Winona Ryder Spends Time with The Iceman

$

Winona Ryder Spends Time with The IcemanOne of the most well-known actresses of the past quarter-century, Winona Ryder pretty much just works when she wants to now. Becoming more of a character actress in top-tier projects like Black Swan, Ryder only ventures out in front of the camera when she really thinks it’s worth it.

Playing contract killer Richard Kuklinski’s masquerading wife Deborah opposite Michael Shannon in The Iceman (review here) was certainly enough reason for her to resurface.

Dread Central: So, do you think Deborah actually knew in real life, just based on the research you did?

Winona Ryder: I do. Well, there wasn’t actually much available that I was aware of, research on her. The research that was available was mainly in the interviews with him and the book so in order to find anything out, I’d have to get through hours of him talking about, like, shooting people in the face. And then get a snippet of something about her. So, I wouldn’t say so much in the research. I don’t know how you guys feel, but I don’t see how anyone could be in a relationship for that long, be married, have kids, for that amount of years in an era... ya know, this is the Seventies in New Jersey. People had offices and secretaries and he’s just got a beeper. It’s just there’s too many things ranging from stuff like that. My personal feeling is that she did know; I don’t know to what extent, but she was obviously in a deep, deep state of denial. And I think to acknowledge it or to ask the questions even means she would have had to bear some of the responsibility. She liked her life; she liked nice things and how she was living. It’s interesting how you hear a lot of actresses talking about strong roles for women, and I actually think sometimes playing weaker people can be just as interesting and challenging.

DC: I thought there was a strength you endowed her with. It was there.

WR: Thank you. I think... what I mean is that I didn’t see her as a victim. I didn’t see her as necessarily a co-conspirator. I don’t think that she knew that he was doing some of the things... so I don’t think she knew to that extent. I don’t think she was a victim. The thing she says to her kids about God. It’s a terrible thing to say. Obviously, it’s Michael’s film, so in the scenes that I had, I tried to infuse it with a little bit more complexity. I did see the movie just recently in L.A. and I do realize that it does play... you know, some people could walk away and be like, 'She didn’t know.' I think she did.

DC: Giving this woman the benefit of the doubt, how did you get into that mindset of being in denial about both him and domestic violence? It was like she was denying there was domestic violence.

WR: That’s really interesting. Or the film was sort of, too. That was a long conversation, or conversations, that I had with Ariel [Vromen] because, to me, that’s such a huge global issue, and I thought it should at least be addressed somewhat in the film. But I’m not the director and it wasn’t the story that he could tell, I think. He sort of, in a very weird way, had to make Michael the protagonist as crazy as that sounds. But to answer, I think, the first part of your question, I did this thing where I sort of mirrored her denial. I blocked out with a Sharpie everything in the script that she wouldn’t have, air quotes, “known”. I blocked that out, and I did that thing of covering my ears when I heard, on set, people talking about the shooting scenes. I sort of had to walk away and clam my hands over McKaley [Miller] and Megan [Sherrill], my girls, because I didn’t want them to hear that kind of stuff. In a weird way, I did the opposite of what I would normally do. I just sort of told myself that I was going to make this movie about this relationship, and I just didn’t let myself... I wasn’t going home and watching those interviews. That would have made me play the role very differently. I hope that answers some of what you meant.

DC: So if you were her in that situation, what would you do in real life?

WR: I would hope that I wouldn’t even get to a second date! I’m not perfect, but I would hope that I could have a little bit of a radar for a sociopathic killer who, like, ties people up and has rats eat them in a cave and films it. If he fooled me, as soon as I... I would think I’d just take off regardless of how hard it would be.

DC: You also had a very exceptional and interesting role in Black Swan. You seem to be very selective these days about what you want. Do you sometimes have to fight people? She’s too glamorous, she’s too young! Do you have to convince people, 'I can do this; give me the chance to play these exceptional roles'?

