We see a lot of great indie horror work here at Dread Central. But every once in awhile we get a look at something that stands out, something that looks like it's got a chance to rise above and be the next micro-budget film to set the world on fire. Judging by its trailer, Delirium might be it.

We are beginning to become accustomed to the fact that, from time to time, horror films made on tiny budgets are going to go crazy at the box office. Looking back, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Halloween, The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity are all films that fall into the category of surprise runaway hits. Delirium could be next. Take a look at the amazing trailer below and see if you don't agree that the film has fantastic potential.

Currently in post-production, Delirium is looking at a release date around June of this year. Jared Black wrote and directed the film which stars Jolene Kay, Nathan Polzin, Jonathan Mandell, Taylor Pigeon and Chris Gann. Follow Delirium on Twitter (@deliriummovie), throw them a like on the Delirium Facebook page and see their brand-spanking new Delirium website. Get on board with this film now. It could be the next big thing!

A big Dread Central saaaa-lute to horror's Geraldo Rivera, Avery G, for sniffing this one out and giving us the heads up!

About Delirium
Emily has mysteriously returned home to her mother, Rachel, and stepfather, Timothy, after being missing for over a year. There are no clues as to where she has been, and after extensive medical research, no one has been able to provide any answers to the mystery of the past year. Upon Emily’s return, her biological father, Barry, has decided to launch a custody war against Rachel and Timothy, threatening to take Emily away from Rachel again.

As the days go on, strange events begin occurring in the home. Something came back with Emily. Delirium explores the story of two parents faced with the ultimate double-edged sword, through 90 minutes of heart-pounding events and situations. Rachel and Timothy are presented with the choice of keeping Emily in a dangerous home or letting her father take her.

Delirium has been received extremely well in test screenings with audience members being left in tears at the dramatic and emotional ending, which seems to last with them for days. The film has been labeled “a family horror film,” meaning it offers something for just about everyone in the family, creating a whole new category and raising the bar for entertainment. Delirium delivers twists and turns, intense situations, dramatic moments, complicated dilemmas, and of course, extremely scary and violent moments.

Raised by human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door -- until she “drained” her first boyfriend to death. Bo has since hit the road alone and afraid. She discovers she is one of the Fae, creatures of legend and folklore who pass as humans while feeding off them in secret, as they have for millennia. She is faced with choosing an allegiance between the Dark or Light Fae clans. Previews of the March 15th Episodes of The Vampire Diaries (1912) and The Secret Circle (Lucky)

Previews of the March 15th Episodes of The Vampire Diaries (1912) and The Secret Circle (Lucky)What's this? No more episodes of our favorite CW shows until mid-March? Well, to tide us over until then, we have previews of the returning episodes of "The Vampire Diaries" (Ep. 3.16, "1912") and "The Secret Circle" (Ep. 1.16, "Lucky"), both of which air on March 15th.

Starting with "TVD", "1912" introduces us to Sage (guest star Cassidy Freeman, "Smallville"), who is here with a message: Women are not just for food, they're for pleasure. In addition we'll meet Samantha Gilbert (guest star Lindsey Garrett), one of Elena's ancestors who interacts with both Salvatore brothers. From past experience, the series' flashback episodes are among our favorites so the 15th can't get here soon enough!

As for "TSC", we don't know how much sillier this show can get! It's seeming more and more like exec producer Kevin Williamson is hands off because we can't imagine him going along with some of this stuff. In any event, the theme of "Lucky" is that we all must pay for the sins of our fathers, and guest star Joe Lando is still lurking around Chance Harbor doing god only knows what. At least from the looks of things he and Natasha Henstridge have a few scenes together; it's always nice to see her pop up on the show.

Dark Was the Night Promising a New MonstrosityHere at Dread Central we're always on the lookout for a new monster movie to sate our creature cravings. Word has come our way of a new one, and we have all the details for you right here, cold off the slab!

Caliber Media Co., Sundial Pictures, and Preferred Content have started production on the talked-about thriller script Dark Was the Night with lensing taking place this coming Sunday, February 19th.

