When Will We See Michonne on AMC's The Walking Dead?Even though we haven't the slightest idea as to how to correctly pronounce her name, we've been waiting ever so impatiently for one of the most beloved characters from The Walking Dead comic book, Michonne, to show up on the hit AMC series.

According to producer Gale Anne Hurd who was recently interviewed by The Watercooler -

"We are following the character development of the women in the comic book. Andrea is already undergoing a change in her character from a civil rights attorney lacking survival skills already found in some of the men (like the deputies Rick and Shane, or the survivalist Daryl) into someone who can take care of herself. Maggie Greene is a farmer’s daughter who can ride horses better than any of the men, and takes out a walker the first time we see her in the series. And one of the most kick ass characters from the comic book is Michonne, a samurai sword wielding woman, who will be introduced in future seasons."

Stay tuned, kids! We're sure she and Tyrese are on their way! "The Walking Dead Season 2" resumes in just a couple of weeks.

To stay up-to-the-minute on all things walker related, follow @WalkingDead_AMC on Twitter and visit "The Walking Dead" on Facebook. For more be sure to hit up the official "The Walking Dead" page on AMC.com.

Two new horror releases are coming our way on the shortest month of the year and as always we have got the skinny for you on the particulars. Read on, oh great one!

February 14th, 2012
On the Eve of D-Day, two Allied commandos sent to destroy a German gun installation, uncover a secret occult lair where the Nazis are hiding a deadly she-demon, whom they plan to use to turn the tide of the war. THE DEVIL’S ROCK marks the directorial debut of Special Effects Master Paul Campion (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, X-Men: the Last Stand), who crafts a bloody battle from hell in this Nazi-era fright fest. Featuring special effects and make-up by the 5-time Academy Award® winning WETA Workshop (Avatar, District 9, Lord of the Rings, King Kong), this WWII frightfest has been called “the best Kiwi horror [film] since Peter Jackson’s Brain Dead [1]”

The Devil's Rock , June 5, 1944. A crack commando team, Captain Ben Grogan (Craig Hall, King Kong, 30 Days of Night) and Sergeant Joseph Tane (Karlos Drinkwater, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”) are sent on a top secret mission to destroy gun emplacements inside German occupied territory in the Channel Islands. Diverted off their landing point by strong currents, they eventually find themselves near the entrance of an ominous German bunker. After placing explosives on the gun turret, they surprise and kill a fleeing German soldier pleading for help. And when the screams of a woman follow from inside, Grogan makes the decision to go on an unauthorized rescue mission. Once inside, however, the Captain encounters much more than he bargained for: a scene of unworldly carnage, where only a mysterious Nazi officer and beautiful but Devilish captive remain alive and the battle between good and true evil is about to begin.

13:30 CORMAN’S WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL (Scottish Premiere)
Roger Corman was the true godfather of independent filmmaking, and this multi-era defining documentary tracks the triumphant rise of the legendary writer, director, producer, and distributor, widely known for his high camp, low budget, rapid fire exploitation movies of the 1950s and 60s. Corman is also a well-respected maverick, rabble-rouser, and producer. He created his own production and distribution company and discovered the next generation of film greats, including Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Joe Dante, James Cameron, and even Ron Howard. From Corman’s first 1955 feature THE MONSTER FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR through the Edgar Allan Poe/Vincent Price horrors and Hell’s Angels flicks to his latest production DINOSHARK, all the blood and guts of his lurid and fascinating brilliance on a budget career are here illustrated by great clips and with insights from his contemporaries, students, stars - and a Jack Nicholson like you’ve never seen him before.

Claustrophobic heat and brooding tension seep from the screen in this character-driven hi-tone chiller set in an unknown rural town. Seedy bar owner Slim Walding hires a mysterious Croatian hitman to murder a local garage owner over a shady business deal gone bad. The crime is indeed carried out by the stone-faced stranger, but a planned double-crossing backfires when an innocent waitress (Georgina Haig) becomes involved. Much of what makes this study in slow-burning terror so nail-bitingly effective is the silence that director China employs for long periods, coupled with the deep, shadowy corners of the picture frame – and minds of the captivating lead characters.

