DELIVER US FROM EVIL is a chilling story inspired by the actual accounts of New York Police Department (NYPD) Sergeant Ralph Sarchie (played by Eric Bana, Lone Survivor), who teams up with Father Mendoza (played by Edgar Ramírez, Zero Dark Thirty) to investigate a series of strange events that are taking over and terrorizing their city. Olivia Munn (Magic Mike) co-stars as Sarchie’s wife, and Joel McHale (“The Soup”) co-stars as Sarchie’s NYPD partner.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”) and directed by Scott Derrickson, the DELIVER US FROM EVIL Blu-ray and DVD give fans bone-chilling bonus materials, including a director’s commentary as well as an all-new featurette, “Illuminating Evil: Making Deliver Us from Evil,” which explores how writer/director Derrickson collaborated with Sarchie on the film. The Blu-ray includes three exclusive featurettes: “Deliver Us from Demons,” which gives an all-access pass to the production team’s approach to creating a realistic and frightening demonic presence in the film; “The Two Sergeants,” which highlights the collaboration process between Ralph Sarchie and Eric Bana; and “The Demon Detective,” which offers fans an intimate interview with Sarchie as he recounts some of his more harrowing experiences in the field of demonology.

Synopsis

When he uncovers that the crimes are of supernatural origins, he must join forces with an unconventional priest (Ramírez), schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are taking over and terrorizing their city. Filled with action and thrilling suspense, the film is inspired by the book which details Sarchie’s bone-chilling real-life cases.

Blumhouse Bringing Son of Sam to TVBlumhouse Productions is moving from the big screen to the small for its latest project, which is based on Son of Sam killer David Berkowitz. Read on for the first details right here.

Deadline is reporting that Jason Blum’s production company is returning to the longform arena with another New York period piece based on a true story: miniseries "Son of Sam." Blumhouse will develop the six-hour mini with Fox TV Studios ("The Killing").

Written by Steven Katz ("The Knick,""From the Earth to the Moon"), "Son of Sam" juxtaposes David Richard Berkowitz’s murder confession of Satan worship and human sacrifice with the actual police investigation of December 1975-1977. For almost two years, the Son of Sam terrorized New York City, killing six people while eluding a massive manhunt and taunting the police with brazen letters. The spree finally came to an end in August 1977 when Berkowitz was arrested and confessed to the crimes, claiming he was possessed by demons.

In the 1990s, while serving six life sentences, he recanted part of his original confession, insisting that he was part of of a Satanic cult with fellow members carrying out some of the killings, but those claims were never substantiated. On screen, the case was the focus of Spike Lee’s 1999 movie Summer of Sam and the 1985 CBS movie Out of the Darkness. Blum and CAA-repped Katz executive produce the mini with Dan Halsted of Manage-ment (Nixon). Blumhouse’s head of television Jessica Rhoades co-exec produces.

Trailer Showcases Halloween HellThe trailer for Edward Hunt's (1981's Bloody Birthday) long-awaited return to the horror genre, Halloween Hell, has arrived; and we have every psychotic pixel of it right here for your perusal. Dig it!

    From the Press Release
HALLOWEEN HELL focuses on a devil doll that is rumored to have been carved out of lava that came straight from Hell. It provides a home for a demon that has also come straight from Hell.

This devil doll is the star of a pay-per-view reality TV show that is hosted by a psycho who believes that he is Count Dracula.

Six young adventurers (three male and three female) are offered $100,000 to spend all of Halloween locked in a room with the devil doll, who has reportedly caused the deaths or suicides of over fifty people during the last two centuries, always on the Halloween nights when there is a full moon.

THERE IS A FULL MOON ON THE HALLOWEEN WHEN THIS REALITY TV SHOW IS HAPPENING.

The room that contains the adventurers and the devil doll has many surveillance cameras that broadcast whatever happens to the pay-per-view audience, who also have the option of betting on which horrific outcomes might occur in that room.

