Best Selling Author Frank Beddor and Liz Cavalier Talk The Ever Expanding World of The Looking Glass Wars and Offer a Free Giveaway

Frank Beddor is indeed a renaissance man. He’s a world champion skier, movie producer, actor, best-selling author and all around cool dude. He, along with his collaborative partner Liz Cavalier, recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about their work on The Looking Glass Wars universe.

Since Los Angeles is a mecca of reflective portals to unbounded imagination, it makes perfect sense that it is also home to Beddor (author of the The Looking Glass Wars trilogy, Hatter M. and upcoming Hatter Madigan: Ghost in the Hatbox prose novel) and Cavalier (creative collaborator and co-author of Hatter M). The duo paired with renowned artist Ben Templesmith on the Hatter M. graphic novels (part of which can be accessed for free later in this article), and are currently enjoying an already successful Kickstarter campaign for two new books from their ever-expanding publishing chessboard, Automatic Publishing.

Dread Central: So this is sort of a free form combination interview, art show and peek into the creative process of your longtime collaboration. To get started, Frank, could you explain what was your inspiration for The Looking Glass Wars, and more specifically, the character of Hatter Madigan?

Frank Beddor: The inspiration for The Looking Glass Wars came from a twisting, turning series of events that began when I discovered an incomplete deck of cards in the British Museum. I was wildly attracted to these cards and pursued a line of inquiry that led to the startling realization that Lewis Carroll had not created a work of fiction – but had instead re-written a young girl’s autobiographical account of her exile from Wonderland. This young girl was Princess Alyss Heart of Wonderland – or as history has labeled her – Alice Liddell, the muse of Lewis Carroll.

Hatter Madigan began as a mesmerizing image on a playing card in the Wonderland deck that I was able to assemble with the help of a London antiquities dealer. When I began to uncover the true story of Wonderland it became clear that the Mad Hatter was the mad offspring of Lewis Carroll’s imagination. Royal Bodyguard Hatter Madigan was far from mad and he loathed tea. I was inspired by his heroic 13-year search for his lost princess and wanted to give a full account of his fantastic, harrowing and at times, even humorous travels in our world.

DC: How long have you been working on The Looking Glass Wars and Hatter M?

FB: We’re celebrating all kinds of anniversaries this year. The 10th anniversary of publishing our Hatter M. graphic novels, the 15-year anniversary of writing the Looking Glass Wars, the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and the completion of Royal Bodyguard’s 13-year search (1859-1872) to find Wonderland’s lost Princess Alyss.

Book 5 of Hatter M – Love of Wonder – is the final volume in the series. I sent you 13 pages – one for every year of Hatter’s search – of exclusive preview art from Love of Wonder (also see below). First off, you will see author Lewis Carroll featured in pages illustrating the pivotal moment when Hatter and Lewis met and discussed the whereabouts of the missing Alyss (not Alice). Other pages include a look at many characters and locations readers of The Looking Glass Wars may have long imagined and now get to see in Sami Makkonen’s revelatory art. Those pages can be downloaded here.

DC: But those 13 pages are just the beginning of the love you have spread to Dread Central readers. We understand you are wrapping up a Kickstarter campaign on Sunday and having met your goal are now into stretch goals.

FB: We are. The Kickstarter was to help publish two new books, Seeking Wonder and The Art of the Looking Glass Wars. We hit the publishing goa of $5,000 after a few days and added stretch goals. You can check out The Looking Glass Wars Kickstarter campaign here.

Hatter M Hatter M Hatter M Hatter M Hatter M Hatter M Hatter M Hatter M Hatter M Hatter M

DC: You’ve experienced amazing grace with artists beginning with Ben Templesmith on your initial Hatter M single issues.

FB: Ben definitely gave us a boost onto the comic stage with his visual style and enthusiastic fan base. Ben’s first four single issues comics are now collected into Volume 1 of Hatter M: Far From Wonder. After Ben, I was again super fortunate to find Sami Makkonen, an artist whose style was close enough to Ben’s to not be jarring to the readers while also having its own energy and unique look. Working with Sami continues to be an excellent experience and even though Hatter Madigan is having a well-deserved rest I look forward to future twists and turns for Sami to illustrate.

To introduce your readers to Hatter M. and to thank any long time fans I’ve sent over a free pdf download of Hatter M: Far from Wonder, illustrated by fan-favorite Ben Templetsmith, featuring 176 pages of art. You can download Hatter M.: Far From Wonder here for free until the end of the Kickstarter campaign on March 23 at 10 a.m. PST.

And that free download, Dreaddies, is just for showing up. Enjoy.

DC: Liz Cavalier, what are you currently working on now that the final volume of Hatter M is completed?