Well, I’ve been so fortunate and lucky with the opportunities that I’ve had. Like with Black Swan, I’m a huge fan of Natalie [Portman]. To me, and I know this sounds like a line, but it’s not the size of the part. Oftentimes, it doesn’t matter the size. To me, that was a great way to support Natalie and I always had this sort of obsession with Margo Channing (All About Eve) and put a little bit of that into it. I would say I guess I’m selective. Honestly, I feel like I’m at an age where I just really like my life and it has to be something special to wanna make me leave my life and work. Because I think as you get older, to crank out movies, suddenly a year goes by, and it’s a whole year of your life. If you’re going to work, have them be interesting, cool experiences; and if that’s not available, then you’re better off doing the stuff you’re more interested in doing.

The Iceman is playing now in select theatres.

Synopsis:
The Iceman is the true story of Richard Kuklinski: loving husband, devoted father, ruthless killer. He is believed to have killed more than 250 people between 1954 and 1985.

More Details on Hannibal Episode 1.09 - Trou Normand - With Guest Star Lance HenriksenWhen it was announced last January that Lance Henriksen would be guest starring in an episode of "Hannibal," his part was "top secret," and even now that a synopsis for the ep (#1.09) has been released, we still don't know much about it. But at least we learned what a "Trou Normand" is!

Before we get into the storyline that was revealed, let us share our newly acquired culinary knowledge courtesy of about.com in an article about traditional French palate cleansers:

In Normandy locals rely on apple brandy as a digestive. Le trou Normand, or the Norman break, is a fiery shot of Calvados right in the middle of the meal. It hits hard and fast, yet is inexplicably effective as a palate cleanser and appetite stimulant. It’s yet to be determined whether it has as successful an astringent property on one’s palate as it does one’s wits – but either way, it does work.

"Hannibal" airs Thursday nights at 10pm on NBC. For more info visit "Hannibal" on NBC.com, "like""Hannibal" on Facebook, and follow "Hannibal" on Twitter.

Exclusive: Attila Juhasz Talks Zombie Squash, Working With George A. Romero, and Much More

Exclusive: Attila Juhasz Talks Zombie Squash, Working With George A. Romero, and Much MoreZombie Squash is now available for free on iOS devices and stars the legendary George A. Romero as Dr. B.E. Vil, an evil scientist with plans to take over the world with some rowdy undead veggies!

We recently chatted with the game’s creator, Attila Juhasz, about bringing this undead project to life. Read on to learn more.

AMANDA DYAR: Tell us a little about yourself and ACW Games/Attila's Creative Works LLC.

ATTILA JUHASZ:I'm creatively obsessed. (chuckles) I love to create and am most happy when I write, design, program, produce or compose. Having a jack-of-all-trades personality lead me to start ACW Games, a division of Attila's Creative Works LLC, which I formed in 2005. All my passions culminate in the creation of a game.

I'm also a big fan of quality, fantastical horror movies. George Romero's Dawn of the Dead is still my favorite genre film of all time. In 1995 I launched what many consider to be the first commercial horror website, horrormovies.com, which I sold in 1998 to a publicly traded entertainment company and took the role of Director of Internet Marketing, where I produced the world's first Internet Séance. I also wrote for a few leading horror magazines.

AMANDA: How did Zombie Squash get started and what were the main inspirations for it?

ATTILA: Two years ago I was obsessed with trying to come up with an idea for a game that could conceptually have tremendous commercial appeal, entertain all ages, and be fun for someone with interests like I do. I also wanted to do something different with zombies. Like a flash, the name hit me out of nowhere, Zombie Squash. But then I needed an angle that would separate me from the thousands of zombie games on the market already, be okay for kids but make a guy like me happy. Minutes later squash went from a verb to a noun. That was my twist, make actual squash and vegetation become the zombies. I was so excited about the idea that I started singing in jingle style "zombie squash" and thus the theme song was instantly born as well. The name, game concept and theme song all happened in a snowball of events afternoon. In six months I created a crude beta PC demo on my own and released it on the web. The feedback was tremendous and it attracted some great talent including music producer Roy Z. and George A. Romero, the godfather of all zombies.