From its beginning to its very end, HALLOWEEN HELL is full of suspense, surprises, shocks, scares, and sexy situations as the devil doll lives up to its very deserved reputation of being the home of a demon from Hell. A love story evolves between two of the adventurers and eventually leads to a happy ending in contrast to the abundant horror, blood, killings, and jeopardy of the movie’s fast-paced thrilling surface.

Exclusive: Eliza Dushku Talks The Scribbler From the Set!

Excl: Eliza Dushku Talks The Scribbler From the Set!This writer hit the Los Angeles set of director John Suits’ feature The Scribbler back in June of 2012 and while there sat down with actress Eliza Dushku to get the skinny on her character. Read on.

Releasing September 19th through XLrator Media, the sci-fi action-thriller is an adaptation of the 2006 Image Comics graphic novel of the same name. Directed by John Suits and scripted by Daniel Schaffer, the production at the time was shooting day eighteen of twenty at the Linda Vista Community Hospital in downtown L.A.

Starring Katie Cassidy (“Supernatural”, A Nightmare on Elm Street), Garret Dillahunt (The Last House on the Left), Michelle Trachtenberg (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), Eliza Dushku (Wrong Turn, Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), Gina Gershon (Killer Joe), Michael Imperioli (The Lovely Bones), Billy Campbell (“The Killing”), Sasha Grey (The Girlfriend Experience) and Ashlynn Yennie (The Human Centipede), The Scribbler centers on Suki (Cassidy), a young woman confronting her destructive mental illness.

Sitting down with Dushku, who’s primarily known to genre fans for her turn as the character of ‘Faith’ in the Joss Whedon cult shows “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”, as well as for her role of ‘Echo’ on the Whedon television series “Dollhouse”, the actress opened on her character of ‘Jennifer Silk’ in .

“She’s a criminal psychologist,” said Dushku, whose hair was coiffed in a 1940’s do for the part, as we sat in a drafty sub-level corridor of the hospital.

Of the script, “I think the audience enters the film with her, with Jennifer as the outsider coming into the crazy,” stated the actress, “and I really enjoyed the parts of the script that look at that idea of what is considered ‘crazy’ in our society today, and what are the parts of ourselves that we try to conform (to society); what is allowed by society, what society tries to tear out of us, what is considered ‘okay,’ and what is considered ‘crazy.’ I think Jennifer really starts to identify these things and starts to understand, whereas Michael Imperioli’s character just tries to beat Suki down, and to beat out all of her feelings and experiences that have shaped her. Jennifer really comes to understand in a way that few could understand, where all of these pieces have come from.”

“The script has a lot of 'Dollhouse' parallels I feel like,” continued Dushku of The Scribbler, “where Suki is the sum of all of these parts, and all of these people in reality are very real to her and very important, in making up who she is, and her survival mechanisms. I think Jennifer really relates to her, in whatever messed up way that is, in how she’s experienced her own life. They have an affinity for one another.”

With Dushku having historically played strong female roles, we asked her if there were any similarities in the film.

“Jennifer is a bad-ass and a ball-buster and likes to cut through the shit and get down to really what’s going on,” said Dushku. “So when we see her come in, she’s that way, but she’s also clearly afflicted with her own issues and frustrated with the narrow-mindedness of the staff in the way that they approach these ‘crazy’ people. When she meets Suki, I think we see both sides of Silk. With Suki she absolutely responds to her, and there is a softness that comes through with Silk in that way. I think because the script is based on a graphic novel, we are playing a little bit with the ‘hyper-reality’ and noir aspects (of the source material). Jennifer kind of dresses and looks like she’s from the 40’s, but at the same time it’s very contemporary, so we are playing with those subtleties.”