Liz Cavalier: Well, our ever-expanding publishing chessboard must be tended or else chaos ensues. On a weekly basis I write the Wonderland Portal, our email bulletin from the Other Side of the Looking Glass. It is put together every Monday and sent out at midnight. If anyone would like to receive this you can sign up here.

Since Frank and I love to think up fun ideas to help share our books with readers we are always engaged in various schemes to get the word out and those words must be composed. Just this past week we sent out a Wonderland Crate to Lootcrate stuffed with all the books and Wonderland artifacts, and had our own Mad Hatter (Mad Chad) visiting Meltdown Comics in L.A. bearing gifts. Talented Mad Chad also designed a pair of shoes for Whoopi Goldberg who has proven herself an ardent supporter of Hatter M. After Whoopi’s Wonderland genealogy revealed a lifetime as the Queen of Clubs and Redd’s devoted gal pal we included Queen Whoopi as a character in Love of Wonder. Frank imbued the shoes with a dose of imagination before we shipped them via a Puddle Where No Puddle Should Be.

FB: Tell him about Tsunami Surf Sisters, your new book series for Automatic Publishing.

LC: Sure. There’s a new wave in town. Tsunami Surf Sisters is a totally new book series and not connected with Wonderland (that we know of so far). Of course in order to fit the publishing slate at Automatic it does manifest fantastical energy and links to the unknown. Four ultra competitive girl surfers form a super hero team to protect the oceans. Book one in the series will be the genesis of our heroes and their first adventure as a team lead by Luna, a mysterious and powerful mermaid. As the series begins, the storm of the new millennium rages around the planet. It’s the last stand to save the Oceans and a tsunami wave is sent to claim the chosen ones. Selected from around the globe, the surfers ride the crest of the monster wave, barely visible through rain and mist as they approach an uncharted, secret island. As the storm clouds clear the surfers are revealed to be quattro robust crazy-haired teenage wahines in board shorts and bikini tops! Will these four teen tweens be able to do the job?! Luna and the Surf Gods are betting on it and so are we. The origin of this series is as labyrinthine as the events that lead me to collaborate with Frank on Hatter M.

DC: How did you and Frank get together to work on Hatter M?

LC: While Frank had uncovered a great deal of information regarding Hatter Madigan’s search during his ongoing investigation of the story behind the Wonderland cards, I had discovered even more. My lifelong passion of tracking the myth of an otherworldly warrior who appeared in France in 1859 to crisscross the planet for 13 years dovetailed perfectly with Frank’s discovery regarding the truth of Wonderland. Over time, I had collected the maps and coded diaries of a truly mad traveler in search of something profound. But two questions remained. Who was this man and what did he search for? With the publication of The Looking Glass Wars I found my answers. Upon reading the book I immediately contacted Frank and strongly suggested we meet. He agreed.

DC: How is Tsunami Surf Sisters possibly as labyrinthine as that!?

LC: Some time ago, we received a large envelope covered with foreign stamps. It had traveled a long, long way to reach us in Los Angeles. No return address. Inside we found handwritten pages stained with sea brine informing us of the Surf Sisters and their very barreled adventures. The writer felt the world needed to know how hard the Sisters and Luna were working on behalf of all of us to save the oceans. The stories were written in a simple, direct style and the letter was signed, Dojo Gee. By utilizing the resources of the Hatter M. Institute for Paranormal Travel I was able to track this envelope to a sea cave on a lost coast. I met Dojo Gee and camped in the sea cave while helping her turn her stories into the first novel in the series. It was truly mind blowing and enormous FUN. Frank and I plan to publish a Surf Sisters adventure every year until the oceans are once again pristine.

DC: Do you have any closing messages for our readers?

FB: We do. Our Kickstarter ends Monday. In addition to Seeking Wonder, we’re offering The Art of the Looking Glass Wars. This art book features amazing concepts from artists such as Stephan Martiniere (Guardians of the Galaxy), Vance Kovacs (Thor), Doug Chiang (Star Wars), Chris Appelhans (Coraline) and many more. Check it out here.

Walking Deceased, The (2015)

The Walking DeceasedStarring Dave Sheridan, Joey Oglesby, Tim Ogletree

Directed by Scott Dow

The Walking Deceased, a parody of AMC’s monumentally successful series, is actually a mock-up of recent zombie fare in general. The main construct of the characters and plot are modeled after “The Walking Dead,” but the zom-com Warm Bodies is also lambasted with almost the same frequency. Expecting a lackluster joke-a-thon akin to the tedium found in the abysmal Freidberg and Seltzer films, instead, The Walking Deceased is a lot funnier than it should be.

