Theatrical Release Date Announced for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre MPI/Dark Sky Films announced today a June 20 theatrical release for their newly restored version of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The re-release comes in celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary. A DVD and Blu-ray release will surely follow. Stay tuned, kids!

In 1973, Tobe Hooper, a cast of unknown actors, and a crew of Austin film students and recent graduates headed to Round Rock, Texas in the middle of July. For the next 32 days they worked around the clock in 100 degree weather to make The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The movie became a huge hit on the drive-in circuit and eventually grossed $30 million. It was invited to the 1975 Cannes Film Festival Director’s Fortnight, and was acquired as part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Since then, it has become the eighth highest-grossing horror franchise of all time. In 2012, Sight & Sound magazine named it one of the 250 most important movies ever made.

The new version of the film will be released in theaters this summer with a brand new 4K transfer, roughly four times the resolution of today’s more commonly used 2K for cinema. This is the only transfer of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to go back to the original 16mm A/B rolls, the actual film that rolled through the cameras.

Details regarding the film’s theatrical re-release this summer will be announced in the coming months.

Full Rosemary's Baby Details RevealedRight now we have several new stills on tap from NBC's reimagined "Rosemary's Baby." Check 'em out and please practice safe sex or risk the chance of accidentally shooting the devil's child out of your sac. Remember, kids, wear a rubber!

From the Press Release
This new adaptation of “Rosemary’s Baby” centers on a young married couple who escapes New York and moves to Paris with hopes of leaving their sad past behind.

After a series of unfortunate events, Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse are presented with an offer they can’t refuse – an apartment at the most prestigious address in the city. Problem is, it comes with a haunted past and an immeasurable price.

Rosemary (Zoe Saldana; Avatar, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Guy (Patrick J. Adams; “Suits”) are incredulous at their good fortune and find comfort in a strange city among their new friends and neighbors, the Castevets. This well-to-do successful older couple takes the newcomers under their wing and become very involved with the Woodhouses’ lives. Things seem to be perfect as Rosemary becomes pregnant and Guy’s career takes off. As their spirited best friend, Guy’s co-worker Julie (Christina Cole), spends quality time with Rosemary in the city, she finds Rosemary’s health worrying and cautions both of them that something isn’t right. Soon there are other signs warning Rosemary to be careful.

Guy seems to be pulling away from Rosemary and spending a great deal of time hanging around with Roman Castevet (Jason Isaacs; Harry Potter franchise). Roman’s wife, the whimsical Margaux Castevet (Carole Bouquet; For Your Eyes Only), assures Rosemary her herbs and holistic medicine will help with the pregnancy, but are they helping or hurting? Rosemary’s quizzical nature leads her to investigate the building and its past residents. She uncovers a dark past and realizes who Roman Castevet truly is. But is it too late? Are the Castavets’ perceived sinister motives legitimate or all in the pregnancy brain of Rosemary?

In this new four-hour, two-part psychological thriller written by Scott Abbott (Queen of the Damned) and James Wong (Final Destination 3, “American Horror Story,” “The X-Files”) and directed by Agnieszka Holland (Europa Europa, “The Wire,” “Treme”), Rosemary quickly finds herself surrounded by peculiar people and startling occurrences. Isolated in her apartment in a city where she doesn’t speak the language, she begins to fear the worst: Guy may have made a pact with their neighbors, promising their newborn as a human sacrifice in occult rituals in exchange for a writing career. To what lengths would someone be willing to go for success and fortune?

“Rosemary’s Baby” is executive produced by Joshua D. Maurer, Alixandre Witlin, and David Stern and produced by City Entertainment, KippSter Entertainment, and Lionsgate Television.

A Shocking Twist Awaits in this Preview and Half Dozen Stills from Hannibal Episode 2.06 - FutamonoActually, these photos and preview of next week's Episode 2.06 of "Hannibal," entitled "Futamono," don't show much, but NBC's synopsis reveals something rather spoilery. So skim through the text if you want to avoid it and focus on the eye candy.