Kevin Durand (pictured right; Real Steel, Robin Hood) and Lukas Haas (Contraband, Inception) will star in and battle with a never-before-seen monster in director Jack Heller's upcoming horror feature. The script, from Tyler Hisel, appeared on the 2009 Black List of best unproduced scripts, a rarity for the monster genre, under the title The Trees.

"'Dark Was the Night' centers on the isolated town of Maiden Woods, where a nearby logging company has disrupted the balance of the life in the woods. From the frozen forest an evil will emerge and threaten the local citizens, their only hope being the local Sheriff and his trusted Deputy."

Rounding out the cast are Sabina Gadecki, Heath Freeman and Nick Damici (Stake Land).

"Respectful to the success of vampire and zombie movies, we were immediately attracted to Tyler’s all-new monster mythology," said producer Dallas Sonnier.

Texas Frightmakers: Interview with Loyd Cryer

    $

    0

I was inspired to do this series of monthly interviews while attending last year's Texas Frightmare Weekend convention. They had a series of panels called "Texas Frightmakers", and I lifted the title as it seemed like a fantastic idea. As such, it's only right to interview the founder and bossman behind the con, Loyd Cryer.

Horror fans everywhere adore conventions. The worldwide "horror family" is tight-knit, and both horror folks and horror fans are, in my opinion, the single kindest and gregarious section of fandom out there. Texas Frightmare Weekend is headed into its seventh year with a new space and a ton of amazing guests. Loyd Cryer founded the con in 2006, and it continues to grow under his charge. By adhering to a policy of "what the fans want", it continues to shine as one of the finest places for horror fans to celebrate their bloody love for the genre.

Texas Frightmakers: Interview with Loyd Cryer

Mr. Dark: Tell us how you got started with Texas Frightmare Weekend.

Loyd Cryer: We never had a horror convention in this area. So I was talking to my wife one day and stated that I thought we should start a horror convention. Why should everyone else have the fun and leave Texas out? My wife got behind me on the idea wholeheartedly and really encouraged me to go for it.

MD: This upcoming year is full of changes, including a massive new venue. Let us in on the details surrounding those changes and what we can look forward to in 2012 from TFW.

LC: The biggest thing, as you mentioned, is the venue change. The event space is three times the size of our last venue. Plus they have almost three times the hotel rooms. So we'll have room to breathe! We've outgrown four venues in six years.

Otherwise, we plan to keep things basically the same. We always strive to make the experience better for attendees, though. Through a yearly survey we ask them what they would like to see change. We'll implement a few of those changes, but the basic core of what people love about the show will stay the same.

MD: TFW struck me as very different (and, frankly, better) than many of the cons I've been to, even some of the massive cons thrown on the West Coast. In your opinion, what makes the difference between a good con and a great con?

LC: Well, thanks for saying so! That's really flattering to hear. Honestly, I haven't attended any other horror conventions other than one a few years ago. As a horror fan I simply try to present what I would like to see at a horror convention. That has always been my viewpoint: Don't worry about the competition; just do the event that I would like to attend.

Texas Frightmakers: Interview with Loyd Cryer

MD: TFW has a variety of activities for attendees unlike many cons. Hearse shows, zombie walks, red carpet events for the guests, "scaryoke"...what inspired you to diversify from the traditional guests/panels/vending routine usually found at cons, and what ideas do you have for the future?

LC: Most every event we have done has been suggested by attendees. When we get these suggestions, we run them up the flagpole and decide if they will work or not. The hearse show, zombie walk, red carpet and scaryoke were all suggestions that we ran with. We want to add even more events this year. Attendees have always asked for more parties and events in the evening after the vendor and guest rooms close so we plan to ramp that up this year. This year we're planning a "prom" that horror fans will die for.

MD: You've had some great guests over the years. Who's your dream guest that you have never been able to land? Who would you love to land in 2012 that continues to elude you?

