Horror Stars Assembled at IKEA

Horror Stars Assembled at IKEAHaving had my first IKEA experience several years ago, I can say this... this wonderland of wood and Allen wrenches lives up to its reputation of being the seventh circle of hell (with Walmarts occupying every other circle) perfectly. The Swedish meatballs do little to quell the madness.

That being said, artist Ed Harrington knows this full well and illustrates his own version of a cooler, more horror-friendly version of the mega store on his Instagram page, which is nothing short of fucking awesome.

Below you'll find some examples of Ed's work. This series answers the question: "What would happen if you could buy your favorite horror icon at IKEA?" You'd better follow the instructions, kids! There are no extra pieces! THERE ARE NO EXTRA PIECES!

Synopsis:
Horns, a supernatural thriller driven by fantasy, mystery, and romance, follows Ig Perrish (Radcliffe), the number one suspect for the violent rape and murder of his girlfriend, Merrin (Temple). Hungover from a night of hard drinking, Ig awakens one morning to find horns starting to grow from his own head and soon realizes their power drives people to confess their sins and give in to their most selfish and unspeakable impulses – an effective tool in his quest to discover the true circumstances of his late girlfriend’s tragedy and for exacting revenge on her killer.

Alexandre Aja and Jamie Dornan Explore The Ninth Life of Louis DraxHorns, The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha, and Haute Tension director Alexandre Aja is keeping really busy, and rightfully so as he's talented x10! Word of his latest project just hit the wire, and we have your details right here.

From the Press Release:
Global film and television studio Miramax today announced the production of the psychological thriller The 9th Life of Louis Drax and has cast Jamie Dornan (pictured; Fifty Shades of Grey, The Fall) to star in the film with Alexandre Aja (Horns, The Hills Have Eyes, High Tension) to direct.

Marking his screenwriting debut, Max Minghella has written the feature screenplay based on Liz Jensen’s best-selling novel of the same title. The 9th Life of Louis Drax will be produced by Minghella and Tim Bricknell (The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Breaking and Entering) of Antcolony Films, Shawn Williamson (The Interview, 50/50) of Brightlight Pictures, and Aja. The film will be executive produced by Rosanne Korenberg (Half Nelson, Hard Candy).

Principal photography will commence this October in Vancouver, Canada. Zanne Devine, Miramax’s Executive Vice President, Production and Development, will oversee the project on behalf of the studio. Sierra/Affinity will serve as the international sales agent.

“Tim and I are thrilled this deeply personal project is being brought to fruition with passion and integrity,” said Minghella. “We look forward to collaborating with Alex and Miramax to create a truly original movie that will captivate and surprise audiences.”

Aja added, “Max’s script takes us on a very emotional journey through the deep recesses of the mind and on a suspenseful Hitchcockian ride. I was drawn to the poignant family drama and the supernatural elements and am excited to bring this rich and complex story to life.”

Thomas J. Barrack, Jr., Chairman of Miramax, said, “This spectacular psychological thriller will be a classic Miramax production. There is no better storyteller in the industry than Max Minghella and no more talented director than Alexandre Aja. Together, they will weave a unique and masterfully crafted script with the bold and powerful talent of Jamie Dornan and his accompanying cast!”

The story begins on Louis Drax’s 9th birthday, when he suffers a near-fatal fall. In order to reveal the strange circumstances surrounding the young boy’s accident, Dr. Allan Pascal (Jamie Dornan) is drawn into a thrilling mystery, testing the boundaries of fantasy and reality.

After vigorous bidding, the novel was first optioned in 2004 with plans for the film to be adapted and directed by the late Anthony Minghella (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley). The 9th Life of Louis Drax is a Canada/UK co-production.

More on this one soon!

Grimmfest 2014: Opening Night Gala Lineup Includes Let Us Prey and Suburban GothicGrimmfest 2014 takes place in Manchester, England, from the 2nd-5th October, and the opening night lineup has been announced. It includes two bloody fantastic features, an exclusive short film premiere, and some great special guests.

This year’s Grimmfest Opening Night will be headlined by the English Premiere of Brian O’Malley’s Scottish/Irish horror Let Us Prey starring Liam Cunningham ("Game of Thrones") and Pollyanna McIntosh (The Woman).

