Scream Factory Details Scarecrows Release; Announces Nomads, Jack’s Back, Ghost Town and More!

$

0

I knew ONE THING for sure today when I woke up and that’s that I had better keep a close eye on the Scream Factory Facebook page. Of course they didn’t disappoint! Read on for a boatload of news!

From the site:

Our celebration of this most awesome day starts off with the announcement of two blu-ray double features of four films making their debuts on blu-ray:

– 1987’s genie-on-the loose THE OUTING will be paired with 1980’s Omen-inspired THE GODSEND from Cannon Pictures.

– Empire Pictures’ CELLAR DWELLER and CATACOMBS (both from 1988) will share a double bill. John Carl Buechler (Troll, Friday the 13th Part VII) directed CELLAR and David Schmoeller (Tourist Trap, Puppetmaster, The Seduction) directed CATACOMBS.

All are expected to land on 7/14 and will receive new widescreen HD transfers.

Many of you will recognize these films from our prior “All-Night Horror Marathon” budget DVD releases back in 2013. At the time, we were unable to create new transfers for a variety of reasons (mostly financial) which caused disappointment from fans who wanted better presentations. (We felt your pain too.) We are pleased to be able to “correct” this now and have chosen some of the more requested titles from those releases to experiment with. If they do well, perhaps more will follow.

Double Features

Our Friday the 13th celebration continues by revealing that Empire Pictures’ 1988 horror-western hybrid GHOST TOWN, will be riding into the Scream Factory homestead on Blu-ray July 28th. (We’ve had several requests for this one.)

Ghost Town

James Spader (“The Blacklist,” “Boston Legal”) finds himself caught up in serial killer intrigue in JACK’S BACK. This 1988 underrated thriller (both Siskel and Ebert gave it a “thumbs up!“) is scheduled to slash onto DVD & Blu-ray for the first time this Summer!

Jack's Back

This Summer we will be releasing the 1986 shocker NOMADS for the first time on Blu-ray!

From the Director of Predator and Die Hard, the action centers on Pierce Brosnan (Tomorrow Never Dies) as a doctor battling demonic spirits. Also along for the ride: Lesley Anne-Down (The Great Train Robbery), Mary Woronov (Rock N Roll High School, Night of the Comet) and even 80s singer Adam Ant?!?

Artwork you see here – sporting the classic original theatrical key art – is final. Street date has not been locked yet but we’ll keep you posted when its confirmed. No word to report yet on any extras.

And if you think we’re done, we’re barely getting started…expect more new title announces in the next couple of months!

Nomads

From the Press Release:
Trespassers will be violated. Scream Factory proudly presents the action-packed supernatural thriller Scarecrows on June 2, 2015. A bit of casting shake-up has happened on the “Scream Queens” front as The Wrap is reporting that Joe Manganiello has dropped out of Fox’s series. As he exits, “Nashville” star Oliver Hudson has been cast in a lead male role.

UPDATE: Check out the new teaser trailer below released to commemorate Friday the 13th.

The “True Blood” star was cast in a series regular role on the Ryan Murphy anthology series in January, but an individual close to the show said that he has decided to leave prior to production due to scheduling conflicts with “Scream Queens” shooting dates as it moves into series production and his commitments to promoting his summer feature film Magic Mike XXL internationally.

It has also been reported that he’s leaving the Fox series to clear up scheduling conflicts between it and Suicide Squad, in which he’s being considered for the role of Deathstroke.

Scream Queens Joe Oliver

“Scream Queens” would’ve been Manganiello’s first series regular role since starring for four seasons on HBO’s “True Blood,” which ended its run last August.

Hudson (“Nashville,” Grown Ups 2, Rules of Engagement) has been cast as one of the male leads on the comedy-horror anthology. As with all casting announcements – no details of the role are being released by producers.

Hudson joins an ensemble cast for “Scream Queens” that includes Lea Michele, Nasim Pedrad, Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Nick Jonas, Keke Palmer, and Abigail Breslin. Slated to premiere in the fall with 15 episodes, “Scream Queens” revolves around a college campus rocked by a series of murders.

The Fox comedy-horror anthology series hails from 20th Century Fox TV and Ryan Murphy Television. Murphy will exec produce with “Glee’s” Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, and Dante Di Loreto.

Exclusive – Jack Huston Confirmed as The Crow

The Lexington Comic and Toy Convention is in full swing this weekend, and our own Jason “Jinx” Jenkins was able to catch up with Crow creator James O’Barr about the new version of the film that’s coming our way and just who would be donning the make-up!

O’Barr said that “Jack Huston has definitely been cast,” that he was “really happy with that choice,” and that the film “will shoot in a couple of months.” He also said the film will essentially be a straight adaptation of his original graphic novel, which differs quite a bit from the (still awesome) 1994 Brandon Lee vehicle.