Zombie Squash

AMANDA: How did George A. Romero get involved on the project, and tell us a little about his character, Dr. Beau E. Vil.

ATTILA: I wanted to bring in a well-known name to the game and to me, no name in the zombie world is more important or iconic than George A. Romero. He read my Zombie Squash game document and character voice-over script, loved it and was on board. George came up with the character's over-the-top accent and had a lot of fun recording it. The entire session was filmed. A few clips are in the Zombie Squash trailer.

In the game he plays Beauregard Edgar Vilamure III, better known as Dr. B.E. Vil, a billionaire, mad scientist and owner of Monsterno Corporation, a controversial bio-chemical genetics company. We all know that George Romero sculpted the modern human zombie when he made Night of the Living Dead. Now he plays a mad scientist that creates a new breed of zombies that grow in gardens so he can take over the world.

AMANDA: Why did you choose undead squash and a rabbit named Jack Stompingtail for the main characters of the game?

ATTILA:It goes back to my day of inspiration. I had come up with the title, Zombie Squash, and while trying to come up with a twist for the game, I simply changed squash from a verb to a noun. When I was a little kid, I got a big thrill out of the film The Day of the Triffids and always loved the concept of living, mobile, killer vegetation, so I guess there's a little indirect homage to that. I wanted a non-human hero, and since the Zombie Squash settings are primarily vegetable gardens, I felt that rabbits would fit the story naturally.

Jack Stompingtail was a character that evolved. I like many hero characters with the name "Jack" from Jack the Giant Killer to Jack Burton from Big Trouble in Little China, plus I originally sketched the character as a jackrabbit. I wanted his last name to be a little assertive that could complement the action of squashing so I came up with stomping. Since he's a rabbit I added the suffix "tail," and we have Jack Stompingtail.

AMANDA: Why do you think horror fans should check out Zombie Squash?

ATTILA: Because George A. Romero is in the game. (chuckles) There are classic horror elements including great music, a mad scientist and monsters. I believe with Zombie Squash we created a game that is intense and fun for young and old. It's a game that horror fans can use to comfortably introduce George A. Romero to a young audience. Most importantly, horror fans should check out Zombie Squash because it is a lighthearted spooky genre game that was produced totally independently like many of our horror film favorites.

AMANDA: What was the creative process like for bringing a game like Zombie Squash to life?

ATTILA: Let's just say, 2,000 plus hours later, I'm doing this interview with you. It's been a thrill and is one of the best projects I was ever involved in. It started out with a pen and paper. I sketched out the basic concepts of the levels, and as the excitement grew from the sketches, I started building a Zombie Squash beta demo on my own. Once that was done, my vision for the game grew and so did the Zombie Squash team with George Romero, music producer Roy Z and artist Marc Sasso, who illustrated the poster and designed the look of Dr. B.E. Vil. The creative process is evolutionary so you must have patience when obstacles spring up because they are inevitable. Setbacks are a starting point for refinement or reinvention. You regroup, get excited and keep moving forward. That's all part of the creative process, and now we have a fun game called Zombie Squash.

AMANDA: What do you hope fans take away from it, and will there be a sequel?

ATTILA:Hopefully fans have a good time playing it and will want more because there will absolutely be a follow-up. We're deep into it and later this year we will release an extended version, probably in September, but the official date hasn't been determined yet. There will be more than double the amount of levels, more mini-games, more music and yes, even more George A. Romero. The origin of the Zombie Squash is only hinted in the current release, but the full story will be in the follow-up. There are a few fun "living dead" references sprinkled in the game that hard-core Romero fans may pick up on, but there will be even more in the extended version.

AMANDA: Do you have any other projects coming up or anything else you would like to mention?

ATTILA: I recently released an app called "Horror Movies & Trivia" for the iPad and Android devices. It's a puzzle trivia game and app that streams free public domain horror movies. It's made for people who love classic horror movies and who may be familiar with names ranging from Roger Corman to Ed Wood. It's free, and links can be found at HorrorEntertainment.com.