Following a Sheriff (Dave Sheridan) from a hospital of horrors to the brain-stained streets outside (just like Rick in the actual series), the search to see if his family is still alive ends abruptly when he finds his son, ranger hat intact, pouring bad drinks and managing a zombie stripper bar. An early scene where Sheridan breaks down with a case of over crying after a stripper’s tit is bitten off is some of the first evidence that The Walking Deceased has some genuine laughs in its, admittedly, limited arsenal. After hooking up with a group of rag tags including a fake Darrell (whose crossbow is so tiny it should probably only shoot suction cups), the group holds up at (you guessed it) a remote farm to prepare to take on the zombie horde.

Certainly not on the same laugh-a-minute level as entries like Club Dread, there is a real, tangible sense of camaraderie among the no-name cast that work off each other like a newly formed comedy troupe that’s still feeling each other out. The chemistry is there and because of a number of well placed jokes and organic line delivery, there really are some genuine laughs throughout The Walking Deceased despite its obvious low budget shortcomings. A group of fantasy nerds inventing a new iteration of LARP called ZALARPING, or Zombie Apocalypse Live Action Roll Playing, and zombie heads exploding as they’re forced to wrap their brains around the plots of Cloud Atlas and Inception are standouts that make the barely 80-minute running time go by even quicker.

Sure, The Walking Deceased is pretty forgettable when it’s all said and done, but it has that charming, homegrown B-movie appeal that even the most jaded horror fan has learned to embrace in order to squeeze out some joy out of the schlock wasteland we’re used to wading through.

Shockingly, as the outtakes begin to play during the credits, you might not mind your pant legs being a little dirty after wading through the filth to find this floating on top. A parody was bound to happen sooner or later and the quality of AMC’s powerhouse trickles down to elevate The Walking Deceased a little above the line between the unwatchable and the “Hey! This is actually pretty good” level. Surprised? Me too.

Reggie Lee Talks Grimm, the Fans, and What’s to Come

Just in time for the return of “Grimm” tonight with Episode 4.14, “Bad Luck,” we had the good fortune of sitting down with Sgt. Wu himself, Reggie Lee, to get the scoop on his character, the direction of the show, and the terrors to come.

We asked about what kind of changes he’s experienced since Wu has been brought into the Scooby gang.

Well, as Reggie I’m working a lot more,” Lee says with enthusiasm. “Russell [Hornsby; Hank] and David [Giuntoli; Nick] laughed a lot… once the reveal came and I was officially into the fold, they were like, ‘You know you’re gonna be working whenever we are, and you’ll be in whatever we’re in.’ I said, ‘No, they’re just gonna let me know what went down and I’m just gonna go back to describing crime scenes, while being in the know.’ Literally four-episodes into when my character Wu found things out… I was SO tired! *laughs* I was working every single day, tagging along with them. I love it, really. It’s a whole new dynamic for this gang… and now, as you can see, things are getting a little disparate. There are different forces of evil coming through. There’s a whole new excitement about where my character is going. Before I was kind of freaked out to learn about the Wesen, but now I think Wu brings a new found excitement to the group when he’s finding out about these creatures. I’m the tech-savy person in the group, and I love that. I love researching. It brings a whole new energy. Aside from that it’s also a lot of fun to be actually work with the group and not just Nick and Hank. I love working with those two and we always have a blast, but now working with Bree [Turner; Rosalie], Silas [Weir Mitchell; Monroe], Bitsie [Tulloch; Juliette], and Claire [Coffee; Adalind], it’s just been a whole new experience. It’s been a four season long dream of Reggie Lee to join this gang. It’s been such a joy, man. It’s brought a whole other level to my character. I cannot be anything but grateful for that.

Grimm - Season 4

The last episode ended on a cliffhanger which *SPOILERS AHEAD* found Adalind finding out that she was pregnant with Nick’s baby. That’s right, there’s a half Grimm half Hexenbiest on the way! What a little bundle of lunacy, right? We asked Reggie the ramifications of this latest unexpected fruit-bearing insemination.

Welcome to Claire Coffee’s real life pregnancy,” laughs Lee. “She’s due in May or June. I think it was a surprise to everyone but kudos to the show writers for writing things in. What a wonderful monkey wrench to throw into the mix! When we first read that Adalind was pregnant with Nick’s Baby, we were all like, ‘What?!? Another pregnancy? How are the fans going to react to that?!’ It’s just so soon since her last… THAT WHORE, ADALIND! *laughs* “It’s Adalind, man. She can get into any kind of mess that she wants and people will dig it. She’s kind of like the only one on the show who can do something like that and people will still love her. Believe me when I tell you, her pregnancy will reap its rewards and wreak its havoc. We’re shooting Episode 20 right now and I have to say we’re all tired! Our brains are tired because of all these twists and turns that have shown up in these last five or six episodes. Everything has just been so out of left field. None of us… we all have no idea what’s coming for our characters. We don’t know anything! We’re all freaked out! Once we get these scripts everything’s truly a surprise. We’re on this rollercoaster that’s dangerously close to flying completely off of the rails. You veer too far one way or the other and it’s gonna be chaos. Just wait and see. Things get pretty crazy.