Two years later allied Finnish and American forces are on a mission to seize an underground enemy bunker on the Soviet border, but they must face attack by a far deadlier force - the flesh-hungry victims of those SS experiments. Thankfully this barrage of bullets, bombs, and brains is refreshingly free of the irony and winking that has become all too common in the modern zombie flick. With a stirring soundtrack by Joel Goldsmith (son of Jerry), WAR OF THE DEAD solely concentrates on delivering wave after wave of highly satisfying, action-packed, war punk cool living dead mayhem.

Being huge fans of zombie films, I cannot remember the last time we were so excited for a home video release as we are for The Dead. Need another example as to why? Check out this latest trailer!

From the Press Release
Unlike anything audiences have been exposed to before, The Dead grabs you by the throat and takes you on a visceral journey across the harsh but stunning landscapes of Africa, where the sole survivor of the doomed final evacuation flight out of the continent has more than just the unforgiving terrain to deal with. Written and directed by Howard J. Ford and Jon Ford, The Dead has stunned audiences at such prestigious film festivals as Fantastic Fest, FrightFest and the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival. Garnering hundreds of rave reviews during its theatrical release, The Dead truly has become an instant cult classic.

The first horror film entirely filmed in Africa, The Dead takes the zombie legend back to its original roots and has justly been hailed as “superbly crafted...it’s a knockout” by the Village Voice, “one of the finest zombie films I’ve ever seen” by the Horror Channel, with Bloody-Disgusting declaring it “one of the most buzzed-about films of the year.” Anchor Bay Entertainment proudly announces the February 14th, 2012, Blu-ray™ and DVD release of The Dead, the critically acclaimed horror film that wowed both audiences and critics worldwide. SRP is $26.98 for the DVD, and $29.99 for the Blu-ray™.

When the last flight out of war-torn Africa crashes off the coast, Lt. Brian Murphy (Rob Freeman) is the sole survivor in a land where the dead are returning to life and attacking the living. On the run in a hostile and inhospitable parched landscape, Murphy has to use his wits and ingenuity if he is to get home alive to his family. When he crosses paths with local solider Daniel Dembele (Prince David Osei), a man frantically searching for his son, they join forces. Two desperate men from two very different cultures fight side-by-side to survive across the incredible vistas of Africa as the world around them succumbs to the deadliest of viruses.

Bonus features on The Dead Blu-ray™ and DVD will include audio commentary by writer/producer/director Howard J. Ford and writer/director of photography/co-director Jon Ford, “Unearthing The Dead: Behind the Scenes” featurette, and a deleted scene.

Exclusive Set Report and Image Gallery from Buddy Giovinazzo's Ginger

$

0

The first thought that came to mind upon arriving to director Buddy Giovinazzo’s then-shooting supernatural horror flick Ginger on Sunday, December 18 of 2011 was, “This looks like some place Charles Manson would have frequented back in the Sixties.” As I was to find, I was correct in that assumption, and as it turned out, Giovinazzo himself, too, was working hard to add yet another creepy chapter to the location’s storied past alongside Ginger stars Marc Senter and Elissa Dowling.

Arriving to set, the sprawling property along Big Tujunga Road for the most part was scattered haphazardly with ramshackle buildings roofed in sheet-metal, a rather stagnant pool, and abandoned machinery and horse stables, although as the wind whispered through the mature eucalyptus trees, so did an almost tangible feeling of rock 'n roll history. Those who’ve ever spent any time in the homes which dot Laurel Canyon know the feeling, and the same outlaw creative vibe of the 60’s and 70’s which manifests in that hilly Hollywood enclave seemed to linger also at the Tjunga location selected for Ginger.

