam-driven organ (originally played through train whistles) and slightly detuned one of them, then played them in unison. It makes for a pretty disturbing effect!

AMANDA: You've recently completed work for other big name games such as Borderlands 2 and Mass Effect 3 and older horror titles such as Clive Barker's Jericho and Hellgate: London. Where does the experience of working on ZombiU rank among your other projects, and what do you enjoy most about working in the gaming industry?

CRIS:Writing the score for ZombiU was definitely a different experience than some of those other titles you mentioned. A lot of the time I feel like I'm scoring the story arc of the protagonist. In Mass Effect 3, for example, the music was a reflection of Shepard's journey to save Earth. Even when things looked grim or impossible even, the music still showed the determination of the people that were heroically battling the Reapers. In ZombiU, there is no real protagonist. The first time I played the game, my character lasted about 5 minutes before a zombie ate my brain. Part of the game mechanic is that you will never be that same character again once you've become infected. It didn't really make sense to score the game through the eyes of anyone. So this score was pure atmosphere. As I mentioned before, its purpose is to scare you, and that's definitely something different from my other experiences in writing music for games.

For me, writing music for games couldn't make me happier. I truly love what I do. It's very gratifying for me to go from something unabashedly epic and orchestral in God of War, to working with Sascha Dikiciyan on a dramatic, ‘80s influenced sci-fi score for Mass Effect, and then jumping into something so brutal and visceral like ZombiU. It keeps me on my toes and makes the creative part of my brain very happy. At least until it’s eaten by zombies!

You can visit the official ZombiU website to learn more about the game.

Writer/Director Matt Farnsworth Talks The Orphan Killer Past, Present and Future…And How You Can See it for Free!

    $
    0
    0

The Orphan Killer is the brainchild of writer/director Matt Farnsworth. The film is unique in that it's generated an international buzz of interest without ever having had an official release.

Currently marketing the film himself online, Farnsworth has huge plans for The Orphan Killer (review here) and its superstar slasher, Marcus Miller.

"The Orphan Killer is a psychotic horror movie," Farnsworth said. "It's hard to pinpoint exactly what you're going to create when you begin making a film. You've got an idea going in but it never turns out like the exact initial concept. The inspiration for TOK was partly my first film, Iowa…I really liked the practical F/X on Iowa. There was a throat slash, finger cut off, and other practical F/X used. I thought it was amazing when I saw it on film and the blood reminded me of the slashers I saw as a kid in the 80's. The Halloweens, Friday the 13th and those kinds of flicks."

Farnsworth talks about exactly where The Orphan Killer idea came from. "I was in negotiations with the owners of Magnolia Pictures, the Cuban brothers, to buy IOWA and they said 'You should make a horror film.' I said 'You know what, I'm going to write one.' It seemed to me that looking back, all the films I did, acting or otherwise, were all horror," Farnsworth said. "Then just after a screening of Iowa, a fan comes up to me and says 'Here, take this.' I opened his package and it was a silver face, a metal silver, flat face nailed to a black board. It was pretty industrial looking and thick. I named it Silver Face. It took a year percolating in my mind when a lightning bolt struck. I was on a trip to New Jersey at my mother-in-law's house and I must have written for a week straight. And a lot of ideas just came flowing out for the movie."

Upon watching The Orphan Killer, viewers will notice the aggressive way Farnsworth deals with the Catholic Church. "That’s not really the first thing that sticks out when you watch it," Farnsworth said. "Most people reference the fact that as an indie film it’s extremely well made. The religious aspects are actually one of the last things most bring up. Religion is a mental disease people suffer from, no doubt, but I wasn't like I'm going to attack the church," Farnsworth said. "It's about the characters and I find the religion in it to be merely a backdrop a lot of people can relate to. Marcus himself talks about Jesus and believing in Jesus. I knew sawing the priest's arm off and eating it, and the dialogue about no more touching boys, would generate buzz. And if I'm not putting some kind of message out there, then what would be the point of making a movie? So there's a statement of my own and that takes it to another level in terms of slasher and where that genre has ventured before. It's evoked a lot of reactions from around the world, but most love it for the gore and sexy Diane Foster."

