Blumhouse Bringing its Micro-Budget Concept to TV with Universal Cable

Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions have been burning up the box office with the micro-budget horror film concept, and now they’re branching out to TV with Universal Cable Productions.  Read on for the details of how you might soon be watching his latest projects on the small screen via Syfy and/or USA Network.

From the Press Release:
Universal Cable Productions (UCP) and Blumhouse Productions (The “Paranormal Activity,” “The Purge,” “Insidious,” and “Sinister” franchises) today announced they have entered into a multi-year production agreement that will implement a micro-budget financial and creative structure for television series.

The deal, announced today by Jeff Wachtel, President and Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, and Jason Blum, Founder and CEO, Blumhouse Productions, is the first to materialize from the first-look production agreement Blumhouse signed earlier this year with NBCUniversal and will focus on creating scripted and non-scripted programming leveraging the “micro-budget” model that has made Blumhouse a profit powerhouse in the film industry. As part of the agreement, Syfy and USA Network have each given Blumhouse and UCP a blind series commitment.

“Blumhouse has achieved tremendous financial and creative success with its production model in the feature film business, and together we figured out a way to adapt the model for television. It’s part of our studio’s strategy of being flexible with existing models and finding new ways to bring great ideas to market,” said Wachtel. “And because real success is always in the execution, we would only do this type of deal with a company like Blumhouse, who we know can deliver the quality.”

Blumhouse is bringing its feature film model to television with a plan to create an entire season of a scripted series for the average production cost of a traditional cable pilot. As in Blumhouse’s feature film model, this new financial model for television involves low upfront production costs including no fee for Blumhouse coupled with performance-based incentives, which for television will be triggered by a season 2 and subsequent season pick-ups. As part of the model, showrunners, like Blumhouse’s feature film directors, get more creative control and the opportunity to make their dream show. In today’s highly competitive market, this model allows for the low-cost production of high quality television content and sets the stage for future productions to attract top talent.

Jason Blum said: “When we launched our television business, one of our goals was to try and build on what we have done in film – keeping budgets low to give storytellers creative freedom and to increase profits. Jeff Wachtel and his entire team at Universal Cable Productions have been at the forefront of trying new models in television, and we are grateful to be a small part of their process. We are excited to get going as we partner with both new and established showrunners looking to tell their favorite stories.”

Blumhouse’s micro-budget, high-quality franchise films have grossed more than $1.4 billion worldwide on combined budgets under $45 million.  Under its Head of Television Jessica Rhoades, Blumhouse has recently expanded into TV production with “Ascension” on Syfy, “South of Hell” at WE TV, “Eye Candy” at MTV, and development deals at a number of networks. Blum executive produced the upcoming HBO documentary series “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” and won an Emmy for his producing role on HBO’s “The Normal Heart”.

As part of the overall deal with NBCUniversal, Universal Cable Productions and Universal Television share in the first look deal with Blumhouse. The “micro-budget” TV agreement is specific to UCP.

Haunting Phantasmagoria Trailer

About eight months ago we brought you the first word and look at the Italian anthology tale Phantasmagoria (no relation to the old school PC game or the Marilyn Manson project of the same name), and now today we have the official trailer and more.

If you’re in or near Long Island, take note that this Saturday, January 17,  Phantasmagoria will be screened as part of the New York Horror Show film fest.

From the Press Release:
M International Films (The Transparent Woman, L’amour à la plage) unveiled the first international trailer of its giallo film Phantasmagoria. Three directors, Mickael Abbate, Domiziano Cristopharo, and Tiziano Martella, offer us their original visions of fear in three gripping films that encompass the breadth of the genre: Diabolique, Il serpente dalla lingua acciaio, and My Gift to You.  The film stars Italian cult actor Venantino Venantini (City of the Living Dead, Ladyhawke) and newcomers Maya Dolan, Sophie Pâris, and Cristina Puccinelli.