Marc Senter, Exclusive Set Report and Image Gallery from Buddy Giovinazzo's GingerWith the production shooting day ten of twelve, I took a stroll with Ginger co-star Marc Senter, who led me into the main house in which they were filming, it’s eclectic interior adorned with myriad taxidermies, funky furniture, and rock 'n roll artifacts (little of it courtesy of the production’s art department, as the décor was for the most part entirely organic).

The owner of the property told us that Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young recorded one of their albums here,” said Senter, whose dramatically intense turns in the films Red, White & Blue and The Lost have been critically impacting and who in Ginger plays a music blogger named ‘Mark Lighthouse’ who heads into the mountains to interview an up-and-coming singer (Dowling).

They apparently used to jam out in the dirt yard here and just hang out all night long,” he continued, “and I guess Stevie Nicks also used to jam here. The owners also have this amazing recording studio in the back of property. You walk in, and it’s like leopard print walls and fucking guitars and a sound booth, and that’s kind of the cool thing about the place in that it does have a music history.

It also apparently has a history of mass murder (or at least the presence of those who’d commit it), as the location manager chimed in that the Manson Family, too, had spent time within the structure’s walls during its 1960’s heyday as a hippie retreat. This plays to the narrative of Ginger for, as scripted, the previous owners of the house Senter’s character visits were mass murderers, and the abode is now in narrative subsequently haunted by their malevolent spirits.

Other interesting tidbits of information thrown my way as Senter and I posed for a rather Rockwellian photo with a stuffed mount included the following: The property owner has a penchant for patrolling the grounds at night with a loaded 12-gauge while wearing NVGs, which meant the crew had little worry of having their equipment stolen. The property owner also favors classical music at high volume in his recording studio while reclining naked on a velvet couch in a cowboy hat while covered by a pack of hound dogs. Bathing in the swampy waters of the neglected pool is also a potential past-time, as the crew had witnessed the evening previous when the owner, late for a show at The Key Club in West Hollywood and experiencing plumbing issues, jumped into the brackish soup for a quick bath before speeding off in his Porsche.

Unfortunately, during our visit such interesting behavior wasn’t on display, nor was there much scripted Ginger carnage as Giovinazzo was busy shooting vehicle interiors with his principal cast. This did allow Senter and me some time to chat about what drew him to the project however.

Buddy’s early film No Way Home, which I think came out in 1996 and stars Tim Roth, was fucking amazing,” mused Senter, who won ‘Best Actor’ at Screamfest 2006 for his role of ‘Ray Pye’ in Chris Sivertson’s gritty thriller The Lost. “It reminded me of films like The Indian Runner or The Crossing Guard, just straight drama with really clean, simple camera and not a lot of intrusive stuff, and I watched Buddy’s feature Life is Hot in Cracktown and saw some pieces of that that I really liked, too, so when I heard about this project, I was interested to read it.

Querying Senter on his thoughts regarding his second foray into a genre that is universally considered as ‘horror’ (following Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever), he replied, “You’re right. Red, White & Blue wasn’t straight horror, it was more psychological, and I think The Lost was like that, too. So with Ginger, Mitch Davis from Fantasia had emailed me and told me I should check this dude Buddy out and the script he and Greg Chandler had penned. I have tons of love for Mitch, and Deborah Kara Unger, who had worked with Buddy on No Way Home, also said he was amazing so when I originally read Ginger, I thought there was something about it. It’s much more like Rosemary’s Baby versus like arms and heads flying off and shit like that so I was more intrigued by the story and the characters and the trip that they go on. And then after seeing his work and his segment of The Theatre Bizarre, it was obvious to me that Buddy was excellent at directing drama. He has almost a European sensibility. His films are clean and told well and are captivating.