Corin Hardy directs the remake of the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed adaptation of the James O’Barr graphic novel The Crow which is about a murdered man who comes back for revenge.

The Cliff Dorfman-scripted pic will go into production in the spring.

NECA has shared some prototype imagery of its Mego-style clothed Mrs. Voorhees figure, as played by the wonderful Betsy Palmer, and for the first time ever… young Jason in FIGURE FORM as played by Ari Lehman.

Unfriended (2015)

UnfriendedStarring Shelley Hennig, Renee Olmstead, Moses Jacob Storm

Directed by Levan Gabriadze

Just how you’re sometimes unsure what you want to say before you type it out and press “send,” Blumhouse’s Unfriended is still working out last minute tweaks of their film, deciding what they want to put out into the world before the final edit. That said, the version shown at SXSW should be very close to what you wind up seeing in theaters (not your computer screen!) when it downloads nationwide on April 17.

The concept of an entire horror movie taking place online has the appearance of being a daring concept, and admittedly, it is a hard sell to convince people to leave their computer screens at home only to come to a theater to see a giant computer screen staring back at them instead of the pristine digital projection they’re accustomed to. It’s not a slam dunk for big box office, but the concept is not really that experimental anymore now that films like Paranormal Activity 4, V/H/S and Open Windows have come into the fray.

Depicted as a cyber-bully Brady Bunch, six friends – Blaire (Shelley Hennig), Mitch (Moses Jacob Storm), Val (Courtney Halverson), Jess (Renee Olstead), Ken (Jacob Wysocki) and Adam (Will Peltz) – all jump on a Skype call to hang out and make plans for the weekend. During an impromptu sex chat with couple Blaire and Mitch, suspiciously, all four of the other friends calling are brought into the chat without Mitch and Blaire ever accepting the call. A blank avatar stares back at all of them as well, with the group eventually just thinking that it’s some kind of glitch instead of a pervy hacker. Then, suddenly, the memorial Facebook page of their larger-than-life friend Laura Barnes (Heather Sossaman) becomes active again as someone starts to message Mitch and Blaire, effectively freaking them out. The entity begins to play games with all of the friends, revealing secrets that lead them to turn on each other or, even worse, themselves.

Because the viewer is only seeing within the laptop’s camera range, there are some effective moments where it’s not clear if Blaire is really typing all the time to her boyfriend and vice versa. How manipulative is this mysterious ghost in the machine and just how many strings is it really pulling? The question as to whether or not someone is just messing with them is answered further on into the film after a lengthy setup before the teens are taken out one by one, going out in ways that mock their own personalities and weaknesses.

All of Unfriended is mostly done in one take with all of the actors alone in different rooms as the cameras record their performance. This feat is somewhat wasted because of a plethora of buffering and pixel effects that try to add suspense but instead take away from the build-up that could have reached a fever pitch if the one-take aspect was highlighted even further. In this day and age, this kind of bad connection is almost a thing in the past and makes the breaking up of the images even more frustrating.

There is some effective suspense, however, created with indecisive typing that reveals the knee-jerk reaction text or message before it’s edited on the fly to cover up what Blaire is really thinking and feeling in certain scenes. The performances by all of the actors are also highlights, and they work well off each other, showing that they can react almost the same way as they would if they were actually in the same room. The energy is there, and their chemistry makes Unfriended a welcome intrusion instead of high-concept chore without any heart.

Unfriended is not so much an indictment of internet culture or the titans of social media as it is a comment on how we use the connectivity available to us and how not thinking about the effects of bullying could wind up coming back to haunt you. Or worse, possess you and force you to stick your hand in a blender.

New Friday the 13th: Crystal Lake Chronicles Details; The CW Interested

It’s been a busy Friday the 13th weekend, and some of the more interesting news to come out of it has been saved for the last day! Friday the 13th: The Franchise fansite caught up with creator Sean S. Cunningham during New Jersey’s Monster-Mania convention, who dropped some new details.

The site reports that Cunningham has “confirmed interest from The CW in regards to pickup for the TV show.” He reportedly said that the basic premise of the series will focus on the “REAL” city of Crystal Lake and the effect that the serialized films had on its “real life” counterpart. This allows them to reimagine Jason in a more grounded reality, as the films would be based off the real life killings that took place at the Camp (which was inspired by Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Blairstown, New Jersey) with both the hockey-masked Jason and a more serious backwoods-inspired killer making appearances throughout. A very Meta approach, if you will.

It is worth noting that while there are The Crystal Lake Recreation Area Camp Grounds located in the San Gabriel Mountains in Azusa, California, the Crystal Lake town the series will introduce is entirely fictitious.

Stay tuned.
