Vertical Entertainment Takes the Scenic RouteAfter a very successful run at this year's South by Southwest Film Festival, Kevin and Michael Goetz's Scenic Route, starring Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler, has landed itself some distribution. Read on for details.

    From the Press Release
Vertical Entertainment has acquired all U.S. rights to the thriller SCENIC ROUTE, starring Josh Duhamel (Safe Haven, Transformers 1, 2, and 3) and Dan Fogler (Balls of Fury and Kung Fu Panda) at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival. The film marks Kevin and Michael Goetz's directorial debut from a screenplay by Kyle Killen (The Beaver). SCENIC ROUTE first premiered at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival to strong reviews and will be released theatrically in August 2013. Vertical Entertainment’s Rich Goldberg announced the deal today.

“Josh Duhamel has over one billion dollars in box office to his name, yet somehow finds a role in SCENIC ROUTE, unlike any other he’s had before” said Goldberg. "He truly has brought himself to another level, and paired with the wonderful Dan Fogler, we felt the success of the film couldn’t be questioned in the independent market. We plan on utilizing every platform possible, from theatrical, digital and VOD, physical, as well as all other ancillary markets, to get this film to as broad an audience as possible.”

“Given the ever-changing landscape of domestic distribution, Vertical’s experience, spirited initiative, and resourcefulness simply places SCENIC ROUTE in the best position to find its audience and prosper,” said producer Brion Hambel. “Rich and his team leave no stone unturned…and in a time of slimmer margins, this is paramount to the overall success of an independent film.”

SCENIC ROUTE was produced by Brion Hambel and Paul Jensen of Best Medicine Productions (Natural Selection), Anonymous Content’s Luke Rivett (Something Real and Good), and Scott Freeman and executive produced by Duhamel, Keith Redmon (Rendition, The Beaver), and Paul Green (Fun Size, The Beaver).

The deal was negotiated by Peter Jarowey on behalf of Vertical Entertainment and Matthew Sugarman of Weintraub Tobin on behalf of the filmmakers. Premiere Entertainment is handling international sales during the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival.

    Synopsis
Mitchell (Josh Duhamel) and Carter (Dan Fogler), life-long friends who have drifted apart, are on a road trip when their old pickup breaks down, leaving them stranded on an isolated desert road. Nobody can pick apart a man like his best friend, and as the relentless elements of the desert grind them down, they start to attack each other’s life decisions with unwavering brutality. As they question who they are and who they could have been, their agitation leads to physical confrontation and ultimately knife-wielding madness, and what begins as an inconvenience becomes a very real life or death struggle.

Family is power. The Original Vampire family swore it to each other a thousand years ago. They pledged to remain together, always and forever. Now, centuries have passed, and the bonds of family are broken. Time, tragedy and hunger for power have torn the Original Family apart. When Klaus Mikaelson, the original vampire-werewolf hybrid, receives a mysterious tip that a plot is brewing against him in the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans, he returns to the city his family helped build. For Klaus, the thought of answering to his powerful protégé is unthinkable, and he vows to reclaim what was once his – the power, the city and his family. Teen Wolf Season 3 Promos/Sneak Peeks, Behind-the-Scenes Videos, and Teasers from Creator Jeff DavisWith Season 3 of "Teen Wolf" set to debut on MTV Monday, June 3rd, we've gotten hold of some previews and behind-the-scenes videos along with a few teasers from series creator Jeff Davis straight from the set.

Davis actually gave the MTV Remote Control Blog 25 hints of what's coming, and we have the highlights below. For the full list be sure to hit the link at the bottom of the page.

    Synopsis:
MTV's hit scripted series "Teen Wolf" is set to debut the first half of its supersized 24-episode third season on Monday, June 3, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. Season 3 will pick up four months after the events that nearly ended Jackson's life and resurrected Peter Hale (Ian Bohen) with teen werewolf Scott McCall and his friends Stiles, Lydia, and Allison beginning their junior year of high school unaware that a new threat has arrived in Beacon Hills: a deadly pack of Alpha werewolves intent on bringing Derek into their fold.

Season 3 will feature the return of stars Tyler Posey as Scott McCall, Crystal Reed as Allison Argent, Dylan O'Brien as Stiles, Tyler Hoechlin as Derek Hale, and Holland Roden as Lydia Martin. There will also be several new faces in Beacon Hills, including Ethan and Aiden, twin Alpha werewolves played by Charlie and Max Carver; Gideon Emery as Deucalion, leader of the Alpha werewolves; Kali, an Alpha werewolf played by Felisha Terrell; and Cora, a tough 17-year-old who has ties to the Beacon Hills werewolf line, played by Adelaide Kane.