"Hannibal" Episode 2.06 - "Futamono" (airs 3/28/14; 10-11PM):SUSPICIONS RISE ABOUT HANNIBAL WHEN HE THROWS A DINNER PARTY WHILE THE CHESAPEAKE RIPPER IS ON A KILLING SPREE - When a city councilman’s body is found in a parking lot, intertwined with a tree, the artistry and missing organs suggest the work of the Chesapeake Ripper.

Jack (Laurence Fishburne) and the team race against time to catch the Ripper while he’s still on his killing spree. When Will (Hugh Dancy) suggests the possibility that the Ripper is filling his pantry with the victims’ organs, Jack crashes Hannibal Lecter’s (Mads Mikkelsen) dinner party to collect evidence and test the meat for human DNA. Jack’s growing suspicions drive Alana (Caroline Dhavernas) even closer to Hannibal, believing he is the victim of a witch hunt.

Meanwhile, clues from the tree man help the BAU zero in on a location they believe the Ripper used. There they discover the most shocking revelation of Jack Crawford’s career—Miriam Lass alive.

Set Visit Coverage: 5 Fun Facts We Learned on the Set of A Haunted House 2The house I’m in holds a lot of mysteries within its walls and halls. From infidelity to unnatural deaths, this place definitely packs a patina of evil. Beginning with its stint as a secret-keeping casa in the dark drama American Beauty...

And now serving as the home of haunted Malcolm and his new wife, this eclectic Colonial Revival reeks of atmosphere... and cyber-farts.

You may remember Malcolm (played by Marlon Wayans, who is making his feature directorial debut here) from the first A Haunted House movie, in which horror films such as Paranormal Activity and Insidious were shamelessly spoofed. For this sequel, we’ll see riffs on The Conjuring, The Possession, and Sinister. In fact, the day I’m on set Marlon is acting out the never-ending Skype scene from Sinister– but instead of passing along advice, the online professor is passing gas.

Along for the return ride is Rick Alvarez, who’s been on the Wayans bandwagon for years. He co-wrote the A Haunted House 2 script with Marlon, and he also serves as a producer on the film. Between shots, out by the pool in the Southern California sun, Rick gave me the lowdown on this lowbrow comedy: “It’s a little bit of The Conjuring, a little bit of Sinister, and some of The Amityville Horror. The classical mixed with the new ones. [Plot-wise] it’s Malcolm trying to fit into this ready-made family.

As Marlon explains, it’s hard enough to just adjust to a completely new domestic situation – there’s a demonic situation going on, too. “On top of all the stuff he has going on with trying to blend in with his new wife and her kids, they move into this place and literally everything in the house is evil. My daughter gets a box that is possessed, my son gets an imaginary friend and he is the worst imaginary friend ever, plus there’s the Abigail doll – which is, of course, a play on Annabelle from The Conjuring. Then there is Malcolm’s ex-girlfriend Kisha [Essence Atkins returns in the role], who killed everyone in the first movie, and she moves next door. So it’s just a lot of complications! It’s constant, consistent conflicts that will hopefully lead to good jokes.

Aside from the Skype scenario, I also get to see real flames when a pivotal twist is played out in which Abigail is set on fire. But that’s not all. We picked up all kinds of tidbits and fun facts in the day we spent with Marlon and Co. Here’re just a few:

1) Marlon Asks: ‘What Would Wan Do?’

Marlon, who began the Scary Movie franchise with his brothers back in the 90s, never does anything out of disrespect to the lampooned filmmakers. “I am not going ‘Heya your movie sucked!’ That’s not the purpose of it,” he explained. “I am just going, ‘You know, I liked what you guys did with the doll but watch where we go with it.’ And we do go there!

When I ask Rick if any of the directors, such as James Wan, has made a cameo appearance, he laughs and says, “I wish he had! We actually wrote one in and we were hoping we might get him, but it ended up not going that route.” Both men say they watched The Conjuring numerous times to see how the suspenseful parts were done and did their best to pay proper homage.

