Thanks to theaters like the Alamo Drafthouse, people can catch screenings of old movies on the big screen that they either missed or weren’t alive to enjoy. Fortunately for Vincent Price fans, they’ll soon have an opportunity to catch one of the beloved actor’s most memorable films.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vincent and Mary Price’s highly sought-after cookbook A Treasury of Great Recipes, the folks at the Alamo Drafthouse will screen The Abominable Dr. Phibes at all of their locations during September and October. So if you’ve never experienced this classic in a theater, now’s your chance to solve that problem once and for all.

Here’s the exceptionally cool part. In addition to screening the movie, those who attend this unique event will enjoy the Feast, a five-course meal pulled directly from Vincent and Mary’s cookbook. To top it all off, the couple’s daughter, Victoria, will be on hand to discuss her father’s work and share the multimedia presentation Explore, Savor, Celebrate: Life with Vincent Price.

You can find screening dates and locations below. In addition to the Feast, tickets to the event include a copy of A Treasury of Great Recipes, which, from I’ve heard, is definitely worth owning.

Amsterdam Plans Its Very Own Blade-Inspired Blood Rave

Remember the opening scene in Blade where all the vampires are enjoying a dance party under a geyser of blood? Well, something like that is taking place in Amsterdam later this year, though the event’s organizers are still working out the logistics of the proposed shindig.

According to the NL Times, nearly 3,000 guests have already signed up for Amsterdam’s so-called Blood Rave, which will spray partygoers with approximately 5,000 liters of blood or a suitable blood-like alternative. Since the consistency of blood would likely wreak havoc on the venue’s plumbing, the folks working behind the scenes are still trying to figure things out.

“After a long search we have developed a special sprinkler system with pipes running across the ceiling and thus making us able to spray blood over the crowd. We’ve already tested it a number of times a substance resembling blood. It is pushing the borders, but we want to see how far we can go,” an event organizer recently said of rave’s main attraction.

The Blood Rave is set to take place on Halloween in Amsterdam. For more information about the gathering, take a look at the official Facebook page. If you need a reminder of how the Blade scene unfolded, then you should take a moment to investigate the video below.

Buffalo Bill’s Silence of the Lambs House Is Now on the Market

If you love director Jonathan Demme’s classic thriller Silence of the Lambs and you’re in the market for a new place to live, look no further than the house occupied by Buffalo Bill in the aforementioned motion picture. It also comes with a pretty nifty piece of movie memorabilia.

TMZ reports that for just $300,000 you can own the residence once occupied by one of the creepiest killers in cinematic history. Of course, the interior of the house looks a bit different than it did in Silence of the Lambs. It also lacks a pit where you can encourage guests to rub lotion on their skin, though it may come with a hose. Whatever you do, please don’t quote me on that.

In addition to photos taken during production, the house also comes with a book signed by Jodie Foster and Jonathan Demme that reads, “Thank you so much for letting us use your beautiful house for our scary movie.” There’s also a vintage caboose/pool house out back. Nice!

Still not sold on the house? Need some additional info before cutting a check? Take a look at the official Realtor.com listing, which includes a number of interior and exterior photos of the house. As you can tell, the owners have taken very good care of the property over the years.

SpectreVision, the production company founded and partnered by Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah, and Josh C. Waller, also participates in an annual horror film/music festival; and a very impressive lineup has been announced for this year’s event.

SpectreFest 2015 opens with Cooties, in which Wood co-stars, and closes with Avishai Sivan’s Tikkun, which won Best Actor, Best Israeli Feature, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography at this summer’s Jerusalem Film Festival. Sandwiched in-between are several Los Angeles premieres (Sun Choke, Love & Peace, and Nasty Baby); screenings of the highly anticipated Goodnight Mommy, Deathgasm, and The Final Girls; plus tributes to filmmakers Larry Fessenden and E. Elias Merhige (if you’ve never seen Begotten, you’re in for quite an experience!) and lots more.