Wu, both unwittingly and wittingly has been dealing with a lot of creatures. Did Reggie have a personal favorite Wesen? The answer is yes!

I grew up in the Philippines with the Aswang. We would call these stories ‘kanto’ stories. Kanto literally means ‘corner.’ When I was growing up I would hang around the corner with my buddies and we would all tell each other stories that our parents would tell us. The Aswang story was one of the biggest tales that I grew up with. I had visions of it and what not of what it could look like, and to see it in ‘real life?’ Wow. I mean it was pretend but that creature has always been very real to me. So yeah, my favorite Wesen is definitely the Aswang.

Aswang Grimm

Over the last several Seasons “Grimm”‘s fanbase has grown by leaps and bounds. This, as you would imagine, could have quite an impact on an actor.

There’s a realization that comes after the first season, and you keep getting picked up that fans are what keep you going. Especially in the climate now in which some shows don’t even make it past the first couple of episodes. It’s the loyalty of the fans that enable us to do what we do. It’s so much fun to interact with the people who watch the show, especially when we’re live tweeting during an episode. I think we get as much out of it as they do. Fans of the genre are completely outrageous and loyal. This show has gathered an incredible following since its premiere. This is a whole new world for me. To be accepted and celebrated in a way by these fans… it’s kind of a new experience. The first time we all got to go to Comic-Con was CRAZY, and it’s been getting wonderfully crazier every year. Seeing how involved our fans are with these characters is electric. It’s humbling. Honestly, it’s touching to me. Our fans are so invested. As Wu when I went to the insane asylum there were people tweeting how they hated Nick and Hank for what they let happen to Wu at that particular point. Seeing that kind of outpouring of emotion really struck a chord with me. I feel like all of us, the cast and the fans, I feel like we’re friends. It’s really an eye-opener when you see these people interacting and really feeling for you. I’m incredibly lucky. You never know which characters are gonna take off and what fans are gonna be drawn to. There’s something about Wu’s normality… his sarcasm… his wit that I think people can relate to. They want to be around him. He’s a fun character. Just like Monroe… people love the lightness as well as the complexity of the character. I will stay loyal to the fans of “Grimm” way beyond this show. They’ve given us a life that goes way beyond what we thought we would ever have. I am incredibly grateful. Incredibly.

Grimm - Season 4

Dave Sheridan Talks The Walking Deceased

$

We sat down with Dave Sheridan recently to talk about his new parody film of “The Walking Dead” and other zombie projects, entitled The Walking Deceased (review), to get you guys the skinny on it! Read on for the goods and the bads!

Dread Central: Can you talk a little bit about your comedy background?

Dave Sheridan: Yeah, I sort of started my whole career at “Saturday Night Live” in 1991. I was working with Kevin Nealon and the Weekend Update. This was prior to the internet so my job hopping into the fryer there was AP [Images] and getting the photos and all the stuff that was being used visually over the shoulder. It wasn’t like, ‘Hey, we need Dan Quayle with a golf club; can you Google that?’ From there, I became friends with Chris Farley… he got me hired at Second City in Chicago. Did my training there and performed and wrote, directed and produced. I sort of cut my teeth at every level at that theatre.  From there, I had a little bit of a demo put together and I took it over to MTV and they offered me a development deal and I created “Buzzkill’ in 1995.

DC: Are you excited about the film coming out today? Is it still a thrill even though your name’s not in lights and it’s the new era of VOD?

DS: I’m excited. I’m on as a producer on this, so I’ve been with the film since wrapping it and editing it, then looking at sound score and helping cut the trailer. This was a true independent movie, so we screened it at AFM [American Film Market] last year and we got sales contracts and had to decide which was the best way to go. Now, we’re over in Europe and Asia selling to the markets over there as well. So that’s definitely an exciting avenue to sort of be in control and not have it be at straight up studio thing where you’re done and you go home.

DC: At AFM did you guys just have a poster? “The Walking Dead” is such a huge show I’m sure there were some other parodies trying to get made and you want to be the first one out of the gate.

DS: I think on this one we were the first ones out of the gate. When we did the first Scary Movie there were actually other spoofs and parodies coming out at the same time of that movie. Then, even with Haunted House there was three or four like Paranormal Whacktivity. I really feel like this is one of the first times where an actual TV show phenomenon has actually been parodied into a feature film level. That to me speaks to where we’re at right now as a society and how we’re ingesting our media. It’s all sort of become one level. When you parody something, the base has to be there and knowing what the joke is. We may see more and more TV shows going in this direction in terms of independent feature films.

DC: You’ve been involved with so many parodies, were you a fan of them growing up?