Synopsis:
We join Rachel (McIntosh), a rookie cop, as she is about to begin her first nightshift in a neglected police station in a Scottish backwater town... the kind of place where the tide has gone out and stranded a motley bunch of the aimless, the forgotten, the bitter-and-twisted who all think that, really, they deserve to be somewhere else. They all think they’re there by accident and that, with a little luck, life is going to get better. Wrong on both counts. Six (Cunningham) is about to arrive – and all hell will break loose!

Present for the premiere and a Q&A following the film will be the stars and director of Let Us Prey: Pollyanna McIntosh, Liam Cunningham (TBC), Douglas Russell, Hanna Stanbridge, and Brian O’Malley.

Let Us Prey at Grimmfest 2014

Next is the UK premiere of Suburban Gothic, the new feature from Richard Bates, Jr. (Excision) with a fantastic cast featuring Matthew Gray Gubler (500 Days of Summer), Kat Dennings (Thor), Ray Wise ("Twin Peaks"), Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), John Waters, and the Soska Sisters.

Synopsis:
Raymond has a prestigious college degree, but he can't find work. He can channel the paranormal, but chatting with a cute girl mystifies him. Kicked out of his big city apartment, Raymond returns home to his overbearing mother, his racist ex-jock father, and old brutish bully classmates. But when a vengeful ghost terrorizes the small town, the city boy recruits Becca, a badass local bartender, to solve the mystery of the spirit threatening everyone's lives.

Suburban Gothic at Grimmfest 2014

Opening the night will be the world premiere of the "vegan feminist horror" short film The Herd starring Pollyanna McIntosh (Let Us Prey, The Woman), Victoria Broom (Stalled), and Charlotte Hunter ("Emmerdale"). The film was directed and produced by Melanie Light and written by Ed Pope.

Synopsis:
Imprisoned within inhuman squalor with other women, Paula’s existence and human function are abused as a resource by her captors. Escape, on any level, is hopeless as the women are condemned to a life of enforced servitude at the whims of their imprisoners for one reason only – their milk. Enslaved, inseminated, and abused – every facet of their life is violated. At first the premise seems exaggerated and absurd, but it is, in fact, disgusting in its stark normality.

The Herd Short Film at Grimmfest 2014

The full lineup for Grimmfest 2014 will be announced next week. Tickets for the Opening Gala will be available once the full festival lineup has been released.

Grimmfest is now in its sixth year and has quickly become the UK’s premier festival of genre film outside of London. Tickets and passes for the festival are on sale NOW! For more info visit the official Grimmfest website, befriend them on Facebook, and follow them on Twitter (@grimmfest).

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!Eleven years after the final installment in the original series, the Leprechaun franchise was brought back from the dead this week courtesy of Lionsgate and WWE Films, who together released Leprechaun: Origins (review) onto VOD outlets this past Tuesday.

The Warwick Davis incarnation of the titular character had a reign of terror that lasted from 1993 until 2003, the original franchise spanning seven installments that saw the Irish jokester taking a trip to Vegas, being shipped off to space and ridin’ dirty in tha hood on two separate occasions.

Needless to say, the Leprechaun has left a pretty large body count in his wake over the years, and in celebration of the reboot we wanted to shine the green spotlight on some of his most memorable slayings. So today we bring you the seven best kills from the original six Leprechaun films, which are the some of the wildest and most off the wall death scenes in horror franchise history.

Read on for the list, or else the Leprechaun will be pissed!

Sorry. Had to work a rhyme in there somewhere.

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!

7. LEPRECHAUN: BACK 2 THA HOOD – HUMAN BONG
There are few things as utterly joy-inducing as watching the Leprechaun get high, and it’s hard not to appreciate 2003’s Back 2 tha Hood for providing us all with that joy. In the film’s most memorable scene, the little guy takes several big time pulls from a new friend’s bong, which sends him into a fit of laughter. But it’s not long before ole Lep gets the munchies, and by munchies I of course mean a desire to kill. After his stoner pal drops a gold coin on the ground, Leprechaun’s trip turns ugly, and the smoking device becomes a deadly weapon. He impales the dude in the stomach with the bong, before thanking him for the smoke and then bouncing. Always a gentleman, that Leprechaun.

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!

