SXSW 2012 Exclusive Interview: Irish Filmmaker Lorcan Finnegan Discusses Foxes

In Lorcan Finnegan's latest short film Foxes, the Irish filmmaker plays with the audience's perceptions as we follow a young couple (Marie Ruane and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) who are trapped in a remote estate of empty houses that's haunted by sinister shrieking foxes from a distance.

But as they're beckoned from their isolation into a twilight world, they soon find themselves faced with the possibility of paranormal entities, or perhaps it's just their sanity slipping away.

Dread Central had the opportunity to catch up with Finnegan from London during the 2012 SXSW Film Festival and learned more about the up-and-coming filmmaker and his latest short and heard his thoughts on the power of visual storytelling as well what's up next for him.

Check out our interview with Finnegan below, and look for more on Foxes and the remainder of our SXSW coverage coming soon!

Dread Central: Since this is somewhat of an introduction, let's begin with talking about how your career started and hear more about your projects before Foxes.

Lorcan Finnegan: Well, I started off in graphic design and then I moved into motion design work; I moved to London and started working for a comedy production company called Zeppotron that's run by Charlie Brooker. So I started editing stuff there and then eventually went on to shooting and writing stuff for them, too; then in 2004 I moved back to Dublin and set up Lovely Productions, which is my own production company.

We started off by doing a series of short films as a TV series, like 13, 30-minute episodes with each movie under five minutes, and that fueled the fire in me to want to make my own shorts. I submitted a few scripts to the film board for financing and the first script they chose was Changes, which was about two caterpillars in love but when they hatch out of their cocoons and become butterflies, it turns out the girl becomes a bitch and dumps the guy butterfly.

I did a bunch more projects after that - commercials, shorts, music videos - and then we applied to the Irish Film Board to do Foxes and luckily, we were approved. We were pretty lucky really.

But to backtrack a little, this writer Garret Shanley and I hooked up about four years ago now to work on a feature film project, but our film didn't get funded. So even though that didn't work out, we started working on other things and the similarities between our tastes in stories began to become apparent. And through all our working together, there was one theme that kept coming into the mix and it was this idea of a clash between humans and nature and how humans are wild but we try not to be.

Dread Central: I definitely see the human/animal aspect, but I would love to hear more about the setting for this short because it evoked a lot of creepy atmosphere that I thought really elevated the short.

Lorcan Finnegan: Oh thanks! Yeah, in Ireland there are these places called 'ghost estates' that are abandoned properties funded by the government in areas that really didn't need any houses built. But then once everything clashed, similar to what happened there in the States, the government was left with all of these houses in the middle of nowhere that they can't sell because they are unsafe to live in.

FOXES - Teaser from LORCAN FINNEGAN on Vimeo.

See, once the money stopped coming in, the builders and contractors all left the country so all that was left in the wake of this were these ghost estates. There's no maintenance there either so everything is really overgrown to the point where grass is coming through the streets and trees are bursting through walls; it was like nature reclaimed the property. So I thought that would be a great place to shoot and the builder gave us three of the show houses to shoot in so we painted and decorated those up and that's how we got the location for Foxes. We really had the whole ghost estate to ourselves which was really cool.

But we had always talked about shooting something in these ghost estates and at the time, Garret had these foxes in the back of his house that kept screaming all night. Have you heard a fox's mating call? It's unreal; it's actually where the 'banshee' came from because people wouldn't know what the screaming from the woods really was so the idea of this wild woman was born from that; but in reality, it was the fox mating call they were hearing.

So all these foxes were in his backyard that would just be screaming all night and he wrote a short story on his blog about it; it was from a first-person perspective of this guy telling a story to two others in a pub and he's telling them about what happened to his two friends on the ghost estate. When I read it on his blog, I knew it would make for a great movie so then converted it into a script and so now we're following this couple in their 30's who live in the ghost estate and have to deal with these foxes.

We used two live foxes from an animal shelter for the short and they had a handler that would work with them on these lines so that was really great to get the real thing for a short film; we had to use some CG foxes, too, so hopefully they're photorealistic enough (laughs).

Dread Central: Well, Foxes certainly has a look to it, and that 'look' kind of spills over a bit into the casting I suspect; can you talk about your cast and how you found them?