I'd like to finish by asking my fellow horror fans to please help out Zombie Squash, which is a truly independent venture, by stopping by ZombieSquash.com and downloading the free game. We'd love to hear from all of you on our Facebook page, too. Thank you very much.

B-Sides: My Science Project Requires TubesA 1985 sci-fi comedy about a high school gearhead (Christine's John Stockwell) who passes off a crashed UFO engine he found in a junkyard as his science project, triggering an uncontrollable time warp in the school. My Science Project is as Eighties as Eighties gets, even more so its theme song by The Tubes.

The Tubes truly were the perfect band to perform the theme song to a film such as My Science Project given how frequently their music and live shows featured allusions to both mainstream and b-movies alike. They did a song titled “Attack of the 50-Foot Woman,” after all.

As for “My Science Project” the song, the closing credits of the film of the name looks to be the only place you’ll ever hear it, and even then the tune gets periodically interrupted for some outtakes and deleted scenes involving Fisher Stevens’ comic relief sidekick being, which, to be honest, I always found more obnoxious than funny.

The flick was written and directed by Jonathan R. Betuel, who went on to produce, and direct a few episodes of, "Freddy's Nightmares."

From the Press Release
Expanding the slate of films in its worldwide sales operation, 108 Media has acquired the terrifying feature JUG FACE, it was announced by 108 CEO Abhi Rastogi. Based on the Slamdance Grand Prize winning screenplay by Chad Crawford Kinkle, foreign sales will commence at Cannes this month.

Written and directed by Kinkle, JUG FACE thrilled audiences and critics at its Slamdance premiere in January with its dark story of a demonic power worshiped by an isolated rural community. The monster offers health and protection in exchange for human sacrifices, identified when their faces materialize on ceramic jugs fabricated by an entranced potter. Bloody chaos ensues when the newest victim is hidden from the monster. The ensemble cast features Sean Young (Blade Runner), Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter), Lauren Ashley Carter (The Woman, Premium Rush), Daniel Manche (The Girl Next Door), and Sean Bridgers (The Woman, Sweet Home Alabama).

The film was produced by Andrew van den Houten and Robert Tonino for Modernciné, with Lucky McKee, Arrien Schiltkamp, and Loren Semmens serving as executive producers. The deal was negotiated by Rastogi and van den Houten.

“Chad Kinkle has created a masterfully creepy film with JUG FACE,” said Rastogi. “I’m looking forward to introducing his talent and this film to the world, and we’ve already started to receive strong interest from multiple buyers in territories spanning the globe.”

“Working with a company that only takes select films to the foreign market each year allows for each film to have a unique campaign in finding the right home,” said van den Houten. “Modernciné has always enjoyed being represented by the passion and enthusiasm that people like Mr. Rastogi and his team exude. We look forward to this new collaboration and are confident no stone outside the U.S. market will be left unturned.”

Luke Evans Preparing to Take Flight as The Crow

Luke Evans Preparing to Take Flight as The CrowSorry, Loki. Tom Hiddleston’s name had most recently been bandied about to star in the reboot of The Crow. Instead the distributors decided to go with a Greek god, “Zeus” from Immortals, AKA Luke Evans, to bring the undead revenger back to the big screen.

Deadline reports that the super busy Luke Evans has been tapped by Relativity Media to star in Javier Gutierrez’s reboot of the comic book superhero The Crow. Evans is so busy of late, he was the first choice for the role, but the producers didn’t think he’d be available due to the multitude of other projects he’s heavy into. The Welsh actor will soon be seen as the lead villain in Fast and Furious 6, and later this year he’ll be co-starring in the next installment of The Hobbit. He also just signed on to star as the world’s most famous bloodsucker in Dracula: Year Zero.

Somewhere in between shooting and promoting all those films, he’s going to find time to don white makeup and black leather-wear to star as the latest incarnation of James O’Barr’s supernatural vigilante. A role first brought to the big screen in 1994 by the late Brandon Lee, it has since been brought to life by the likes of Vincent Perez, Eric Mabius, Marc Dacascos, and, most recently in 2005, Edward Furlong.

