The story of The Blair Witch Project has been a long and detailed one filled with peaks, valleys, and everywhere in between. A new book is on its way from Arrow that’s looking to tell the tale in its entirety!

From the Arrow Website:
As the Millennium approached, horror was becoming an unusual commodity. Low budget horror films flooded the home video market while their big budget counterparts took hold at the box office. It seemed that a balance could not be found that would please everyone.

In the final months of 1999, horror was saved by a film that became a turning point in many aspects – including film production, film marketing and film distribution. One film was a revelation of cinema which shook the world at the time and created such panic and fear that the effects of the film can still be felt today.

Filmmaker Russ Gomm takes a look at the phenomena of The Blair Witch Project through the eyes of a fan who was captivated by the unusual promotional strategy that led up to the release. This book takes a trip back in time to the 1990s to uncover the history of the production of the film including a unique making of and its path to success.

Through conversations with fellow fans, filmmakers and other industry professionals, the book also examines the lasting effect that this seminal film had on not only the audiences, but the film industry itself and indeed the future of the horror genre.

Pre-order the book, which has a cover illustration by Peter Strain and will be available July 31st, here.

The supernatural sub-genre keeps plugging along as audiences continue to consume ghosts and other denizens of spookery like there’s no tomorrow. Next up? Deadline is reporting that Fox has beaten out several bidders to acquire Inside, a large scale supernatural thriller film to be written by Neil Cross, best known as the creator of the celebrated BBC series “Luther.”

The film will be produced by The Picture Company’s Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman, expanding Fox’s relationship with Cross, Rona, and Heineman, who are in the middle of the Escape from New York remake with Robert Rodriguez on board to direct. Mike Ireland is the Fox exec on that project and will serve in the same role on the new project.

They are keeping the plot under wraps, but sources said it’s a contemporary piece that involves a CDC-like secure facility that houses dangerous artifacts that include mythological creatures. The protagonist is a wronged man who finds himself behind bars along with the menagerie of creatures.

Still Interested in a TV Series of The Dark Tower? Good Because It’s Happening (Maybe)!

$

When it was announced that Stephen King’s epic series The Dark Tower was going to be adapted into live action properties, one medium that was included was TV. For many, this was a great bit of news as a TV series has the ability to really flesh out a story over many episodes, something a 2- to 3-hour film simply can’t do.

However, since that announcement, there hasn’t been too much in the way of information on that front, and the film has since been delayed more than once.

However, producer Ron Howard is adamant that the TV aspect is still very much in the plans, telling TVGuide, “Dark Tower is coming out this summer. It’s a terrific movie directed by Nikolaj Arcel. And we are working on the television component. He continues, explaining, “That’s not a commitment on the television side, but creatively it could work very well hand-in-hand with what we’d like the movies to be.

Now, as you’ll notice, Howard said “movies.” The plan is that if the first film is a success, more will follow. Considering the rich and expansive universe that King has created, there is certainly a lot to pull from. However, if the film isn’t a success, which is unfortunately a very real possibility (high fantasy films typically don’t fare all that well at the box office), they may have to shelve all the plans until they figure out the best approach to take.

Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Fran Kranz, Abbey Lee, Tom Taylor, and Katheryn Winnick co-star in The Dark Tower.

Based on the King-penned fantasy series, the film follows a wandering knight who is the last hope of the fallen land of Mid-World. He is charged with finding the Dark Tower while battling his nemesis, the Man in Black.

Nikolaj Arcel directs with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer producing under their Imagine Entertainment banner along with Stephen King and Erica Huggins. The current release date is August 4, 2017.

Etheria Film Night Reveals 2017 Short Film Lineup

The 2017 Etheria Film Night has revealed the final lineup of short films that will be presented on Saturday, June 3rd, at 7:30 pm PT at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Following the screenings there will be Q&As with the directors in attendance.

Etheria programmer Heidi Honeycutt explains: “Every year there’s a definite trend in the submissions based on what’s happening in the mainstream world of genre TV and film. The year that ‘The Walking Dead’ came out on Netflix in Europe, Etheria received so many European zombie films; last year it was superhero action and martial arts, when ‘Jessica Jones’ and other Marvel shows were premiering. It depends on what’s popular at the moment. This year it’s body horror. So many women have submitted crazy-good horror films that screw with your perception of reality and your body. Tara Price’s Earworm, in our main lineup, is a great example of this trend. It’s awesome and gruesome, and we can’t wait for the audience to see it.

Price adds, “Etheria’s reputation precedes itself with its solid showcase of films and classic Hollywood venue. I’m so proud they chose Earworm to be a part of this year’s line-up!

You can see the full list, along with trailers (where available) and synopses, below.

The upcoming sci-fi/horror anthology series “Dark/Web” has added two wonderful faces to its cast in the form of Robert Davi (The Goonies) and Julie Benz (“Dexter”).

From the official press release:
Davi, who has appeared in over 100 films in his career, plays an ethically challenged doctor in the episode, “Transplant”, written and directed by Mario Miscione (“The Vault”) from a story by Tim Nardelli. The episode centers on a terminally ill man in need of a heart transplant. When time runs out, he turns to black market organ sales on the deep web run by an ethically challenged doctor (Davi); the heart saves his life, but the dark side effects that come with it lead to a search for it’s true owner.

Julie Benz will appear in the episode “Rideshare”, which is described by writer/director Boman Modine as a post-modern serial killer origin story centered around an Uber-esque ride sharing service.

Also joining the cast are Hayley Marie Norman, Dora Madison, Griffin Freeman, Cole Bernstein, Duane Shepard Sr., Amin El Gamal, and Cameron Cruz.