Now here are a few teasers:

  • Stiles might have a falling out with Scott -- Davis says Isaac (Daniel Sharman) will move in on Stiles' territory as Scott's go-to pal. Is this the end of a classic bromance?
  • New Alphas Ethan and Aiden have their sights set on Scott's friends -- Davis said the new duo isn't necessarily out to harm Scott's inner-circle, but they've definitely got some business to take care of.
  • Allison Argent has gone rogue -- Scott's ex-girlfriend has been off the grid for months, and when she finally returns to Beacon Hills, she'll be a near-stranger. Has she completely committed to hunting? Well, when it comes to bloodshed...
  • Everyone's going to die, basically -- Season 3's body count will be greater than the previous two combined, according to Davis.
  • There's been a REAL WOLF on set (you can meet Shadow in one of the videos below).
  • Derek and Scott will fight side by side -- The two top dogs have had a contentious relationship in the past, but they'll come together in Episodes 2 and 3 and might even need backup to handle their opposition.
  • Season 3's music will feature the moans of an obedient dog -- Composer Dino Meneghin is experimenting with the sound this season, which will also feature a chanting choir.
  • We'll finally learn about Derek's past -- Ian Nelson will play the part of a younger, happier Hale; Alicia Coppola will play Derek's mom, Talia; and Derek's sister, Laura, will be played by Ana Walczak.
  • Don't forget those mysterious jars (in Episode 3.09 grimy antiques will make some waves) while the mysterious symbols scribbled around town will continue to give us anxiety.

Enjoy Today with These First Images from The Tomorrow PeopleThe fact that The CW's new series "The Tomorrow People" is providing a regular home for the wonderful Mark Pellegrino is reason enough to give it a shot, but it will also be interesting to see if lightning can strike twice for the Amell family - on the same night.

Check out the first stills and a promo photo, and look for a premiere date announcement soon.

    Series Synopsis:
They are the next evolutionary leap of mankind, a generation of humans born with paranormal abilities — the Tomorrow People. Stephen Jameson stands at the crossroads between the world we know and the shifting world of the future. Up until a year ago, Stephen was a “normal” teenager — until he began hearing voices and teleporting in his sleep, never knowing where he might wake up. Now, Stephen’s issues have gone far beyond the usual teenage angst, and he is beginning to question his sanity. In desperation, Stephen decides to listen to one of the voices in his head, and it leads him to his first encounter with the Tomorrow People — John, Cara, and Russell — a genetically advanced race with the abilities of telekinesis, teleportation, and telepathic communication.

The Tomorrow People are being hunted down by a paramilitary group of scientists known as Ultra. Led by Dr. Jedikiah Price, Ultra sees the Tomorrow People as a very real existential threat from a rival species, and the outcast group has been forced to hide out in an abandoned subway station just beneath the surface of the human world. Trading in secrets, Jedikiah offers Stephen the chance for a normal life with his family and best friend, Astrid, if he will help in the struggle to isolate and eradicate the Tomorrow People. On the other hand, Cara, John and Russell offer Stephen a different type of family and a home where he truly belongs. Unwilling to turn his back on humanity or the world of the Tomorrow People, Stephen sets out on his own path — a journey that could take him into the shadowy past to uncover the truth about his father’s mysterious disappearance or into an unknown future with THE TOMORROW PEOPLE.

The series stars Robbie Amell (“Revenge”) as Stephen, Luke Mitchell (“H20: Just Add Water”) as John, Peyton List (“Mad Men”) as Cara, Aaron Yoo (Disturbia, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) as Russell, Mark Pellegrino (“Lost,” “Supernatural”) as Dr. Jedikiah Price, and Madeleine Mantock (All You Need is Kill) as Astrid. "THE TOMORROW PEOPLE" is from Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” Green Lantern), Julie Plec (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Kyle XY”), Phil Klemmer (“Political Animals,” “Chuck”), and Danny Cannon (“Nikita,” “CSI: NY”). The pilot was directed by Danny Cannon.

The CW will be pairing "The Tomorrow People" with "Arrow" (which stars Robbie's cousin Stephen) on Wednesday nights, 9PM and 8PM, respectively. For more info visit "The Tomorrow People" on CWTV.com, "like""The Tomorrow People" on Facebook, and follow "The Tomorrow People" on Twitter.

B-Sides: The Moon Beast Tracks a California Lady

B-Sides: The Moon Beast Tracks a California LadyThis week’s B-Sides is for all of you 1970’s folk rock fans. The song actually isn’t too bad, to be honest, but you’re probably not familiar with it because the film it stems from is one of the all-time worst.

A New Mexico mineralogist gets conked on the head by a falling moon rock during a meteor storm and now turns into a reptilian monster whenever the moon is full. Track of the Moon Beast should have been so much more fun than the snoozefest it actually turned out to be. Watching it, you’ll fully understand why the film, which was shot in 1972, wasn’t able to find distribution for four years.