DS: Yeah, the Zucker Brothers, I mean, the Airplane movie really got me. Prior to Airplane was just the Pink Panther stuff. I just loved Peter Sellers and the characters and the humor of Pink Panther. When Airplane hit I was definitely like, ‘I love this type of movie.’ If it came out, I saw it. I loved the Naked Gun stuff, obviously, and I felt like this film was somewhere in that Naked Gun realm. We didn’t have the budget to go do something like that but … we tried to walk in that tone of what the movie and the TV show was like and then be a little more tongue-in-cheek, I think.

DC: I think you guys worked pretty well off each other, almost like a comedy troupe.

DS: I got cast three days before we went to set and I understood, being on other ensembles, how important it is to have a good relationship with the other actors and trying to build on that. Because if you’re having fun to the side of the camera and you’re having fun on set, it will translate in front of the camera. I was probably the veteran of it all because of the amount of films I’ve done and my age. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I was the coach or anything, but I would say maybe I was the team captain.

Directed by Scott Dow and written by Tim Ogletree, The Walking Deceased stars Dave Sheridan (Scary Movie, Ghost World), Joey Oglesby (Fruitvale Station, NBC’s “Friday Night Lights”), and Tim Ogletree (Supernatural Activity). It was produced by Jonathan M. Black, Francis Casanova, Philip Marlatt, Derek Lee Nixon, Tim Ogletree, Dave Sheridan, Todd Slater, and Kurt Wehner and executive produced by Tim Fisher and Ken Tayloe.

ARC Entertainment has released The Walking Deceased into the theatres and on VOD and iTunes. Look for it NOW.

Synopsis:
THE WALKING DECEASED is the Scary Movie of the zombie genre, ripping on the biggest and best of zombie pop-culture, arguably the most crazed genre in the world. The story follows a group of survivors from all walks of the apocalypse – an idiotic Sheriff with definite coma-induced brain damage, his hardass son, and a hobo with only a crossbow to stave off the walking dead, four squabbling friends forced to survive this zombieland together, and a lonely zombie who just needs love to fully regain his warm body – who leave their once-safe mall hideout in search of the rumored Safe Haven Ranch, a refuge untouched by the zombie virus that has ravaged humanity. But despite the comforting name, they discover that this sanctuary may not be as welcoming as advertised.

Tearing apart powerhouses like The Walking Dead, Zombieland, Warm Bodies, World War Z, Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and even Romero’s iconic Night of the Living Dead, THE WALKING DECEASED rips the flesh off the spoof genre and infects it with a virus too hilarious not to spread.

Archie Comics Launching Horror Imprint; Teases Third Series to Join Afterlife and Sabrina

It’s been a good while since Archie Comics released a new issue of Afterlife with Archie (#7 came out in December 2014), and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has seemed stalled with nothing after #1 debuted in October of the same year, but things are about ramp up big time as a dedicated horror imprint is launching that will also include a mysterious third series.

Per EW, in the spring the publisher will release Afterlife with Archie #8 and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #2 under the new Archie Horror imprint. “It’s happening organically already,” said Archie Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. “You launch one book; it is what it is. You launch a companion book, and you think, ‘These seem to be speaking to each other…’  In-house we started referring to these books as the ‘Archie Horror’ books. We wanted to make it official, and when it started to look like Afterlife #8 and Sabrina #2 were going to be released around the same time, why don’t we formalize something that is already happening, which is the imprint.”

As for why there’s been such a drought since Sabrina #1 was released, Aguirre-Sacasa explained, “I could give you a dozen excuses, and none of them are really good. We really, really wanted to launch the book at New York Comic Con because it was close to Halloween. In retrospect, we should’ve delayed the launch to get a few issues in the can.  There’s no excuse, and there will never be a delay like there was been between Sabrina 1 and 2. Like, never. We are very, very lucky that we have an incredibly passionate and understanding fan base that is eager for the book.”

As for what fans can expect once Sabrina does return, Aguirre-Sacasa teased, “It’s weird because in Afterlife there are dark, dark things—but it’s also funny! Its tongue is planted firmly in its cheek. But with Sabrina, it’s really, really dark and only getting darker. We’re halfway through Issue 3 now, and I would say it’s the darkest comic book I’ve written and the weirdest comic book I’ve written.”

And what about this unidentified third series heading our way?   Aguirre-Sacasa dropped a few clues: “I can tell you that it will be centered around a major Archie character. She has appeared in one of our books before. And [it] will be in a genre we have not explored or even hinted at in Sabrina—in Afterlife, we’ve only hinted at it a tiny, tiny bit. And it will be set in the present.”