And one of the more remarkable reactions The Orphan Killer has evoked from around the world is the fact that the film has been banned in Germany. "Germany said the glorification of violence was the reason for the ban," Farnsworth said. "I've only released the film to Facebook fans in a test situation. It wasn't even really intended to be a release. It was a test to see if anyone gives a shit about this movie. The Facebook fans showed a real strong interest. When I did that limited test release, it became so viral the German film board sent a letter to my door saying 'Hey, you are not allowed to sell your movie here.' It was like a five-page thing. So ridiculous, it's amazing. But obviously, the film had a huge impact and that’s impressive considering its limited marketing and release."

However, fans in Germany can breathe easy; Farnsworth has no intention of keeping Marcus Miller from you. "I know horror fans are notorious for fighting for freedom of expression," Farnsworth said. "They care deeply about the genre they follow and care deeply about the people within the genre. It's a tight community and that's the way we roll and we were just like 'Fuck it, they banned it.' We're still gonna sell it there, so fuck you. We send it there discreetly all the time and Germany just loves TOK."

With The Orphan Killer being a slasher film, the true power of the movie is drawn from the killer, and Marcus Miller is a familiar character while being something totally new. "I think he's similar so that makes him recognizable to the viewer," Farnsworth said. "Similar only in what he’d like to do to people. Yes, it’s a throwback slasher but nothing more than that. He’s got his own story to tell and many more movies to do it. Fans have said it's their all-time favorite film. It has become commonplace to hear it. I appreciate it every time. Marcus is a sympathetic character regardless of his heinous acts."

It is that sympathy the audience feels for Marcus which Farnsworth credits with making the killer an intriguing character. "You get to feel for Marcus being abused in the orphanage," Farnsworth said. "I've had women at the end of the movie say 'I feel so bad for Marcus.' They're on Team Marcus. Then you have Team Audrey for fans who are all for Diane Foster’s character, Audrey."

And Farnsworth sees Marcus Miller as more than just a new, evolved killer and more than a sympathetic character. "Marcus is kind of a funny character in moments. There are moments in the film when you just laugh at his brutality," Farnsworth said. "The scene when he hits Audrey in the head with a wrench to wake her up…that's hysterical. He literally just lug-wrenches her in the temple to wake her up and for some reason that makes me laugh. I think people who watch the film more than once get that those brutal F/X are meant to be a little bit humorous."

Farnsworth talked about the F/X in the film. "There's beauty in the killing," Farnsworth said. "There's something beautiful in the F/X that David Presto and Josh Turi put out there. I think those F/X have a lasting impact on slasher fans because there is no CGI, they're all practically done. Fans of the slasher genre really appreciate that kind of effort. Especially when it is gore-filled like TOK".

So the big question on everyone's mind is: What is the future for The Orphan Killer?

"It’s a digital age and many studios are like dinosaurs. The Internet has allowed us to speak to slasher fans, and the ones who have been enlightened enough to pick up a copy of the film love it," Farnsworth said. "Hollywood offered to put the film out but I prefer to keep my relationship in horror between myself and the fans at this time. I am not ruling out working with a studio in the future. It needs to be the right relationship. In fact, as a way to show my appreciation to horror fans, I have decided to take a major Murder Initiative. Over the last year TOK has become the most downloaded film in horror. We have had over 2.5 million illegal downloads. That speaks very highly to its popularity. I often ask people 'Would the film look different on iTunes if it had Lionsgate’s name on it? Does the trailer look any different with a studio logo on it?' The answer is 'Hell no!' It’s the same thing. I am trying to show that the world has evolved. I have no desire for a theatrical release. I don’t see a need in it. The world lives online and will more and more. My sites are on that marketplace. Not the museum. I recognize that TOK is not your average indie film. It’s a bigger budget than most and that does help separate it from the pack."

Farnsworth continued, "My Murder Initiative is simple. I am making the film free for all to watch. I am proud of all this film has accomplished. I love the fans, The Orphan Family, that keeps this cruel TOK revolution alive," Farnsworth said. "It is my goal to allow everyone in the world to see my film at the highest possible quality available online. I am not doing this because I have to. I want people to understand that. I am doing this because I can. I want fans to see the film the way that myself and producer/star Diane Foster wanted them to see it. Unrated and uncut. I don't blame the people who pirated the movie for any wrong doing, as a matter of fact, I am happy they want to see my film that badly. Brutality this good should never be missed. Now I want them to see the best quality possible. The only problem with the pirated copies is they do not rip the film properly. The sound is odd. The picture is not full HD. What we are releasing here is pure HD with exquisite sound. After people watch the film they have the opportunity to go and buy the film on Blu-ray or DVD and add it to their collection. Everyone on the planet should have access to The Orphan Killer and we intend on making that happen with this official online release."

