The zombie menace is alive (sort of) and well, and they're ready to savage humans everywhere in the upcoming flick Escaping the Dead, which is coming at us all the way from Copenhagen. We have a look at the first stills for you here!

Directed by Martin Sonntag and Bastian Brinch Pedersen, the film, which is still shooting, stars Pedersen along with Rama Øzel, Daniel Hutera, Ali Öezkan, Iben Ma Bønnelycke, Nicolai Huan Nguyen, Camilla Ludvigsen, and Kim Sønderholm.

“The film is inspired by a series of articles about the death drug “Krokodil” that was published about the same period of time when Ronald Poppo had his face eaten by a naked man hooked on bath salt in Miami," says co-director Martin Sonntag. "We saw it as the perfect zombie plot: a death drug that turns people into zombies.The film has its starting point on a typical day for the lead character, David. David is the local marihuana pusher, but he is the kind of dealer that smokes more than he sells. In the meantime the country has been hit by a new death drug, and when David and his partner in crime Ahmir [are] offered some exceptionally cheap cocaine, they see it as an opportunity to earn big money at the big techno concert the following Friday, but the cocaine turns out to have a terrible side effect that creates a giant zombie outbreak that spreads across Copenhagen. In the film we follow David and his bloody fight out of the city.”

Info on a new surreal thriller that's hitting DVD and VOD today landed in our inbox so of course we're passing on the news. Along with the usual details and a few photos, we have a look at the film's artwork and trailer.

The Saw franchise helped kick off the so-called “torture porn” sub-genre of horror films, And whether or not you choose to accept its existence doesn’t deny that it has spawned a resurgence in the Grand Guignol.

For his film Vitals, it’s clear writer/director Marc Morgenstern wants to keep the legacy of James Wan’s franchise alive.

Morgenstern has just announced that “How I Met Your Mother” star Charlene Amoia (pictured) and Christopher Showerman (The Land That Time Forgot, Complacent) have been cast in his Saw-esque thriller that begins shooting in Los Angeles next month.

Vitals features Showerman as an unassuming electrician who wakes up in an abandoned motel room in a tub of ice with his kidney missing. It’s only a matter of time before he finds his wife in the adjacent room waiting to be the next victim to a horrible organ harvesting organization. Now they must use each other’s wits and skills to escape before their captors return and their dark secrets are revealed.

1988's Scrooged may be more comedy than horror, but since we're all big fans of its source material here at Dread Central, we wanted to let you know about a special 25th Anniversary print that's available TODAY!

We've had our eyes on the Hong Kong vampire flick Rigor Mortis for a while. U.S. audience have to wait several months before Juno Mak's bloody mixture of comedy and horror sees a Stateside release, but it's nice to see overseas audiences are embracing it.

Variety is reporting that Rigor Mortis has taken in a total of $17.5 million (that's $2.23 million USD) since its opening four weeks ago. That success was repeated last week when it became the top newcomer at the Taiwanese box office, pulling down NT$13 million (or $400,000 USD) in just ten days.

It's always interesting when a horror film captures the public's attention, no matter what corner of the world we're talking about. Sure, Rigor Mortis probably won't take the U.S. box office by storm, but it will be interesting to see what's got international horror fans all worked up.

We'll have a chance to see this one in spring 2014, when Well Go USA releases the throwback horror film. Rigor Mortis will be released in Japan by Shochiku in mid 2014. Ascot Elite will release it in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Viswas Films distributes to India, Distribucion de Peliculas Zatmeni releases it in Mexico, and Solar Films will put it out in The Philippines.

Definitely one to keep an eye on once 2014 hits.

