Patrick Kindlon and Black Mask Team Up for There’s Nothing There and More

Some big comic news hit the Net today… Black Mask Studios has signed a three-book deal with writer Patrick Kindlon (SHIELD: Quake), whose creator-owned comic book We Can Never Go Home was a breakout hit for the company.

Per THR, Kindlon’s first comic book under the newly inked deal will be a horror series titled There’s Nothing There, co-created with artist Maria Llovet, set for release in April. The stylish horror tale centers on celebrity-socialite Reno Selleti, who joins a friend for an Eyes Wide Shut-type party mostly for the laughs, but the joke ends quickly in this hallucinatory thriller about losing yourself in the bright lights and finding yourself at rock bottom.

Kindlon will follow There’s Nothing There with a second volume of We Can Never Go Home. The third book in the deal has not yet been announced.

We Can Never Go Home, co-written by Kindlon and his writing partner, Matthew Rosenberg (Rocket Racoon, 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank), is a tale of superpowered teenage misfits on the run. The debut volume was critically acclaimed and is currently in development as a TV series at a major studio.

Kindlon, who also sings for the hardcore bands Self Defense Family and Drug Church, has been with Black Mask since the company’s launch, contributing a story to Occupy Comics and co-writing Twelve Reasons to Die with Rosenberg, Ghostface Killah, and RZA.

“Pat brings a real edge and fearlessness to his stories,” said Black Mask co-founder Matt Pizzolo. “It’s the same passion you hear in his singing, but on the page it manifests as these dangerous characters living on the fringes of hypnotically intriguing worlds. And he’s not afraid to push the boundaries, to shake things up, which is precisely the kind of approach comics need right now. Comics need bold ideas and disruptive thinking, and those are Pat’s specialties.”

Some quick casting news coming in for the currently filming Cult of Chucky as Coming Soon is reporting that Grace Lynn Kung (Miss Sloane) has joined the production to play the role of hard-edged Claire.

About Cult of Chucky:
Cult of Chucky, an all-new spellbinding chapter of the Child’s Play thriller franchise, began principal photography in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on January 9, 2017. The seventh film in the blockbuster series will be released in a bone-chilling Unrated Version on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD in fall 2017 — just in time for Halloween. Packed with the franchise’s signature blend of horror and demented humor, Cult of Chucky is the latest production from Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production entity of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Grace Lynn Kung

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 30 years since Chucky first terrified moviegoers in Child’s Play,” said Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Universal 1440 Entertainment. “Since then the films have generated millions in worldwide box office revenue. Now Chucky’s back with more scores to settle in his trademark twisted style, and you can bet he won’t stop until he gets his revenge.”

Fiona Dourif (Curse of Chucky) returns as Nica, the wheelchair-bound heroine framed by Chucky for the bloody murders of her entire family. She’s joined by franchise veterans Alex Vincent (Child’s Play, Child’s Play 2) and Jennifer Tilly (Monsters, Inc., Bride of Chucky), with Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) once again providing the eerie, unnerving voice of the demon doll possessed by the spirit of a maniacal serial killer.

Don Mancini, writer of the Child’s Play franchise, is the executive producer of the new film, which he also directs from his original script. Longtime franchise producer David Kirschner (The Pagemaster, Frailty) is joined this time by Ogden Gavanski (Warm Bodies, Immortals). The production team includes special-effects guru and associate producer Tony Gardner (Zombieland, Curse of Chucky), director of photography Michael Marshall (“Killjoys”), production designer Craig Sandells (Mother’s Day), and costume designer Patricia J. Henderson (ATM).

Synopsis:
Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all.

Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky’s now grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her, he’ll have to get past Tiffany (Oscar nominee Jennifer Tilly), Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.

Exclusive Haunted Museum News – Zak Bagans to Display One of the Most Dangerous Paranormal Possessions in the World

Excited about visiting Zak Bagans’ Haunted Museum when it opens? Of course you are! This latest story though… this latest addition to Zak’s house of madness? Well, it’s going to be up to you whether or not you take your chances and take a look.

Zak has just informed us exclusively that he’s now in possession of the infamous “Peggy the Doll,” which he obtained from its previous owner, Jayne Harris from England. Featured on an episode of his series “Deadly Possessions,” Peggy is not for the faint of heart. It’s said you can be affected by Peggy by just looking at her… in person or in photos. As a result “Deadly Possessions” aired the episode with a disclaimer for viewers: a first for both the show and the paranormal in general.