2) Essence never forgets who’s signing the checks.

While she’s in the makeup chair, the lovely and perennially youthful Essence Atkins takes a few moments to dish on what it’s like to work in Wayans World yet again. They have a longstanding professional relationship – which is not to say hanky-panky isn’t sometimes also involved. “I worked with Marlon on 'The Wayans Brothers' TV show, but mainly with his brother Shawn.” She says she had a great time playing the homicidal honey in A Haunted House, and adds, “I usually end up making out with Shawn, so A Haunted House was the first time I made out with Marlon.” I have to ask, who’s the better kisser?, and Essence gives comedic pause, then replies, “Um... who’s writing the checks right now? Oh, Marlon! Marlon is the better kisser!

3) Jaime Pressly is white.

Marlon tells me her character, Megan, is “The quintessential white woman. She is the run-of-the-mill suburban mom, you know. She’s all into recycling, carpooling with the kids and all that. And has her insecurities about her being pale; she is a little sensitive about that and a little neurotic.” As an actress, she’s a little more on the ball. “She is a lot of fun,” Marlon says. “She’s like a Lucille Ball type. Really expressive eyes, her character is really [zany]. It was fun to play those different angles, because Megan has a little checkered past, and sometimes it kind of spills out of her… Jaime found the right take on it. It’s great to improvise with her because I go all over the place, and she is able to go with me. She knows how to go with the flow. We have a couple really funny love scenes, you know… she gets to let loose. It’s a naughty movie.

4) It’s a bad idea to cheat on your clairvoyant wife or your dead girlfriend.

Essence confirms that Kisha “hates the new wife.” I can only imagine what kind of mayhem ensues once Malcolm’s two women come face-to-face. In fact, we’ll all have to imagine it until the movie comes out. That’s one spoiler nobody would reveal. So I ask Essence if she gets to play with any of the creepy props – such as the Abigail doll, which is sitting in the makeup room as we speak. “No, I’m the creepy prop really,” Essence reveals. “When I show up, that’s all that’s needed! Who better to frighten people than a woman? We are unpredictable and extremely adaptive and wily. I think it’s a smart thing to utilize that we have those traits within us that come very easy.

Marlon says Kisha isn’t the only one with infidelity issues. “Hayes MacArthur and Missi Pyle play the Ed and Lorraine Warren characters from The Conjuring. She is a medium, and she comes to help us out. He’s her partner. And all they do is argue, her and him, because he cheated on her years ago. And she kind of knew he was going to cheat before he did because of her psychic ability. You know… that leads to a lot of fun stuff! They improv great together.”

5) The Demon’s name is Dave.

Rick tells us, “Our demon is played by Dave Sheridan. Who was actually in the first movie as Bob the camera guy. This time you won’t know it’s him because of all the make-up, but he was also the bad guy in Scary Movie. He’s been in almost every Wayans movie that I have been involved in. He’s hilarious, one of the great lesser known character actors in comedy that you may have never heard of; he’s just brilliant and insane and hilarious.

The sequel to A Haunted House catches back up with Malcolm (Wayans), who is trying to get a fresh start after having to exorcise demons out of his ex. However, moving into a beautiful home with his new girlfriend and her two children does nothing to stop the paranormal — or the humor.

Marlon Wayans, Jaime Pressly, Gabriel Iglesias, Ashley Rickards, Steele Stebbins, Essence Atkins, Affion Crocket, Dave Sheridan, Hayes MacArthur, Missi Pyle, and Cedric The Entertainer star.

Open Road Films is releasing the spoof, which is directed by Michael Tiddes and co-written by Wayans and Rick Alvarez.

IDW and Tom Beland Unleash Chicacabra with Chupacabras, Vejigantes, Fistfights, and Weed!Tom Beland, best known for his multiple Eisner-nominated series True Story, Swear to God, brings his unique storytelling to IDW this June in an all-new graphic novel series entitled Chicacabra.