Watch The Orphan Killer in full HD online for free here!

Long being a creative marketer, Farnsworth explains that traditional promotional methods won't always work anymore. "Studios have stopped paying for films so you have to be creative on your own. You have to think outside the box and use what's given to you…social media, different avenues to connect with people that weren't available five or six years ago. We just come up with ways to touch base with fans and make them feel good about checking out the product and enjoying it."

Asked what he wants horror fans who haven't seen The Orphan Killer to know, Farnsworth said, "The Orphan Killer is an award-winning, critically-acclaimed slasher film that took the horror world literally by storm, especially on the Internet. There's been a lot of passion put into this project and it reads. If you're a slasher fan, you're gonna love it. We care about it and we want to continue to build this franchise."

But just because it's being marketed differently, don't think that The Orphan Killer cut the corners at all during production. "It's a million dollar film," Farnsworth said. "It's not some cheapo kinda movie and not something that was shot in your mom's garage with some ketchup. This is a real professional film. I was taught to edit by Robert Brown, who edited The Amityville Horror, Lethal Weapon, Police Academy and The Lost Boys. We went in together to do Iowa. I taught him technology and he taught me editing. So I learned from a master."

Just within the last couple weeks some cool things have been happening for The Orphan Killer. Not only was the first Marcus Miller figurine released, but Farnsworth got word that scenes from The Orphan Killer were being displayed as background imagery during the current Rob Zombie/Marilyn Manson Twins of Evil Tour.

"The future of The Orphan Killer is very brutally bright," Farnsworth said. "I have just inked a deal with the mighty Trick or Treat Studios to distribute the official Orphan Killer mask into retail stores worldwide. Chris Zephro, Justin Mabry, and I hit it off famously. Justin created the mold for the Michael Myers blood tears mask that Trick or Treat puts out. He has just sent me over some shots of the mold he is making for The Orphan Killer and it is truly amazing. Fans are going to freak out over this mask. Last but not least, I am working on a new TOK web series that will pick up where the film left off. I can’t talk much about it right now but it is going to be big. So stay tuned to our murderous news."

And the final word from Farnsworth about his project, his baby, his love, The Orphan Killer? "It's a bloody revolution," Farnsworth said. "A revolution that people join every day and enjoy being a part of it because they're watching something grow and I think that's fun. We've got 182,000 fans on Facebook and rising. Come join us and watch the movie".

The Walking Dead: Q&A with Andrew Lincoln (Rick) and a Sneak Peek of Episode 309 - The Suicide King

In what's probably the final Q&A for "The Walking Dead" of the year, Andrew Lincoln (aka Rick Grimes) talks about turning into a real-life Southerner and describes what it's like to rip his guts out on set.

In addition, we have a teaser photo and a few sneak peeks of what lies ahead when the series returns from its winter hiatus in February, 2013 with Episode 3.09, "The Suicide King." But first let's hear from Lincoln:

Q: Now that The Walking Dead is in its third season, what aspects of the show still surprise you?

A: The show just surprises me and brutalizes me. I was just taking to Scott Wilson (Hershel), and we were just riffing on how extraordinary this show is. The only downer is the fact that we lose people. You make these incredibly brilliant and intense relationships with truly gifted actors, and invariably they get bitten, and I have to kill them. And it is kind of the big downer on what is becoming the single greatest job of my career. In the space of three years I've done more gymnastics on this show than I have in probably four or five years. It's been an incredible journey, and I wouldn't change it for the world, although it would have been nice to have a couple of more seasons with Sarah [Wayne Callies] (Lori).

Q: Are you starting to feel like your character -- a leader among the company of actors?

A: I don't know. I just try and do my job. If people look to me, that's great. But acting is not like Enron; it's not a corporate exercise. People have their own ways of working, and I'm very much of the opinion that you create a space that people can feel relaxed and comfortable and able to work in. I don't feel that fear is a good incentive on a film set. It's not the way I respond to work so, if anything, I just try and make people feel at ease and happy and wanting to come to work and do their best. And as a leader, I try and create an environment where people can risk and dare to look stupid. Then again, if I'm on set with Scott Wilson, who's worked for fifty years, I bow at the [feet] of that. I call him Lionheart; the guy is a god!

Q: After Lori dies, Rick goes through a total mental breakdown. What's it like to lose your mind?