“Peggy the Doll” has a long and storied paranormal history. It’s said to be one of the most haunted and dangerous dolls in the world. It is believed that Peggy is possessed by the spirit of a woman born in 1946 in London’s Holland Park who died of a chest-related condition – possibly an asthma attack – and psychics have speculated that said woman could be of Jewish descent and may have ties to the Holocaust. We may never know the exact identity of the entity inhabiting the doll, but her effects on people have been well documented. It’s also believed that in addition to causing violent migraines and severe chest pains, the entity can even affect a person’s dreams and predict tragedies. Back in 2015 a video of Peggy hit YouTube, and it’s been reported that over 80 people who watched it suffered chest pains, nausea, and crippling headaches. This is something that… no matter what you believe… should not be trifled with.

I was very skeptical of this claim until the doll caused very terrifying activity during our filming, including: manifestations of flies, camera problems, negative mental effects on me, poltergeist activity,” said Bagans. “Peggy the Doll will be displayed at The Haunted Museum, but releases will have to be signed should visitors want to see her.

He added, “I’ve met many haunted dolls, including Robert the Doll and Harold the Doll, but none have ever affected me as bad as Peggy the Doll. When we were filming with her on ‘Deadly Possessions,’ flies manifested outta nowhere and swarmed me, and then I had a dark energy overcome me. I interviewed a woman who told me while crying she suffered a heart attack within seconds of looking at her; there was no doubting her. We also did a seance with Peggy and a well-known medium, and we heard a typewriter start typing by itself.

In closing, Zak told us, “Peggy is the type of haunted doll that will put your bravery to the test if you will look at her or not, and there will be strict guidelines for those who choose to view her exhibit at The Haunted Museum, including signing releases.

So the question is… how brave are you?

The massive structure is also brimming with oddities from all over the world, including an actual mummy, Michael Jackson’s death scene chair, Ed Gein’s cauldron, Dr. Jack Kervorkian’s van, a throng of working antique mechanical dolls, and so very much more.

Sundance 2017: Psycho Shower Documentary 78/52 Acquired by IFC Midnight

When we first told you about the new documentary entitled 78/52, which screened at this year’s Sundance Film Fest, it seemed like it had IFC Midnight’s name all over it… and indeed it did!  Per Deadline, the company has acquired U.S. rights to the Alexandre O. Philippe-directed documentary.

78/52 deconstructs the infamous shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and features interviews with Guillermo del Toro, Bret Easton Ellis, Karyn Kusama, Eli Roth, Walter Murch, Peter Bogdanovich, and more, including Janet Leigh’s daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Anthony Perkins’ son, Osgood Perkins. Philippe wrote the script, which breaks down the scene that became a template for how to terrorize a movie audience with a combination of imagery and suggestion.

Wonder where the title came from? It refers to the number of setups (78) and cuts (52) in the scene, which took one quarter of Psycho’s four-week shooting schedule.

The film is an Exhibit A Pictures production, produced by Kerry Deignan Roy and co-produced by Oliver Schwehm of ARTE G.E.I.E., Chad Herschberger of Milkhaus, Annick Mahnert of Screen Division, and Robert Muratore of EXA. Felix Gill of Sensorshot Productions, Joey Porcelli, and Randy Pharo served as executive producers.

“It’s a great honor to be partnering with IFC Films and working closely with them to bring 78/52 to horror and documentary fans across the U.S,” said Philippe. “Their love of smart genre cinema shines through in everything they do, and 78/52 will undoubtedly flourish with their savvy, forward-thinking support. Our team is very excited about this partnership.”

IFC co-presidents Jonathan Sehring and Lisa Schwartz called the doc “a thrilling piece of work about one of the greatest films ever made. Alexandre Philippe has made a film that captures why all of us have become obsessed not only with Psycho but cinema itself. We are excited to work with the entire team to get this film out to the world.”

Expect release info soon!

Rest in Peace: John Hurt

Another crushing blow for the film industry has come as the wonderful character actor John Hurt has passed on at age 77. Hurt had battles with intestinal trouble and even cancer over the past few years, and we’re truly sad to hear that he’s gone. At least his pain is over.

Hurt left us with a treasure trove of great memories, from his genre defining role in Alien to appearances in V for Vendetta, Hellboy, Skeleton Key, Roger Corman’s Frankenstein Unbound, and many more. His career spanned six decades, and he had the uncanny ability to raise a project’s profile just by appearing in it.

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to thank John and revere him for all that he gave to every role he was in. Our sincerest of condolences go out to his friends, family members, and constituents. Bless you, sir. Godspeed.

Exclusive: Watch the Second Teaser for Dylan Dog-Based Series Dylan

$

International comic fans may be familiar with a series called Dylan Dog from Italian writer Tiziano Sclavi, which follows the exploits of the titular paranormal investigator. It was made into a live-action film back in 2011 with none other than Superman actor Brandon Routh in the lead role, and big surprise… it sucked.

A new TV adaptation is currently in the works, although several character names had to be changed as the rights to the series are still held by Hollywood. So Dylan Dog is now Dylan Dawn, along with a few other variations.