SpectreFest is a hand-picked look at the latest and greatest in progressive genre films and forward-thinking music from around the world that challenge our grip on reality. It’s a place where unexpected elements of the fantastic gather together — offering cold shadows, distant melodies, forgotten memories, and new hauntings.

“It’s a deeply satisfying experience to put together an annual list of the films we feel push the envelope of what genre cinema can be and to bring these sometimes under-appreciated films to Los Angeles,” says Noah.

SpectreFest takes place during the months of September and October in conjunction with Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theatre, 611 N. Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90036.  The 2015 edition marks the fest’s third year already and is presented in association with the new premium video streaming service Shudder.

For more info visit the SpectreFest website.  Also check out SpectreVision.com.

We can’t stay in denial about “Hannibal’s” impending series finale any longer as Episode 3.13, “The Wrath of the Lamb,” is on its way next weekend…

But we can savor the moment with a look at a dozen images from the ep, in which Will maneuvers Dr. Lecter and Dolarhyde into position for their final showdown. Based on the way things have been handled thus far on the show, we’re pretty confident it’s going to be glorious.

In a desperate bid to slay Francis Dolarhyde (guest star Richard Armitage), Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) engineers a cunning ploy utilizing Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). Upon learning of his plan, Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) voices concerns that Will’s actions may put not only his life in peril, but the lives of those around him.

Death-Scort Service (2015)

Death-Scort Service PosterStarring Krystal Pixie Adams, Amethist Young, Bailey Paige, Caitlyn Dailey, Alice Reigns, Lisa Marie Kart, Ashley Lynn Caputo, Paula Tsurara, Rachael Shaw, Geneva Whitmore, Joe Makowski, Bob Glazier, Evan Stone, Joel D. Wynkoop

Directed by Sean Donohue

If you feel that the mainstream slasher genre lacks a proper set of balls, then look no further than Sean Donohue’s ridiculously gory horror flick Death-Scort Service. Fans who long for the days when hardcore violence and shameless nudity went hand-in-hand should walk away from this experience with every itch painfully scratched. It’s definitely not for the easily offended, but then again, if you’re reading this review, chances are you’re well aware of what you’re about to watch. And if you’re not, well, I don’t think I can adequately prepare you for the things you’re getting ready to see.

The Indiegogo-funded slasher (which featured perks such as T-shirts, stickers, and lacy underwear) doesn’t offer up much in the way of story, but again, that’s not necessarily an issue. Why complicate full-frontal nudity and gratuitous violence with a plot? The setup is pretty simple: A group of call girls discover that someone is picking off prostitutes one by one in an increasingly shocking number of ways. Although a pair of ladies attempt to track down the scumbag responsible for these horrendous crimes, it becomes very clear that they have absolutely no idea who they’re up against. Like I said, it’s not wholly original, but Donohue has other ways to keep you entertained.

A word to the wise: If rape, torture, and murder immediately make your stomach flip, then you’re in the wrong part of town, pal. Death-Scort Service is a mean, tasteless, and unapologetically violent flick. Critics may bash the movie for a number of different reasons, but they can never accuse the filmmakers of not thoroughly understanding their audience. And while things often went a little too far over-the-top for my personal tastes, I can’t fault Donohue and company for delivering exactly what hardcore horror fans want to see. The camera doesn’t flinch when it comes to the many on-screen eviscerations, which will certainly please those who want an in-your-face experience.

What makes these moments of extreme violence so effective is the film’s decidedly low-fi aesthetic. It feels like something that slithered out of a sleazy time warp, having accidentally popped into the 2000s when it should have arrived during the days of big-box VHS tapes and impossibly costly rewind fees. My friends and I would have rented this thing and paused it every time we thought parental units were headed to the basement to spoil the fun. I say all of this lovingly, of course, because like most horror fans of a certain age, I’m frequently wracked with waves of vivid nostalgia.

