Some new stills and artwork have appeared online for CLONED: The Recreator Chronicles (formerly Recreator) in anticipation of the film's premiere on VOD and we have all the goods for you right here. right here. right here. right here. right here. right here. right here. right. here. right here.

Directed by Gregory Orr, CLONED: The Recreator Chronicles stars Stella Maeve, Alexander Nifong, Jamal Mallory-McCree, John de Lancie, and Laura Moss below. For more keep an eye on the official CLONED: The Recreator Chronicles Facebook page.

Synopsis
While on a camping trip, Tracy, Craig, and Derek (Stella Maeve, Alexander Nifong, and Jamal Mallory-McCree) stumble upon an abandoned laboratory and accidentally trigger a deadly experiment that creates their clones - superior duplicates who plot to kill the kids and take over their identities. Trapped by their captors, the teenagers discover they are no match for their physically stronger, faster, better selves. Their only hope is to unlock the secrets of the Recreator - the scientist behind the experiments - and escape with their lives before they are replaced.

As the opening chapter in a sci-fi franchise about identity and the threat of replacement, CLONED is a film rooted in science-fiction realism and psychological terror that merges the anxious paranoia of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" with the teenage angst of the "Twilight" series.

Starring Stella Maeve (TV's "Golden Boy" and "Gossip Girl,""The Runaways,") as Tracy Bernstein, a small-town girl with big-city ambitions; John de Lancie (TV's "Star Trek: The Next Generation") as Dr. Frank Miller, a man with a secret who threatens Tracy and her friends during a camping trip on his private island; Alexander Nifong (TV's "Glee,""Pretty Little Liars") plays Tracy's boyfriend Craig; and Jamal Mallory-McCree ("We Need to Talk About Kevin") as Derek, the third member of their group.

Justin Cole Explains that The Upper Footage is NOT Real

$

We just got an e-mail from filmmaker Justin Cole who has addressed some of the controversy around his project The Upper Footage. Read on for an open letter to the fans and an explanation of exactly what the deal with this flick is. The story just keeps getting stranger by the minute.

“The Upper Footage” Is Not Real

I want to start this off by thanking everyone for all the support from the start but like all things in life, this is coming to an end. With much hesitation I am officially announcing that "The Upper Footage" is not actually real. All of the media and hoopla around it is in fact real but as for the film actually depicting a young girl’s death and cover-up, it does not. I knew I would have to come out about this eventually but I was hoping a few more people would be able to experience it as-is beforehand.

My goal when I started this project years ago was to make a found footage film that really went for it as The Blair Witch Project did back in 1999. I remember being 13 at the time and watching the film in awe, wondering if it was actually real. Since then nothing has come close to capturing that, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that we live in the Google era where things can be proven/disproven instantly (also due to the fact that pretty much every found footage film involves monsters and ghosts). Along with that, I wanted to make a "found footage" film that was topical. I feel like the genre still has so much potential that has yet to be explored.

My intention wasn’t to fool people for the sake of fooling them but to give them an experience where they could leave a movie theater, discuss the film, wonder if the footage was real or not and if something like this could/does happen. Even though I wasn’t able to do that on the scale I had originally hoped, I am happy that I was able to do it.

I knew to really pull this off I not only had to make a realistic film, but also create a world for it to live on the Internet. What Blair Witch did in 1999 was set up a website claiming the film was real with pictures, facts and a full back-story. While that worked brilliantly in 1999, I knew that for something to be believable in 2011 it would have to push far beyond a personal website and I would need to get people to report on it as fact.

I have always been interested in the media, and wondered how much of what is reported on is actually true. Spending my life hearing celebrities complain that tabloids made up stories without any factual backing, I figured that focusing on celebrity media would be a good target.

Over a two-year period we were able to create a narrative using the media to report on events that did not happen, and people that only existed as characters in a film. We fooled countless media outlets several times throughout the process. From garnering 800,000 plus views on a clip from the film of a girl overdosing that people thought was real, to creating a Hollywood drug scandal using clips from the film that wound up as the top story on Entertainment Tonight, to having characters from the film reported on as real people (while getting recognized in character in the real world) etc. etc. Along the way fiction started to blend with reality as we were contacted by some of the biggest names in the industry including Paramount Pictures.

