Jeff Goldblum Talks Upcoming Role in Jurassic World 2

A couple of weeks ago, we posted that Jeff Goldlbum had officially signed on to play in Jurassic World 2, presumably to reprise his Jurassic Park role as Dr. Ian Malcolm. Talking with EW, Goldblum described his character as, “…a saucy, sassy man of some integrity and deep thinking.” Yup, sounds like Dr. Malcolm, alright!

Continuing, he told the site, “Even though some might say it’s popcorn-y entertainment (top-notch, of course), in our conversation [director J.A. Bayona] was very focused on the serious issues of greed as it oftentimes comes up in those movies, and the marvels of science and reason and the very fascinating point at which our species finds itself both in real life and in this imaginary world too.

Chris Pratt stars alongside Bryce Dallas Howard, Toby Jones, Justice Smith, Geraldine Chaplin, Ted Levine, Rafe Spall, James Cromwell, and Daniella Pineda. J.A. Bayona is on board to direct with Frank Marshall producing along with Pat Crowley and Belén Atienza.

Colin Trevorrow, who helmed Jurassic World, penned the script with his writing partner, Derek Connolly. Trevorrow will also executive produce with Steven Spielberg. VP of production Sara Scott is overseeing production on behalf of Universal.

Universal has set June 22nd, 2018, as the release date.

MPI Getting Ready to Bitch!

Some distro news has landed on our desks here as another flick that’s causing a nice buzz on the festival scene has been acquired for distribution! Get ready to unleash your Bitch!

From the Press Release:
MPI Media Group announced today that it has acquired multi-territory rights to BITCH, a dark and unsettling dramedy from writer-director Marianna Palka, who also stars alongside Jason Ritter. The film, which premiered to critical raves at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, is one of the boldest in the growing body of work by new female directors. MPI Media Group will be handling international territory sales of the film in Cannes and will release BITCH domestically under the company’s Dark Sky Films banner later this year.

The distribution agreement was negotiated by Nicola Goelzhaeuser, VP of Digital and International Sales at MPI along with Giles Edwards, MPI’s Head of Acquisitions and Development, MPI Europe and Peter Van Steemburg of ICM Partners along with Christopher Tricarico of Tricarico Chavez LLP on behalf of MarVista Entertainment. The deal covers multi-territory sales rights and U.S. theatrical and digital rights. Nicola Goelzhaeuser will be handling international sales for the film at the upcoming Marché Du Film.

Marianna Palka (director of Always Worthy and Good Dick) stars in this stinging feminist provocation about a woman who snaps under the crushing pressures of life and suddenly and shockingly assumes the psyche of a vicious dog. Confronted with this unexplainable but inescapable new reality, Jill’s philandering, absentee husband, Bill (Jason Ritter, Parenthood, W.), is forced to quickly become reacquainted with his four children and sister-in-law (Jaime King, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) as they attempt to keep the family together during this bizarre crisis.

Reviewing BITCH upon its premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, Eric Kohn of IndieWire called it “a chilling look at the destruction of the nuclear family with a vivid, snarling vision driven by the propulsive energy of its biting critique.” And Meredith Borders of Birth.Movies.Death says, “Bitch won’t give you a moment’s rest, keeping you anxious and alert until its extremely satisfying and quite lovely conclusion.”

Nicola Goelzhaeuser said, “Dark Sky Films continues its commitment to supporting the work of female directors, and Marianna Palka’s new film is a brave, uncompromising statement from one of the movement’s newest leading voices.”

“We at MarVista are thrilled to have Bitch, we are excited about the opportunities MPI will bring with their renowned understanding and expertise in the genre space.”

Producer Elijah Wood said,” Bitch is a totally unique take on a domestic breakdown – intimate, disturbing, tender and incredibly funny. If ‘A Woman Under the Influence’ and ‘Mr. Mom’ had a baby, it would be ‘Bitch’.”

Exclusive: Sci-Fi RPG Starfinder Announces Undead Planet and We’ve Got Images

If you’re a fan of tabletop RPGs, you’ve probably heard of Pathfinder, the fantasy game brought out by Paizo Publishing. Meant to be an extension of Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder became wildly popular, even outselling its predecessor and winning critical and fan acclaim. Coming this August is Starfinder, the sci-fi extension of the Pathfinder universe that takes place thousands of years in the future.

Today, we’ve been given very exciting exclusive information and photos that reveal EOX, a planet of the undead within Starfinder!

Direct from Paizo Publishing:

Have you ever heard the old apocryphal story about how the scientists of the Manhattan Project who tested the first atomic bomb feared it might cause a chain reaction and set the entire atmosphere on fire? Well that’s exactly what happened on Eox.