LC: Anyone that the fans overwhelmingly request like Rob and Sheri Zombie, Kurt Russell, folks like that. We're always open to suggestions, and the more we get for a particular guest, the more we go after them.

MD: The name says it all: Texas Frightmare Weekend. Why Texas, and what makes Texas such a magnet for horror?

LC: I'm a native Texan and can't imagine doing it anywhere else. The fans here are like no other fans on the planet. The same thing goes for why Texas is a "magnet" for horror. The fans make it that way!

MD: What's your personal favorite TFW moment?

LC: Yoshihiro Nishimura and Dieter Laser at the pool. Hands down, the craziest party ever! The video speaks for itself. (Mr. Dark Note: This mash-up featuring the star of The Human Centipede and the director of Tokyo Gore Police is a must-see, but rather NSFW unless a bunch of weirdoes wearing Japanese bathing garments that display their backsides is okay with your job. That said, you have to see this. No, really. Show it to your mom, especially if she's a fan of Dieter Laser. If she isn't, show her Human Centipede. I suggest saving it for her birthday. Right after the whole family blows out the candles.)

MD: My traditional last question: What's your favorite horror movie?

    LC: The Exorcist

We'd like to thank Loyd for taking the time to speak with us and for continuing to listen to the fans to make TFW better year after year. As mentioned in the interview, TFW 2012 is in the works for May 4th, 5th, and 6th with a ton of amazing guests and events already scheduled. A They Live reunion, a Carrie reunion, and legendary Italian directors Ruggero Deodato and Mario Bava are the current highlights with more names being added all the time along with cool one-of-a-kind events like an actual "Prom Night" to coincide with the con's Carrie reunion. Keep watching Dread Central for more coverage of Texas Frightmare Weekend, and come back next month for another Texas Frightmaker!

There's nothing like adding a little Edgar Allan Poe to your day to brighten things up in the darkest of ways. We've got lots of new images for you to check out so get to steppin'!

Look for James McTeigue's The Raven starring John Cusack, Luke Evans and Brendan Gleeson on April 27th, 2012.

The Raven begins with Poe arriving in Baltimore as a serial killer is terrorizing the city, using the writer’s stories as the inspiration for his crimes. Poe is a suspect at first, but he eventually joins forces with a police inspector to solve the crimes and save the woman he loves.

    Synopsis
In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack, Being John Malkovich) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster).

When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.

Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

Bruce Campbell and Jane Levy Talk Scary Evil Dead Remake

Bruce Campbell and Jane Levy Talks Scary Evil Dead RemakeIt seems so long ago that we broke the story of a remake of the 1981 Sam Raimi classic. Since then things have been moving along nicely. The flick has finally found its Ash-like character in Jane Levy and recently she sat down to talk about the upcoming film along with The Chin himself.

"You can expect to have a damn scary horror movie," says former franchise Bruce Campbell to The Insider. "There's no Ash character -- The Evil Book is going to torment a new set of kids, so it's a remake, or a re-imagining or ... a re-whatever word you want to use. It's going to be re-scary." And what of the demonic rape-happy trees? "They're not terribly well-behaved this time either," Bruce laughed.

As for the new Ash ...

I'm so excited," Levy said. "I'm a big fan of the original. To me it's the scariest movie, ever. But this one is really different. They've changed it a lot, but it's still a pretty gory movie. My mom probably can't see it."

As for the tone, Jane says, "I think the humor in the first one came from the special effects of the time. I don't know that they meant it to be funny ... this one is not funny. It's definitely dark."

In FilmDistrict’s remake of Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, Levy would play Mia, a character that corresponds to Ash, who was played by Bruce Campbell in the original 1981 movie. Mia is one of five young people who head to the remote cabin where evil awaits. Recovering from a recent overdose, Mia is particularly vulnerable.

Raimi, Campbell and Rob Tapert are producing with Ghost House Pictures. Fede Alvarez is directing and co-wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult) revised the latest draft. The movie is targeted to open April 12, 2013.