6. LEPRECHAUN 4 – PENIS ENLARGEMENT
If there’s anything that makes the Leprechaun superior to most of the other big franchise icons it’s that he’s a magical little bastard, capable of doing things that guys like Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers simply cannot. Take, for example, Leprechaun 4, where the Irish demon bursts out of a dude’s dick. Okay, so I suppose Freddy could do that if he wanted to, but even he doesn’t play as dirty as the Leprechaun does. In the fourth installment of the series, set in outer space, Leprechaun is literally reborn out of a man’s private parts, materializing from the dude’s groin just as he’s about to make sweet love to his lady friend. The scene isn’t nearly as graphic as you’d hope or expect it to be, but the mere suggestion of what’s happening is more than enough to make it one of the franchise’s most memorable kills.

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!

5. LEPRECHAUN – POGO STICK OF DOOM
The Leprechaun’s original 1993 outing is not nearly as whacky as the subsequent installments in the series, and the body count is pretty damn low, with only one kill scene that really stands out. I’m of course referring to the pawn shop owner’s demise by pogo stick, wherein the wrinkle-faced little monster uses the children’s toy as a sort of jackhammer, repeatedly jumping down on the man’s body and piercing his internal organs with the business end of the stick – all while singing a catchy limerick. No horror villain has more fun doing what he does than the Leprechaun, and he proved that right off the bat with this early franchise kill scene. I guess you could say he hopped right into our hearts with this one, just as he hopped right into his victim’s!

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!

4. LEPRECHAUN 3 – SEX ROBOT
There’s no better example of how whacky the franchise ended up getting than this bizarre kill scene from Leprechaun 3, which is hands down one of the most off the wall moments in the entire series. Several times throughout the franchise, the Leprechaun has magically made sexy women appear to seduce men he wants to kill, and in the Vegas-set third installment, he has a topless chick literally emerge from the horny casino owner’s television set. Just as things are starting to get hot and heavy, the woman transforms into a killer robot – with massive human breasts still intact, of course – and puts a little spark in the old man’s love life by electrocuting him to death. Long before The Ring taught us the same lesson, Leprechaun 3 tried to warn us; don’t ever trust women that crawl out of your TV!

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!

3. LEPRECHAUN 2 – LAWNMOWER BOOBS
Another one of the Leprechaun’s devious, sexually-charged illusions was on display in 1994’s first sequel, which was the film where he was on the hunt for the perfect bride. One of the first victims in the movie is a young man who attempts to seduce the Leprechaun’s chosen bride Bridget, incurring the wrath of her pint-sized husband-to-be in the process. In retaliation, Leprechaun uses his magic to trick the man into thinking Bridget is DTF, fooling him into believing that she’s standing topless in front of him, just waiting for his lovin’. In reality, Bridget’s boobs were actually the spinning blades of a lawnmower’s underside, the fantasy breasts turning the man’s face into a freshly sliced masterpiece. Now that’s just cruel.

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!

2. LEPRECHAUN 2 – POT (OF GOLD) BELLY
‘Be careful what you wish for’ is a common theme throughout the Leprechaun films, with the wishes of characters often being granted in ways that they didn’t quite intend them to be. In Leprechaun 2, for example, a greedy character wishes for an entire pot of gold, and the Leprechaun gladly makes that wish come true. While at first the man experiences excruciating stomach pain, he soon realizes that the pot of gold is actually materializing in his stomach, distending his belly like the world’s worst food baby. His second wish? For the pot of gold to be removed, which the Leprechaun again grants – using his blade-like nails to tear open the man’s stomach and reclaim his gold. And that’s what greed will do to ya, kiddies!

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!

1. LEPRECHAUN 3 – STRETCHED TO THE LIMIT
I couldn’t think of a better Leprechaun kill scene to top the list than Caroline Williams’ epic death in the third installment, which saw yet another wish being granted in a horrifying fashion. Best known for her role as Stretch in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Williams played Vegas casino employee Loretta in Leprechaun 3 and her wish was simple enough; to be young and beautiful again. To grant her wish, the Leprechaun does some magical Botox and plastic surgery work on poor sweet Loretta, blowing up her lips, boobs and rear end to such an extent that her body eventually explodes into thousands of tiny little pieces. Not sure that Williams would consider it one of her finest career moments, but the scene is definitely a shining example of how much fun the Leprechaun movies were!

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!

Don’t forget; Lionsgate releases Leprechaun: The Complete Movie Collection on Blu-ray September 30th, collecting together all six original films and the brand new Leprechaun: Origins. That’s the whole pot of gore in one collection, which will allow you to relive these and many other whacky moments from the franchise!