As for his character, “He’s a rock blogger whose dad was like this hardcore badass heavyweight music dude so he’s rebelling against his dad by being into more underground bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre and acts like that,” expounded the actor, whose as-of-yet unreleased turn in his produced fight-film Brawler is generating a lot of buzz. “So basically he’s a journalist and kind of a shy dude who just wants to do his work and to do it well, and then he finds this girl Ginger (played by Dowling) and falls in love with her music and takes a risk to see if he can get a meeting with her.

When he sits down to interview her, he more or less starts falling for this chick,” Senter continued, “but tries to be an utmost gentleman because he is one and he’s also shy and nerdy and he just wants to make a good impression and to get a good interview. With that being said, he’s also terrified of animals, which I think is totally hilarious. He’s a total pussy next to this chick. She’s ballsy, sexy, and tough; and he’s like kind of a little wimp, which is why I think he’s totally awesome.

Long known as a method actor, Senter stated of the nuances with which he imbued his character, “There are scenes that I play with my voice a little higher, and also, I stole a piece my outfit from the director,” he laughed, gesturing to Giovinazzo’s ensemble. “Look how I buttoned my shirt. Only two times, so I took that from him, but we both have pieces of this character in us, and it was a combination of them. Buddy’s a total artiste and very dedicated to his work and very nice, sweet, and genuine; and so the second I met him, I knew that elements of him were to an extent part of the character of ‘Mark’ and that I’d use some of that to inform my character. With all the other stuff, I was just really reminiscent of those Johnny Depp films like Sleepy Hollow, where it’s like he’s scared of everything, and that’s interesting to me, so I just kind of played it like he was very shy and nervous and sweet so that at the very end, where I turn into...

Senter ended it there, teasing the scripted third act as well as another project he’s attached to.

I’m working with Darren Lynn Bousman in kind of a ‘goth-opera’ project that he’s planned, which will be challenging ‘cause I’d have to sing,” said Senter. (Writer’s note: The producers of that project are being a bit cagey regarding casting announcements regardless that many have already hit the web courtesy of tweets from the cast so you’ll have to wait for the full skinny on Senter’s outrageous character in that project. Savvy readers and Repo! The Genetic Opera fans will, however, undoubtedly connect the dots: the project is The Devil’s Carnival, and it additionally stars Bill Moseley and Briana Evigan and, as we reported earlier this week, Alexa Vega, Skinny Puppy’s Ogre, Emilie Autumn, and Sean Patrick Flanery).

Elissa Dowling, Exclusive Set Report and Image Gallery from Buddy Giovinazzo's GingerWith Senter hailed away for a take, lead actress Elissa Dowling (who portrays the flick’s titular ‘Ginger’) chatted with me in her trailer regarding her involvement in the project, and while true I’ve known her for some time, her continued knack for self-deprecating humility coupled with her geek-girl enthusiasm (she’s a self-professed Mothra fan after all) proved as enjoyable as it has historically.

On what attracted Dowling to the role (the burgeoning scream queen’s previously appeared in dozens of indie horror films, including Giovinazzo’s The Theatre Bizarre), “Everything, but mostly it was the music,” replied the actress. “She’s a musician in the script, and because of that I get to sing, and I’ve been (personally) doing that on the side. I’m in a band called The Blues now, and we’ve been playing The Key Club pretty much every month and The Whiskey, and my heart’s in music so that was great. Plus Buddy himself is great so I was really stoked to be able to work with him. With this role I get to showcase some things I don’t normally get to.”

Case in point?

My guitar player actually came in the other night and played a song (in the film) because I can’t play guitar,” offered Dowling, “and I kind of finished it on camera so hopefully it looks real! I mean, I know how to hold a guitar because I took six years of lessons, but I’m not as skilled as he is.” (Writer’s note: An original musical composition written and recorded by the actress and songstress entitled "Night of Nightmares" is set to appear in Ginger, with a possibility for another).