Is Death-Scort Service flawless? Hardly. Although Donohue’s direction is more than capable, his insanely limited budget has a tendency to push to the surface when you want it to fade into the background. That said, he certainly didn’t skimp when in regards to the FX. And while the performances are mostly sturdy, they’re about what you’d expect from this kind of low-budget, DIY genre flick. The actresses aren’t distractingly bad, mind you, but those who crave nuance and subtly are most certainly barking up the wrong tree. Sorry if that completely spoils your fun.

Of course, fans of Joel D. Wynkoop (The Bite, Lost Faith) should enjoy the veteran no-budget actor’s turn as Angus. As I’ve said countless times in the past (and will again in the future, I’m sure), the guy is always a joy to see, even when he doesn’t have very much to do. Wynkoop has no trouble stealing his scenes, but then again, die-hard fans already knew this. But it’s always worth pointing out.

At the end of the day, there’s absolutely nothing about Death-Scort Service that’s subtle; it hits you repeatedly about the head and neck until the final credits roll. Sometimes it’s with nudity, sometimes it’s with violence. Occasionally, you get both. Again, that’s definitely not a complaint. I found myself enjoying the flick even when I felt dirty, which, I guess, is a compliment. Donohue and company know their audience is filled with filthy freaks, and they’re more than happy to supply our demand.

New Mad Max Game TV Commercial Online

An awesome new TV commercial for Mad Max has found its way online, and it has us dying to be chromed and witnessed. It’s certainly refreshing to hear Max (voiced by Bren Foster) talking in an Australian accent, something that was sorely missing for the most part in Fury Road, despite the fact that, y’know, it’s set in Australia.

There’s only those who live, those who die, and those who stand in my way,” a grumpy sounding Max narrates to us. Indeed, the game is something of a godsend because after watching the Mad Max movies we all wish that we could drive fast cars along a desert wasteland and blast anything that moves with a big-ass shotgun.

It’s no good looking down at your feet and denying it; we all felt that way.

Well, on September 4th, that dream will finally become a reality.

New Para Elisa Trailer Keeps Watch Over You

Imagine answering an ad for a babysitter and finding out the person you’re supposed to be watching over is the same age as you… and quite deranged.  That’s the general plot outline of Dark Sky Films’ upcoming release of Para Elisa, and today we have the movie’s trailer to share.

A job at a magnificent house owned by a famous musician seems too good to be true – and it is – in the tension-filled horror film Para Elisa. The acclaimed new Spanish film comes to DVD and VOD on September 1, 2015, from Dark Sky Films.

Debuting writer-director Juanra Fernandez crafts a breathless horror with Para Elisa, a film that plays out with violent intensity and escalates to a nightmarish climax that will leave viewers asking if people are just things to be played with.

Synopsis:
Desperate for some post-graduation cash, party girl Ana (Ona Casamiquela, Eva) answers a babysitting ad. She arrives for an interview at the elegant home of Diamantina (Luisa Gavasa, Flesh Memories), a former child prodigy pianist who is now an eccentric old woman who collects antique toys and dolls. Ana is disturbed by Diamantina’s odd behavior and horrified to discover that her child, Elisa (Ana Turpin, Bandolero), is not a child but rather a deranged woman her own age. Before Ana really understands what’s happening, she finds herself trapped in the house and made to serve as Elisa’s new toy – a toy that like many others before it may well be broken.

Hellblade Dev Diary Talks Getting Into The Mind Of The Mentally Ill

$

In 2007, I was blown away by Heavenly Sword. This isn’t the typical case of “launch-title goggles” or fanboy praise either; I realize that the gameplay of heavenly sword left much to be desired. It was the narrative that pulled me in, and the exceptional facial animation that dropped my jaw. The way characters emoted brought a realism to the fantastical narrative. The story would prove a bit too nebulous for many, but I loved the way the looseness would let my mind wander and explore. Since then, I was similarly floored by Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and impressed by DmC: Devil May Cry. Ninja Theory has proven itself brilliant with new IPs, and capable of humanizing and expanding on even the most well established franchise.

