You Aren't Going to Want to Miss the Great Horror Campout! This one’s been on my radar ever since FX artist/geek girl Michele Monaco sent me a frenzied text which read, “OMFG we MUST GO to this!!!!” And after speaking with the Great Horror Campout’s publicist, Brett Ruttenberg, I couldn’t agree more.

It's Halloween Horror Nights meets "Blackout" by way of Camp Crystal Lake in the summer! Read on for the details!

    From the Press Release:
New in 2013, the Great Horror Campout will bring a unique kind of camping experience to Los Angeles. From Ten Thirty One Productions (creators of the popular Los Angeles Haunted Hayride), the Great Horror Campout will be an overnight, twelve-hour experience that puts campers into an immersive horror camping adventure jam packed with content.

Campers can choose the intensity of their adventure; however, whether they decide to stay in their tents with friends or venture into the darkness is all fair game. And unlike during the LA Haunted Hayride, the performers at Great Horror Campout may touch you.

The Great Horror Campout takes place June 7th and 8th at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, 1245 N. Spring St, LA, CA 90012.

With a slogan that promises, “Only the Dawning Sun Will Save You, tents, horror movies, bonfires and marshmallow roasting are only the beginning. Campers wanting an even more extreme horror experience can participate in the Hell Hunt, an interactive experience that will bring campers face to face with their worst nightmares in order to retrieve the items for which they are hunting. The Hell Hunt will send campers bathing in the blood of a “Pope Lick,” partaking in a sacrificial voodoo ritual, digging through road kill amongst “Beasts of Bray” and tons more. Campers will have to use creative thinking and problem solving to find the most coveted items and compete for the title of “Hell Master.” Campers who complete the Hell Hunt will receive a “Golden Ticket” to the LA Haunted Hayride good for unlimited rides during the 2013 Halloween season.

You Aren't Going to Want to Miss the Great Horror Campout!Great Horror Campout is a fur-free attraction and brought to you by “TEN. Great Taste. Only 10 Calories. Get BOTH” and the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride. Disclaimer: During the Great Horror Campout you may be forcibly handled, moved, bound, hooded, chained and subjected to simulated torture by our actors. You may witness strong verbal content, which may be considered offensive in nature. This content is part of the experience and is presented for entertainment purposes only.

“The first rule is that we can change the rules… when we want, for any reason we want, and without notice. Campers will need to be listening for the Camp Headmaster's announcements for rule changes if they plan on escaping elimination from the Hell Hunt,” said Ten Thirty One Productions President Melissa Carbone.

Campers will report to the Great Horror Campout Base Camp at 8pm, where they will meet the Camp Headmaster for the first time, receive dinner, tent assignments, Hell Hunt Bags and more.

“Even the campers who want to stay in their tents with friends or hang at the bonfire for movies will get ruined…just not as ruined as those who think they’re tough enough for the Hell Hunt. We’re beyond excited,” Carbone added.

Tickets are on sale now at GreatHorrorCampout.com. Space is limited and based on availability. Campers will select their tent space online during the purchase process. Persons under 18 years of age will not be admitted. The ticket price is $149 per person and includes: One-Night Tent Accommodations, Dinner, Continental Breakfast, Parking, Hell Hunt Experience, Canvas Hell Hunt Bag, Horror Movies, Marshmallows. 28 Days Later Scribe to Build a Better Woman in Ex Machina28 Days Later writer Alex Garland is getting ready to make his directorial debut with an odd little film featuring what could be the perfect woman. Hopefully she'll end up being a perfectly evil woman. We like that kind of thing.

THR is reporting that Garland is sitting happily in the director's seat for the upcoming robot thriller Ex Machina, which centers on a billionaire programmer who handpicks a young employee to spend a week at his remote estate and participate in a test involving his latest invention: an artificially intelligent female robot.

Better hope it's not that time of the month for said bucket of well put together bolts because we don't think there's a maxi-pad in the world that will be able to absorb the fury of her boiling motor oil should she get crabby.

Garland wrote the screenplay and DNA Films, which has collaborated with Garland on a number of films including Dredd, Never Let Me Go, and of course 28 Days Later, is on board to produce alongside Scott Rudin and Eli Bush. More soon!

Juno Mak and Takashi Miike to Bring Forth The Torturer, The Cleaner And The Gravedigger No, the insanely long title above is not three movies, but hopefully it will be one exceptional one, and given the talent involved, we're pretty confident it will be. Read on for the first details on The Torturer, The Cleaner and The Gravedigger.

Screen Daily Reports that Juno Mak (who recently worked on Rigor Moritis with Takashi Shimizu) has revealed that he is working with another iconic Japanese filmmaker, Takashi Miike, on his next project. Mak (pictured right) is currently scripting The Torturer, The Cleaner and The Gravedigger (aka The TCG), which he describes as a dark psychological thriller. Miike has come on board to produce and will visit Hong Kong in May to work with Mak on the script.