Chicacabra is a story infused with the humanity for which Beland's work is so rightly acclaimed, but this time he has written and illustrated an all-new cast of very human characters in a more supernatural setting.

“Tom Beland’s work is the perfect mix of comic book storytelling with expressive art, interesting characters, and a resonant, emotional core,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “and I couldn’t be happier to see him apply those skills in this new way on Chicacabra. Tom’s books have always been the kind of thing you want to hand someone, whether they’re new to comics or a veteran reader who thinks they’ve seen it all. There’s something for everyone in his work, and never more so than with Chicacabra, which pushes into the supernatural while still staying a fundamentally grounded, human tale.”

Synopsis:
You would think being a young woman in high school would come with more than enough drama, but for Isabel Sanchez that is a mere drop in the bucket of her life. On the outside Isabel looks and acts like your average Puerto Rican girl, but after a family tragedy and then a mysterious incident, she finds herself with a monster capable of great brutality living inside her. But is it her friend or foe? Isabel will have to learn to live with a killing machine inside her and navigate high school in this first in a series of planned Chicacabra graphic novels. And heads will roll, to say the least!

Chicacabra will be available in a regular edition and a special version with an alternate cover only offered at the Puerto Rico Comic-Con, May 24-25 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center.

"I think people will relate to Isabel. I think we all have a chupacabra in us in some way. There's fear, doubt, many things that you hold deep inside of yourself,” said Beland. “This is about two souls working together in a relationship that could be damaging as well as healing. I love making it. To a degree it was as emotional as making TSSTG."

Chicacabra #1, a 200-page, black & white, $17.99 trade paperback, debuts in June 2014.

I believe we all know what a chupacabra is, but in case you're unfamiliar with the term "vejigante" (we were), per Wikipedia, it's a folkloric character in Puerto Rican festival celebrations (mainly seen in Carnival time). In the old days, the vejigante symbolized the Devil in the battle between good and evil, and vejigante masks are usually meant as "fright" masks. Traditional colors of the Vejigantes were black, red, white, and yellow. Today, vejigantes wear brightly colored, ornate masks of all colors and a costume with bat-like wings. The term derives from the word vejiga (bladder) and gigante (giant), due to custom of blowing up and painting cow bladders.

First Look at Investigation Discovery's Restless Souls

First Look at Investigation Discovery's Restless SoulsDunno about you guys, but if someone murdered me, there would be no force either worldly or otherworldly that would stop me from exacting revenge paranormal style. Agree? Then you are really gonna dig Investigation Discovery's "Restless Souls."

From the Press Release
There’s a saying that the dead tell no tales, but that’s not always the case. Investigation Discovery’s all-new special "RESTLESS SOULS" reveals what happens when a murder victim returns from beyond the grave to expose her killer’s deadly secrets and avenge her untimely death.

Premiering Monday, April 14, at 9/8c on Investigation Discovery, "RESTLESS SOULS" examines the 2004 murder mystery of Ashley Howley and how a complete stranger, psychic medium Kristy Robinett, volunteered her services to help solve the case and bring closure to Howley’s family. Interviews with Robinett, law enforcement, and loved ones including Howley’s cousin and the family spokesperson Kerry Combs, illustrate the three-year police investigation alongside Robinett’s independent search for answers using the victim’s own ghostly clues as her guide.

“'RESTLESS SOULS' goes beyond the grave to investigate murder like ID has never done before, with help from the victim herself,” said Kevin Bennett, general manager of Investigation Discovery. “By crossing our signature true-crime programming with this paranormal investigation, we expand beyond the traditional crime-solving techniques and demonstrate how real people have found closure in the deaths of their loved ones through alternate means.”