But enough about what we don’t know.  Below you’ll find the cover for Afterlife with Archie #8—an homage to The Shining that will have its characters trapped in a hotel full of ghosts—by Francesco Francavilla.  It’s due out May 6th.  Also take a look at Robert Hack’s artwork for The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #2—featuring the terrifying Madame Satan—arriving a few weeks sooner on April 15th.  Be sure to visit EW to check out some preview pages from both.

Grimm’s Bitsie Tulloch Talks Going Dark, The Royals’ Return, Game-Changing Season Finale, and Lots More!

Were you as glad as we were to see “Grimm” return last night?  Things have certainly taken a turn since Juliette’s “transformation,” and according to the actress who portrays her, Bitsie Tulloch, they’re about to get a lot darker.

She recently chatted with a group of journalists regarding her character’s humanity – or lack thereof – and what it’s been like to undergo such a drastic change.  Bitsie also teased a new Royal arriving on the scene and what’s ahead in the game-changing season finale along with discussing whether or not she considers Juliette a role model.

You’ll find all that and more below along with a preview of next week’s Episode 4.15, “Double Date.”

Q:  Can you talk about portraying this sort of new version of Juliette? What issues and challenges is the character facing now?

Bitsie Tulloch:  Psychologically, it has been such a great storyline because there’s such a push-pull with her… you know, at first she really didn’t want it. She just wanted to have her normal life back. But now that she’s sort of learning how to control the Hexenbiest within, she’s realizing just how powerful this makes her.  And to an extent, as much as she’s been able to contribute to the Scooby squad as a veterinarian and then also as somebody sort of good with a gun, this is the first time that she has sort of supernatural powers. So it’s really the question going back and forth of do I want to be normal again and be with Nick? Or do I want to stay a Hexenbiest because this is kind of fun? And I think the Hexenbiest are pretty wicked. And so she’s definitely going to the dark side, and that’s the intention. And I think that’s really where they’re going with the character, at least in the immediate future and for the rest of the season.

I’ve had pretty crazy arcs for my character since Season 1 [when] she was rather passive in order to serve the story with Nick kind of hiding everything from her.  And then in Season 2 she was in a coma and lost her memory and had this love triangle with Renard. In Season 3 she finally found out and was able to kind of join the Grimm gang, and that was a really fun season. But… this sort of really changed everything. And I was really thrilled when I saw the first script. We had no idea, and I remember texting with the cast. Everyone was like, “What? This is so crazy; what an awesome idea.” And yes, going forward it’s adding a new element to the series for sure.

Related Story:  Reggie Lee Talks Grimm, the Fans, and What’s to Come

Q:  Nick (David Giuntoli) seems almost embarrassed at this point for all the things that have happened to Juliette as a result of him being a Grimm. Why do you suppose she continues to stay with him? And how do they get over this latest wrinkle in their relationship?

Bitsie Tulloch:  Well, I think the reason they’ve stayed together thus far is that there’s a lot of love there. And it’s been one of the things in both of their lives that even though it’s sort of wreaked a lot of havoc, you know, you always go back to home. And I think he represents home for her and vice versa. And they’ve so far kind of managed to get through everything together even if it’s been tough. And so the initial question, obviously, [is] how are they going to handle this because this is the craziest thing they’ve had to deal with. Because the Hexenbiest are basically… they’re mortal enemies of the Grimms. And they just want to kill them and vice versa, which is why Juliette took so long to tell him the truth because she was terrified… that he would have a gut reaction and go after her and kill her.  Also… it’s been made apparent to her by this point that she’s incredibly powerful, more so than Adalind or Renard, who are both Hexenbiest, could ever dream of being. And she doesn’t know how to really control it yet. So if he started to attack her and she morphs into a Hexenbiest, could she kill him?

But really the question going forward is can they live like this or not? And I think she’s kind of given up hope because she looks in the mirror, and all she sees is this ugly monster. And she hasn’t really embraced it yet. So she’s like, “I can’t handle the way that you look at me when I look like this, and this is what I am now.” Because, you know, we’ve tried… Juliette tried with Henrietta, and there seems to be no cure… it’s almost becoming like a Romeo and Juliette situation. Where, yes, they’re in love, but they can’t really be together the way it is right now.

Grimm - Season 4

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about the collaboration with the writers and how much they have clued you in as to where this is going to go? If it’s going to be a permanent thing or if it’s maybe going to resolve or change at some point, either later this season or next season?

Bitsie Tulloch:  That’s a really great question. Sometimes we know more and we have a little bit of a heads-up. And then sometimes what I’ve found with the showrunners, Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt, is that they’re really open to ideas and stuff. And it’s very much a collaborative process. But a lot of the times stuff changes because the show moves pretty quickly. The [last] episode [to air] (#4.14, “Bad Luck”)… we shot in January, and it’s already airing. And they go on Facebook. They go on social media. And they see the stuff that the fans really like. And they’ll give them more of that… the Hexenbiest has been incredibly popular among the fans. And so don’t expect that to be going anywhere anytime soon.