With its typical Italian atmosphere and vintage photography, Phantasmagoria evokes the spirit of cult films directed by Mario Bava, Pupi Avati, and also William Castle. The music score is composed by Gyrls. The stories are written by Davide Chiara (Nero Infinito), Raffaele Picchio (Morituris, M is for Mouth), Lorenzo Paviano, and Riccardo De Flaviis.  The film is co-produced by Extreme Video snc (Anger of the Dead, Morning Star, Zombie Massacre) and produced by M International Films (The Transparent Woman, L’amour à la plage). The poster is illustrated by Malleus.

With three shocking tales of horror that take you beyond fear, the anthology was selected in more than 25 international festivals. The movie is represented by EuroObscura.

As we promised last week, we’ve dedicated ourselves to keeping you up-to-date on all the latest VOD releases, as it can be very difficult to keep track of such things. Today, one of last year’s big theatrical releases is available for instant streaming, so read on for details.

Though it’s not hitting DVD and Blu-ray until February 3rd, the Stiles White-directed Ouija (review) is now available for digital download, courtesy of Universal. If you missed it in theaters, now’s your chance to check the film out, though we can’t quite recommend you do.

As our own Jinx noted in his review, Ouija is more or less a cinematic turd, likely to only thrill and chill a younger generation of horror fans. But hey, that’s just our opinion, and we wouldn’t want to get in the way of you forming your own. So check it out if you’re interested.

Synopsis:
After Debbie (Shelley Hennig, “Teen Wolf”) suddenly dies, her best friend, Laine (Olivia Cooke, “Bates Motel”), attempts to contact her using an antique Ouija board she finds in Debbie’s room. When the curious teen begins asking the board questions and stumbles upon the mystery of her friend’s death, Laine discovers a resident spirit calling itself DZ, and eerie, inexplicable events begin to follow her. The group of friends dig deeper into the history of Debbie’s house and are shocked to find that Debbie wasn’t the first victim—and won’t be the last if they don’t figure out how to close the portal to the spirit world they’ve opened.

We’ve been talking about a possible remake of Escape from New York for a long time now, and finally it looks like it just may happen. Deadline is reporting that Fox has emerged from competitive bidding and closed a deal to remake the 1981 John Carptenter-directed cult classic.

Carpenter will be an executive producer and will exert creative influence over the project. Fox’s Mike Ireland brought it in and will steer. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman’s The Picture Company will produce. The hope is to reinvent the property with an eye toward launching a new franchise.

So once again… Who should play Snake Plissken? Let us know your ideas in the comments section below.

Dark Summer (2015)

Dark SummerStarring Keir Gilchrist, Peter Stormare, Grace Phipps, Stella Maeve, Maestro Harrell

Directed by Paul Solet

When you burst onto the horror scene with an impressive debut feature, you become somewhat of a genre darling, and I can’t think of a better way to describe Paul Solet. In 2009, Solet wrote and directed Grace, an exceptional first outing that was one of the very best horror films of that year.

Six years later, Solet makes his return with Dark Summer, penned by Mike Le. Trading in the undead baby for paranormal thrills and chills, Solet’s follow-up to Grace centers on 17-year-old Daniel, on house arrest after stalking the girl he’s in love with. When she kills herself during a Skype chat with him, Daniel becomes convinced that the girl of his dreams is haunting his waking nightmares.

Yes, this is yet another tale of paranormal activity, but Dark Summer has a whole lot more going for it than similar movies that have littered the big screen in recent years. For one, main character Daniel (Gilchrist) is an interesting one, as he’s the rare lead in a horror film that you kind of don’t trust or even like. He’s a self-confessed cyber stalker, and the film is immediately engaging due to the fact that he feels more like a horror movie villain than a horror movie “good guy.”

Though the script provides little reason to care about anyone in it, there’s also a story of unrequited love going on here between Daniel and friend Abby (Maeve) that is fairly compelling, as Abby clearly feels for Daniel the way Daniel feels for the girl he can’t get out of his mind – though he’s too stuck in his own head to even realize it. Why Abby is so in love with such a dull and creepy character is anyone’s guess, though there’s something sweet and heartbreaking about their relationship.