Unfortunately, the studio has not had the financial success to match their brilliance. As much as a retelling of an ancient Chinese myth in the setting of an apocalyptic future where robots cart all humans away into a virtual reality slave camp is an amazing game and work of art, it isn’t exactly marketable to the frothing masses that demand either hyper-violent splatter-fests or spreadsheets of stats accompanied by chibi knights brandishing swords the size of a rhinoceros. I’m not saying that all gamers fall into these categories, but enough do that vast commercial success has eluded the geniuses at Ninja Theory.

Rather than bashing their heads against a wall again or selling their souls, Ninja Theory has refocused on making a smaller scale game. While still maintaining a AAA look, the independent downloadable title will be a more focused journey that will allow the developers to deliver the experience in their own way while saving budget. They are once again here to tell a story, and Hellblade promises to deliver in an equally exciting and terrifying way. Check out the trailer:

Mental illness is no joke, and very often mishandled in the media for either comedic effect or cheap characterization. Mentally or psychologically impaired characters are there to be nuts until someone points out that it was all because their family was murdered, at which point the audience shares a self satisfied smile and nod, understanding the true depth and complexity of the unfortunate soul while learning a little bit about themselves, too. Except in the real world, mental illness is more often an untreated terror that leads people to the streets or prison, with no warm fuzzy resolution beyond the dull haze of anti-psychotics as you try to find anywhere that will employ a mental patient living in a halfway house.

If you couldn’t tell, I feel very strongly about the issue. Ninja Theory has earned my trust with their previous titles, but even I am skeptical how it will all turn out. Luckily, development has been almost transparent, with frequent developer diaries updating us on the status of the game. The most recent dev diary explores this exact concern:

It is inspiring to see a company taking the issue so seriously. In a game where the horrors come from your own damaged psyche, it is easy to oversimplify by making the world just a reflection of bad things that happened to the character. To treat it in such a binary way, where the evil fish men must clearly be a reflection of the trauma of your fisherman dad being lost at sea, is a misrepresentation of the warping effects of mental illness. Psychosis restructures the world around you, misinterpreting stimuli and tailoring your responses. It is a powerful distinction from the “normal person wracked with guilt” narrative that so often passes for real mental illness in media.

From what little I’ve seen of the gameplay, there’s still a long way to go before the game is polished enough for its 2016 release date. I will be following this one closely, both as a huge fan of Ninja Theory and someone who cares about the mentally ill. If anyone can tackle the subject matter, Ninja Theory can. Stay tuned for more updates as they develop, and follow development yourself on the OfficialNinjaTheory Youtube Channel.

James Wan Working on a Giant Monster Movie?

File this one under “One Can Dream,” folks. There’s not much to go on here, and honestly, it doesn’t really sound like there’s much to talk about – yet, but over on that little thing called Twitter, a fan asked James Wan how come he hasn’t done a giant monster movie yet. His answer was quite hopeful.

It’s the “Closer than you know” part that has us salivating more than just a little bit. Imagine the wondrous chaos Wan could conjure up with some titanic beast having its way with a city… maybe several behemoths.  Can you imagine a Godzilla movie with Wan at the helm?

If you’ll excuse me, I’m off to ice down my nerd boner. Thanks.

Fox is in need of a hit. With both the second Hitman and fourth Fantastic Four films tanking at the box office, all eyes are on another X-Men and the Apes (man, what a dream spinoff that would be, huh?) to turn things around.

Speaking of the latter, some quick casting news has arrived as Deadline is reporting that Gabriel Chavarria (pictured; Low Riders, “Aquarius) is in talks to play one of the third film’s two human leads in War of the Planet of the Apes.