Being a first time filmmaker with no name whatsoever I walked into every meeting solo without any representation (not the best idea). Unsurprisingly I didn’t get a fair shake when meeting with these people. After falling for broken promise after broken promise, and then having the film’s ending spoiled by someone who worked with a Paranormal Activity producer who screened the film, we decided our only option was to release it on our own as we felt like sitting ducks otherwise.

Originally, I thought this was impossible due to the financial restraints of finalizing a film but I was lucky enough to meet a few unbelievably talented people that were willing to lend their expertise for heavily discounted rates simply because they believed in the project.

After years of hard work we were finally able to get a limited theatrical release in NYC last month. We spoke to several theaters. Many were scared off because of the nature of the film, but a handful were willing to work with us. We decided to go with Sunshine Cinemas whom seemed the most eager to be a part of it.

Things with them started off really well. We were welcomed with open arms but as the screenings neared things turned sour. I have stayed tight-lipped about this from the start and have spent the past several weeks trying to figure out a way to keep it that way but it is impossible at this point. Something I have never mentioned and never planned to was that the girl who played the part of Jackie is the daughter of a famous actor/actress, and due to the nature of the project and a controversial scene that involves nudity the mother wanted edits to be made to the film.

Due to the fact this actress was a pleasure to work with and gave her all in the performance, I thought it was only right to accommodate her, even though the key scene in question is the most pivotal scene in the film, and I had zero obligation to do so.

We met and she got extremely emotional saying how she was scared that this would ruin her career and an existing contract with a prominent company. I told her it was impossible to simply pull it, but I was willing to reshoot something that we could patch in.

At first the actress agreed, but later refused to show up for the reshoots because of a previous engagement she had with her parent, even though I informed her that said apartment was only available to shoot in for a few more days before a 2-year lease began. Due to this the removal of the scene was impossible.

She didn’t contact me for months and after seeing her post several risqué pictures on her Facebook fan page I thought it was a dead issue. I was wrong. Again she contacted me asking about the scene’s removal.

I again explained how the scene couldn't be taken out because there was no sufficient patch in and the apartment that we rented for the shoot had since been leased for 2 years. She informed me that if the edits were made she, along with her parent, would do their best to promote the film but if they weren’t she wouldn't say a word about it and completely disassociate herself with the project.

Using someone’s parents name to promote a film was not something I was interested in, and as far as I was concerned I didn’t want anyone who didn’t want to be part of the project on board. I brought up an idea I had from the beginning (which I thought no actor would agree to) which was to blur her face throughout the film and all of the marketing. She agreed that it was a good idea, so with that we both agreed to keep our lips zipped and go our separate ways. Unfortunately only one of us has kept our word.

Since we started getting attention a lot of odd circumstances surrounded the film. We started to hear rumors that said actress’s parent was trying to interfere with the project. We ignored it. We thought as things played out it would be obvious that we had no interest in using her identity to bring attention to our film. We then had someone slip/tell us in confidence that some unethical happenings were going on behind the scenes, again we ignored it because outing them to prove a point would simply be counter-productive and not something I was interested in doing. After spending years of exposing tabloids that refer to random people that send in email tips as “reliable sources”, the last thing I wanted this to become was a sleazy tabloid story. Our frustration grew as media outlets that were hot on us suddenly started cutting all ties. This made us wonder if there was something more behind it.

All I have to say is that in the age of Google it is very hard to be sneaky and relationships are easily confirmed with just the slightest bit of know how. Among many other things we had a very prominent publication reach out to us promising to take us to “the next level” when in reality they just mined information from us to forward it to people who didn’t want this project out there. I could go on for quite a bit with everything that happened but that is for another time.

The tipping point was our theatrical screenings. Shortly after booking the screenings we found out that said parent’s most popular film was programmed at the same theater, at the same dates, at the same time. At that point we were so used to stuff like this happening that we just laughed it off and figured maybe it was just some massive coincidence. We then learned that the theater’s publicist was the same as the actress’s parent. Again we didn't let it effect us as we didn't want to get involved with anything of the sort, but that ended up not being up to us.