After calling the police to report a break-in at her Columbus, Ohio, apartment, 20-year-old Ashley Howley went missing. Though her car was discovered abandoned in a parking lot nearby, the case went cold for more than a year with little evidence leading police to her body or killer. Then one night, not far from Howley’s family home in Michigan, Kristy Robinett was awakened by the ghost of a young woman who called herself Ashley and claimed to have been murdered. It wasn’t unheard of for a restless soul to make its presence known to Robinett, a psychic medium who has communicated with the dead since childhood and been called upon by law enforcement to aid investigations. What made this time different was that it was the ghost rather than the police enlisting her services. An internet search led Robinett to news reports of Howley’s disappearance with photos identical to her supernatural visitor. For months Howley’s spirit revisited Robinett to offer more clues about her body’s location. She volunteered her time and unique abilities to help locate Howley’s grave, working with local police and a family advocate, Howley’s cousin Kerry Combs, to piece together the clues. Her three-year journey ended as surprisingly as it began, with a shocking discovery that left many questioning their belief in life after death.

"RESTLESS SOULS" is produced for Investigation Discovery by Indigo Films with David M. Frank as executive producer and Carl Schick as supervising producer. For Investigation Discovery, Max Culhane is executive producer, Sara Kozak is senior vice president of production, Kevin Bennett is general manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, Destination America, American Heroes Channel, and Discovery Fit & Health.

Tilda Swinton Tells Us All About Eve in Only Lovers Left Alive; Hear Audio of the Full Roundtable Interview

Only Lovers Left Alive Online and On TumblrWhile some may argue the audience will be only barely left alive after sitting through 2-1/2 hours of slow, dreamy, arty, self-indulgent vampire drama Only Lovers Left Alive, no one can accuse its star, Tilda Swinton, of being anything other than mesmerizing.

The actress has worked with writer/director Jim Jarmusch a number of times (my favorite of their collaborations is The Limits of Control), but this project seems to be extra special to her because it's been in the pipeline for so long… an eternity, I guess you could say!

In the film Swinton plays Eve, an ancient, art-appreciating vampire who's in love with a gifted but melancholy musician, Adam (Tom Hiddleston).

With Only Lovers Left Alive (review) arriving (finally!) in theaters on April 11th, she sat down with a group of us at a recent press day in Beverly Hills to talk "all about Eve."

In addition, because it was so very interesting and we know a lot of our readers are completists when it comes to Jarmusch and/or vampire films, we have the full interview in audio form as well on Page 2.

Q: What was your favorite characteristic about Eve?

Tilda Swinton: That she has this perspective that she doesn't sweat the small, the medium, or the big stuff. That she's full of wonder and she is always looking up, which feels to me pretty much the prerogative of people who have lived that length of time. She knows what's worth what.

Q: Is the title from a poem, or did Jim tell the origin of that?

TS: The title has kind of been floating around for years. Someone made a book [The Stone's Option] and they were going to make a film. I remember when Jim first mentioned the project to me, the title was there. It was a flake that was already there. It just feels like it has always been there.

Q: This is your third time working with Jim, and I was wondering, for you, do you guys even have to talk anymore, or do you have psychic connection?

TS: As for Jim and myself, we talk all the time. Whether we talk about anything that is pertinent to the making of the film, I don't know. We are friends now, and part of the reason I love to work with him means that I get to hang out with my pal for longer than if I wasn't shooting with him. This one was another long gestation. It was seven or eight years since now, and when he first rang me up and said, 'Hey, man, let's make another vampire film," and so that means a lot of meetings over many many breakfasts when I was flying through New York, and I was saying, 'Where are we?' and moments on the phone and conversations in dark corners about where we were going to go next over the years. When we came to shoot, the lovely thing about those long developments is that when you come to shoot, it's just [gravy]. You're so relieved to finally be putting it down and you've also had that length of time to talk about it and you don't really need to talk about it that much.

Q: The physicality that you bring to this role is so incredible. It's nuanced, it's great. Just you walking down the street is pretty badass. How do you bring that to your role? Was there some kind of inspiration for how you move like a vampire?