Another thing that separates this one from the paranormal pack is that Peter Stormare is in it, an actor who is almost always the best part of anything he’s in. Playing against type, Stormare is Daniel’s parole officer in Dark Summer, and he is indeed the finest actor in the film. His mere presence helps elevate it to another level, and it’s nice to see him play a guy on the right side of the law rather than the wrong side of it – though you still get the sense that his character’s got some serious demons!

Unfortunately, where Dark Summer falls apart is in its insistence to be just another paranormal movie, which is quite frankly what it is. Once that supernatural element comes into play, the film becomes little more than a rehashing of ideas and concepts from every other movie of this variety, with things like creepy dolls, strange symbols that require Google searches, a mysterious secret door and electronics with minds of their own filling out the majority of the runtime – sound familiar? Yeah. It is.

What’s frustrating is that Dark Summer feels like a movie that anyone could’ve made, which is a shame considering the fact that Solet is a director who’s better than making such a film. Like with Grace, his directing here is notably above average – an underwater scene, in particular, is quite beautiful – so it’s hard to blame him (or even the actors) for the things that don’t work about it.

The problems all boil down to the script, which is far too generic for its own good. Solet does all he can with the material, making a better film than most would with what was given to him, but he can only do so much. At the end of the day, Dark Summer just isn’t the sort of movie you’d expect or hope for from the guy who made such a unique and meaningful film as Grace, and you kind of can’t help but be disappointed about that.

Though competently made, with more going for it than the majority of Hollywood’s recent ghost stories, Dark Summer is nevertheless likely to leave you with the feeling that there wasn’t much meaning to what you just watched. It’s mediocre at best, imparting little more than a hope that Paul Solet’s next film is written by Paul Solet.

So here’s to hoping.

From the Press Release:
Lucy Lawless, Stuart Townsend, Joe Doyle, and Oliver Bell have joined the cast of WGN America’s hit supernatural thriller “Salem,” which begins production on its second season today in Shreveport, LA.  The new season of the series called “perversely entertaining” by The New York Times and “a sexy good time” by The Hollywood Reporter centers on Salem’s most powerful and ruthless witch, Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery; “Made in Jersey,” “Human Target”), as she faces off against new and old adversaries vying for control of the embattled 17th century village.

Created and written by award-winning Brannon Braga (“Cosmos,” “24”) and Adam Simon (The Haunting in Connecticut), the gripping one-hour drama, produced by Fox 21, will return to WGN America in April 2015.

Doyle (“Raw”) joins the cast as a series regular in the role of “Baron Sebastian Marburg,” the charming and cultured son of the Countess.  Also added as a series regular is Bell, who reprises his role as the long-lost son of Mary – long believed to be dead, but who was revealed to have been secretly kept alive by Mary’s witches at the end of Season One.

28 Months Later – Sequel Talks Resume

It’s been a long time since last we heard anything regarding the sequel to both 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, but just like that! Boom! There’s news to report!

IGN caught up with screenwriter Alex Garland, who had this to say about the possibility of a new chapter in the beloved franchise.

We’ve just started talking about it seriously. We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility.

As for the title timeline…

It’s more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years,” he revealed. “28 Years gives you one more place to go. 28 Decades is probably taking the piss,” he jokes.

We just got off the line with director Eduardo Sanchez, who was talking about his new film, Exists, and of course we asked the magic question… Where is Blair Witch 3?

“We have been talking to Lionsgate and there has been a little bit of movement but nothing is concrete. The film seems inevitable to me, but really it’s just a matter of it being the right time. I’m thinking it’s going to happen sooner than later at this point, but I always say that. There’s always rumblings and certain ideas being pushed around and such. While I don’t have anything firm to talk about now, it wouldn’t surprise me if something happened within the next year or two.”

Stay tuned, campers.

Fresh Poltergeist Details Haunt the Web

Things have been eerily quiet regarding the remake of the classic flick Poltergeist. Especially with the flick slated to hit theatres on July 24, 2015. Today Collider caught up with star Sam Rockwell, who dished some new details on what we can expect when the film arrives.

I’ve seen a little in looping. I hope it’s good. I really don’t know,” Rockwell told the site when asked if he’s seen any footage. “I really wish I could tell you. I’m praying that it’s – I mean, it’s gonna be hard to live up to the first one. The first one’s pretty damn good. This one’s gonna be in 3D though, I can tell you that.