Once upon a time, Eox was a lush world, until its arrogant rulers created a superweapon capable of destroying neighboring planets. Their device worked, blowing up the enemy worlds and creating the asteroid belt called the Diaspora—but the magical backlash blew a hole in Eox as well and set its atmosphere ablaze. In the wake of the disaster, the few survivors in the irradiated wasteland turned to necromancy to rebuild their society.

Today, Eox is a world of the dead—and pretty smug about it, actually. After all, being undead comes with a lot of advantages in the modern era: Spaceships that don’t need air! A zombie workforce that doesn’t need breaks! While many of the other Pact Worlds fear and resent Eox, no one can deny that it’s better to have the undead working with you than against you.“

For more information, head on over to the official Starfinder website.

The Planet EOX

The landscape of EOX

Necrovite – Eox is home to a wide variety of undead creatures, from simple mindless zombies used as beasts of burden and convenient (if disturbing) forms of automation to powerful intelligent undead, often spellcasters with a focus on necromancy. This particular individual is a necrovite—a futuristic version of the lich from classic fantasy RPGs, created by storing your soul in a special technomagical relic called an electroencephalon that protects your consciousness and allows your body to rebuild itself if destroyed.

The Bone Sage – The Bone Sages of Eox have ruled their planet ever since its initial catastrophe. Generally undead spellcasters of extreme power, some of the Bone Sages actually remember life before the disaster, though many more have been destroyed and replaced by usurpers—one of the reasons Eox is divided into many independent fiefdoms, each ruled by its own paranoid Bone Sage. The sage illustrated here, Maligast of Eox, actually appeared in the Pathfinder adventure The Asylum Stone, having agreed to guard a runelord’s dungeon in exchange for the opportunity to study a powerful artifact. Little did we know at that time how important the Bone Sages would become!

Ellicoth – Fifty feet tall and and weighing upward of 30 tons, ellicoths roam Eox’s radioactive deserts, feeding off the vital energy of other creatures. That includes the magical energies animating undead as well, making the giant beasts one of the few creatures capable of legitimately terrifying Eoxian settlements.

Omenbringer – Eoxian starship designs reflect their builders’ unique needs and aesthetics. Most Eoxian ships resemble elaborate bone structures or the corpses of vast creatures, though this is partially an illusion, as much of the bone is actually more advanced materials sculpted into their morbid shapes. Such ships are designed specifically for the undead, with large portions of the hull left open to space, no galleys or heads, and tight-packed workstations in which the crew might be expected to stand at their posts for weeks without moving. All of this makes Eoxian ships extremely difficult to take down in combat, and this is particularly of the massive Thaumtech Omenbringer illustrated here, a carrier ship loaded with squadrons of nimble necrogliders.

Control Undead – Unable to reproduce on its own, Eox’s undead population imports corpses from other worlds and uses magic to create new mindless slaves or intelligent undead citizens. While living people are also welcome on the planet—most notably representatives from various corporations or students at the planet’s magical academies—the planet itself has yet to recover from its ancient calamity, and proper habitats for breathing creatures are few and far between.

Exclusive: Kevin Eastman on the Status of a New Heavy Metal Movie

$

In 1981, the world was blessed with the animated horror/fantasy/sci-fi/comedy film Heavy Metal, which was directed by Gerald Potterton. Based on the magazine of the same name, the film was an anthology where each short was centered, in some way, around a mysterious and deadly green orb known as the Loc-Nar. Featuring beautiful and quirky animations that were mixed with adult themes and visuals, the film was essentially a cartoon for adults. Plus, it featured a kickass soundtrack that is still tons of fun to put on.

Fast forward nearly 20 years and Heavy Metal 2000 came out. A feature-length animated film rather than an anthology, it followed Julie and her quest to save her sister from the evil Tyler. Unfortunately, while its predecessor received solid reviews, Heavy Metal 2000 was almost universally panned.

Related Story: Heavy Metal #285 Variant Cover Banned in Stores for… Rabbit Nipples?

Talks of a third entry have been happening for years. Back in the late 2000’s, Kevin Eastman, the publisher of “Heavy Metal” magazine, teamed up with David Fincher (Seven, Zodiac) and Tim Miller (Deadpool) were going to produce one. I spoke with Eastman earlier today and he elaborated on that time, saying, “…we spent about a year developing a Heavy Metal film that had seven sequences. Fincher was going to direct one, Miller was going to direct one, Guillermo del Toro was going to direct one, Zack Snyder was actually going to direct one that I wrote.” Unfortunately, the project never came to fruition for a very simple reason: money. “We had this wonderful team looking to do Heavy Metal, the franchise, to do it justice. We just couldn’t raise the money.

From there, Eastman met up with Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror, From Dusk Till Dawn), who optioned the film rights. “We spent about two years developing it as an opportunity. But again, we just couldn’t raise the money under the new regime, which was Jeff Krelitz, myself, and the new main owner of the company.