TS: We talked a lot about what it would be if you were that unsocialized because they've been lifted out of human society, and very quickly we talked about them as lone wolves so we talked about them as animals. When we were putting together the look, we ended up filling those wigs with yak hair and wolf hair, and there's a heartbeat that comes up and down in the soundtrack that is actually a wolf's heart so I thought a lot about wolves when we were thinking about how Eve would walk about. If you're not in the pack, if you are alone at night and you can take your time, you can pick your rhythm, and we knew that we wanted… I think this is always the case with Jim; not only is the music a very important life blood, but also the camera, the move, the feeling of movement is always very important to him, and this one particularly because of this passage through these two different wildernesses. We had the wonderful Yorick Le Saux, who is a great cinematographer who I have worked with a couple of times before with Luca Guadagnino in I Am Love and also in Julia with Erick Zonca, and he is such a great dance partner so walking alongside him was really kind of dreamy. So wolves I would say were mainly where we went to.

Q: What was the essence for you of the attraction, the sort of lasting relationship between your character and Tom's? And what did he do, or what did you need to do, to create this sort of lived-in, really comfortable long-term bond that you guys clearly share on screen?

TS: One of the first bits of sand in the oyster for Jim, which he immediately told me about on that telephone call eight years ago, was this book by Mark Twain called The Diaries of Adam and Eve, which is so delightful and playful. It's sort of fictional, or maybe not, diaries of Adam and Eve which spell out very clearly that this is an enormous love affair between two opposites. That was a foundational stone for us – that they would be in it for the long haul, but completely different. That I find really enticing, to show two people really loving each other, but not liking each other at all. SO we talked a lot about that and that was fun because it feels really human playing with that. We also, as you noticed, we wanted it to be about a marriage in which they talk as long relationships do. There's a tradition of people coming together and then 'The End' and you never really see them living it out, the ups and the downs, the talking it through and chewing the cud, and we really spent a lot of time wanting to get that tone of two people who were family. It's a long, long marriage. They are family, they are the same kind, and that's why they still dig each other even though they are so different and he is so tricky to live with and she is such a space cadet. They have this communication thing going and they really like talking about stuff. We really wanted to show stuff. We felt it was something we hadn't necessarily seen before.

Q: It's very fun to watch these vampires because I haven't seen vampires like this on screen before – so modern. And I have to admit, I kind of identify with Adam's character. He is a bit more cynical. These vampires have lived around for years and years, and he's kind of distasteful of the modern day whereas Eve is very much more celebrating every period in history and all of the arts. What was that like for you as a character to really thrive in the celebration of all of these different times where a vampire could also be very cynical?

TS: Well, he is very young. He has a lot to learn. He is only 500 years old. She's 3,000 years old. She is a druid. She has seen it all and she knows that survival is possible if one keeps one's eyes open and takes it all in. It's not like she is recommending turning one's face away. She talks about witnessing the Inquisitions, the Middle Ages. She has witnessed all the holocausts, and yet she has still seen humanity and spirit and nature survive those things so she knows that as long as one keeps looking up and as long as one keeps breathing and keeps one's perspective, survival is possible. And when he gets down and she says to him that you're immersion in your own despair is actually vanity and if you could just use your life to make the right sense of priorities, concentrate on nature, get your guidance from nature, which survives consistently, particularly in a place like Detroit… to go to Detroit and feel the way nature is taking over there is a really positive thing. And kindness and friendship and dancing. She has her priorities right.

Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive

MORE about Only Lovers Left Alive from Tilda Swinton on the NEXT page!

Only Lovers Left Alive Online and On TumblrQ: With [John Hurt's] Marlowe, and obviously we see it also in Tom Hiddleston's character, [Christopher] Marlowe is the real writer of Shakespeare's works in this universe. I was wondering with your character if you thought of any interactions she may have had over the course of history that may have changed things that didn't make it into the film.

TS: That's great. I like that question. I'd like to leave that to your fantasy. I think it's interesting that she's, as we tell the story, not an artist. He's an artist and she's not.