Shooting of The Crow is set to begin early next year.

For those that don’t want to wait so long to see Luke Evans wreaking violent retribution upon those that wronged him, next week he’ll begin seeking bloody vengeance in Ryuhei Kitamura’s No One Lives.

Synopsis
During a sex, drugs, and rock-fueled party, six small-town teenagers find an old vintage record and decide to play it backwards in order to listen for any subliminal/satanic messages. Lo and behold, a seemingly malevolent spirit quickly infiltrates the group, wreaking havoc as it moves from one body to another. Eventually, however, it's revealed that the spirit in question is actually trying to convey a message....and that the real source of horror isn't particularly paranormal, but rather something (or someone) much closer to home.

The Man of Steel's Michael Shannon Gets Scary in The Iceman

The Man of Steel's Michael Shannon Gets Scary in The IcemanDressed sharply in a tight-fitting purple three-piece suit, Michael Shannon isn’t as intimidating as you might think. Based on his acting work and the level of intensity he brings, you expect to meet a brooding artist, but Shannon is actually quite shy, unintentionally funny, and full of wonder.

To his surprise, he has become one of the most revered actors working today. Before he plays the iconic Kryptonian super-villain Zod in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, Shannon takes on the role of New Jersey’s most notorious contract killer Richard Kuklinski in the ‘70s crime drama The Iceman (review here) from director Ariel Vromen.

DC: Let’s start at the beginning: Why this film, and had you been knowledgeable about The Iceman before?

MS: No, I didn’t know who Kuklinski was; I’d never heard of him. Ariel [Vromen] was an acquaintance of mine and he gave me the script, and once I read it and said I was curious about the project, he recommended that I watch some of the interview that you can find on YouTube. You can find little pieces of it. Yeah, when I saw [Kuklinski] being interviewed, I thought he was a very fascinating person and it’d be a great challenge to try and play the part.

DC: Are you one of those people who dreads the words “based on a true story” or one who becomes more interested?

MS: I think it raises the level of difficulty a little bit. I mean, if it’s just left to your imagination, it feels, for me anyway, harder to fail because how can you judge my imagination? It’s my imagination. But this is something that actually happened. But what’s even doubly more difficult about it is that it’s based on a true story but no one knows what the true story is. The true story has never really been told, even by the person who it happened to. So that’s what makes it even more fascinating. It’s a combination of docudrama and pure imagination. It’s like a detective story.

DC: Did it bother you playing this role? I know you only filmed for thirty days, but during that time period did you kind of take it home a little bit?

MS: Well, I did a great thing. The house I was staying in, they had these... they’re like the old fashioned video games from the Eighties, but it’ll be one game that has every game from the Eighties on it. It’s got Pac-Man, Galaga, BurgerTime, Missile Command, it’s got like forty different games. So I would shoot this movie all day and then I’d go home and play video games. Arkanoid, Space Invaders... until I was standing there falling asleep and then I would go to bed.

DC: Do you think you’d ever do a movie based on a video game?

MS: I’d definitely do a Space Invaders movie. I’d like to move right to left like that, just all day long, that’s your job. Just standing there with your gun.

DC: How did you and Winona create the chemistry you had onscreen?

MS: That’s always such a mysterious question. When I did Take Shelter with Jessica [Chastain], it’s like, you show up, you’re complete and total strangers, and then the next day you’re married. I think you just go on instinct; I mean you really don’t have much else to go on. You have to make each other feel comfortable and say, 'Look, whatever you want to do is fine by me.' I think that’s the biggest thing with any people acting together is that you’re worried the other person is going to judge you or not like what you’re doing or think you’re letting them down. But Winona, I was nervous to act with Winona Ryder. I mean, she’s Winona Ryder; she’s one of the biggest movie stars of the last twenty years, and I’ve seen her in countless films. Honestly, it blew my mind that she was playing the part. What’s so amazing is when she shows up, she’s so little and fragile and you just immediately want to protect her or take care of her. It’s not like she can’t take care of herself, she’s a very strong person, obviously. My initial instinct was, 'I’ve gotta make sure she’s okay.' Also, she came halfway through the shooting of the movie. We shot all the crime stuff first. We did the Demeo stuff and then the Mr. Freezy stuff so she was kind of new and everyone else already knew each other, and that can be very awkward when you show up and everyone already has a relationship.