Synopsis
RIGOR MORTIS stars action movie veteran Chin Siu-ho (Siu-ho) as a former vampire hunting actor who now finds himself reaching the end of the line as a washed-up star, separated from his wife and alienated from his son. Down on his luck and with barely a dollar to his name, he checks into Room 2442 in the housing estate, an allegedly haunted flat. His aim is to end his misery by doing himself in, but instead Siu-ho is interrupted by some of the other "occupants" of the building including a Taoist master-exorcist (Anthony Chan), a traumatized housewife with a tragic past (Kara Hui), as well as a seemingly benign elderly woman (Paw Hee-ching) who has an empty coffin conspicuously hanging in the middle of her apartment. Soon it becomes apparent to Siu-ho that the people around him and the situation are far from normal. Despite his lack of belief in superstition, Siu-ho is soon thrust into the battle of his life as vicious vampires with unsettled business begin to rise from the dead...

Renowned artist Matt Busch has not only created artwork for bands like Black Sabbath, Motely Crue and Alice Cooper, but he also has a project called Hollywood Is Dead wherein he recreates classic movie posters zombie style.

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, Hollywood Is Dead will soon be a coffee table book.

Busch doesn't just amend existing posters; he actually recreates the iconic artwork from scratch and adds a touch of the undead to each, coming up with such titles as Breakfast Is Tiffany, Alice from Underland, Beauty and the Feast and Cadavatar. Busch is obviously a massively talented dude with an awesome sense of humor. And now all his work will be collected in one spot as the Kickstarter campaign to create a book of Busch's work was successfully funded after just 12 days.

In just 12 days, artist Matt Busch has successfully crowd-funded the long-awaited coffee table art book Hollywood Is Dead. The hardcover book will feature the giant collection of zombified parody movie posters that Busch has illustrated over the past five years, dozens of which have never been revealed. The tome will also take a look at how the posters are created and feature a gallery of his other zombie-related works for properties like Night of the Living Dead and The Walking Dead. With more than half of the Kickstarter campaign ahead, Busch hopes to meet stretch goals, enabling him to make the book larger, adding more pages and additional features with collectors in mind.

The Hollywood Is Dead project began as a series of Star Wars movie poster images at the request of Lucasfilm, repainted by Busch into an alternate undead universe. With fandom hits like Zombie Wars: The Living Dead Strike Back, fans were eager to see the rest of the iconic cinema classics. The project soon gained attention on G4TV's "Attack of the Show" and "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" as Busch unveiled one new zombified poster after another. Fan favorites include Breakfast at Tiffany's (Breakfast Is Tiffany), Edward Scissorhands (Deadward Scissorhands) and Toy Story (Toy Gory).

Busch is already a well-known entertainment artist, having illustrated posters for properties like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, and others. "The Hollywood Is Dead book is really my love letter to the movie poster as an art form," comments Busch. "The project has let me not only explore my childhood memories, but study my favorite cinema artists' masterpieces. But I'd be lying if I said the zombie aspect wasn't a guilty pleasure, too!" The idea of doing a crowd-funding campaign wasn't initially considered by Busch. In the last year he pitched the book to dozens of top publishers and literary agents, most of which wanted smaller, abbreviated or even censored versions of the book, pushing Busch to rethink his crowd-funding options.

With just over two weeks left to campaign, Busch is already gearing up to meet stretch goals. "I'm so happy that the book is happening, and am beyond thankful for the support," comments Busch. "The goal now is to raise more funds so I can make the book larger. Wider and especially taller pages will allow one to really see the detail I've put in to hand-painting each and every one of these." Further, Hollywood Is Dead is currently set at 192 pages, but Busch hopes to push that to 240, accommodating the plethora of zombie material he has to share. While the stats of the book improve, backers reap the benefits without having to raise their pledge.

Busch also assures that supporters of the Kickstarter campaign will get the book months before anyone else, and at a better price. In addition, the Kickstarter features exclusive reward packages, like signed/sketched books, original paintings and art prints not available anywhere else. The campaign for the Hollywood Is Dead art book expires on November 29th.

Deadline has announced that Annabeth Gish has been cast in Mike Flanagan’s psychological thriller Somnia. Gish plays the case worker of a young orphaned boy whose dreams begin to manifest as real.

She joins Thomas Jane, Kate Bosworth, and Jacob Tremblay in the psychological thriller, which is produced by Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy alongside Demarest Film’s Sam Englebart and William D. Johnson. Flanagan co-wrote the film with Jeff Howard, who also co-wrote Flanagan’s Oculus.