She's a 'noticer,' and in many ways she is a kind of conductor. She is a lightning conductor. She can feel the substance of history. She can tell how old this is. She can read every language under the sun through her fingertips. She's a noticer. She knows every Latin name of every creature. She is the eyes and the ears and the fingertips, and he is the artist. I think it is interesting that they are put against each other. That sort of came out of the Mark Twain, her noticing. He's the one who names everything in the garden, he's the sort of authority, he's putting it out there, and she's the one who's picking it up. We sort of just riffed on that. But I love the idea of anybody's fantasies about anything that she might have had a hand in. You can feel her going through the centuries just spinning plates and then running away.

Q: The thing that got me about the characters is that there is a degree to which I don't see the vampire part so much as the immortal part. They have been, at the start of the film, apart for a while, but for them maybe 100 years has been an hour and a half …

TS: It's like a weekend, they have just a sort of mini break. I love the practical approach to immortality, or even let's face it, long life. I don't know if you have to be much older than 26 these days, maybe even young, to feel the pull of fatigue and over-saturation and losing one's way and needing to reboost your interest in life, living, society, one's fellow man. I think that's a pretty unexotic thing, but I don't know whether it's necessarily looked at very often. It's also a kind of taboo really, the idea that society seems to hold these days that you just aim for 21 and just stay there somehow by an act of will and you just stay on that pinpoint and you don't look down and you don't ever encompass the idea of getting any older because that would be the end. And I love the fact that what Jim's looking at here is how one goes on living, how one goes on loving, how one goes on renewing and… rebooting one's sense of wonder and engagement. It feels strangely radical and unfashionable, the very fact that they are trying not be young and they're trying to survive youth.

Q: I was wondering if you could speak to the relationship you have with your sister in the film?

TS: Eve loves Ava [Mia Wasikowska], and who knows what their story is? She does say they are related by blood and one doesn't necessarily know what that means, but she's even younger than Adam, she's really a baby, and one of the things we're really looking at there is the older they get, even the gap between the age of Adam and Eve, the older they get, these creatures, with wisdom comes this extraction from human society. Ava is still super mixed up in it all. She's mixed up, she's still having a relationship with human beings, with the zombies. She's not there yet, maybe she won't even get there.

And then he, Adam, is in this situation where he is detached a bit, but detached in a kind of dark and truculent way where they just annoy the hell out of him and he can't stop complaining about zombies. And then Eve has just made it to the other side of the looking glass and she is full of compassion, but she knows what not to sweat and human society can't throw any curve balls for her. She has seen it all and she knows what is going to come out in the wash. But Ava is the youngest. She is still dangerously mixed up in human society and that is the problem. If she were more detached, then maybe things wouldn't turn out the way they do.

Q: As you reflect on the film and the experience of making it, and Eve's transition, the elegant grace with which she travels through time and immortality, what do you take away from the experience of making this film or learn about yourself in the process of doing it?

TS: Making any piece of work over a long period of time, something that I've had the privilege to do many times, I really love it because it means that the course of the piece of work tracks a huge course of my life. So I had done eight years of living during the course of working on this film with Jim and that's always true when I make a film and it takes eleven years, that's eleven years of my life. That's a thing that I know how to negotiate and I like because it means that you're actually cooking with real stuff in a way. On this one, I have to confess, there's a particular aspect which is quite particular – my mother died during the course of the making of this film, which is strange because we were preparing for so long to make a film about immortality, and then we started shooting and she was diagnosed with terminal cancer and suddenly I was thrown into this very strange reflection, and for me, honestly, now a year later, this film is all about mortality, in the lightest way. It's got a lot to do with people preparing how to die or how to survive death, which is what they do eventually. Even Marlowe, when he says, 'I soon will be dead,' you can see that he is kind of up for it. And that's a heavy thing to lay on this room, but it is true. I was not preparing for that to throw a shadow on the film, and now a year later I see that it's enriched my personal experience of the film even more because it's about surviving not only life, but surviving death, and I'm very grateful to it. And also, by the by, it so happens that my parents celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary a month before my mother died and they were, for me, the archetypal Adam and Eve. They were this long, long wed partnership. It's very personal, more personal than I intended it to be, this film. It's been an interesting discourse to be a part of during that moment in my life.