DC: Wasn’t he so successful because he needed that facade and she was so good at keeping up that facade?

MS: Exactly. I think if he never found her and didn’t get married, he would have been in jail a lot sooner. She also gave him something to live for. The first time you see him kill somebody in the movie, it’s not even a hit. It’s some dude that pisses him off over Deborah, so you can see how strong... When he finds her, he knows that she is everything to him, that without her... he said this in the interview. She was the only woman [Kuklinski] felt that way about. In a way, as creepy as this whole thing is, it’s kind of romantic.

DC: What you do well with the character is going from zero to sixty with your emotions; you do that with Kuklinski very well. And you also do it really well with that sorority reading of the letter.

MS: Oh, thank you.

DC: Absolutely hilarious. Where do you have to go to get that intensity and bring that kind of performance to the screen?

MS: Well, ultimately you just have to be very thoughtless about it. A lot of times what’ll hang you up when you’re trying to act is your brain. You start thinking, ‘Oh, this isn’t right. I shouldn’t move my hand that way; that’s gonna look stupid.’ And that’s all your brain. You do this long enough and you realize that your brain is your worst enemy when you’re trying to act. So you just have to... you just don’t think about it. I try to literally just be as empty in my head as possible except for paying attention to what’s going on around me. People always think, ‘Oh, I have to write my character’s diary and know what he had for lunch when he was three years old.’ That’s all just intellectual hoo-ha. It’s what’s surrounding you and what other people are doing, and if you’re really paying attention to that, then you can react, and that’s where it comes from.

DC: Could you talk a little bit about your next movie, Man of Steel? We’re all really excited for it.

MS: Well, Superman is about a man that can fly and he’s very strong. And he can shoot laser beams out of his eyes. And that’s about all I can say about it.

The Iceman is playing now in select theatres.

Synopsis:
The Iceman is the true story of Richard Kuklinski: loving husband, devoted father, ruthless killer. He is believed to have killed more than 250 people between 1954 and 1985.

Exclusive: Jimmy Palmiotti Discusses Injustice: Gods Among Us, The New Batwing, and Why Superheroes Are So Popular

Exclusive: Jimmy Palmiotti Discusses Injustice: Gods Among Us, The New Batwing and Why Superheroes Are So PopularInjustice: Gods Among Us is now available with new DLC arriving on May 7. We recently discussed with writer Jimmy Palmiotti the game’s dark storyline and the rising popularity of superheroes in media.

AMANDA DYAR: You have worked on several amazing projects which include Jonah Hex, Daredevil, Deadpool, and Ghost Rider to name a few. How did you get started in comics, and what are you most proud of today?

JIMMY PALMIOTTI:I went to the High School of Art & Design in NYC and then after eight years in advertising decided I wanted to change my path and went back to my first love--comic books. I started doing backgrounds for a buddy, Mark Texeria, while drawing and inking some black and white indie books. Eventually I got some decent jobs at Marvel Comics and a few years later met and teamed up to self-publish with Joe Quesada and created EVeNT COMICS. We published a few titles, including Ash, Painkiller Jane, Kid Death, and so on. After that we were hired to create and run Marvel Knights for Marvel Comics. That went on a few years, and all the while I was slowly switching over to writing. I have been doing that, publishing, and editing ever since.

I guess what I am most proud of are the creator-owned titles I have created and co- created along the way. That and my long run on Jonah Hex with my writing partner and friend Justin Gray. The creator-owned titles have given me a second career in screenwriting, video games, TV, and film that I never would have had if I only worked for DC and Marvel Comics.