The American Film Marker recently announced two films about sleep paralysis: Mara a narrative that sees a criminal psychologist investigating the murder of a man that ultimately reveals a mystery surrounding a demon that kills people while they sleep; and Nightmare, a documentary about the phenomenon from Room 237 director Rodney Ascher.

While Somnia doesn’t explicitly appear to be about sleep paralysis, the idea of nightmares coming to life while one sleeps appears to closely connected to ignore it entirely. It’s a largely untouched subject in horror (check out the superb Sublime for a movie that flirts with the idea in a relatively creepy way), so it’s always welcome to see films dealing with a very bizarre and terrifying, yet perfectly harmless, phenomenon.

"The Strain" is picking up steam at the FX network, where it was granted a full season order of thirteen episodes and outfitted with a full writing staff to bring the series to fruition.

Deadline reports that FX's plan is to run "The Strain" from anywhere between 39-65 episodes. FX is obviously leaving some flexibility here based on how well the show performs, and also how well the premise adapts to television. That the network is so committed isn't surprising considering they landed the project in a bidding war. They clearly see the potential in such a story, which is good news for horror fans clamoring for more high quality genre entertainment.

Guillermo del Toro will direct the pilot from a script he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan, who also co-authored novels with him. Carlton Cuse ("Lost,""Bates Motel"), who helped develop the adaptation, executive produces alongside del Toro and will serve as showrunner, overseeing the potential series with del Toro. Hogan and del Toro’s longtime manager/producing partner Gary Ungar also serve as exec producers of the project, produced by FX Prods. Kevin Durand, Richard Sammel, Lauren Lee Smith, Jack Kesy, Jonathan Hyde, John Hurt, Miguel Gomez, Corey Stoll, Robert Maillet, and Mia Maestro all star.

"The Strain" is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

“Is this the end of zombie Shakespeare?” It would appear not, as John Murlowski’s comedy Zombie Hamlet makes its way onto DVD on December 31st. Written by John McKinney and with original music by Jackson Rathbone, whom you might remember from Twilight or, if you’re too ashamed to admit you knew that, the indie horror flick Dread.

The film stars Travis Wester, Jason Mewes, Shelley Long, Vanessa Lee Evigan, John Amos, and June Lockhart.

Zombie Hamlet tells the story of first-time film director, Osric Taylor (Travis Wester), as he finally manages to get his dream movie financed. He envisions Shakespeare's Hamlet set against the epic backdrop of the American Civil War. Osric heads to a small Louisiana town to start filming when his production funding unexpectedly dries up. With no other options, he agrees to accept southern matron Hester Beauchamp's offer to finance his movie, as long as he throws some zombies into the film to attract a wider audience. When Hester suddenly dies mid-shoot, and with the local sheriff and ambitious news reporter Shine Reynolds (Shelley Long) hot on his trail, Osric is thrust into one precarious and hilarious situation after another in a desperate attempt to keep “Zombie Hamlet” alive.

Level 33 Entertainment is behind the exclusive DVD release, which will be made available on Amazon.com at an SRP of $14.99, and for rent at rental outlets (but not Blockbuster; indie all the way).

Storm King Productions will be bringing their comic book, John Carpenter’s Asylum, to the annual Long Beach Comic Con and Horror Convention this weekend (November 23-24). If you missed this book when it debuted back in May, you'll have an opportunity to purchase all three newly reprinted issues. But the Storm King booth will also be offering an exclusive "convention signature" edition of issue # 3 that has been pre-signed by John Carpenter.

The Asylum love doesn't stop there, however, as this convention will see the debut of an animated trailer for the comic. The trailer comes courtesy of artist Leonardo Manco, and is scored by John and Cody Carpenter. Thomas Ian Griffith narrates, in case you were still on the fence about checking Asylum out (you shouldn't be, it's really cool).