Lorcan Finnegan: I had originally put together a look book when we first started working on Foxes; I'm very much into the visual side of storytelling- how the lines play within the camera and how camera movement can change the viewers' interpretation of what's happening before them. So I wanted to really put together something visually that would manipulate your fears and emotions a bit and that's why the atmosphere- oh and sound design too- was so important to me.

And the look of the cast was definitely important as well; the first thing I had to do was find my female lead; she had to resemble a fox too and look a bit odd and pale too that's also sort of angelic. So we had a brilliant casting director, Maureen Hughes, who showed me hundreds of people and then we had auditions the very first person I saw was Marie who ended up being our lead. I even went to London to do more casting but it always came back to her so I knew she'd be perfect.

But I actually found our lead male in London; he's actually from Ireland but he's a working theater actor in London right now so the trip was definitely worth it in that respect (laughs).

Dread Central: So what do you have planned for future projects then?

Lorcan Finnegan: Well, Foxes will be playing the Tribeca Film Festival this April so that's pretty exciting. But we always intended Foxes to be a movie in the cinema so we are working on something bigger but really, we made this so we could do all kinds of features in the future and the one we're working on right now that is set in the same story world as Foxes where weird things can happen but it's more psychological horror.

There are no monsters, not a lot of blood; those are the kinds of movies I'm into, not really the gore fest-type movies. I like a movie that leaves you thinking for a long time after you've seen it, something unsettling that can stick with you for a while. Those are the stories I like to tell.

For more information be sure to check out the official Foxes website or follow Finnegan for the latest updates on this and future projects on Twitter.

New Clips Fashioned from The Wicker Tree

We're almost there, kids! The release of The Wicker Tree (review here) is right around the corner and we've got a trippy new clip and even a making-of for you right here.

From the Press Release
On April 24th, Anchor Bay Entertainment, the leading distributor in classic and contemporary horror films, releases Anchor Bay Films’ highly anticipated follow-up The Wicker Tree on Blu-ray™ and DVD. Set in the same universe as the 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man starring Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward, the film is written and directed by the original helmer, Robin Hardy, who also reunited with the original producer Peter Snell and venerable UK production company British Lion to bring a chilling new vision of this classic story to 21st century audiences, after a theatrical run. SRP is $29.99 for the Blu-ray™ and $26.98 for the DVD.

Based on Hardy’s acclaimed 2006 novel “Cowboys for Christ,” The Wicker Tree tells the story of Texas-based singer Beth Boothby (newcomer Brittania Nicol) and her friend Steve Thomson (Henry Garrett, “The Bill,” “Skins”), two born-again Christians who come to Scotland to spread the gospel. When their initial efforts are met with disdain and disinterest, they find comfort in an invitation to sing in Tressock, the border fiefdom owned by Sir Lachlan Morrison (Graham McTavish, Rambo, the upcoming The Hobbit films).

However, Beth’s and Steve’s message of personal chastity quickly comes into direct conflict with Tressock’s sexual and religious practices, drawing upon ancient Celtic beliefs and rituals. Temptations begin to challenge Beth and Steve – with the stakes no less than their very lives and souls...

Lee, who played the mysterious Lord Summerisle in the original (in a career that includes Count Dracula and the Frankenstein monster in the classic Hammer films, Count Dooku in Star Wars Episodes II & III, and Saruman in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as the upcoming pair of films based on The Hobbit), returns again in a dramatic cameo. Rounding out the cast are Jacqueline Leonard (“Holby City,” “The Bill”) as Lady Delia Morrison, Clive Russell (Sherlock Holmes, The 13th Warrior) as Beame, James Mapes (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Conversations with God) as Reverend Moriarty and Honeysuckle Weeks (“Foyle’s War” and numerous other UK TV projects) as Lolly.

Bonus features on The Wicker Tree Blu-ray™ and DVD include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes and the theatrical trailer.

New Edition of Dracula Reveals Bram Stoker's Original Publishing Contract

New Edition of Dracula Reveals Bram Stoker's Original Publishing ContractWe can't get enough of our vampires. Whether you're into the blood-dripping fangs of Stake Land; the slutty, sultry ones from "True Blood" or the sparkly kind from Twilight, we all love our vamps. Now there's new info on how Bram Stoker got the whole thing going.

A new version of Dracula will soon be released and this one will contain images and details from Stoker's actual 1897 publishing deal. Apparently, aside from being able to spin a wicked vampire tale, Stoker was pretty savvy at the bargaining table as well. The new book reveals that Stoker landed a deal which granted him 20 percent royalties on Dracula. Anyone who's in the publishing business will tell you that's one helluva deal…about double what an author could get by today's standards. Although he never practiced law, Stoker studied it, giving himself the skills to work out this honey of a deal.