Q: Did you consult with the designer on your costume?

TS: Yes, we always work together very closely. As far as I'm concerned, the lion's share of my work is putting together the disguise, and I like to have it done so that once we start shooting, one can just play and stop working. We had so much fun putting all the looks together of all the portraits because what we needed to do was to have no distractions, we had to keep alive this idea that they were living in all centuries at once. So every element, the height of the heel, or the substance, the fabric of the pants, the cut of the jacket, needed to not indicate overwhelmingly any one period so that a jacket might be, 'Oh that's a bit 50s. Oh that's a bit 1530's, [and] that's a little bit last season." That feeling of fluidity and essential lastibility of every element was really a delight to do and [our designer] was really masterful at working that line. But Jim himself has such a clear eye and was very sort of a martinet on making sure that that agelessness was fluid. Even tiny details of makeup. There was a moment when we all thought it would be kind of fantastic to have an eyeline, and then we suddenly realized that would just fix it, and you can't go into the 1530's with an eyeline – little things like that were really a delight to play with!

Synopsis:
Jim Jarmusch’s ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE tells the tale of two fragile and sensitive vampires, Adam (Tom Hiddleston) and Eve (Tilda Swinton), who have been lovers for centuries. Both are cultured intellectuals with an all-embracing passion for music, literature, and science, who have evolved to a level where they no longer kill for sustenance but still retain their innate wildness.

Adam, a reclusive underground musician hiding out in the ruins of contemporary Detroit, despairs about human civilization’s decline and worries about future survival. Eve, who is perhaps 3,000 years old to Adam’s 500, takes a longer view of history and is more optimistic. She leaves her home in the ancient city of Tangier to come to his side.

As blood has been tainted by the zombies (humans), the formerly immortal Adam and Eve must secure uncontaminated blood from hospitals, or they will perish. Eve’s close friend, Elizabethan dramatist and unacknowledged author of Shakespeare’s plays—Christopher Marlowe (John Hurt), is now an elder vampire who provides Eve with hospital blood. Adam gets his supply from Dr. Watson (Jeffrey Wright), a skittish hematologist who provides safe blood at a price.

Adam and Eve’s precarious footing is further threatened by the uninvited arrival of Eve’s carefree and uncontrollable little sister, Ava (Mia Wasikowska). Unlike Adam and Eve, Ava hasn’t yet learned to tame her wilder instincts, and her recklessness concerns Adam.

Drafthouse Films, in conjunction with Cinedigm, released a restored and remastered editions of Ms. 45, legendary director Abel Ferrara’s gritty, gore-filled New York revenge thriller on March 25th.

Synopsis:
From director Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, King of New York), MS. 45 was originally released in 1981 and quickly became a notorious cult favorite, an eye-opening study of a seamy, sticky, pre-Disneyfication New York City. But it had remained hard to find in the years since, until Drafthouse remastered the uncut film in HD from the original negative materials and booked it in theaters. The film follows a mute Garment District seamstress – played by the late model/actress/musician/screenwriter Zoë Lund (then known, at age 18, as Zoë Tamerlis) – who, after falling victim to multiple unspeakable rapes, unleashes a one-woman homicidal rampage against Gotham’s male population.

The fiercely independent auteur feature (originally rated X) was instantly regarded as a uniquely feminist entry in the urban revenge subgenre. In Brad Stevens’ biography Abel Ferrara: The Moral Vision, Ferrara recalls of the film, “It shook people up to see an innocent person like themselves suddenly becoming a wanton murderer.” Combining the rampaging angst of Death Wish and Roman Polanski’s surreal post-traumatic shocker Repulsion, MS. 45 returns from the cult underground over 30 years later to reclaim its title as perhaps the most shocking, complex and empowering vigilante film of the 1980s.