One of the highlights - or lowlights - of Track of the Moon Beast, depending on your tolerance for poor man’s Crosby, Stills, & Nash folk rock, is a brief musical interlude in which crooner Frank Larrabee takes the stage to perform “California Lady.”

    My voice been getting froggy
I been smoking too damn much
Singing songs to the sun that's rising
    Rhyming words I cannot touch
Oh, I been wandering in circles
With just a guitar in my hand
Playing one too many barrooms and drinkin' more than I can stand

California lady, won't you bring your love to me
California lady, she's the one I want to see
    My California lady

With lyrics like that there’s nothing left to say but light up a doobie and set your earlobes to mellow.

Snowfort Pictures and MPI/Dark Sky Films Want to Give You Starry Eyes

Snowfort Pictures and MPI/Dark Sky Films Want to Give You Starry EyesWe first heard about Starry Eyes in March when it added The Innkeepers' Pat Healy to the cast, and it looks like the flick is on the fast-track as word from Cannes today is that production is as of now under way on the Hollywood-set occult tale. Here are more details and the first still.

    From the Press Release:
Elevated genre production company Snowfort Pictures and MPI's Dark Sky Films, the preeminent independent producer-distributor of high quality genre films, announced today that production is under way on co-writers/directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch's Hollywood set occult tale STARRY EYES. Snowfort Pictures is producing, while MPI will handle international sales at the 2013 Cannes Marche du Film.

Starring ingénue Alex Essoe, the horror story is described as a contemporary take on movies such as Rosemary's Baby. The cast is rounded out by Amanda Fuller (Cheap Thrills, "Last Man Standing" - ABC Television), Fabianne Therese (The Aggression Scale, John Dies at the End), Pat Healy (Cheap Thrills, Compliance, The Innkeepers), Shane Coffey ("Pretty Little Liars" - ABC Television), Marc Senter (Brawler, Red White & Blue), Nick Simmons, and Noah Segan (Looper, Deadgirl).

The screenplay penned by Widmyer and Kolsch was developed with the help of Snowfort's Founder/CEO Travis Stevens, who is producing the film. The writing/directing team previously worked together on Postcards from the Edge: The Chuck Palahniuk Documentary and the horror film Absence. The film is being executive produced by John Jarzemensky, Aaron Koontz, Giles Daoust, and Gena Wilbur.

Snowfort Pictures and MPI/Dark Sky Films Want to Give You Starry Eyes

Widmyer and Kolsch looked to the past for inspiration: "Starry Eyes utilizes the same approach genre films from the 1970's used, where the horror stems from the character and what they are going through and where the horror represents the internal working of a character."

Stevens adds: "We're setting out to make a scary film for sure,-and Starry Eyes is as unsettling a film as you can get. But this is also a film about a generation who feel entitled to fame and an industry that feeds off that desire. And our hope is that the audience will be just as frightened by that dynamic as they are by the stunning special FX make-up."

MPI'S Dark Sky Films brand includes the successful genre films The House of the Devil, Stake Land, The Innkeepers, Frankenstein's Army, Hatchet III, and Stitches. Snowfort Pictures has had a busy year, with two films premiering at SXSW (Big Ass Spider! and the Audience Award Winner Cheap Thrills, both screening at the Marche du Film) and Jodorowsky's Dune that premieres in Cannes as part of the Director's Fortnight program.

    Look for lots more soon!

Fruit Chan Delivers Horror in The Midnight AfterSomewhere deep inside of us there's a spot that still hasn't forgiven director Fruit Chan for what he did to our psyche with his disturbing flick Dumplings (we can still hear that crunching). Will his next flick have the same effect?

Screen Daily reports that Hong Kong’s Golden Scene is producing Chan’s (pictured) first Hong Kong-set feature in almost a decade, sci-fi thriller The Midnight After, based on bestselling novel Lost on a Minibus by Mongkok To Tai Po.

Chan plans to start shooting in June with an ensemble cast including regulars from his previous films like Wong You Nam (Hollywood Hong Kong), Chui Tien You (Little Cheung) and Sam Lee (Made In Hong Kong). The cast also includes Hong Kong stars Simon Yam, Lam Suet, Janice Man, Kara Hui and Vincci Cheuk.

The story follows a group of passengers on a minibus who emerge from a tunnel to discover that every single person has disappeared from Hong Kong. Then the remaining passengers start to go missing one by one.

Alexandre Aja Finds Terror In A Perfect WorldLet's face it... we live in a far from perfect world, but thankfully there are a handful of quality filmmakers out there who make movies that get us through the rough patches in the most memorable, gruesome, and fun ways. Alexandre Aja fits that description perfectly.

Screen Daily reports that French producer Charles Gillibert and Aja (pictured) have jointly acquired adaptation rights to American writer Laura Kasischke’s bestseller In a Perfect World.