During a video interview today for Dread Central's upcoming Indie Horror Month celebration (more about that on Monday), we chatted with writer/actor Leigh Whannell about what he's been cooking up for Insidious 2, the follow-up to 2011's hugely successful thriller helmed by James Wan.

Plans for the sequel were recently announced, and while it was revealed that Wan and some characters from the first Insidious would be returning, there hadn't any further news on just who would be back to deal with what's lurking in The Further.

While talking with Whannell about the success of the original, he revealed that his character, Specs, and his onscreen partner in crime, Tucker (played by Angus Sampson), would indeed be coming back for Insidious 2.

Exclusive: Writer/Actor Leigh Whannell Confirms Specs and Tucker Characters to Return for Insidious 2

"I can say that yes, my character will be seen in Insidious 2," said Whannell. "It may probably bum a lot of people out, though, to hear this news. It's part of the reason I don't even read the internet message boards anymore; there was this hatred that spewed out from fans saying 'I hated those guys! They sucked! They ruined the movie!' so there will probably be a lot of people out there who will be disappointed to hear that the Specs and Tucker characters will be coming back. (laughs)"

Look for Whannell to discuss the Saw franchise, the horrors of the studio system and lots more this March during Dread Central's Indie Horror Month celebration.

Horror filmmakers are special people. Just their inborn desire to scare the living shit out of anyone that sits down to watch their work is notable enough, but what would happen if a filmmaker got caught up in her own nightmares? The answer is Liquid Red.

We just received a ton of new images as well as a pretty chilling trailer for Robert Dyke's new movie Liquid Red. The film stars Debra Port, Caprice Benedetti and Vince Grant. Dyke's company, Scout Productions, working in association with Detroit-based Wall Street Productions, recently completed Liquid Red with an anticipated release later this year.

    From the Press Release
A beautiful filmmaker finds herself trapped in the fantasies and horrors of her movies. That idea jump-started Robert Dyke (director of Moontrap and Timequest, both featuring cult god Bruce Campbell) to create Liquid Red.

Dyke's experience in the cinematic world of fantasy began when he supervised the miniature photography for Sam Raimi's Evil Dead 2 and the matte painting composites for William Dear's Harry and the Hendersons.

"This concept combining my favorite genres of horror, fantasy and science fiction got me excited," said Dyke, "and this would give me the opportunity to do a showpiece for professional talents I wanted to work with again." Liquid Red became a journey of a woman (Debra Port) experiencing an alien invasion, murderous clones, mad scientists, the last days of planet Earth and, of course, zombies. Even stranger may be her encounters with a sexy movie star (Caprice Benedetti) and power-mad studio head (Vince Grant), who inhabit a surreal Hollywood.

"We definitely wanted Liquid Red to be a unique commercial piece of entertainment that would not disappoint fans of horror and science fiction. Being one myself, I believe we succeeded," said Dyke.

Buffalo Nickel Productions Unveils Decayed, Banshee, and Frankenstein's Patchwork Monster

Buffalo, NY-based Buffalo Nickel Productions is in production on a trio new feature films: Decayed, Banshee, and Frankenstein’s Patchwork Monster. Emil J. Novak, co-founder of the Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival, is the driving creative force behind all three films.

    From the Press Release:
Decayed, a quasi-anthology of four interlinked tales involving a worldwide plague of “zuvembies,” is the closest to completion, with the rough cut being fine tuned now. The stories feature characters adrift on a boat, a la Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat; members of a pirate radio station spreading information that the government wishes to contain; researchers seeking a cure to the plague; and the patrons of a bar who discover it’s sometimes better to go home early. The film showcases special make-up effects by Arick Szymecki, Andrew Lavin, and Amy Toth of Anomaly Effects, and many stills from the production appear in the new book Filming the Undead: How to Make Your Own Zombie Movie by fellow make-up effects guru Rod Durick of Zombified Studios.