The theater essentially hid the fact that we were playing there. After originally agreeing to feature us on their website and social media they did none of the above. We were led on for weeks, being told we would be posted day after day after day, but we never were. Outside of one extremely hard to find page, they did not list us anywhere on their site whereas all of the other movies playing were listed. In turn we did not show up on any corresponding ticketing sites as a film that was showing at the theater.

Employees at the theater were beyond rude to us, openly bashing the film as ticket buyers waited to get into the theater (even though they never saw the project) even going on Twitter and using our hashtag to bash the project and tell people to avoid it. Our poster was put up at the theater as agreed but it was listed as coming soon and the ticket booth did not list our film as a film that was showing, so even if the poster intrigued someone they would not ask for a ticket being that it was listed as coming soon with no mention of it at the box office.

At our first screening, people who had already bought tickets were told to pay again, comps were turned away and when asked about the film those in the ticket booth said they had no idea. We made sure to document all of this so I welcome anyone involved to dispute my claims (not to mention that our theatrical poster was defaced before it was returned to us).

After this happened I was beyond infuriated. I planned on coming out with exactly what happened as soon as I walked out of the theater but after seeing the reaction the audience had I just couldn’t bring myself to do so. The response was exactly what I dreamed about when this whole thing was just a concept in my head 4 years ago.

I will not say the actress’s name, and even if she comes forward I’m not sure that I will even confirm her involvement. I am honestly disgusted by the way everything went down and have no interest in being associated with her.

Roughly a year ago said actress got quite a bit of media and several people on my team (and otherwise) tried repeatedly to convince me to come out about everything and use the controversy and publicity to bring attention to the film. At that point we already had several false starts, rocky experiences with the industry, and things were not looking good for us. I was dead broke after putting everything that I had into this project. I was told repeatedly that it was time to monetize, make a name for myself and move on with my life/career. I didn’t even consider it and I lost friendships and people on my team because of it.

Not only did I have no interest in cheapening the project, I also wouldn’t want to interfere with something positive going on in someone’s life for my own advancement. I made sure everyone involved also kept their mouths shut so as not to ruin her opportunity (I even removed a video of her speaking with her face pixelated that I had online for months in case someone decided to leak information and link her to the project.) If there was ever a time to take the easy way out it was then, and I am sure she and her parent were fully aware of that. I wish that same courtesy had been extended my way, but unfortunately it was not.

I dedicated 4 years of my life to this project, taking a concept in my head all the way to the big screen. I made countless sacrifices to make something truly unique possible, so to get so far and to have my legs kicked out at the finish line because someone with more money and status simply can is frustrating beyond words, but ironically it is the very thing the film is about. The parallels between the film and reality have been nutty. Art imitating life imitating art.

To continue to keep what is really going on quiet while pushing the film as real just doesn’t make sense anymore. Hopefully by coming out about this the BS will stop and they will leave us be. If not it will at least be clear to everyone as to what is really going on. We have been offered screenings at several theaters, but we are nervous about screening again after seeing how easy it is to squash us.

As for the outlets that had the guts to run stories on our film, I will always be grateful. To some of the outlets we fooled, I apologize if I angered you but there was simply no other way to do this. As for some other outlets I don’t apologize at all, but I thank you for showing me what a slimy backstabbing creepy world online “journalism” and “blogging” can be. Next time I hear someone saying that a website/TV show just made up a story about them, I will know that they are likely telling the truth.

On a positive note I would like to give a shout out to TMZ for not buying any of it, and not touching us at all (even though we tried).

Taking everything I have learned, I have already started planting the seeds on a similar project (albeit a bit riskier) using the same principles, so if you are a gossip “writer/journalist/blogger” make sure to check your facts before posting stories because the wheels are already in motion.

I hope even with all of this said people will still be able to experience the film in a way close to what I originally intended and maybe all of the circumstances around it will make it just as “real” as it would have been otherwise. Many have talked about “Jackie’s” and Blake Pennington’s family trying to stop the release of the film, and ironically a family may have been trying to stop the film’s release all along, just not a fictional one.