In A Perfect World revolves around newly-married former flight attendant Jiselle, who is surviving life as a new stepmother to three children. Their lives are altered forever when a deadly flu epidemic breaks out.

In a Perfect World is a suspense novel that holds all the emotional layers of a rich family drama, a world where terror, beauty and chaos walk hand in hand. A dystopian family drama, set in an environment of doom,” the pair said in a joint announcement.

More on this one as it comes.

Barcelona-Based Ms Entertainment Announces Marc Carrete's Asmodexia at Cannes 2013

Barcelona-Based Ms Entertainment Announces Marc Carrete's Asmodexia at Cannes 2013If you're a fan of possession flicks and/or foreign horror, read on for more details coming out of Cannes 2013 regarding Emili Pons' just launched Barcelona-based low-cost genre label Ms Entertainment, which announced its first project will be Asmodexia, the feature debut of Marc Carrete.

Per Variety, Catalan Carrete's shorts — Mal cuerpo and slasher pic Castidermia (check out its trailer below) — bowed at Catalonia’s Sitges Festival in 2011 and 2012, respectively; and this new project doesn't stray far from home. The Spanish-language horror film takes place over five days in the lives of an exorcist and his granddaughter, who work in the Barcelona area.

The screenplay is by Sitges fest deputy director Mike Hostench and Carrete from the director's original idea. Asmodexia goes into production August 26th, with Hostench taking an associate producer credit. Speaking at Cannes, Hostench described Asmodexia as a more realistic exorcism movie than most, where location is incredibly important.

Pons' background is in commercials and marketing, and he and his fellow Ms shareholders will make films outside the state subsidy system by tapping private investment. They will also target new media, including VOD and subscription VOD, and the English-speaking market.

Ms joins Barcelona’s vibrant horror scene, which includes Rodar y Rodar (The Orphanage), Nostromo Pictures (Grand Piano), Roxbury (Painless), and Filmax (REC). The Ms launch comes as young Spanish directors are increasingly turning to genre and thrillers for their feature debuts. “It always happens in economic downturns: Genre saves the day. Maybe not the whole of the day, but part of it,” Hostench said.

For more info on the fest, which runs until May 26th, visit the official Festival de Cannes website.

Evil Dead - Portugal Forgoes the Need for ObituariesThe advertising industry in America has become so ridiculously homogenized it almost feels as if creativity itself has died a slow and painful death. Take the remake of Evil Dead for instance. We got your standard stuff. Elsewhere had some fun!

Bloody Disgusting pointed us towards the website 9 the Creative Shop, who recently scanned and published an ad that appeared in their newspaper's obituaries section. The kicker? Since the dead were returning to life, the areas where the names of the recently deceased would appear were left blank. Pretty nifty! Take a look!

    Evil Dead

Ghost House Pictures produced the much anticipated remake of The Evil Dead, the film that effectively launched the careers of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise, Darkman, Drag Me to Hell), Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night), and Bruce Campbell, who played the Ash character and was co-producer of the original. They are now back to produce an Evil Dead for today's audience that's high on the horror, gore, plot twists, and more from a screenplay written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues with Diablo Cody. Executive producers are J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joseph Drake, and Peter Schlessel.

Things Heat Up at Cannes for Jim Mickle's Cold in July AdaptationIt's been exactly a year since we last had an update on Jim Mickle's (Stake Land, We Are What We Are) adaptation of the Joe R. Lansdale novel Cold in July, but with Cannes in full swing, news has come that filming is set to begin in late July with an early 2014 delivery.

Per Deadline, Paris-based Backup Media has teamed up with Memento Films International to finance Cold in July. Adapted by Nick Damici and Mickle, the film is being produced by Belladonna Productions’ Rene Bastian, Adam Folk, and Linda Moran — frequent Mickle collaborators.

    Book Synopsis:
When Richard Dane shoots and kills a burglar in his living room, he sets off a strange sequence of events, starting with a threat by the thief's father to kill Richard's son and leading to a dark, horrible truth.

"It was important to us to find partners on the movie who would help us create an environment for Jim where he would be protected and be able to excel as a filmmaker," Moran and Bastian jointly said. "We are very happy to have found the full support of the Backup/MFI team."

For Backup Media this marks a growing determination to put equity into English-language films; in previous investments they provided debt. "We are very proud Cold in July is the first film for which Backup has provided one-stop film financing,"a Backup rep said. "We truly believe Belladonna/MFI/Mickle are the ideal team for us to extend our investment framework."

“We’re excited to continue our collaboration with Jim Mickle and Belladonna,” Memento's Emilie Georges said. “Cold in July represents a wonderful step for Jim as a filmmaker, and we are eager to introduce it to the world.”

Memento Films International will handle foreign sales and team up with WME Global on the domestic end, as they did on the eOne deal for Mickle’s last film, We Are What We Are.