Banshee, produced in association with Nightmare Kinetics, is also in post-production with some additional shooting planned. This film brings the classic Irish monster and her brood of hungry beasties to the Central Terminal Station in Buffalo. The production team shot on the grand concourse of the enormous art deco structure, as well as on the tower’s top floor, which entailed hauling equipment up seventeen flights of stairs. Melantha Blackthorne is featured with special make-up effects by Lavin, David Grey, and Sean Flahive.

BNP’s most ambitious production films this spring: Frankenstein’s Patchwork Monster, an amalgam of Mary Shelley’s original novel, James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein, and Hammer’s classic series. The script details the many failed experiments and creations of Dr. Frankenstein (played Michael O’Hear, who appeared in House of Horrors: the Movie and Slime City Massacre) during his obsessive quest for the secrets of life. Blackthorne, John Renna (SCM), and Daniel James portray the creatures with special make-up effects designed by Szymecki and Durick.

Novak writes, directs, shoots, and produces his films, sometimes in collaboration with others. “As an independent filmmaker, I strive for a balance between visual and scripted storytelling. Too many filmmakers today are content to emphasize one over the other, and the results are sometimes uneven. At Buffalo Nickel Productions we want to make movies as good as they used to be.”

UK Readers: Grimm Up North Hosting an Arthouse Horror Double Bill on February 23rdThe next installment in Grimm Up North's Monthly Screenings program in Manchester, England, is an arthouse horror double-bill of A Horrible Way to Die and Amer running on Thursday, February 23rd.

    A Horrible Way to Die:
An unrelenting and violently modern psycho-thriller that is just as disturbing as it is powerful. An award-winning festival favourite. Grimm are proud to announce that we will be screening the film before its official UK DVD release (in March).

    Amer:
‘This is art-house horror, a pure cinema for connoisseurs, a return to late-19th-century decadence.’ An homage to the great works of Argento and Bava, Amer is a psycho-sexual thriller that captures the zeitgeist of 70′s Italian horror effortlessly.

B-Sides: We Accept the Challenge of Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare

At long last! Jon Mikl Thor makes his first - and certainly not last - appearance in the B-Sides. If you’ve ever seen Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare, then you know what is coming. Prepare to have your ears blasted and your mind blown. Do you accept the challenge?

The members of Eighties rock band “The Tritonz” head out to a small house in the middle of nowhere to work on their new album and enjoy as much nookie as possible - but demons from the depths of hell have been unleashed. Bodies are possessed. Rubber puppet monsters attack. To save the world from the forces of evil, lead singer Triton experiences the power of Greyskull and is reborn as The Intercessor: a caped, leather bikini-wearing glam rock He-Man with a head of hair that can only be described as the be all, end all of 1980 hair metal fros.

It can only be the 1987 cult classic Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare.

At least a quarter of Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare’s running time is devoted to Canadian actor-rocker Jon Mikl Thor and his Tritonz band mates recording new songs for their latest album. Only one of those songs plays when Triton becomes The Intercessor and wrestles with demonic puppets that hurl rubbery ninja starfish. That song is entitled “We Accept the Challenge”.

This weekend’s B-sides presents to you Jon Mikl Thor’s “We Accept the Challenge” in all its Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare glory cheering his triumph as he wages war with the rubbery, unarticulated minions of Satan. The greatest seven minutes you will see all day. Behold!

Right This Way to Check Out Judson Scott's Cool Short Rebecca

The indie horror short may be one of the most underrated art forms in existence today. This kind of thing just doesn't happen in other mediums. A 10-minute 'buddy comedy' or a song that's only one verse and one chorus wouldn’t work. But good indie horror shorts work. Say hello to Rebecca.

There is very little I can say about Rebecca without giving away its OMG moment. The initial scenes will remind all of us of arguments we've had with our better halves from time to time, but Rebecca has a big issue she needs to work through. A very big one.

The performance of the beautiful Isidora Goreshter is top-notch, and director Judson Scott creates a brilliant environment for her to sow the seeds of her insanity. Rebecca is less than 10 minutes long and very entertaining. Believe us; it's worth your time. And be sure to watch through the credits. And after you watch it, let us know what you thought.