Of the challenges inherent to the location shoot, “It’s been the long nights,” said Dowling, “and my sleeping schedule has been crazy. You get to the point where it’s hard to process things. Buddy is very specific about what he wants and wants to get it before we move on to the next thing, and I don’t want to hold anyone back so it’s about maintaining that focus even when tired.

The physicality, too, according to the actress proved happily challenging.

I’ve choked on blood a couple times and had bite marks on my thighs, but it’s been nothing major,” Dowling stated, “but we did a lot of action when Jason London (Dazed and Confused) was on set. I haven’t done action like that before so I was a little intimidated because Jason and Marc are like pros. They did the majority of it, though, and we were making zombie porn jokes about it because there was a lot of grunting and groaning going on during, and Jason was in full-on bloody makeup.

Regarding the status of writer and director Andrew Jones’ feature Manson Rising, another project in which Dowling is cast, “I hope it’s happening soon,” she said of principal photography. “I was really upset that we lost (actor) David Hess.” (Note: The Last House on the Left actor passed away on October 7, 2011, and was originally attached to the film).

He and I used to talk a lot on the phone, and we were so excited that we finally had a movie that we were going to do together,” continued Dowling of Hess, “and now he’s not going to be there. I hope it happens, though, and my character in it is really cool. She’s the only one that actually witnesses Manson doing something physically harmful to someone else because the rest of it is all manipulation, but she’s part of him in a way, and he protects her. It’s not that he manipulates her as much as the other girls because she’s sort of a dark character already.

As for Dowling’s next flick, she’ll be soon acting alongside a bevy of genre vets in Joe Hollow’s supernatural flick The Disciples (more about that here) with Laid to Rest actor Nick Principe, whom she’s also set to potentially star with in the film Dark Are the Woods, which is slated to shoot this summer in Australia.

Buddy Giovinazzo, Exclusive Set Report and Image Gallery from Buddy Giovinazzo's GingerCatching up with Ginger director Giovinazzo between takes, we sat down to discuss his approach to the feature as well as the challenges inherent in directing a low-budget film, his cinematic influences, and more.

I’ve never shot a feature film in twelve days before, and it’s insane,” riffed the entirely personable 51-year-old New Yorker, and sure enough, I’d find that he’d only buttoned two of the buttons on his collared shirt. “We are averaging between twenty and twenty-five setups a day,” Giovinazzo continued. “For an indie feature that’s not extreme. I know some guys would be shooting forty to forty-five, but what we are doing is, we are shooting less shots and more takes and I’m just really working with the actors. Anyone who knows my films knows that the acting is always really good, and I really put my time into that, and I’ve got a great cast with Marc and Elissa. Marc is really on another level, and it’s a real brotherhood working with him, too, because we seem to have the same tastes, and that makes life so much easier. He’ll come up with something and I’ll think that it’s a great idea, or I’ll come up with something and he’ll go with it so that’s been a real pleasure.

Shooting Ginger digitally on the Sony FS100, “It’s great because it’s smaller than the RED and we need to be able to move because we are shooting a lot of hand-held,” offered the director. “I’m not going for a shaky cam effect, but I want the shots to breathe and to have a certain creepiness and to not be sterile on sticks. If you can imagine a dirty version of what John Carpenter did in Halloween with that creepy drift, it’s like that except because it’s hand-held it’s more of a humanistic drift. This film is really about creepiness and atmospherics and character, but it does have its shock moments.

We asked Giovinazzo what type of cinematic viscera viewers may expect (Ginger’s special effects were provided by Marcus Koch with assist by makeup artist Margaux Lancaster), to which he replied, “The gore’s been great! We had a demon-possessed dead body (played by actor London) that jumped out of a refrigerator and attacked Marc and tried to rape Elissa, and that was a great day! Jason was really good (in that part) and really creepy. We shot him three times because of course in my films everyone has to puke blood, which is required, so we had to reset each time to clean. He was really terrific. I would have loved to have worked with him more.