The season finale for this season is the biggest game changer we have ever had… people will lose their minds. There’s going to be… gosh, I don’t know what I can say without giving it away other than yes, we’ve never done anything this big on the show before. So that’s going to really change everything going into Season 5. And the Juliette Hexenbiest storyline has a lot to do with that. The reality is that going forward, you’re going to see a lot of the push-pull with her psychologically wanting this power. And I think it adds a really interesting element to the story for her to turn really, really dark.

Q:  How big a role does Juliette have in the finale?

Bitsie Tulloch:  Everything. She is going to cause major, major problems for basically everyone involved. The reality is she misses Nick and she loves him. But she just can’t imagine a way for them to be able to stay together under the circumstances. She’s been told by numerous people now there’s absolutely nothing she can do about it. And so what else would you do? I mean, you have to embrace your new life. She has to go forward with that.  And she is dead set on embracing it. She’s like, “If this is how it’s going to be, then I might as well be the best Hexenbiest I can. And there’s a darkness to that that’s going to seep into her veins. And you’re not going to really see the sort of sweet, loving girlfriend that everybody’s gotten used to for the last few seasons.

Q: Moving into Season 5, especially with the game changer that you’re talking about, do you see your characters moving to different locations outside of Portland, kind of  how Adalind has moved around throughout the series? Or are you still going to keep the home base in Portland?

Bitsie Tulloch:  I’m not sure about that. I can’t imagine that “Grimm” is really ever going to take place in any other city besides Portland. Portland is the perfect setting for this because the city in and of itself has not only these luscious forests, but there’s also a little bit of an eerie quality because the weather can be… you know, it’s gray. You have these really thick forests, and they get really dark during the day. And also the city has been so great to us, and we love shooting here. We certainly haven’t run out of locations to shoot in. If anything, you might see a little bit more of a storyline with one character maybe going off to Europe or something. But otherwise I would imagine it would be pretty centered in Portland still.

Q:  You’ve talked quite a bit about Juliette’s continuing changes. Do you see her losing her humanity through this? Is that going to be less and less of a quality?

Bitsie Tulloch:  Yes. The more that sort of evil takes hold inside her, she realizes that there’s really nothing she can do to get back to her normal life. Like I said before, she really needs to embrace it. And this is not a human character anymore. She’s a witch. And she is, you know, kind of a monster. But that’s her new reality. That’s the new normal for her, so to speak. And so I think that yes, if we’re going to a really, really dark place, then that is what it would entail.

Q:  So is she worried about reactions from Rosalee and Monroe in particular?

Bitsie Tulloch:  Yes, for sure. That’s something that’s going to be resolved and sort of played out through the rest of Season 4. Initially of course, she has to do deal with Nick’s reaction. But yes. It’s scary. Her friends have known her to be one way for this amount of time… they’ve all, as a group, collectively basically been hating on Hexenbiest for years. And now she is one. She’s one of those people. And the reality is, too, that there’s probably a little bit of resentment because they did this to her, you know. They asked her to do this for them because Rosalee and Monroe were coming under so much fire. And in order to protect them, Nick needed to get his Grimm powers back. I mean, the only way to do that was to use Juliette as a vessel. And she agreed to do it. But she would never have done that if she had known this would be the side effect. This was not something that she’s initially really excited about. I think that’s something that going forward is going to be pretty complicated.

Grimm - Season 4

Q:  Is there anything else other than the finale that maybe you can tease that’s coming up, either other Wesen or just in general?

Bitsie Tulloch:  You haven’t seen the last of the Royals. There’s a new Royal who’s coming to town, who’s kind of taking charge. So that’s a storyline that’s coming up. Obviously dealing with the whole Adalind being pregnant storyline is coming up. And then it’s definitely a big episode when there is a final reveal with Juliette and her friends and their reaction to that. And then really it’s kind of about her going to the dark side going forward… this is not something that has an easy resolution.

Q:  How do you see your character being a strong female role model so far and then moving forward?

Bitsie Tulloch:  In Season 1… the storyline sort of necessitated her being slightly more passive, but… [also] being someone who is capable of holding her own, who is capable of learning this life-changing secret from her man. And just realize, “Okay, there’s nothing we can’t do together. I can handle this. And I’m going to help you in whatever way, shape, or form I can.” Also, she’s contributed a lot to solving these cases. There’s been a lot of fun scenes, especially in Season 3 where she was really into doing all this research and helping out with the whole veterinarian skills going forward.