In an article published in The Independent, Nick Robinson, chairman Constable & Robinson, publishers of the new edition of Dracula, said "Stoker wrote the contract himself, which, from a publisher's point of view, is rather extraordinary. The terms – roughly 20 percent royalties – are, again from a publisher's point of view, pretty tough. But he clearly knew how to frame a contract and was able to dictate terms." Bazinga!

However Stoker had less luck trying to swing a deal stateside, struggling with copyright laws that required serialization of work before going into effect. In the same article in The Independent, Bram Stoker's great-grand-nephew, Dacre Stoker, explained, "The book wasn't published in America until 1899. However, Dracula was serialized in American newspapers for a couple of years because there were very strange copyright laws in the US that required authors to serialize their work prior to them publishing. He then signed a contract with the publishers Doubleday, but they still won't reveal the contract to this day. It's one of those mysteries: why did Bram lose the copyright to the book? The party line is he apparently didn't fulfill all the requirements, but he certainly didn't have all the rights he should have had."

Obviously these odd dealings didn't sit well with Stoker, but it seems he was even less a fan of agents. The Independent quotes an interview with Stoker given around the time of the initial publishing of Dracula where he said, "Some men nowadays are making 10,000 a year by their novels, and it seems hardly fair that they should pay 10 or 5 per cent of this great sum to a middle man. By a dozen letters or so in the course of the year they could settle all their literary business on their own account." And Hollywood shuddered.

Deal to Resurrect Terra Nova on Netflix Extinct

"Terra Nova" fans, we've got bad news for you. It looks like a potential deal between 20th Century Fox TV and Netflix to bring back the show is as dead as... well... the dinosaurs.

The Fox Network cancelled "Terra Nova" after it opened with much fanfare last fall, and now it looks like the dino-themed drama may be headed the way of the La Brea Tar Pits and complete extinction. Apparently it was always a long-shot for the 20th Century Fox/Netflix deal to happen as creating episodes of "Terra Nova" is an elaborate production with lots of video F/X.

Even with Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin listed among the executive producers, "Terra Nova" could not draw enough viewers for the Fox Network to justify renewing the show considering the high costs. However, dino-fans, don't lose hope. Fox has had a knack for bringing series back from the dead such as "Family Guy," "Futurama" and, most recently, "Arrested Development" in a deal with Netflix.

New Info and Images from Dark Horse Comics Senior Managing Editor Scott Allie

New Info and Images from Dark Horse Comics Senior Managing Editor Scott AllieScott Allie is a busy man. Aside from his usual responsibilities as the senior managing editor at Dark Horse Comics, he's taken on new writing endeavors, and this weekend he finds himself as a guest of honor at the World Horror Convention (March 30-April 1) in Salt Lake City.

Allie has been named Editor Guest of Honor for the 2012 World Horror Convention. He joins his partner in crime, Mike Mignola, who will also be in attendance. Mignola is Artist Guest of Honor for 2012 (Sherrilyn Kenyon is Author Guest of Honor this year). This event also features the Horror Writers Association Bram Stoker Award ceremony, for which Dark Horse Comics has been nominated in multiple categories.

Allie has recently returned to the writer's chair, creating stories for new issues of B.P.R.D. and Buffy the Vampire Slayer with the first issue of B.P.R.D. releasing this week (March 28) and Buffy dropping next Wednesday (April 4). Amongst all this business, Allie had a chance to sit down and talk with Dread Central to get our readers caught up on the goings-on at Dark Horse Comics and the World Horror Convention.

"I think we're on a few panels together," Allie said, discussing his participation in this weekend's World Horror Convention with Mike Mignola. "He's got a spotlight panel on him, and I'm doing some writing and art workshops so I hope there are some aspiring cartoonists in Salt Lake City or I'll be awful lonely. I think they also have me doing some pitch sessions, a panel on Buffy with Buffy novelist Alice Henderson, and a panel on humor in horror, which is nice timing because that was the theme of Orycon last year in Portland, where I was also guest of honor. So I've done a lot of thinking on the topic."