Looking toward the future, “I’d just like to stay working in horror,” said Giovinazzo. “All of my work has just been on the edge of horror where they are too strong for the mainstream audience but aren’t actually horror so the true horror fans don’t like them. They’ve been basically social dramas that explode in violence. In some ways Ginger owes something to (filmmaker) Ti West because he’s a genre filmmaker who does humanistic dramas that have horror, and he works with his actors in a brilliant way. The thing is that I grew up on horror films. I saw Mark of the Devil in the theatre with a puke-bag and all of the double-features theatrically on 42nd Street when they still showed grindhouse cinema. But as I got older, I realized that the acting is really bad in a lot of those films, but then I saw guys like Carpenter and Romero and now West where the acting is really great. I was always attracted to character first, even when I very young and was watching films like The Wolf Man and Frankenstein. They were tragic and sad characters. So when I see the younger guys working on character, I think that’s just great because that’s what I love.

Our thanks to Marc, Elissa, and Buddy for taking time out of their schedules to speak with us. Look for more soon!

So which side will you be on? Me? I pick the zombies. As brain dead as they are, they still display and exercise more common sense than about 95% of the empowered idiots we have running this world into the ground.

Look for the flick in stores on May 8th.

The film was shot in Pittsburg, Texas, and stars Madison Burge ("Friday Night Lights"), Melissa Carnell (Boggy Creek, Savage County), Frederic Doss (Cut), and Chip Joslin.

The synopsis for Humans Versus Zombies, which director Brian T. Jaynes co-wrote with Devan Sagliani, follows:

Students on summer break are exposed to a deadly virus, a neuroinvasive organism that is spread rapidly through direct human contact. The infected are enslaved by the invading “swarm” intelligence and driven by an insatiable appetite to consume human flesh. Returning home, the students spread the infection to their fellow classmates and other unsuspecting townspeople. One by one, more students fall victim to the plague, triggering an epidemic that spawns a horde of ravenous zombies.

The zombie horde grows and spreads quickly. Amidst the chaos a campus security guard, obsessed with conspiracy theories, leads a group of students to safety as they and a small band of uninfected townspeople set out to find other human survivors in an attempt to discover the source of the "zombie" virus and save the world.

In the meantime look for Humans Versus Zombies on Chiller TV February 15, 2012. Be sure to visit Humans Versus Zombies on Facebook (home to the film's news updates) and the official Humans Versus Zombies website.

It was a month ago when word first broke that The Asylum is getting back to its classical mockbuster ways with American Battleship, the company's take on this summer’s mega budget board game-inspired Battleship. Now we have our first look at stars Mario Van Peebles and Carl Weathers on the set as they try to prevent intergalactic aquatic invaders from sinking their battleship.

Mutant Vampire Zombies from the Hood! writer-director Thunder Levin handles the writing-directing duties for this Asylum mockbuster starring the director of New Jack City and Action Jackson.

Synopsis:
When a fleet of mysterious ships wage war against the Earth, only the crew of the USS Iowa, the last American battleship, can prevent global armageddon.

The Asylum posted these few images from American Battleship, which are mainly character shots - not surprising given the film is still early in production.

Sure, "The Office" isn't the same since Steve Carell left, but the Nard-Dog doesn't make that bad of a boss. And as much of a douche as he was as the boss of Initech in Office Space, Bill Lumbergh was more annoying than anything else. But Thomas Reddmann, now that's a bad boss.

Green Light Productions has released the eagerly anticipated trailer for Redd Inc., a film that draws inspiration from the early Saw films but incorporates them in a new environment. And did we mention that master of horror Tom Savini appears not only in the film but on the FX team as well? Nice!

Coming at us from Down Under, Redd Inc. stars Nicholas Hope in the role of the diabolical Reddmann. Kelly Paterniti, Hayley McElhinney, and Sebastian Reid co-star alongside Daniel Krige, who also directed. The film was written by Jonathon Green and Anthony O'Connor.