Matt Reeves returns to direct, and the film is shooting for an October start date in Vancouver.

Look for more on this one soon!

Man Dresses Up as Michael Myers to Propose to His Girlfriend

When 30-year-old Alec Wells decided to pop the question to his girlfriend, Boys and Ghouls podcast host Katherine Canipe, he didn’t drop to one knee in the middle of an expensive restaurant or hire a singer to make the announcement during a concert. Instead, Wells dressed up like horror icon Michael Myers and staged a recreation of a famous scene from John Carpenter’s Halloween.

Since his girlfriend (now fiancee) is a huge horror fan, popping around the corner in a neighborhood dressed as a notorious cinematic serial killer didn’t send her screaming for the proverbial hills. Instead, she burst into tears and accepted his incredibly unique proposal. Although some might think it’s a little strange to propose in such a bizarre manner, Canipe seemed over the moon with it.

Curious to see the proposal go down? Check out the video below.

Rob Zombie’s 31 Should Hit Theaters Early Next Year

Rob Zombie’s upcoming horror flick 31 has received a lot of coverage at Dread Central over the past few months, but one piece of information has eluded us: When can we expect to see this thing on the big screen? Although we don’t have a proper release date to share with the masses, we do have an idea of when it might hit theaters. It’s vague stuff, but it’s better than nothing.

During a recent chat with the folks at Bloody Disgusting during the Alternative Press Music Awards, Zombie offered up a few details about 31. And while Rob stopped short of giving us an exact date, he did reveal that the movie could enjoy an early 2016 release. Do tell, Zombie. Do tell.

Right now, we’re almost done editing. We have a few more weeks probably of editing and then we’ve gotta do some visual effects and some post production and color timing. Really just working on the music. It’s really just the final stages. So we’ll probably be completely finished by November. And it’ll be out early next year,” Zombie explained during the interview.

Are you unfamiliar with 31? Never fear — we have a synopsis.

31 follows five carnival workers who are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large secret compound known as Murder World. Once there, they have 12 hours to survive a terrifying game called 31 in which “The Heads” – murderous maniacs dressed as clowns – are released to hunt them down and kill them.

As we previously reported, Zombie’s latest cinematic endeavors features an impressive cast, including Meg Foster as Venus Virgo; Judy Geeson as Sister Dragon; Jeff Daniel Phillips as Roscoe; Jane Carr as Sister Serpent; Richard Brake as Doom-Head; Ginger Lynn as Cherry Bomb, Doom-Head’s very special friend; Malcolm McDowell as Father Murder, the owner of Murder World; David Ury as Schizo-Head; Daniel Roebuck as Pastor Victor; Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs as Panda Thomas, the manager of a traveling roadshow known as “The Venus Lux Happy Time Fun Show”; Pancho Moler as Sick-Head; Tracy Walter as Lucky Leo; E.G. Daily as Sex-Head; and Torsten Voges as Death-Head as well as Sheri Moon Zombie, Lew Temple, Bari Suzuki, and Devin Sidell.

World War Z Sequel Update

Like it or hate it (probably hate), World War Z grossed $589 million worldwide so a sequel is inevitably happening. While it’s still in the early stages, writer Steven Knight offered the following update.

“I was approached with the idea of, ‘How do we move this along?’ so who could resist? I think the beauty of the first film was the way that it never paused for breath. It never spent a moment thinking, ‘Hang on a minute; we’d better tell the audience what this is all about.’ It stayed in the moment; it stayed with that person.”

Brad Pitt is expected to return for the sequel, which is aiming for a 2017 release. The first film was plagued by reshoots and ended up being rated PG-13, a crushing disappointment for zombie fans, and if the above quote is accurate, then it looks like we’ll be getting another straightforward action pic rather than a true living dead picture. Sigh. Maybe one day the franchise will become tired and they’ll reboot it using Max Brook’s original novel as, y’know, the template for the plot.