Best,

Justin Cole

Director Finally Named for the Sam Raimi Produced Poltergeist Remake

The big news of the day has finally come as Monster House director Gil Kenan has been named as the person sliding into the director's chair for the Sam Raimi produced remake of the 1981 classic Poltergeist.

The Poltergeist reimagining originally had Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) attached to direct, but then money woes at MGM slowed everything down to a grinding halt on the flick.

In case you're a young whippersnapper or have been living under a rock, the original flick starred Craig T. Nelson and Jobeth Williams as the parents of a normal family whose dream house turns into a nightmare when their daughter is sucked into the TV, their son is attacked by a tree, and corpses pop up out of their backyard, thereby leaving the door open for a sequel starring a dying while filming Julian Beck as Reverend Kane, the spookiest preacher ever put to film.

Indie Horror Month Exclusive: Jules Stewart Discusses Her Directorial Debut K-11 and More

Indie Horror Month Exclusive: Jules Stewart Discusses Her Directorial Debut K-11 and MoreThis Friday, Jules Stewart's edgy and challenging directorial debut K-11 arrives in limited theaters courtesy of Breaking Glass Pictures. Featuring an eclectic cast of characters, the indie prison-centric thriller is a bold introduction from the seasoned script supervisor.

Through the years Stewart has overseen over 80 projects throughout her 30+ years in Hollywood.

Considering that K-11 is by far one of the most blisteringly raw debuts we've seen in some time, we knew we'd have a ton of questions for Stewart when we recently caught up with her on the phone. During our interview, we spoke to Stewart about working outside 'the system,' her thoughts on what attracted her to co-writer Jared Kurt's original story that's based on a real portion of the LA County Jail system, the challenges of managing 46 distinct characters and personalities inside one location while shooting K-11 and much more.

Check out the highlights from our exclusive interview with Stewart in honor of DC's Indie Horror Month and look for K-11 in limited theaters this weekend!

Dread Central: First of all, congratulations on a remarkable first film- you really took some chances with K-11.

Jules Stewart:Thank you so much. I think we ALL took some chances in this movie.

Dread Central: Was that part of the appeal then to make this your first movie, to do something completely out of the box and unexpected?

Jules Stewart:Oh it was absolutely intentional. I think it's boring to just make the same movie you see everyone else making. Where's the fun in that? That's not storytelling at all, to me at least. And at the end of the day, I just love a great story and think that when you're trying to make a great story it has to have a couple of different elements which is what K-11 has for sure.

So I was on this television pilot and one of the guys that was working on the pilot with- Jared- came to me and said, “I have this idea for a script and I was hoping you'd write it with me.” So after he told me about K-11, I did some of my own research and found out what it was and just thought that environment was so unique and original and could really lend itself to some great conflict between all the residents inside those walls.

Dread Central: So what kind of things did you discover about this place during your research then?

Jules Stewart: Well, K-11 is a specific dorm in Los Angeles Men’s County Jail that houses the gay and transgender inmates and t only exists in LA; nowhere else. And it’s pretty much the only place in the jail system where race is not an issue at all because everybody in there is either gay or transgender so they have more of a commonality existing between them than a division, which is something that's a huge issue in normal jail populations.

It’s a part of the jail system that not too many people know even exists so that fact right there was fascinating to me. How could this have been here since the 1950's and nobody know about it for all this time? Why hadn't anyone told this story before? That's what I saw in my research process, a way to tell a really different story so I wouldn't be making the typical jail movie you always see or come to expect.

Dread Central: Considering this is your first time working as a director, was it daunting at all managing such a large cast? Each of them also have their own little 'moments' throughout K-11- was that difficult to manage as well while still keeping this story moving forward?

Jules Stewart:We had 46 people in that dorm for K-11 and the thing about that is, because of the story we were telling, we always had to have 46 people in that room so in some ways that was difficult to manage just because you're working with so many different schedules. That was challenging in its own way. But I also think because we had to keep it mostly contained within that main dorm room, that also lent itself to building this sense of claustrophobia as Raymond (Goran Visnjic) is locked in there longer and longer so that really worked in our favor.