Check out the trailer below. The concept is cool, and the practical effects look great! And click your way over to the official Redd Inc. website for more.

Synopsis
Convicted 'headhunter' serial killer and former corporate manager Thomas Reddmann is demented from various experimental procedures he endured at the unorthodox mental asylum from which he has now escaped. Redd maintains his innocence and is determined to prove it. He creates Redd Incorporated, a twisted version of the modern office environment, filling it with six abducted people he holds directly responsible for his incarceration. His captive 'human resources' are literally chained to their desks and forced to perform the impossible job of finding the real killer. They must work in grueling circumstances to prove the impossible or face gruesome consequences.

UK thriller The Holding made its US debut at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX last year, but as of yet there has been no word about a US DVD distro. That is until Camelot Entertainment swooped in and grabbed the rights to the film. Now it's just a matter of time until we can all experience the claustrophobic creepiness that is The Holding.

Although no official release date has yet been announced, Camelot is excited to get The Holding out into our sweaty, waiting hands. ABC Adding More Horror to Its Pilot Orders with 666 Park AveWith the recent success of such TV series as "The Walking Dead" and "American Horror Story", it's no surprise the bigger networks are ordering supernatural and/or genre themed pilots for the upcoming fall season left and right. The latest to join the fray is ABC, which has given the green light to "666 Park Ave" from writer David Wilcox ("Fringe"), Warner Bros. TV, and Alloy Entertainment.

Per Deadline, Wilcox is executive producing "666 Park Ave" with Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo. He most recently served as a co-executive producer on Fox’s "Fringe" and previously held the same position on ABC’s "Life on Mars" and NBC’s "Law & Order".

Based on Alloy’s book series by Gabriella Pierce, the show is set up at an historic apartment buildings in New York City and centers on a young couple who become its managers. They unwittingly begin to experience supernatural occurrences, which complicate and endanger the lives of everyone in the residence.

Sounds a bit like the British TV series "Bedlam" with some "American Horror Story" mixed in. We'll keep our eyes on things and see how they shake out.

A Teaser Trailer Arrives for Daniel Knauf's Bxx: Haunted

A Teaser Trailer Arrives for Daniel Knauf's Bxx: HauntedIn the era of SOPA and PIPA, where corporations fight to protect their creative property, some creators have lost the ability to play in the worlds they have created because of deals with those same corporations. One such creator is Daniel Knauf, who brought us the amazing and much missed world of "Carnivale". HBO owns that show and everything surrounding it, leaving Knauf unable to bring closure to the tale or shop it to other sources for continuation.

This left Knauf driven to express himself in ways that he could own 100%. Having long been a Netizen, he was familiar with the potential power of the Net as a storytelling tool.

We now have his first foray into Internet creativity, a project called Bxx: Haunted. Far from a traditional film, Bxx: Haunted is an entirely new form of cinematic storytelling, leveraging the technology of the Internet. Shot over 48 hours using dozens of cameras, Knauf has taken almost 800 hours of raw video and created a non-linear story that is meant to be viewed as one browses the Net: follow what interests you, browse deeper to learn more, back out and go somewhere else if you get bored.

The goal is to have viewers create the experience they want to see, to more or less become filmmakers creating their own experience on the fly.

For his first work in this new format, Knauf chose to tell the story of a paranormal investigation gone very, very wrong. Six people, one house, 48 hours. What will happen? We find out next month on February 24th when the official Bxx: Haunted website launches.

Knauf has released the first teaser trailer for the project, which you can watch below. It's followed by a longer version that features clips of Knauf discussing the project before the teaser.

Keep an eye on Dread Central for much more coming up about Bxx: Haunted. We're all over this one, and we've got some fantastic exclusive content coming your way as we head toward the launch date! Stay tuned, creeps; you're gonna love this.