AMANDA: What are some of your influences or inspirations? And what does your creative process entail when bringing the idea to the page?

JIMMY:The world around me is my inspiration, the amazing work of others, and a constant flow of entertainment that I indulge in. My parents did a great job supporting me, and my girl, Amanda Conner, has me believing I can do just about anything I set my mind to. My creative process is a simple one…find an idea I like and develop it, talk it out, twist and turn it, and when ready, get down to business to make it happen. Comics are easy in this respect because all you need is a couple of talented people to run with a project.

AMANDA: The Batwing #19 comic released last month with big changes. Tell us about what we can expect from Batwing and his new high-tech look.

JIMMY:There is a new BATWING in town named Luke Fox, and he is the son of Lucius Fox, Bruce Wayne's business manager and creator of all those cool bat toys. Justin and I are having a blast creating not only a new suit and character, but throwing him into the bat books in what we think is a unique position. This is a character that is directly tied to Bruce Wayne's life, and we are going to take advantage of it in every way. The first year plans are to develop the core character so a reader can relate and care about him. Issue 20 we dig right in and run from there. We plan on taking the character over the top and integrating the character into all the other bat books. As far as the high-tech look, his father developed the suit, and we are going to have Luke refining it as the story develops. He has a lot in common with his father that way.

AMANDA: The Injustice: Gods Among Us video game also released in April and received tons of praise from critics and gamers alike. Tell us how you got involved with developing the original storyline for the game and what challenges you faced.

JIMMY:Justin and I got the call from Ames Kirshen at Warner Brothers to see if we were interested in consulting on the project. We have worked with NetherRealm before on the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe game a few years before, and it was a great experience. We heard the idea of the game and were all in. Ed Boon and his crew already had a story outline pretty well worked out so we just had to go in and make sure it would all work with the characters they picked and make sure the story would work on a number of levels. We had a few meetings, offered some changes and other suggestions, and went from there. Overall the experience was a great one because everyone had so much passion going into this project.

AMANDA: Some of DC's characters were originally played around with in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. What successes were taken from this and applied to Injustice?

That’s more of a question for the crew at NetherRealm. What I do know is that Ed [Boon, Creative Director] wanted his crew to push the characters harder and focus the moves more on each character's unique superpowers--which you see right away when you play the game. When working on a couple of projects like this, you are always tying to outdo your last project, and they did an amazing job doing just that.

Injustice: Gods Among Us

AMANDA:Injustice has a very interesting storyline with Superman going crazy, taking over the world, and becoming one of the bad guys. What were some of the main reasons for taking the story in this new, darker direction?

JIMMY:The direction was also an interesting way to set up the idea that you can become a hero and battle another hero as well as a bad guy. The game is story-driven all the way, and to do something light and silly would not have been very “on character” with the characters picked for the gameplay. I think it's a bit dark, and, even more than that, a lot of fun and madness.

AMANDA: Movies/games based on comics and superheroes are becoming more and more popular in today's culture. Why do you think this is?

JIMMY:It is because all those 30- to 40-year-olds running companies now grew up with reading comics and are in a position to make these characters that were part of their younger lives become mainstream properties. People have always loved superheroes, but now it has become a whole new genre of film and TV, and I couldn't be happier. I think the people creating the material finally took it more serious and started writing them for adults to gain a bigger audience. Bottom line is there is an audience willing to pay, and that is what drives most media.

AMANDA: What direction do you see fighting games taking in the future?

JIMMY:Becoming more and more creative with the mechanics of the fight and also having more of a story to drive the player deeper and deeper into the world created. The only limit is the imagination at this point. World building is the key.

AMANDA: Do you have any other projects that you are currently working on that you would like to mention?

JIMMY:There is always All-Star Western and Batwing at DC Comics, What if Avengers vs. X-Men at Marvel, and our new Kickstarter happening next week called Weapon of God, which is about the Pope's assassin. Outside of comics, New West is in development at New Regency films, and you will be hearing news about Painkiller Jane any day now.