As for shooting at Linda Vista, an often-used location long rumored to be haunted, “On the first day there were rumblings from the cast and crew about seeing things, in the incinerator downstairs and Room 342, which has all kinds of myths and legends surrounding it, but to me it’s just a beautiful set, and I’m impressed with it and everyone on this production,” she stated. “And as a producer on 'Dollhouse' I’m amazed how they are delivering such excellent production value and quality on such a small budget.”

For more on The Scribbler, see our previous exclusive chat with co-star Ashlynn Yennie.

XLrator Media’s sci-fi action-thriller The Scribbler is set to open September 19th.

    Synopsis
THE SCRIBBLER follows Suki (Katie Cassidy), a young woman confronting her destructive mental illness using "The Siamese Burn," an experimental machine designed to eliminate multiple personalities. The closer Suki comes to being "cured," she's haunted by a thought... what if the last unwanted identity turns out to be her?

Film4 FrightFest 2014: Reviews, Wrap-up, and Image Gallery!

Film4 FrightFest 2014: Reviews, Wrap-up, and Image Gallery! This year's spectacular Film4 FrightFest has now sadly been and gone, but in the interest of keeping everything together, here's a hub filled with the numerous reviews from the event, our picture gallery, and a few videos courtesy of the FrightFest boys!

Briefly commenting on the festival itself: Many will have made note of the movement of the fest from its previous position at the prestigious Empire cinema to the Vue just a few doors down.

This was a sad side effect of the Empire's decision to split its absolutely massive main screen into two separate auditoriums, works which made it much too difficult to plan a further year at the site – especially given the burden of not exactly knowing when all would be completed. Thus, change was inevitable, and we really must say that despite wide trepidation regarding the festival's performance at the Vue site, the gang behind FrightFest – Ian, Paul, Alan, and Greg – pulled it off in spectacular fashion (with no small amount of help from the friendly cinema staff!)

    Film4 FrightFest 2014

Multiple screens played the main roster of films on a staggered basis, and giving pass holders a dedicated seat within one of them for the weekend was a commendable move. Guests could visit each screen in turn to deliver introductions and Q&As without issue, and the problem of space outside of the screens and around the (much larger than the Empire) bar area for the massive crowds was rendered nonexistent. It was an appreciably well oiled machine throughout, and though the initial shock of change did appear to somewhat dull the spirits of the crowds inside the auditoriums in the early stages, the atmosphere certainly warmed as seats were settled into and the festival progressed. It bodes very well indeed for next year if the format is to be maintained.

Many thanks as usual to the FrightFest crew for having us along and for delivering yet another horror-laden weekend of fantastic entertainment. Now, on to the reviews (which do reflect just a number of the mammoth selection of films that play across all screens of the festival) – listed here for your easy perusal!

Also caught on the main screen this year were Lucky McKee's All Cheerleaders Die, which Serena perfectly echoed my own thoughts about in her review right here, and Jennifer Kent's excellent The Babadook. I'll let Brad espouse the virtues of that one to you in his excellent review here– it's a seriously creepy journey into the pits of grief, despair, and mental collapse (even if I do think it deserves a half-knife less for the acutely grating child at the centre of it... though one expects that's much to the point of the film).

While you're here, why not also take a gander at our own photo gallery from the festival, along with a few videos from each day courtesy of the hard-working crew behind FrightFest TV. • Exclusive: Director Hank Braxtan Talks New Creature Feature Unnatural

Exclusive: Director Hank Braxtan Talks New Creature Feature UnnaturalWith narrative shades reminiscent of 1979’s Prophecy, an old-school practical effects approach, a grueling location shoot in Alaskan winter climes, and a cast that includes 1990’s "Twin Peaks" bombshell Sherilyn Fenn, our interest was piqued from the onset for Unnatural...

Now, at long last, we’re finally able to bring you word on director Hank Braxtan’s recently wrapped creature feature. Helmed by Braxtan (whose upcoming psychological horror feature Chemical Peel is due out via Lionsgate this coming October), Unnatural was produced by Ron Carlson.