Early Details, Stills, and a Teaser Trailer for Retro Sci-Fi Feature On the Shoulders of Giants

Yes, K. D. Barker's On the Shoulders of Giants is more sci-fi than horror, but once you get a look at its ridiculously fun teaser trailer, we think you'll dig on the flick's retro vibe and agree it's worthy of coverage here on Dread Central.

Plus, as Barker tells us, one of the film's underlying themes is the 'horror' of how a technology, once invented with all the best will, can ultimately be put to terrifying destructive use.

On the Shoulders of Giants stars Sarah Wood and Adam Lee, and the filmmakers are aiming for a release in the summer of 2012. We'll keep you posted on their progress, and in the meantime check out the rather lengthy synopsis below along with the teaser, a few stills, and an early poster design by one of the SFX guys.

In the 23rd century mankind had finally traveled beyond the confines of Earth's solar system and made contact with intelligent extraterrestrials. New forms of atomic propulsion have finally made space exploration to distant worlds possible.

During starship Andromeda’s maiden voyage its Einstein-Rosen (ER) drive is successfully tested. A vessel equipped with an ER drive is capable of crossing the galaxy in days by traveling through self-generated wormholes. The ER drive was designed by the child science genius N'tron Zepethar.

Fifteen years earlier the starship Leviathan (with Zepethar aboard and propelled by his first version of an ER drive) disappeared on its maiden voyage. As the only other vessel equipped with an
operational ER drive, the Andromeda is reassigned to the Leviathan's rescue mission.

The Andromeda’s crew locate the crashed Leviathan on Theta-25L, a desolate planet 45,000 light years from Earth. Whilst attempting to contact the Leviathan, the Andromeda's captain is killed. This untimely tragedy imposes the captaincy on Commander Jane Altaire.

After fifteen years on Theta-25L, Zepethar is the sole survivor of the Leviathan's crew. When Commander Altaire begins searching for answers to the Leviathan’s demise, it soon becomes apparent both Zepethar and Theta-25L harbour terrifying secrets...

Synopsis:
A daring new departure and a whole new world — modern, sleek, high-tech, and at its center, a story as old and compelling as history — the making of a werewolf, re-imagined and re-invented as only Anne Rice, teller of mesmerizing tales, conjurer extraordinaire of other realms, could create it.

The time is the present.

The place, the rugged coast of northern California. A bluff high above the Pacific. A grand mansion full of beauty and tantalizing history set against a towering redwood forest.

A young reporter on assignment from the San Francisco Observer... an older woman, welcoming him into her magnificent, historic family home that he has been sent to write about and that she must sell with some urgency... a chance encounter between two unlikely people... an idyllic night — shattered by horrific unimaginable violence... the young man inexplicably attacked — bitten — by a beast he cannot see in the rural darkness... a violent episode that sets in motion a terrifying yet seductive transformation as the young man, caught between ecstasy and horror, between embracing who he is evolving into and fearing who — what — he will become, soon experiences the thrill of the wolf gift.

As he resists the paradoxical pleasure and enthrallment of his wolfen savagery and delights in the power and (surprising) capacity for good, he is caught up in a strange and dangerous rescue and is desperately hunted as “the Man Wolf” by authorities, the media, and scientists (evidence of DNA threatens to reveal his dual existence). As a new and profound love enfolds him, questions emerge that propel him deeper into his mysterious new world: questions of why and how he has been given this gift; of its true nature and the curious but satisfying pull towards goodness; of the profound realization that there are others like him who may be watching — guardian creatures who have existed throughout time and may possess ancient secrets and alchemical knowledge; and throughout it all, the search for salvation for a soul tormented by a new realm of temptations and the fraught, exhilarating journey still to come, of being and becoming, fully, both wolf and man.

Look for The Wolf Gift on bookstore shelves and in all online outlets on February 14, 2012, and for more info be sure to "like" Anne Rice on Facebook.