And then as the Hexenbiest… I hope nobody really tries to do anything that Juliette’s doing as a Hexenbiest. But it’s always nice to have a very powerful female character, whether for good or evil… to just have someone who is very much in control. Who is not relying on anybody else for anything. That’s one of the differences between Adalind and Juliette. Adalind was really reliant on the Royals and was sleeping around and stuff. The Hexenbiest are, you know, very sort of sexy witches. Juliette is kind of… it’s just everything that goes forward is going to be on her terms. So even if it’s evil, she’s doing it on her terms. And she’s in control of the situation; she’s doing what she wants to do when she wants to do it.

Q: Have you met any young women out there who have identified with your character or just fans of the show that have made an impression on you?

Bitsie Tulloch:  Oh yes!  I’m very active on social media, on Twitter and Instagram and Facebook. And I try to reply whenever I can. I see a lot people saying, “I love how strong she is. I love how smart she is.” They’re really liking the Hexenbiest stuff because they’re like, “What a badass!” [They] like seeing a woman walk into a scene and just kick butt and be more powerful… the manticore scene, that was something that Nick didn’t even think he was going to be able to deal with. And Juliette just kind of instantly took control of the situation and killed him. And so I think there’s probably a little bit of cheering when stuff like that happens.

We’re definitely cheering these latest developments and can’t wait to see what happens next in Episode 4.15, “Double Date.” Check out the preview below.

“Grimm” Episode 4.15 – “Double Date” (3/27/15; 8-9 pm)

More Chatter on The X-Files Revival; Fox Close to Giving it the Green-Light

Oh, what a difference a few years and the shift we’ve seen in TV-watching habits have made.  Back at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, during a panel commemorating the 20th anniversary of “The X-Files,” the group was asked about the possibility of returning for a limited or “event” series like what Fox was doing with “24″ at that time.  Co-star Gillian Anderson said she wasn’t interested in that, but “a film would be great.

Obviously, given all the buzz lately about the return of the show to the small screen, a theatrical endeavor isn’t happening any time soon, but said television revival is looking one step closer to becoming a reality.

Per TVWise, Fox is on the verge of giving an official green-light to the return of its iconic science fiction series, which originally aired between 1993 and 2002. Per sources, the network has settled on a “short-stack” order for the revival, and while the exact size is yet-to-be-determined, it will be less than ten episodes (previously the Daily Mail reported that there will be six). The site stressed that talks with sister studio 20th Century Fox Television are still ongoing.

The plan is to close out the lingering storylines left unresolved by the second feature film, I Want to Believe, which was a big disappointment to the fans.  Both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have, sources say, agreed to reprise their roles as Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. It is understood than an offer has gone out to Mitch Pileggi as well. Other key cast members will also return.

Scheduling looks to a big factor, but production could get under way as early as this summer.

Chris Carter will pen the scripts and also serve as an executive producer; Frank Spotnitz’s involvement is so far unclear.   It is hoped that the deal with the studio and other key players (including former members of the writing staff) will close soon. According to sources, Fox is aiming to make a “big announcement” just ahead of its upfront presentation in New York City this coming May.

Stay tuned… the truth is out there!

Rings Not Actually a Prequel to The Ring Remake

There’s so much misinformation here on the world wide web that it can sometimes be impossible to tell what’s true, unless it comes directly from the horse’s mouth. We’re wiping egg off our faces here in the Dread offices today, as a big ole correction regarding Rings has come to our attention.

Erroneously reported as a prequel to the 2002 remake of The Ring, director F. Javier Gutierrez set the record straight over on Twitter this morning, clarifying the rumors and letting us know that we’ve all been wrong about this one.

Hey peeps. Rings is NOT a prequel,” he wrote, “the story takes place 13 years AFTER The Ring.”

So feel free to breathe a big ole sigh of relief, those of you who were worried that the film would center on the origins of Samara and the infamous tape!

As previously reported, Alex Roe (The 5th Wave) has nabbed the male lead in the film, starring opposite Italian actress Matilda Lutz. He will be playing Holt, who is the boyfriend to Lutz’s character and becomes distant from her after watching the tape.

Related Story: First Look at Rings Shows Return of Samara

Rings will hit theaters on November 13, 2015.

Gutierrez is directing from a script written by Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka, and Jacob Aaron Estes.

Based on a Japanese cult success, the first U.S. film went on to gross $249 million at the worldwide box office. That was enough to justify a sequel, which didn’t match the first one’s B.O. power but still grossed $160 million worldwide.

We don’t know about you guys, but we are REALLY not feeling seeing images of Arnold Schwarzenegger as a gray-haired Terminator. We get that (for whatever reason) the flesh on a Terminator can apparently age, but man, it’s kind of a startling reminder of mortality, is it not?

In any event, check out some new Terminator Genisys eye candy below courtesy of Empire Online and Coming Soon. Also, is it just us or does Schwarzenegger’s face look as if it’s sliding off of his head on the Empire Magazine cover? I mean, who OK’d that?