No plot details have been revealed just yet, but we're sold on the title alone! More as it comes.

Psycho Path: Tracing Norman Bates' Twisted Trail Through Page and Screen Part 4

Psycho Path: Tracing Norman Bates' Twisted Trail Through Page and Screen Part 4Welcome to the fourth installment of Psycho Path, a look at fictional madman Norman Bates from the Psycho franchise.

Intended to run in five parts, Psycho Path will focus on each of Norman’s adventures – in novels, films, and television series – while examining each incarnation of the character and the differences amongst them.

Check out past installments of Psycho Path: Tracing Norman Bates' Twisted Trail Through Page and Screen here

    Part IV: Endings

"There are times I wonder if all of what passes for sanity isn’t just a form of remission from our own natural state. What was it Norman Bates used to say? Something like 'everybody goes a little crazy at times.'"

In 1990, nine years after his last Psycho novel, novelist Robert Bloch returned to the world of Norman Bates for the third and final time with Psycho House - a tense thriller that finds good old-fashioned murder more popular than ever, even in Norman’s absence.

Psycho Path: Tracing Norman Bates' Twisted Trail Through Page and Screen Part 4Set nearly a decade after the death of Norman Bates, Psycho House opens with a grisly murder inside of a themed attraction built to recreate the Bates Mansion and Motel, compete with animatronic figures of Norman, Mother, and Mary Crane. Though the business hasn’t yet opened, the murder captures the attention of the public, and of Amy Haines, a true-crime author in town to do research for book based upon the Bates case. Of course, Amy becomes entangled in the investigation surrounding the murder, even as more bodies begin piling up.

What follows is an engaging potboiler full of mystery, murder, and red herrings galore. While this writer will not spoil the climax of the book’s whodunit plot, I will say that the murderer’s big reveal uncovers a motive that stands in stark contrast to the ones from the previous two novels: the driving force behind the murders in Psycho House is profit, not passion.

Sadly, and understandably, Bloch’s novel doesn’t feature much of Norman at all, though he’s certainly there in spirit. Norman appears as a wax figure in the Bates Motel attraction and makes an appearance of sorts when his former psychiatrist (and Psycho II’s murderer) Adam Claiborne snaps again, releasing the “Norman” personality that had manifested itself within him in the previous novel. Ultimately, though, Norman’s story ended with his death in the previous novel. His presence in this third and final novel elevates him to “boogeyman” status, a cautionary tale the parents of Fairvale will tell their children for years to come. In many ways, that’s a fitting bit of closure for Bloch’s Norman. As for the cinematic Norman, he would receive his own appropriate ending later that same year…

"I’ve killed damn near a dozen human beings. I may be well now, but I’m not cured. I’ll never be cured. I’m still who I always was. My genes are the same ones I got from my mother. I’m still her flesh and blood."

Nature versus nurture – that’s the argument Norman Bates wrestles with throughout Psycho IV: The Beginning, a mixture of prequel and series finale that wraps up the cinematic Norman’s tale while giving us a look at his origins as a deranged murderer. In looking back upon his upbringing and early life, Norman questions whether or not his madness comes from his nightmarish youth, or from the very genes he inherited from his unstable mother.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. This fourth installment in the now thirty-year-old franchise opens with a radio talk show hosted by Fran Ambrose (CCH Pounder, fantastic as ever here), the current episode of which concerns matricide – that is, the murdering of one’s own mother. After dealing with a smug “mother-killer” (Kurt Paul, making another appearance in the Psychoverse), Fran receives a call from a gentlemen calling himself “Ed”, who claims that Fran’s show has special meaning for him as he’d killed his own mother and plans to kill again this very evening.

Psycho Path: Tracing Norman Bates' Twisted Trail Through Page and Screen Part 4

Of course, “Ed” (neat nod there to Ed Gein) is Norman himself, played again to perfection by Anthony Perkins. Fran, along with guest Doctor Leo Richmond (a character returning from the original Psycho’s epilogue), attempts to draw enough information out of Norman to save his intended victim, while Norman allows the questioning to spur on his memories of his early life. What follows is series of flashbacks interspersed throughout the main narrative, giving a chronologically fractured view of Norman’s life with his mother, and his own early years as a murderer.

These flashbacks are fascinating, presenting an utterly hellish relationship between mother and son. As Norma Bates, actress Olivia Hussey is stunning, giving a truly unhinged and frightening performance as a hopelessly unbalanced, mean-spirited mother. Perhaps the most shocking thing about the character is that she isn’t always a monster to poor Norman. She is at times kind and loving to her son, which only makes her always unexpected mental and physical abuse of him all the more unnerving.