Cinematography is by Marc Carter and editing is by filmmaker Mike Mendez (Big-Ass Spider). The film was shot this past January and February on location in Fairbanks, Alaska, and in addition to Fenn, the cast includes James Remar (“Dexter”), Ray Wise (Jeepers Creepers 2, “Twin Peaks”), Graham Greene (The Green Mile), Q’orianka Kilcher (“Sons of Anarchy”), and Ivana Korab.

"With many species on the verge of extinction," reads the official synopsis of Unnatural, "a notorious environmental corporation seeks to genetically modify several animals to survive climate change. When a fashion photographer and his small crew arrive on location in Alaska, they, as well as their local guides, find themselves thrust into a nightmare when they become prey for one of the escaped creatures. Isolated in the wild, the clock is ticking as they attempt to hold out."

As for what drew him to the shoot, which required the director and his crew to brave sub-zero temperatures as they filmed on frozen rivers and in forests alike, Braxtan stated, “Honestly, the first thing that drew me to the material was the producer calling and saying, ‘Hey, do you want to direct a movie?’ That's my favorite kind of movie, right there. But in all seriousness, it was definitely up my alley from the moment the words ‘mutated polar bear’ hit my ears.”

“Growing up, I absolutely loved creature features and still do,” offered Braxtan of his attraction to the material. “My favorite films as a kid were all creature features; Predator, Aliens, even Freddy Krueger is a creature effect, and I've always admired the creativity of making a believable monster. If you think about it, you're really asking the audience a lot in order to believe that this outlandish monster could exist. Movies about psycho killers or other plausible antagonists aren't as risky in that fashion and I think, in the end, not as fun.”

Eschewing a CGI realization of the film’s creature, “I always go ‘old school,’ and for my part, I will always try to do so,” Braxtan said of his approach.

“It's not that I don't think CGI has a place in filmmaking; it just doesn't have the same soul. I've seen some very impressive CGI, but I never leave the theater wondering how it was done. Not long ago, effects artists had to create things. They had to really think and come up with ways to pull off an effect. I love that kind of thing, and to me, what always drew me to creature features were the creatures themselves. A movie monster absolutely has to be practical. That's not to say I don't make use of the great tool CGI is, but I try to keep it very limited and hopefully, like any effect, unnoticed by the audience.”

(Writer’s Note: We’ve got to keep the creature shots on the down-low, but from the footage we’ve seen, Amalgamated Dynamics delivered!)

We asked Braxtan, aside from the cold, what aspects of shooting on the tundra he found most challenging.

“Nothing, really,” he stated. “Not to dodge the question completely, but after working at minus-thirty-five degrees, I didn't find any other aspect of filming in Alaska to be difficult. Everything was a delight once you got out of the cold. I've done a lot of things in my short life, including serving time in the military, and I have to say that shooting a film in those conditions was one of the most difficult things I've ever done.”

As for working with the famous Fenn (who skyrocketed to acclaim via her character of Audrey Horne in David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” in 1990), “She was a doll from the first day!” said Braxtan. “I felt kinda terrible that the instant she stepped on set, I had her wading through waist-deep snow. She really had to endure a lot on this film, and sometimes I would wonder if she realized it was going to be this hard when she signed up! Everything always seems so easy on the page, but when you get out there and you feel that indescribable cold, shit gets real.”

With Unnatural currently in post-production, “There are some interesting scripts coming from both the writer of Chemical Peel as well as the producer of Unnatural,” said Braxtan of his next possible feature. “Ideally there will always be a next project, and really, that's all anyone can ask for.”

Exclusive Film Blog - Week 4 with Spirit World Films' Creature Feature

Exclusive Film Blog - Week 4 with Spirit World Films' Creature FeatureWe're back with the fourth of five installments of Dread Central's exclusive on-the-set coverage from Atlanta for Spirit World Films' Creature Feature, and this week we tackle “Always stay one step ahead of your competition,” and the creation of the “Scarecrow.”