The pilot for “Dylan” will be released for free around April, with a 6-episode first season planned to follow. We were given exclusive access to the show’s second trailer, which we’re honored to share below.

Directed by Kevin Kopacka, “Dylan” stars Ford Everett, Alberto Finadri, Denise Ankel, Harry Baer, and Philipp Jablonski.

Pilot Synopsis:
First, some info on the comics – Dylan Dog is a massively popular Italian horror comic, created by Tiziano Sclavi in 1986 (Sclavi would later write the script for an unofficial Dylan Dog tie-in – Dellamorte Dellamore, aka Cemetery Man).

Dylan Dog is a private investigator specializing in nightmares. He lives  with his eccentric assistant, Groucho, and solves cases dealing with the paranormal.

Seeing as the copyright to Dylan Dog still lies in Hollywood (adaptation Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is a film similar in name only to the popular comic and hated by fans), some of the characters had to be slightly altered; yet, the atmosphere and feel are kept as close as possible to the source material.

Kevin Kopacka produced, directed, scored, and edited the pilot episode, titled “Dream of the Living Dead” – which he co-wrote with fellow director Alex Bakshaev. Besides the titular character Dylan (renamed as “Dylan Dawn”), the pilot will feature alterations of other Dylan Dog characters such as Groucho, Inspektor Bloch, Madame Trelkovski, Jenkins, Morgana, and Xarabas.

After a fight with her husband, Corrado, Morgana’s world seems somehow different – cold, dark, and rotten. Trapped between reality and nightmare, she has no choice but to seek out “Nightmare Investigator” Dylan Dawn. But can Dylan save her from her fate, or is she forever caught in a maze of bad dreams?

“Dylan” stars Ford Everett as Dylan, Denise Ankel as Morgana, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder veteran Harry Baer as Inspektor Mahlow. The pilot is currently in post-production, but the rough edit has already been finished. It will have a run time of 40 minutes and will be released free for all online around April. Based on the reaction to the pilot, a 6-episode first season might get made (though at the moment it is unknown if for TV or based online).

Director’s Statement:
The idea is to have a 6-episode first season. As with the comics, each episode will be different in style and atmosphere to the one before, but there will be an overarching story with Xarabas planned to appear in the season finale.

Expect it to be a mixture of the Dylan comics L’alba dei morti viventi and Morgana with nods to Italian classic horror movies such as Dellamorte Dellamore, Zombi, Demoni, and Burial Ground. It will be very atmospheric, artistic, and (hopefully) even scary but still with comedic elements. A full trailer will be released before the launch of the episode.

As a closing statement, I will say that this show is made for the fans and is in no way meant to be disrespectful to its source material. I hope you (especially the Italian fans!) will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it!

Last week’s “Face Off” clip went over so well with you cats that we’ve gone and got you another one to dig on!

Episode 11.02 – “The Devil Is in the Details” (airs 1/31/17)
The artists arrive at the gorgeous Westminster Presbyterian Church, where they are greeted by McKenzie, who tells them that each team will be creating an angel and devil character that reflects the teams’ own good and bad qualities – but there’s also an important twist; both makeups will need to be on a single model!

Pressure is high in this first elimination challenge, and there are immediate conceptual concerns as some of the artists struggle to decide which traits they should use to represent themselves, while others worry about biting off more work than they can chew from a volume of work standpoint.

Once back at the lab, some of the artists are brimming with confidence and race out of the gate, while one team decides to take a big risk in hopes of blowing away the judges and the rest of the competition.

It all comes to a head on the reveal stage where one team of all-stars becomes the first one to be eliminated from the competition.

The GCBRO Is Killing Bigfoot in February; Sneak Peek Videos Offer Protection

Stories about Bigfoot have been around forever, and they show no signs of slowing down.  However, for the GCBRO, it goes deeper than just legends. This group has a mission: “Killing Bigfoot.” And beginning this February on Destination America, you’ll be able to follow along on their quest.

As you might imagine, this has sparked some controversy, and the show promises to evenly portray both sides of the “Kill vs. No-Kill” argument from the crypto-zoological community while depicting the GCBRO’s methods of hunting for this fabled creature.

We have more details and few sneak peeks below, including an exclusive clip. If you’re in Canada, it’s already airing there – clue us in on whether to watch or not!

From the Press Release:
Deep in the heart of Texas, Bobby Hamilton has been on the hunt for Bigfoot ever since encountering the monster as a child. Decades later, the world still doesn’t have definitive proof of Bigfoot’s existence. That’s where Bobby, his friend Jim Lansdale, and their team of monster hunters, known as the Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization (GCBRO), have decided to take matters into their own hands. Down South, the hunters believe a sleeker, faster, and more aggressive type of Bigfoot is attacking people’s homes, farm animals, and pets.