The 10-year-old boy is really the protagonist this time,” he added. “JoBeth Williams was the protagonist for the most part in the first one, and now the kid, it’s really through his point-of-view. So it’s more of a kids’ movie so I don’t know if it’s gonna be like rated-R scary. It’s not like Conjuring type of scary. You know, it’s a different kind of movie. It’s more of an adventure. It’s essentially a child abduction film when you come down to it. I mean, the original Poltergeist is too.

Poltergeist has been rated PG-13 for “intense frightening sequences, brief suggestive material, and some language.

Rosemarie DeWitt, Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris, Kyle Catlett, Saxon Sharbino, Nicholas Braun, and Jane Adams star in a revisionist take on the classic horror film. David Lindsay-Abaire, Juliet Snowden, and Stiles White worked on the screenplay. Gil Keenan directs the 3D redux.

Synopsis
A family struggling to make ends meet relocates to an outdated suburban home and is confronted by an angry spirit who kidnaps their youngest daughter and challenges them to band together to rescue her from the clutches of evil.

Don’t know about you guys, but my hopes of seeing a new Friday the 13th movie this year are quickly dwindling. The bottom line is we’re already into 2015, and this latest update from producer Andrew Form doesn’t exactly scream it’s happening.

According to Collider, Form offered the following as an update: “Just working on the script still. Hoping to make that movie this year, and Brad [Fuller; producing partner in Platinum Dunes], I’m gonna confirm that Jason is in the movie!

As far as we know, David Bruckner (The Signal, V/H/S) will be in the director’s chair. No mention of the planned November 13, 2015, release date was made. In theory I guess it could happen.

Here, let me help with the script… Kids show up in the woods. Kids get murdered in gruesome ways. That’s all we want. Thanks.

No doubt looking for a possible Oscar push, Warner Bros. has moved its release of Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea from March of this year all the way to December 11th, according to Box Office Mojo.

In the Heart of the Sea is based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex. It stars Chris Hemsworth as the vessel’s veteran first mate, Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker as its inexperienced captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.

Tom Holland also stars as young seaman Tom Nickerson with Brendan Gleeson as the same man, 30 years later. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà is the captain of another ship, the Archimedes, who tries to warn the Essex of what may lie ahead.

Howard directed from a screenplay by Charles Leavitt, story by Charles Leavitt and Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, based on the book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick, winner of the 2000 National Book Award for Nonfiction.

In the Heart of the Sea is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a COTT Productions-Enelmar Productions, A.I.E. co-production, a Roth Films/Spring Creek/Imagine Entertainment Production, in association with Kia Jam.

Opening on December 11, 2015, in theatres and IMAX, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures. In the Heart of the Sea has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for intense sequences of action and peril, brief startling violence, and thematic material.

For more info visit the official In the Heart of the Sea website and “like” In the Heart of the Sea on Facebook.

Synopsis:
In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. But that told only half the story.

In the Heart of the Sea reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic, and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

The season finale of “American Horror Story: Freak Show” arrives next week in the form of Episode 4.13, “Curtain Call,” and we have a couple of stills plus the ep’s preview to share.  We’ve enjoyed the “Freak Show” overall, but much like last year’s “Coven,” it’s lost a bit of steam in these last few episodes.

In any event, dig into the goods, which also include an inside look at how Sarah Paulson, visual effects, and wardrobe work together to bring Bette and Dot to life, and let us know what you think!

Ouija – Signs Point to Sequel

Ouija, while not a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination, was a great gateway movie for teens filled with enough scares to score yourself some side-boob in a dark theatre before curfew.

During an interview with Collider, Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller let the site know that a sequel is indeed in the cards! “Ouija 2 is coming,” said Fuller. I’m sure there will be an army of excited horny teens there on opening night.

In the original film…

After Debbie (Shelley Hennig, “Teen Wolf”) suddenly dies, her best friend Laine (Olivia Cooke, “Bates Motel,”) attempts to contact her using an antique Ouija board she finds in Debbie’s room.