Fantastic Fest 2014 kicks off September 18, and the second wave of films has been announced. Purgatory, Redeemer, Whispers Behind the Wall, Necrophobia 3D, Over Your Dead Body, and more are on the menu!

From the Press Release:
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Fantastic Fest is excited to announce the second wave of events, special guests, and film programming. Fantastic Fest 2014 takes place September 18-25th in Austin, Texas, at the newly reopened Alamo South Lamar and Highball.

Get ready to be blown away by Lionsgate's latest action-packed thriller, JOHN WICK starring Keanu Reeves, with a red carpet gala screening with Reeves and directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski in attendance. JOHN WICK is the story of a former ex-hitman who comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that took everything from him. With New York City as his bullet-riddled playground, JOHN WICK (Keanu Reeves) is a fresh and stylized take on the "assassin genre." Also starring in JOHN WICK are Willem Dafoe and Adrianne Palicki.

We are also excited to announce that we are closing the festival with the red carpet US premiere of Dan Gilroy's highly anticipated NIGHTCRAWLER, a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Written and directed by Dan Gilroy, who will be in attendance at the festival, NIGHTCRAWLER stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Also starring in NIGHTCRAWLER are Bill Paxton, Rene Russo, and Riz Ahmed.

For its 10th anniversary, Fantastic Fest is also going all out with celebratory events and special programming, including:

Fantastic Debates will pack a serious punch this year. Fantastic Fest's long-running showcase of verbal/physical combat is being amped up by a call to battle from Matt Mason, Chief Content Officer for BitTorrent, Inc. Mason is placing an open call to all fighters to tackle the debate of whether BitTorrent.com is a valuable tool for creative artists or a playground for theft. In addition to the torrent debate, there will be a full undercard settling a range of topics with right hooks and sharp tongues alike.

"This is the first Fantastic Debate in which we have a debater/fighter issuing an open challenge to anyone willing to step into the ring. It's a bold move and one I'm happy not to take on: Matt Mason can fight," said Tim League, CEO/Founder of Alamo Drafthouse & Fantastic Fest. "On the film front, we're really excited to bring Keanu back and welcome Dan Gilroy to Fantastic Fest for the first time with his stunning directorial debut."

Fantastic Fest also marks an important milestone for the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain with the grand reopening of its flagship destination at South Lamar and the all-new Highball. Under construction for the past two years, the new theaters boast three new screens (9 total), and completely rebuilt Highball bar, and 7 custom-designed karaoke rooms that are sure to melt the mind.

Below is the second lineup of programming at this year's festival. Note that several are more thriller than horror, but we're including them since we know many of you will be attending the Fest and want to know everything that's being offered.

If it's Halloween... It Must Be Saw

If it's Halloween... It Must Be SawThere was a time when the Saw franchise ruled the box office every Halloween. Truth be told, I kind of miss those days. In any event, while we all wait patiently for Lionsgate to announce what they're doing with the franchise, they have a special treat in store for fans.

From The Press Release
This Halloween, Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the theatrical release of SAW, the film that kicked off the most successful horror franchise in history, by bringing it back to theaters nationwide for one week only.

The film will open on Friday, October 31st, with select screenings beginning Thursday night, October 30th. The seven SAW films grossed $874 million at the box office worldwide and were hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “Most Successful Horror Franchise” of all time.

“The launch of SAW was a signature event in Lionsgate’s history, establishing our first franchise and paving the way for our growth into a global studio,” said Lionsgate President of Acquisitions & Co-Productions Jason Constantine. “We are excited for our fans to revisit the twisted magic that first blew their minds on Halloween 2004.”

“As part of SAW’s 10th anniversary, we’re thrilled to give new fans and audiences the opportunity to experience this film on the big screen for the very first time,” added SAW’s producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg.

SAW was the first collaboration for co-creators James Wan, who directed the film, and Leigh Whannell, who wrote the screenplay. Together, they also created the successful INSIDIOUS franchise, and Wan has gone on to direct such high-profile films as THE CONJURING and the upcoming FAST & FURIOUS 7.

Directed by Wan from a script penned by Whannell, SAW is a psychological thriller focusing on two men who wake up in a secure lair of a serial killer with a dead body lying between them. The killer, nicknamed “Jigsaw,” leaves them tape recorded messages with details of how to make it out alive. The only way for one man to make it out alive is to do the unthinkable. The two men desperately try to find a way out, while also trying to figure out who's behind their kidnapping. The film, which was released over Halloween weekend on October 29, 2004, was produced by Gregg Hoffman, Oren Koules, and Mark Burg.