In the all-new series “KILLING BIGFOOT,” GCBRO is on a mission to help families terrorized by Bigfoot and prove once and for all that the fabled creature exists by killing one specimen – and providing a body of definitive scientific proof. The six-episode first season of “KILLING BIGFOOT” premieres Saturday, February 4, at 10/9c on Destination America.

Under Bobby and Jim’s leadership, the members of GCBRO come from vastly diverse backgrounds, including civil engineering, IT and corporate technology, and private investigation and surveillance. The team also includes former cops, National Guard and military veterans, a medical tech, and even a coroner’s “body removal specialist.” GCBRO’s main goal is to help those frightened by alleged recent encounters with Bigfoot, but however well-intentioned GCBRO’s mission may be, their extreme objective to kill even one Bigfoot puts them at odds with many in the crypto-zoological community who do not want to see one dead.

“KILLING BIGFOOT” is produced by Gryphon Productions/Monster Hunters Productions for Destination America. For Gryphon Productions, Peter von Puttkamer is executive producer, and Sheera von Puttkamer is producer. For Destination America, Fay Yu is executive producer, Jane Latman is general manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, American Heroes Channel, and Destination America.

This season of “KILLING BIGFOOT” includes the following episodes:

Season Premiere: Saturday, February 4 at 10/9c
Three members of GCBRO speak at the Honobia Bigfoot Conference in Oklahoma, where they meet angry resistance from those who want Bigfoot left in peace. The team is called away to Louisiana, where new evidence has been unearthed following an alleged Bigfoot hit and run: a tiny primate-like skull with teeth, which they send to a DNA lab for testing. Several locals have reported seeing a small orangutan-like creature and hearing monkey-like sounds near the woods. GCBRO organize a night hunt during which they have a frightening close encounter and then possibly capture footage of Bigfoot itself.

Saturday, February 11 at 10/9c
A report comes in to the GCBRO of a terrifying Bigfoot encounter on the Dyess family’s 5,000-acre wooded farm in the swampy Sabine River area of southwest Louisiana. Family members have heard mysterious screaming at night and taken casts of huge, unidentified animal tracks found on the property. GCBRO steps in to try to bring peace to the Dyess farm and, in the process, has a possible nighttime encounter with Bigfoot. Meanwhile, GCBRO has a run-in with their old teammate-turned-rival Dr. Web Sentell, a neuro-psychologist and Bigfoot no-kill advocate who wants to prove he can find one of the creatures using a gentle, alternative: flute playing and food offerings. The benefits of killing or not killing Bigfoot in the South becomes a major argument between Sentell and GCBRO.

Saturday, February 18 at 10/9c
With cases flooding into GCBRO headquarters, Jim is intrigued by the reports but overwhelmed by requests for assistance. They need new hunters if they want to keep up with the demand. While Jim and Don Don visit a biker whose family had a face-to-face encounter with Bigfoot deep in the Mississippi woods, the process of interviewing new recruits begins: culminating in a series of challenging tests. The candidate search might be just as difficult as finding Bigfoot itself, but a night hunt with the most viable recruits shows off the talents they could bring to GCBRO.

Saturday, February 25 at 10/9c
The team gets excited by a report from a woman in east Texas, Anna, who claims she shot at Bigfoot in her backyard to protect her daughter and save her dog. A wounded monster should be easy to track down. GCBRO races down to meet her and check out the game camera photos she captured. Anna shows them an unidentified hair sample she found attached to her shoe that is sent away for DNA analysis. Before embarking on their night hunt back at Anna’s property, the team visits a nearby sighting eyewitness who leads the team to possible Bigfoot nests. That evening, the hunt reveals Bigfoot trails, tracks and some very close calls.

Saturday, March 4 at 10/9c
GCBRO member Don goes on a local TV show to reach out to the public to come forward with their Bigfoot sightings in the Mississippi area. GCBRO receives a report from a frightened rural family that claims Bigfoot killed several of their dogs and even attacked a young man. The team meets Minnie and her family in a rural farming community, where they will conduct a series of night hunts to get to the bottom of the attacks. The hunt is on when another of the owner’s dogs goes missing. A hair sample is brought to Bigfoot forensics expert M.K. Davis.

Season Finale: Saturday, March 11 at 10/9c
Jessica and her physically challenged husband, Bret, live in a heavily wooded area of Texas. They say they’re being terrorized by Bigfoot pounding on the walls of their house and screaming and wailing in the night. Bret also believes he saw a huge Bigfoot run in front of his car, and so he calls GCBRO to try to locate the creature that is frightening them. The team finds tracks around the house, including a huge handprint in the mud that’s twice the size of a human hand. The final night hunt of the season sends GCBRO in search of a giant, rogue Bigfoot.