A: If they kill my wife, you know what I mean, it's the real deal for me. She deserved everything. I came into the writers' room and said, "What do you think Rick's breaking point is?" And this is what they came up with. I wanted to drop the gun, I wanted to fall, all of these things, and I wanted you to see this man, who has led these people and been so strong, fall to the ground broken. I had an acting teacher who always said that even when you're ripping your guts out with emotion, it should be catharsis. Not many people get to do that in their lives full-stop.

The Walking Dead: Q&A with Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes)

Q: In Episode 8, Rick finally gets to see Woodbury. What was your take on the town?

A: I hate Woodbury! I actively feel nauseous when I go there. I hate everybody in it, I just can't stand to look at the place. I love the prison; it's beautiful.

Q: You've spent nearly three years in Georgia filming the show. Are you starting to feel like a bit of a Southerner now?

A: I think I'm a Southern British now. This is the one time that I talk in British. My family has gone home now -- honestly, man, it won't be long it before I'm completely integrated. I totally love this part of the world. Almost three quarters of my year is spent in America now. I love this country, and I'm very excited to be here now. You know, even in spite of the brutal summer and ridiculous weather we get, this part of the world here around Georgia is really beautiful.

Q: How does that Southern influence permeate the set?

A: People are really cool here. They feel it's our homegrown show. When people come down to work here, we really go off into this bubble. It's not about the business side of things down here. We just get down and get sweaty and dirty and get on with it.

Writer and Director Talk Reel Evil Release; Exclusive Stills

With the Full Moon feature Reel Evil releasing tomorrow, December 4th, on DVD and VOD, we caught up with director Danny Draven and writer Shane Bitterling to chat about their found footage film, which is an interesting detour from the fare producer Charles Band has become known for.

Written by Bitterling, Reel Evil follows (according to the film’s synopsis) “struggling filmmakers Kennedy, Cory and James, who finally catch the break they are looking for when they are hired to shoot a behind-the-scenes documentary for a major studio production. But their dream job quickly turns into a nightmare when they explore the legendary haunted location and find something far worse than anything Hollywood could create. Terror becomes reality for the filmmakers as they uncover the malevolent secrets of the hospital and the sinister doctor who once ran it.” Rounding out the cast are Jessica Morris, Kaiwi Lyman, Jim Tavaré, Kyle Morris and Jamie Bernadette, among others.

“Somewhere in the middle of writing Puppet Master X: Axis Rising, Charles (Band) told me that Full Moon was going to do their first found footage movie,” Bitterling said of how he became attached to pen Reel Evil. “ I was immediately excited about it because it was something different for the company and for myself. I assumed that it was going to be another ‘puppet movie’, which could be interesting, but I didn't know how it would work. But that wasn't the case at all.”

Chatting regarding the development process of Reel Evil, Bitterling related that he soon learned that it would be a complete departure for Full Moon.

“It’s a total ‘180’ from anything they have ever done,” offered the writer. “There are no puppets. No dwarves. No evil bongs. This is straight-up horror. Danny (Draven), who was already set as the director, and I spoke on the phone after Band told us to get cracking on it. Neither of us knew what Reel Evil was going to be, but Danny had heard that Linda Vista Hospital was probably going to be used. That opened everything up. Basically, we had free reign over what the movie was, as long as we came in on budget. Actually, our budget was bigger than most other found footage movies. We discussed what we thought was scary and a general tone. We also wanted to make sure that our characters are always doing something. With these movies the audience expects a large amount of characters doing little but talking, and we didn't want that. The movie had to keep pushing along without long breaks in action or scares. Within an hour we had a fuzzy overview of who the characters were and a solid placement of where they were going to be.”

“Shane and I spent a lot of time on the script,” added director Draven, who previously has edited dozens of titles for Full Moon, of the process of conceptualizing Reel Evil. “We had a lot of freedom, and that allowed us to lock in a solid blueprint of the film. I say 'blueprint' because that was what the script was for me, a guidebook, not a definite shooting script. We did a lot of improvisation on the film - something we needed to do to keep it real. The film was not easy to shoot from a technical standpoint. Hiding the lights, the crew, and the director was always an obstacle to overcome. In films like Quarantine they simply build a mega-set and light it all from above, and we did not have that luxury.”