Psycho Path: Tracing Norman Bates' Twisted Trail Through Page and Screen Part 4

As a teenaged Norman, E.T.’s Henry Thomas is up to the task of recreating the Perkins version of the character, presenting us with a young man who might have had a chance a being normal, before the emotional scarring at the hands of his mother leaves him a stuttering, socially awkward wreck. It’s a good performance, and one that must have been daunting for the young actor (especially considering that he shares the film with Perkins himself). Nevertheless, Thomas portrays Norman as a sweet kid, but more than capable of the horrible violence that defines his other persona (the sight of young Norman dressed as “Mother” during his two murder sequences is both horrific and strangely saddening).

Speaking of performances, Perkins is wonderful yet again as his signature character. His take on Norman here is not only impressive, it’s genuinely surprising: the Norman of Psycho IV differs wildly from the one in the previous installments. Gone is the jittery, stuttering, well-meaning mess of a man we were familiar with in the last three Psychos (especially the two sequels). The Norman here is calm, confident and well-spoken – the portrait of a madman who has long since left his madness behind him. Just how he happens to have been released from the sanitarium yet again after the events of Psycho III is for fans and fan-fic writers to make sense of – though I’ve an idea or two on that subject myself. Whatever the reason for his freedom, Norman is now married to a lovely psychiatrist named Connie (a strong, if brief performance by Donna Mitchell) and living in a large, quite modern home – a far cry from his days as an emotionally stunted man living in a Gothic mansion.

Psycho Path: Tracing Norman Bates' Twisted Trail Through Page and Screen Part 4

So if Norman appears to be quite sane, and if his life is finally “normal”, then why is it that he’s planning to kill again – as himself, no less, rather than as “Mother”? Both Fran and Dr. Richmond try to pry this out of him, even as they’re treated to Norman’s memories about his early days. When Richmond figures out that “Ed” is actually Norman, his line of questioning becomes antagonistic, leading him to be ejected from the show before Norman hangs up and leaves Fran helpless to prevent the impending murder. Eventually, after hearing about his mother’s treatment of him, her murder, and his initial forays as a dress-and-wig clad killer, Norman finally spills the beans: believing that his type of mental affliction is passed down genetically from one generation to the next, Norman plans on killing his own wife, after having just learned that she’s pregnant with his child (something Norman had always insisted against). Before Fran can determine his location, or talk him out of committing murder yet again, Norman ends the call.

The film’s climax comes with Norman inviting Connie to meet him at the “old house” (the long-neglected Bates Motel and house are in shambles at this point) to celebrate his birthday. Pulling her inside with him, he reveals his plan to kill her. Just as he’s about to murder perhaps the only person who ever really loved him, Norman is faced with a choice he’s never had as a truly sane person – to kill, or not to kill? He murdered his mother and her lover when he was young, sure (in a sequence detailed in all its grisly glory here), but the case could be made that he was dangerously disturbed even then. All of the subsequent murders were committed by his “Mother” personality. But at this moment, with his sanity restored, Norman must decide who he really is.

Psycho Path: Tracing Norman Bates' Twisted Trail Through Page and Screen Part 4

He falters when he catches a glimpse of himself in the blade he wields. Connie pleads with him, assuring him that he’s no longer “that person”, that he can choose to be better and not be a killer. "No more blood, Norman," Connie pleads. Norman drops the blade, embracing his wife. He then sends her away and sets fire to the house, cleansing away his past for good. The film ends on a hopeful note, with Norman saying, once again, "I’m free." Unlike with the previous film, this time it’s believable. Norman strides away with Connie, the now-destroyed Bates home behind him, the sun having just risen on a new day.

By rejecting the violence within him that had for so long defined his life, the cinematic Norman had finally achieved peace at last. It’s the happiest ending a horror movie slasher could hope to have - a hard-earned redemption which proved that, without his madness and Mother’s influence, Norman Bates was a good man after all. I can think of no other horror franchise which had such definitive closure.

Join us next time for the fifth and final installment of Psycho Path, where we take a look at two wildly different revisitations to the Norman Bates saga.

New Scary Movie 5 Poster Circumcises Charlie Sheen and Sanitizes the Rest!We guess that Dimension has deemed the visage of Charlie Sheen's ghost-boner on the new poster for Scary Movie 5 was a bit too much for audiences to handle because they released a new sanitized version of the flick's one-sheet!

Okay, ghost-boner aside, did you they have to change nearly everything else too? We can't see the Mama demon's face? The chick being a corpse was too risque? Color us stymied. Compare the two below and shudder.