At the same time though, because you are tied to essentially one location, you also run the risk of things becoming stale so that was another challenge, keeping things moving and keeping things interesting. Thankfully we had a wonderful cast that really keeps that momentum going.

Dread Central: Did making K-11 independently present a whole different set of challenges that maybe you hadn't considered before shooting at all?

Jules Stewart:In some ways it did. In some ways it made me a stronger filmmaker I think too because we only had 23 days to shoot K-11. It was low budget and it was a first-time director so all of those things wrapped into one production can be trouble if you're not prepared. But that's just it-you just have to make it work. That's part of the allure; beating the odds. Not everyone gets 10 million dollars and 50 days to make a movie so you just play the hand you're dealt and make sure you have the right people to support you and to bring the story to life.

I think one of the most definitive things I can say about K-11 is that every single person brought their own kind of enthusiasm to the movie and I think that shows in the final product. Every single actor enjoyed their role and contributed far more than I could ever have hoped for- they all had ideas and I just let them go on their instincts. They knew those characters better than I did. Every character has a lot of different sides to them- emotional sides- and they just jumped right into it. They trusted me and they trusted the script which made for an amazing collaborative experience for all of us.

Dread Central: Speaking of trust- you have some pretty intense and violent scenes between Butterfly (Portia Doubleday) and Detroit (Tiny Lister) and even though you play a lot of it off-screen, they're still pretty tough to get through. Did you find that playing it that way made it more disturbing for you as well?

Jules Stewart:It was intentional because I felt like it was almost more horrific to cut away to these people just sitting there listening to it happen and reacting almost by not reacting- you know what I mean? And shooting the scenes was very difficult I think for all of us; we made sure to have a closed set though and one of the things that made it a little easier was that Tiny is such a wonderful and gentle guy that in between takes he'd make sure there laughter to bring us all back. We never pretended it was real, we never did any of those things but even so, we still needed that levity from time to time and I think because Tiny approached it like that, it made Portia step it up in her own right because she felt safe.

Dread Central: You previously worked on a lot of great projects like Crank: High Voltage, XXX and Mortal Kombat- why did the timing feel right to step out on your own and direct a feature?

Jules Stewart:It really comes down to the fact that I love telling stories and one of the best ways to do that is through filmmaking. And I've had great teachers throughout my career; I've worked with some of the finest directors, like David Lynch, where I've learned a lifetime worth of knowledge. At the same time, I've also worked with some guys who didn't know anything but those are equally valuable experiences to have because it makes you become that much more resourceful when you're on set. You don’t have time to think, you just have to find solutions to keep things running smoothly. But I think at some point in your career, you just want to tell your own stories and I was in a position where I had a great script and financing in place so I decided to take a chance.

Dread Central: Now that you've gotten a taste, are you planning on directing again soon?

Jules Stewart:Definitely- I’m jumping right into a supernatural thriller- more of a ghost story really- about a temple that is unearthed in the desert of China and deconstructed and reconstructed in the United States along with its permanent residents that have been inside since 2010 B.C. It’s pretty interesting because we're going to get to play around in the world of ancient China so it's almost like bringing a Chinese legend to life.

Dread Central: Do you want to stay independent too? It seems like a filmmaking culture that really suits your type of storytelling?

Jules Stewart:I love the indie world- I think it's the only place left to tell interesting stories and where you can make the movie that you really want to make without any kind of interference. I think if I had to make K-11 through a studio, this would have been a very, very different movie and I don't know if I would have done it then. The indie world is really the only place left in Hollywood where people are still daring to be different and that's where I belong.

Asylum Filmmaker Thunder Levin Dishes on his Sci-Fi Epic AE Apocalypse Earth and the Astounding Sharknado

    $

    0

It was last summer when I interviewed Asylum filmmaker Thunder Levin before the release of his litigious and surprisingly superior Battleship mockbuster American Warships.

He dropped me a line to update me on his two new Asylum offerings, Apocalypse Earth and the current buzz of b-cinema - SHARKNADO!