Spirit World is the brainchild of three talented indie trendsetters: Chase Smith, Lance Paul and Edward Boss. These Southerners are turning the game upside down on what the true meaning of indie global films is.

With films budgeted at less than $20k, their combined multi “hat-wearing” skills are proving that you don’t need a giant budget nor a Hollywood soundstage to create cult classics.

Creature Feature is comprised of four short vignettes and one overall story that connects them all, similar to classics such as Creepshow and Trick 'r Treat.

Do clowns scare you? Have you ever looked at a scarecrow and wondered, "What if?" Are zombies or naked witches your thing? Or what about a good ole classic such as a werewolf? Have you ever heard of Gentleman “Springed Heel” Jack? If not, you will come October 2015!

Always Stay One Step Ahead of Your Competition!

The field of indie filmmaking is littered with the could’ves and the should’ves. The movies that were too good to fail, and the projects meant to return mom’s home loan that they spent way too much making it with. But in actuality, the amount of indie films that do in fact make any return on investment or even get finished and seen are very slim. Everyone has the idea that will revolutionize the film market, or the script that will make them the next Wes Craven. Very few indie horror films get seen outside of the cast and immediate friends, which can give the independent horror world a bad rap.

According to Chase, Lance and Edward, there is no secret or clear path to making a movie that gets seen. It just takes staying ahead of the competition, and that doesn't mean buying the newest Epic Red Camera or aerial robotic flyer.

Give a man the best camera equipment on the market and you will still only be a man and his camera. Knowing what to do with it is what makes the difference,” Chase Smith (Creator, Partner, Director, Writer)

Their approach to staying prominent in the game has always been about hiring the best cast, taking chances on camera angles, and above all else having fun with the craft they love. For example, during one of their films they were in need of dolly tracks that would allow them to pull off a scene where the main actor had a heroes run as he attempted to save a damsel. With a budget barely feeding their cast and splurging for fake blood they built 30 yards of dolly track out of nothing more than PVC pipe and particle board. This allowed them to pull off an epic chase scene that helped them land their first distribution deal.

The goal to making movies isn’t about being the best. It’s about stealing ideas from the best and making them work on your budget.” Lance Paul (Creator, Producer, Artist, Actor)

Though their budgets have gotten bigger, their work ethic and do anything mentality stays in tact. With Creature Feature they wanted to do the same thing. One thing they wanted to add to it was more lengthy steady cam shots used similarly in The Conjuring. The opening scene in The Conjuring when the family first moves into the new home has a steady cam shot that follows them from outside, under furniture, through rooms and ending out back. All done while dialogue is spoken and action happens. It was this shot that grabbed Chase’s attention when planning out shots for the new film. When Creature Feature hits theaters next October you will see just as creative a shot during a rave party that sets up the main story. Stay tuned for it.

    Creature Feature

    The Scarecrow!

Growing up in rural Georgia as a child a young Chase Smith was introduced to his biggest fear, Scarecrows. The “Whicker Man” crucified on stakes has been the bane of crows and children's imaginations for centuries. Originally used by farmers to scare away vegetable stealing Avians, over the Halloween years and through movie magic the friendly Mr. Crow has taken on many different appearances. Be it the watchful guide just looking for a brain or the killer demonic Jeepers Creepers terrorizing over sexed-teenagers.

In Spirit World Film’s newest horror movie, Creature Feature, the boys from the South decided to reimagine the corn watchman as one of their creature vignettes but still pay homage to the classic interpretation of him. Once Chase had finished the script and Lance Paul started playing with character designs, their Scarecrow was born.

While on a cabin trip during Halloween two couples decide to stay at the wrong mountain home under the eyes of leftover Scarecrows. All is peaceful until one of the hothead guys in the group decides to trash the pumpkin headed people enveloped in a mysterious fog. Brought to life by this enveloping fog that has traveled through all the vignettes, the Scarecrow breathes new life.