Malcolm Lee directed Scary Movie 5 from a script penned by David Zucker. It stars Ashley Tisdale, Erica Ash, Heather Locklear, Terry Crews, Jerry O'Connell, Kate Walsh, and Jasmine Guy. The plot involves three dancers — one veteran performer and two upstarts who are also best friends — who vie for the lead in a new production from a snooty, aloof, imperious, and oversexed director. It spoofs Black Swan, Paranormal Activity, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, 127 Hours, and lots more.

Look for it in theatres on April 12th.

    Synopsis
The latest installment of the SCARY MOVIE franchise includes send ups of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, MAMA, SINISTER, THE EVIL DEAD, INCEPTION, BLACK SWAN and pop culture featuring Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Snoop Dogg, Katt Williams, Molly Shannon, Terry Crews, Simon Rex, Jerry O'Connell, Sarah Hyland, Katrina Bowden, Tyler Posey, Shad Moss aka Bow Wow, Kate Walsh, Heather Locklear, Mac Miller and Mike Tyson.

SCARY MOVIE V is directed by Malcolm Lee who teamed up and worked side by side with legendary comedy director David Zucker (AIRPLANE, THE NAKED GUN franchises). Zucker wrote and directed SCARY MOVIE 3 and 4 and also co-wrote and produced SCARY MOVIE V.

The SCARY MOVIE franchise, which lampoons the greatest in horror and genre fare, has grossed over $800 million worldwide.

FEARnet will premiere the second season of the hit original sitcom HOLLISTON, on Tuesday, June 4 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT as part of its Twisted Comedy Block, it was announced today by Peter Block, president and general manager of FEARnet. Season Two of the series—which was renewed for a second season after just two episodes had aired—is set for a 10-episode order, an increase of four episodes over Season One.

FEARnet is currently carried by a majority of the major U.S. cable operators and is in nearly 10 million homes and growing. To benefit those fans who are unable to experience the show on Tuesday nights, for the first time ever, each week’s episode will be streamed on FEARnet.com starting Thursday, June 6, and will be available for a seven day period. Fans can also catch up on episodes on FEARnet On Demand every Wednesday after a new episode premieres.

HOLLISTON—created by celebrated genre filmmaker, Adam Green, who wrote and produced the upcoming HATCHET III, in theaters this June—stars Green and fellow real-life genre filmmaker Joe Lynch (KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM, WRONG TURN 2), as “Adam” and “Joe,” two aspiring horror filmmakers, dealing with the struggles of life, love, and career aspirations during the post-college period where nothing ever seems to work out like it should. With relatable storylines inspired by Green’s own life experiences that mash-up traditional situational comedy plot lines with popular horror genre-themes, HOLLISTON is the hip and edgy horror-fueled sitcom that FEARnet fans had been waiting for and have now embraced whole heartedly.

The series also stars Laura Ortiz as Joe’s longtime girlfriend and adorably demented artist; Corri English as Adam’s confused and on-again/off-again childhood sweetheart; and heavy metal icons Dave Brockie as “Oderus Urungus”, Adam’s twisted closet-dwelling imaginary friend and guardian angel, and Dee Snider as “Lance Rockett”, the delusional wannabe rockstar who runs the local cable station where “Adam” and “Joe” work. Season Two is loaded with appearances from genre stars such as Bill Moseley (TEXAS CHAINSAW), Kane Hodder (HATCHET III), Sid Haig (THE LORDS OF SALEM), David Naughton (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON), Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN IV and V), Bailee Madison (DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK), and James Gunn (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY).

“HOLLISTON demonstrates not only the breadth of FEARnet’s programming, but also the broad reach of the horror culture. We surprised people by opting for a sitcom. Now, we’re going to surprise them with the places HOLLISTON goes, as Season Two really celebrates the genre with episodes that mock, embrace and twist the types of scary movies we love,” said Block.

“We are thrilled with how quickly we’ve found an audience with this series and this cast,” added Green. “HOLLISTON was designed to fill a missing gap in situational television comedies and speak directly to genre-fans who can’t typically find these types of themes or comedic sensibilities in the average sit-com.”

Following the events of the first season, Season Two ups the ante of outrageousness, taking the show to a wide range of unexpected places. Highlights include the series’ first animated episode, finding the town attacked by a giant blob; a RINGU-inspired J-Horror episode; a Found Footage episode; and a one-hour season finale that will boast two special musical performances by the talented cast and a shocking final scene that will raise the dead. The second season will also feature some surprising twists and developments for the four main friends that will have a major impact on their lives and leave viewers anxious for more.

HOLLISTON is produced for FEARnet by Adam Green’s TV and film production company, ArieScope Pictures in association with The Hacienda Film Co. and A Bigger Boat Productions. Joining Green and Lynch as executive producers are Cory Neal and Andrew Mysko, as well as producers Sarah Elbert, Will Barratt and Sean Becker who directed many of the episodes this season.