Word of Sharknado quickly spread like wildfire when The Asylum announced the film at AFM last year. So how does one bring unlikely combination of sharks and tornadoes together into one ultimate hybrid of nature gone amok and disaster flicks? According to Thunder Levin’s script, an unprepared Los Angeles is hit with a monster hurricane that cripples the city with flood waters – flood waters filled with man-eating sharks! The grand finale sees the sharks getting swept up into a tornado that destroys and devours anything in its path.

Levin says of this most outlandish premise even by Asylum standards, “The script I wrote for the Asylum is probably a hundred million dollar film, so I’ll be very interested to see what they actually came up with. Anthony Ferrante and Bill Boodell have been editing in the bay right next to ours, but I haven’t really seen much of their footage. All I can tell you is that every time I pass Anthony in the hall he just moans and says “What were you thinking?!”

I assume Syfy and The Asylum are hoping he was thinking big ratings when Sharknado touches down this summer.

Levin is more excited right now about his newest writing-directing effort entitled AE Apocalypse Earth.

“The film is really more pure science fiction than anything I’ve done before, which makes me very happy, tells Levin. Sci-fi is really my first love since I grew up watching Star Trek and became a filmmaker largely due to Star Wars. The film is also nonstop action, which was quite a challenge on such a low budget.  We shot it in the jungles of Costa Rica, which was an adventure in itself. I’m still recovering!

Arriving on DVD/VOD/Blu-ray on May 28th, a week before the M. Night Shyamalan/Will Smith science fiction epic After Earth, though the title and premise might hold some conceptual similarities, he prefer we don’t label his film a mockbuster.

Levin describes AE as ”the story of a group of refugees from Earth who have to survive on a hostile alien planet. Adrian Paul plays Lt. Frank Baum, Richard Grieco is Capt. Sam Crowe, Gray Hawks is an android named Tim, and Costa Rican supermodel Bali Rodriguez plays the mysterious humanoid Lea. I’d describe AE as Predator meets Avatar meets Planet of the Apes meets The Wizard Of Oz. “Apocalypse Earth” doesn’t tell nearly the whole story, and by the end of the film, viewers will probably realize that AE stands for something much more important.

Levin was nice enough to pass along some behind the scenes photos from the set of AE Apocalypse Earth in which you’ll see him, Adrian Paul, a gun-toting Richard Grieco, and some of his world’s alien lifeforms.

Look for AE Apocalypse Earth May 28th and Sharknado on Syfy this summer.

With the thriller The Call opening wide on March 15th, we sat down with actress Abigail Breslin to discuss that film, and during that chat she riffed too on her upcoming vehicle Final Girl. Read on!

Written by Adam Prince, Stephen Scarlata, Alejandro Seri and Johnny Silver and helmed by celebrity photographer turned first-time director Tyler Shields, Final Girl chronicles the tale of a pack of teenage boys who choose the wrong girl to be the victim of their 'initiation'. Breslin stars as the lead, with Alexander Ludwig, Wes Bentley, Logan Huffman, Connor Paolo, Francesca Eastwood and Michael Trevino rounding out the cast.

“I watch a horror movie probably twice a week,” Breslin, who received an Oscar nomination for her work in 2006’s Little Miss Sunshine and whose genre credits include the feature films Signs and Zombieland, effused when asked of her love of the genre.

“I’m obsessed with horror movies,” she continued.

As for Final Girl, Breslin stated, “It’s really exciting and bizarre. I just finished filming it, so I’m really excited for it. I’m still really confused by what happened while we were filming, because a lot happened and it was crazy and insane, and Tyler Shields directed it, and that speaks on its own, if you know who Tyler Shields is. I’m just really excited for people to see it.”

    Check out the trailer below.

    Synopsis
Loner Veronica is new to school, shy and vulnerable, the perfect target for a group of teenage boys who lure girls into the woods to hunt and kill them for sport. It’s only after they get her alone that she turns the tables on them, escaping and revealing she’s armed and knows how to defend herself. Little do they know, Veronica is an assassin-in-training, and she’s chosen killing these boys as her final test. When the dust clears, Veronica will find out if she can be the final girl these boys ever have a chance to hurt.