“We knew we weren't reinventing the wheel,” continued the writer. “That wasn't a concern, really. Our goal was making it scary and having characters that are likable. I'm a big fan of less is more, creepy scares so I designed a quick treatment for Danny to look over. We both agreed it needed more nudity and gore, which you usually don't see in found footage movies. Once we were satisfied with the skeleton of it all, I began the script. Since it deals with a film crew shooting a ‘making of’ for another movie, I sprinkled it with characters based on people that I've dealt with over the past fifteen years of working in film, like the ‘jerk producer’, the ‘kleptomaniac starlet’, the ‘douche director’. They all make an appearance. I had fun writing those scenes, but we never wanted to lose sight of the dread and of the horror elements.”

Given the production value the location of Linda Vista brings to any production, as well as the ‘creep’ value, we asked Bitterling how much the former hospital influenced the narrative of Reel Evil during the scripting process.

“It was a vitally important factor when writing,” he offered of the grounds, which reside just outside of downtown LA. “I hadn't been there for almost ten years so I wrote the initial draft from memory, which, as it turns out, is entirely suspect. We did a location scout of the place and decided which scenes were going to happen in which parts of the hospital. We found locations that didn't correspond to anything in the script, but we wanted to use them, such as the boiler room. I hate when people say things like this, but Linda Vista is as important a character in the film as any of our actors. It doesn't need set dressing. It doesn't need a ton of fake history. It is scary as hell in there. During our location scout I screamed like a little girl when I found what I thought was a body with its head bashed in. Danny shined a light on it and found that I just screamed at a sandbag and red ice skate. That's the type of tricks Linda Vista plays on you.”

“The rat in the broom closet was real, however,” Bitterling continued. “To not organically use what the hospital had to offer would have been stupid so I wrote or re-wrote entire scenes or chunks of the script to utilize the location. Even while shooting, the script was fluid. Actors reacted to locations. Shots were changed to accommodate the place. The original script is on the DVD so interested people can see what changes were made. A big one is a scene that takes place in a restroom. It was very clearly devised and promised to be one of the biggest scares. When the crew got to the restroom to film the scene, it was too hazardously disgusting in there for anybody with a nose. So bad, in fact, that we moved all the way to the other side of the hospital in order to re-work the scene, and it ended up being far better and scarier than originally written. Make-up FX wizard Dave Corsile and I even shot B-roll with and without actors of asbestos-ridden, dilapidated areas that the production hadn't seen before and which we couldn't move into, due to size or time. Very cool that Danny incorporated that into the final film because it would have been a shame to not capture those hideous places for a movie like this.”

“I've been a part of the Full Moon family for over ten years,” offered Draven of his prolific work with the company, “and I know the fan base very well. Reel Evil is unique because it simply doesn't fit into the Full Moon mold of films. No mini-monsters, no clowns, eyeballs, possessed cookies, or other crazy concepts that we love about the Full Moon brand. It's Full Moon's first found footage-style film, and it is a straight-up horror film. My approach was back-to basics horror, something I learned from producing and directing a film for Stuart Gordon. There was only one rule for me and the actors on this film, which was to ‘Keep it real.’”

Of the DVD, “It’s one of the most loaded DVDs from Full Moon in a long time,” said Draven, who will be on hand with Bitterling and Reel Evil cast and crew on December 8th at 2pm at Dark Delicacies in Burbank, CA, to sign copies of the release. “It's chock-full of extra features for the fans.”

As for whether Reel Evil is intended to launch a new franchise for Full Moon, “It wasn't intended to, but I hope it does!” Draven concluded. “I'm sure that Shane and I could make at least ten sequels, and if the fans want more, we can surely go out and make REEL EVIL 2! And go even more extreme!”

    Terminator Rights Deal Finally Settled

The road to getting another Terminator movie made has gotten as complicated as traversing Skynet's main frame. The main culprit behind the various hardships has been a rights dispute that has thankfully drawn to a close.

Deadline reports that nearly 18 months after Megan Ellison pledged over $20 million for the rights to finish The Terminator‘s humanity vs the Skynet cyborgs storyline with a new series of films, she has finally closed the complicated rights deal with Pacificorp. Other than the fact no progress has been made all this time on a script, the surprise here is Ellison has enlisted her brother, David Ellison, to be her financial and creative partner. There is still no studio attached, but future Terminator films will be done as a co-production between her Annapurna Pictures and his Skydance Productions. The Ellisons will produce, while Dana Goldberg, Paul Schwake and Ted Schipper will be exec producers.

Good news indeed! Now can we finally do something to wash away the stench of McG's Terminator: Salvation?