In the interim, if you need to play catch-up, there's also the Saw box set coming out September 23rd, which is insanely cheap for all seven flims. Order that below from the EvilShop.

  • Original Godzilla Getting 4K Restoration

Original Godzilla Getting 4K RestorationThis news warms my heart like a newly delivered basket of puppies and kittens. The mother of all Kaiju movies, 1954's Godzilla, or Gojira for you purists out there, is getting itself a remastering in Japan for the ages! Even cooler? The sequels are getting some love too!

According to Yahoo! Movies, at a humble Tokyo laboratory the original 1954 black-and-white film is stomping back with a digital makeover that delivers four times the image quality of high definition.

The effort with "4K" technology is carefully removing scratches and discoloration from the films and also unearthing hidden information on the reel-to-reel. Experts say the chemical reactions used to make old movies stored far greater detail than was visible with the limited projection technology of the era, as well as with subsequent digital updates. If all the hidden information of a reel-to-reel is ever brought out, quality would approximate 8K, they say.

Only one minute from the original film and from each of the sequels has been turned into 4K so far, but the results are stunning enough.

Faded, blurry, yellowing footage of the radiation-breathing creature that emerged from the Pacific after atomic-bomb testing turns sharp, clear, and vivid. It almost looks like state-of-the-art animation. "It's better than the original," said Toshifumi Shimizu of Tokyo Laboratory Co., the studio that undertook the painstaking effort. "You can feel the impact of the bodies banging into each other under the suits," he said in an interview Wednesday with The Associated Press.

The details of the cityscape models, the bumpy skin of Godzilla, and the metallic shine of the robots are revealed as they once were. The craftsmen at the lab made a point to keep visible the wires from which the flying monsters hung. The goal was to stay true to the intention of the original.

In turning Godzilla films into 4K, each frame of the reel-to-reel is scanned by a special machine. Each frame is then examined for blotches and other damage that has crept in over the last 60 years. Any problems with a frame are fixed on a computer, one by one, by a film-processing specialist.

We're still a long way off from having 4K tech readily available at home (unless you wanna shell out for Sony's 85-inch model that sells for $25,000.00), but it's nice to know that once it is affordable, Big G will be there waiting!

Kevin Bacon Dreaming of Being in Tremors Reboot

Kevin Bacon Dreaming of Being in Tremors RebootSounds like Kevin Bacon is really wanting to saddle up and reprise his role of Valentine McKee from the 1990 classic Tremors. How do we know this? Well, we heard it straight from the horse's mouth, and now you can too!

During a fan interview on The Huffington Post, Bacon was questioned about the cult favorite hit. His answer was pretty surprising. "I have a real dream right now. I want to reboot [Tremors]," says Bacon of the film which is getting the reboot treatment from Don Michael Paul (Lake Placid: The Final Chapter).

Given his next comments we can only assume that he wants to reprise his role and NOT reboot the film as a director or what not. "To see the character 25 years down the line. Seeing what that guy may have become. When I started thinking about this, I hadn't seen the movie in 25 years so I went back and watched it recently. I was pleasantly surprised. It was still really cool."

Check out the entire interview below.

As reported earlier, the film will be more of a sequel than a complete remake with Michael Gross reprising the role of monster-killer Burt Gummer. Gross has to date appeared in every film in the franchise and even the short-lived TV series it spawned.

The new film, tentatively titled Tremors 5, is currently casting for a September kick-off in South Africa.

    More as we learn it.

The Gasp Menagerie: 4-Foot Shark Eaten In One Bite! You're gonna need a bigger shark... This YouTube video shows something kind of terrifying. By kind of, I mean get a diaper because you're probably gonna leak a little.

While fishing for sharks off the coast of Florida, these men caught something incredible on video. That something is a large example of the species known as the goliath grouper, a massive fish that, as we can see here, proves that sharks aren't the top of the food chain.

In one gulp, the adolescent black tip shark, around four feet in length, is swallowed whole by the goliath. Like it was a minnow. Since the goliath can come close to 700 pounds, the same size as a bengal tiger, this shouldn't be a surprise... but it definitely reinforces my notion to NEVER EVER SWIM IN THE OCEAN. EVER.

You can find out more about the very endangered goliath grouper here and then watch the video below!