When character designs started for the Scarecrow, Lance wanted to make it seem like a mummified corpse under the burlap influenced by the Scarecrow from "Batman: The Animated Series" of the 90’s. Less demonic and more the result of happenstance that brings him to life. Originally the burlap was designed be more molded to his contours giving the impression of skin mixing with burlap. But like everything in film, the original ideas don’t always transfer over to the finished product especially when time and budget plays a part.

    Creature Feature

With over five creatures to create and over two dozen plus blood gags to develop and with very little time to design, the next step of the Scarecrow's journey landed on Alex-Michael Revel’s trained team of MUA’s. Using an original mold Alex had designed for SCI-FI’s TV show "Face-Off," the Scarecrow was designed to be molded around this full foam prosthetic design with burlap then covering the face and blending with the prosthetic. Using very earthy tones for his wardrobe and an organic paint pallet really helped bring him to life.

The Scarecrow was also given even more life by Alex, literally with hours to spare before the Crows initial appearance the original actor had to be replaced, stepping up and being over joyed to finally play a movie monster. Alex really stepped into the role with gusto, going as far as being tied to a Wooden “T” through numerous takes, and slaughtering four unwilling vacationers through numerous blood-covered scenes.

    Creature Feature

Speaking of blood and killing -- that is one reason we watch horror movies is it not? For their final vignette in the movie, Chase and Lance really wanted to go all out before the finally slaughter tying everything together at the end. Leaning on Alex’s teams to bring to life the most gruesome deaths in the movie, the most noticeable being the head stomping scene. The Scarecrow angered by the smashing of his pumpkin headed friends, goes all out in vengeance.

Taking out the most anger on the culprit that started his rampage. Pulling off a head stomping scene on an indie budget is one of the hardest deaths to pull off without actually creating a prosthetic head. Thankfully through some ingenious shooting ideas on Chase’s part and enough blood to drown a moose, the head stomping scene may be one of the most memorable kills in Creature Feature.

Enjoy these first glimpses of the Scarecrow on camera and his development stages from Lance Paul’s own sketchbook. Stay tuned for next week final article covering the final scene with all the monsters and the creation of the mysterious Jack. As we also include more in-depth expo on behind the camera true indie horror style with Atlanta’s Spirit World Films!

First Stills from The Town that Dreaded Sundown Remake

First Stills From The Town That Dreaded Sundown RemakeOn tap right now is your first look at the Jason Blum and Ryan Murphy produced remake of The Town that Dreaded Sundown. Gotta say we're stoked to see the classic sackhead return! Dig 'em!

"American Horror Story" director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon helmed the remake of the 1976 Charles B. Pierce horror classic with Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum producing. Addison Timlin, Travis Tope, Veronica Cartwright, Gary Cole, and Joshua Leonard (The Blair Witch Project) star.

The flick will be premiering at the BFI London Film Festival on October 14th and 18th.

Drawing inspiration from the 1976 classic of the same name, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s striking debut is not so much a remake as it is a shrewd reinvention, resulting in a genuinely innovative and unexpected meta-horror experience. Set in a world in which the original film exists and is very much part of popular consciousness, this update sees the quiet streets of Texerkana plagued by a maniac who bears a striking resemblance to the same Phantom Killer who wreaked havoc on the town decades before. Is history repeating itself? Or has somebody just seen the original film too many times? Perhaps the key to the mystery lies with young high school girl Jami, who must uncover the truth if she wants to survive the carnage.

Meticulously styled with an unmistakable 1970s genre vibe, but with an ultra-modern twist, this is that rare beast - a horror reboot that actually feels like it has been made with horror fans in mind.

    Synopsis
65 years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, the so-called "moonlight murders" begin again. Is it a copycat or something even more sinister? A lonely high school girl, with dark secrets of her own, may be the key to catching him.