“Dark/Web” is the brainchild of brothers Michael and Tim Nardelli, and Mario Miscione; creators of the cult hit “Circle”, which was purchased for distribution by Netflix last year.

The eight-part anthology series combines a serialized narrative with stand-alone sci-fi/thriller segments that tackle the dangers of a totally connected world. It recently wrapped production and will be shopped to buyers this summer.

Below are images from the episodes as well as an official poster.

This New Blood Drive Trailer Is Packed With Gore, Violence, and Grindhouse Mayhem

All right, I’m getting incredibly interested in Syfy’s upcoming series “Blood Drive,” which is an homage and throwback to grindhouse films of the 70’s. The series, which apparently was barely approved for television, is all about a day and age where cars no longer run on fuel… they run on human blood. In order to survive in this post-apocalyptic world, several people agree to partake in a twisted cross-country death race.

Check out the brand new trailer below, but be warned that it’s very much NSFW!

“Blood Drive” stars Alan Ritchson, Thomas Dominique, Christina Ochoa, Marama Corlett, and Colin Cunningham.

The “Blood Drive” series is from Universal Cable Productions and executive producers John Hlavin (Underworld Awakening), David Straiton (“Bates Motel”), and Frederik Malmberg (Let Me In), along with producer Mark Wheeler (“Becoming”). James Roland (“Weeds”) created the project and is a co-executive producer on the series.

Synopsis:
Los Angeles in the near future: where water is as scarce as oil and climate change keeps the temperature at a cool 115 degrees in the shade. It’s a place where crime is so rampant that only the worst violence is punished and where Arthur Bailey (Ritchson) — the city’s last good cop — runs afoul of the dirtiest and meanest underground car rally in the world, Blood Drive. The master of ceremonies is a vaudevillian nightmare, the drivers are homicidal deviants, and the cars run on human blood.

Buckle up, lube up, and prepare for everything you know about cable television to blow up!

That’s right! Horrible Imaginings Film Festival helped organize the San Diego leg of what is being called “The Bahr Crawl.” It has been a road trip of readings to celebrate the release of Angel Meat, a new collection of short stories from award-winning author Laura Lee Bahr. Joining her in these readings are Splatterpunk legend John Skipp, Andrew J. Stone, and San Diego’s own David Agranoff and Anthony Trevino, who brought selections of their own to share at Verbatim Books.

Laura Lee Bahr, from the book trailer for Angel Meat

As Laura Lee Bahr puts it during the performance, “. . .I feel that reading is a very intimate act.” I agree with her, and it is for this reason that the almost lost art of reading aloud in public is especially potent for horror. In a way, the act of scaring one another with spoken stories is one of the oldest forms of creative communication and the birthplace of what we now know as horror.

I hope you enjoy this brief collection of bizarre and dark stories, as told by their authors. Thank you, Verbatim Books for hosting us! Now get to listening and sharing!

Happy Birthday, William Castle: An Open Letter to a Dad and a Legend

$

Happy Birthday, Dad; you’re 103 and look marvelous. Or you would if I could see beyond the veil. I know you died thinking you were unsuccessful, but boy, have I got a surprise for you.

You have fans, lots of them, even lots of brand new ones who love your movies. They love your films not only for the fun that they are, but for the fun you made them feel just like you made every day fun for me.

You would be amazed at the horror films out these days. Some you would love. Some would scare you to death (oh, that’s right… you’re already dead; I talk to you a lot so sometimes I forget that pesky problem), and some you would find troublesome. But the news today is troublesome, and since horror reflects the time we live in—buckle your seat belt.

I know just how to celebrate tonight. And since we don’t need to worry about time and space, it will be epic.

We’ll start the afternoon with a cigar at the beach – a Don Diego No. 5. You’ll walk me down to the shore and look at the horizon. You’ll tell me all my dreams are possible. I won’t worry about all your cigar smoking ‘cause you’re dead, remember? Then we’ll go to Scandia on Sunset. It’s your favorite restaurant. Closed now, but for your 103rd, anything’s possible. You’ll have the Great Hamlet Dagger and a filet with béarnaise. And dessert, many desserts. Again, you’re dead, live it up! You’ll tell great stories as you twirl the ice around in your scotch and soda puffing away on an endless Don Diego.

You’ll look at your watch, eyes wide, “Hurry, we’ll miss the movie.” We don’t have to hurry; the movies now wait for you.

Heard so much about ‘Get Out,’ can’t wait! Jordan Peele says it’s a cross between ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.

William Castle

We’ll buy a large popcorn and sit together in the darkened theater. Mom and Georgie will be there, too. I’ll introduce you to my husband, Tom, and son Kyle. My youngest, Will, named after you, will be holding your hand. He looks just like you. You always wanted family close. We will all be next to you in that darkened theater with our giant bags of popcorn.

We’ll scream and laugh in Get Out!, and when the lights come back on, you’ll be amazed. “What a storyteller that Jordan is, what a storyteller. I absolutely loved that film. Wish I had made it. Well, good for him! I did see a bit of Rosemary in it, but the way he used humor mixed in with the horror, just brilliant. Love to make a film with him!

I’ll tell Dad what he always told me, “Anything is possible!

Dad would ask one important question, “Is race still an issue?” I’ll nod. “Damn,” he’ll say as he lights up another Don Diego. “Human race needs to do better.

We’ll end the night with a cake that has 104 candles. One to grow on.

Mom would have picked it up earlier from Hansen’s Cakes. You’ll blow out your candles and make a wish. I wonder what you’ll wish for?

He’ll leave me hanging.