Allie discussed the desire to take a more horror-minded approach to some of his upcoming work. "Mike (Mignola) and I wanted to do more horror stories," Allie said, discussing the new B.P.R.D. issue. "The stories that (John) Arcudi is focused on in the regular stories tend to be more action adventure, which kind of works better in comics, particularly in comics where the main characters have to survive everything they confront. Not that we're above killing our main characters once in a while, but you can't do it every story arc. In doing this story, we initially set out to deal with the vampire history of the Hellboy world, but then it took some detours, with some more Lovecraftian stuff. A couple of agents go to investigate a town that's suddenly been vacated after a strange mist has settled in. They encounter a professorial type who's here investigating the history of vampires and can't explain how the mist connects to the vampires. And things go badly from there."

Allie's new work on the Buffy series follows along with the abortion story arc. "After Buffy decided to terminate her pregnancy, she realized she was not in fact pregnant, but actually a robot," Allie said. "My story sees her sort of reeling from her recent experience, while trying to figure out what happened to her real body. Buffy has been on the outs with her fellow Slayers ever since she destroyed the connection between the earth and the magical realms. One of those Slayers has a particular plan in mind that Buffy has to deal with in this arc."

Discussing the horror aspects of the upcoming comics, Allie dished some info. "Buffy's not really all about the horror, but I think we get into some nicely dark emotional places. She's been to a bad place, and that's what I love about horror fiction. But with the B.P.R.D. stuff, Pickens County and subsequent Transformation of JH O'Donnell one-shot, we're really doing traditional horror, more so than I think you normally get in comics. B.P.R.D. does sort of work like 'X-Files,' but with these side projects that Mike and I are doing, it's nice in that it's more like the non-mythology episodes of 'X-Files'. And it's the agents that change from story to story, as well as the investigation itself."

Synopsis of Upcoming Dark Horse Comics
B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Pickens County Horror, written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, art by Jason Latour and Dave Stewart, covers by Becky Cloonan. Two agents are sent to North Carolina to investigate a town that's become a ghost town practically overnight. They arrive to find a field of mushrooms emanating a mysterious gas. They're given shelter by a doddering old professor who's there to interview the family of vampires who live in the hills and have for years preyed upon the town. What the vampires have to do with the gas and the mushrooms is not immediately apparent, but then one of the agents turns into a gelatinous vampire, and everything goes to hell.

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Transformation of JH O'Donnell, written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, art by Max Fiumara and Dave Stewart. The B.P.R.D.'s resident expert on pre-human civilization has suffered dementia since his first appearance in the comics, but it turns out it all started during a trip with Hellboy to retrieve rare books from the library of a recently deceased necromancer in the 1980s. What exactly happened that night is unclear, since little sense can be made of what O'Donnell's had to say about it, but ever since that night, he's been able to quote passages from books that have been lost for hundreds of years.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #8-#10, written by Scott Allie and Andrew Chambliss, art by Cliff Richards, covers by Phil Noto. Buffy's pregnancy scare comes to an end when she discovers she's actually a Buffy-bot. Now the robot version of Buffy must team with Spike to recover her real body, with the help of Andrew Wells, who's responsible for the whole situation. Season 8's Rogue Slayer Simone returns to center stage as well.

"COPPING SQUID"
by Michael Shea

Ricky Deuce, twenty-eight and three years sober, was the night clerk at Mahmoud’s Mom and Pop Market. He was a small, leanly muscled guy, and as he sat there, the darkness outside deepening toward midnight, his tight little Irish face looked pleased with where he was. Behind Ricky on his stool, the whole wall was bottles of every kind of Hard known to man.

This job was easy money—a sit-down after his day forklifting at the warehouse. He already owned an awesomely restored ’64 Mustang and had near ten K saved, and by rights he ought to be casting around for where he might take off to next. But the fact was, he got a kick out of clerking here till two a.m. each night.

A kick that was not powder nor pill nor smoke nor booze, that was not needing any of them, especially not booze, which could shine and glint in its bottles and surround him all night long, and he not give a shit. He never got tired of sitting here immune, savoring the unadorned adventure of being alive.

Not that the job lacked irritants. There were obnoxious clientele, and these preponderated toward the deep of night.

Ricky thought he heard one even now.

Single cars shushed past outside, long silences falling between, and a scuffy tread advanced along the sidewalk. A purposeful tread that nonetheless staggered now and then. It reminded Ricky that he was It, the only island of comfort and light for a half a mile in all directions, in a big city, in the dead of night.

Synopsis
In the year 1752 Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England, to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass, and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet — or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor are Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.