Per the Storm King press release, Storm King and LBCC have come together to bring the talents of Eric Maruscak, an illustrator who has been appearing at festivals and conventions across the Unites States, making giant chalk murals as performance art, to the convention in Long Beach.

Eric has appeared at the World Science Festival in New York, multiple New York Comic Cons and New York Anime Festivals, and San Diego Comic Con, and C2E2 among others. His works have promoted such productions as the TV series, Revolution, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Eric will create a mural of one of JC’s Asylum’s pages over the course of the two day convention in a space adjacent to Storm King’s booth. He will also record time lapse video of the entire process which will be posted online not long after the event.

If you're into some of the Master of Horror's other projects, you'll also have an opportunity to snag some super cool posters.

In honor of the 35th Anniversary of the release of the movie Halloween and following a now three-year tradition of partnership with the Hero Initiative at LBCC, Storm King will also have available at its booth special limited edition, exclusive posters designed by comic book artist Darick Robertson and signed by both the artist and John Carpenter with all proceeds going to benefit the Hero Initiative. There will also be a second art poster honoring They Live designed by John J. Hill, also to benefit the Hero Initiative.

Robert Patrick has signed on to battle a trio of evil trick-or-treaters on Halloween in Bruce McDonald's Hellions, which is currently filming in Toronto.

According to Deadline, Patrick will play Corman, a hardened cop who winds up protecting a teenager (Chloe Rose) on All Hallows' Eve. If Bruce McDonald sounds familiar it's because he's the twisted genius behind Pontypool, which means Hellions is already a must see.

The horror/thriller also stars Rossif Sutherland (Reign), Luke Bilyk ("Degrassi: The Next Generation"), and Rachel Wilson (Republic of Doyle).

Whizbang Films’ Frank Siracusa is producing the script from Pascal Trottier (The Colony). No word on when to expect this one yet, but considering its holiday setting, expect it sometime in fall 2014.

Everyone loves a good Beetlejuice 2 story, right? Today it was Winona Ryder's turn to hop aboard the sequel's ongoing hype train to tease the movie without saying much of anything at all.

While talking with The Daily Beast, Ryder had this to say:

"I'm kind of sworn to secrecy. But it sounds like it might be happening."

Of course there's more. The obligatory "we won't be doing this unless it's done right" spiel that's commonplace when assuring fans that this sequel won't be like all those terrible ones. But hey, at least she's aware of the trepidation.

"It's a very precious movie to people," she explained. "So there are a lot people like, 'DON'T.'"

While we have no real idea what the movie might actually be about, Ryder says a little more than what we've gotten so far from anywhere else. And it's still not much...

"It's not a remake. It's 27 years later. And I have to say, I love Lydia so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later."

Ryder was only 17 when Beetlejuice was shot, and she expresses an enduring fondness for the movie and her character that has stayed with her all this time. "That's one of those movies where little kids stop me," she said. "I'm so associated with it. I think it gave me my career. I was such a weird looking kid."

Don't worry, I'm sure we'll have more on Beetlejuice 2 next week.

More casting news rolls in today for the latest feature from Blumhouse, The Boy Next Door. This time it's Hill Harper ("CSI: New York") who joins the cast. He'll play the principal at the titular boy's school.

Jennifer Lopez, John Corbett and Kristin Chenoweth also star. Rob Cohen (XXX) will direct the micro-budget movie, which will be distributed by Universal. Blumhouse is making the movie with Smart Entertainment and Nuyorican Productions.

Lopez will play a newly separated mother who finds herself attracted to the teenage boy who moves in next door and befriends her son. When she starts and then abruptly ends their illicit romance, he’s not ready to let her go -- in a very Fatal Attraction kind of way. Chenoweth will play Lopez's best friend.

Image Entertainment is bringing The Devil's Knot to us in 2014, and while we wait they've gone ahead and supplied us with a poster to help keep the movie in our consciousness for just a little while longer.

Although I have to wonder how many more West Memphis Three stories we need, I have to admit I am interested in seeing this - if only because of the great talent involved in front of and behind the camera.