But while things may sound dour when looking at the past, Eastman offers a lot of hope for the future. “Interestingly enough, we’ve had a LOT of conversations within the last six, seven months about some real opportunities that I think…I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag but you can expect some very good news on that front in the very near future, which is incredibly exciting!” Eastman gushed.

We ended our interview with him saying, “We have some incredible opportunities with the brand Heavy Metal and we look forward to sharing some really good news with all you Heavy Metal fans really soon.

While nothing is confirmed, it’s still elating to hear that a third Heavy Metal film is still a project that holds interest and that wants to be made. As someone who grew up with Heavy Metal, I would be thrilled to see another film come out. Besides, any movie that can offer me a badass metal compilation as a soundtrack is one that I want to see come to pass!

Exclusive: Stargoyles Invade Earth in the Trailer for The Asylum’s Alien Convergence

Alien Convergence is one of them newfangled Asylum mockbusters. Whereas, in the old days The Asylum would have done a carbon copy with a slightly different name, now they’ll just slap a marketable mockbuster moniker on a movie with no real resemblance to the big screen film they’re converging on.

For example, The Asylum’s just-released King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table… the King Arthur movie set in modern day Thailand… the one that ends with the descendants of the legendary knights using machine guns… fighting a giant kabuki-faced robot… Yeah, that Asylum King Arthur movie.

Which brings us to their newest: Alien Convergence. Don’t expect too many similarities between this and a certain new Ridley Scott sequel/prequel. The Asylum’s version takes place on Earth and sees mankind fighting for survival against a swarm of invading winged alien creatures that kind of look like space gargoyles.

Stargoyles! Better title than Alien Convergence, but probably not as marketable. I’d watch a movie called Stargoyles. Heck, I’m sure I’m gonna watch this too. Here’s the synopsis:

When flying reptilian creatures wreak havoc all over the world, the survivors’ only hope of stopping them is a new, state-of-the-art fighter jet piloted by the only team that knows how to use the technology.

Written by Marc Gottlieb, directed by Rob Pallatina, and starring Stephen Brown, Mishone Feigin, Caroline Ivari, and Michael Marcel, these aliens will converge on VOD June 1st and invade DVD June 27th.

We have your first look at the trailer for Alien Convergence below. Given how Alien: Covenant has been using the one-word tagline “RUN” and these aliens can fly, maybe The Asylum should have used the one-word tagline “DUCK” on the poster.

It’s a sad day for the world’s inner child as one of the great pioneers of pop culture has passed on. The name Stanley Weston may not jump straight out at you, but if it weren’t for him, all of our childhoods would have been a LOT duller.

Weston was the creator of what’s come to be known as the action figure. His work included the much beloved G.I. Joe and Thundercats. According to THR his daughter, Cindy Winebaum, made the announcement. He was 84.

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to extend our deepest of sympathies to Weston’s family, friends, and constituents. Oh, the impact you have had, sir. Thanks for helping millions of children worldwide dare to dream. Godspeed.

Abe Sapien Almost Got His Own Hellboy-Spinoff Film!

$

With the recent announcement that the Hellboy series will be getting a reboot, Peter Briggs, who wrote the first Hellboy film, which came out in 2004, has been inundated with people asking for his opinion. Fed up with all the messages coming his way, Briggs instead decided to publicly post a rather fascinating story about how he was approached to write a Hellboy spinoff film that was originally supposed to be about Prince Nuada, the villain of Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Due to issues within the studio, that idea had to be scrapped and the end result was a script that focused on Abe Sapien, Hellboy’s trusted pal at the B.P.R.D.

Related Story: Let’s Talk About This Hellboy Reboot

Rather than condense the post, I’m going to paste it right here as it’s a fascinating read, both from a “what could have been” perspective as well as a peek into how studios operate:

Okay, guys. My inbox is stuffed with messages from you all asking me about the Neil Marshall “Hellboy” reboot from Millennium announced yesterday, so I may as well own-up: While I’ve got nothing to do with the reboot, I HAVE been working with Universal Pictures on another “Hellboy” spinoff project since 2010.

Back in 2010, I was working out of an office at Weta Workshop in New Zealand, when I got a surprise call from Universal. (Kevin Misher at Universal had hired me to write “Hellboy” with Larry Gordon for Universal there back in 1996: the film was originally put into turnaround a year or so after Guillermo Del Toro came onboard around 1999, and then was picked up by Columbia and Revolution a few years later. The rest you know.)

Internally, Universal were keen to make a “Hellboy” spinoff based around the character of Prince Nuada from “Hellboy 2” (about which I had nothing to do with, although amusingly my then-girlfriend Tracey Wilson was the storyboard artist on the film), and asked if I was interested in writing it. I said I was, although there was the slight problem of Prince Nuada being…ah…um…slightly “dead” at the end of “Hellboy 2”. I also pushed a little bit that, if it came off, I’d really like to direct it and make it in New Zealand. Universal were agreeable and said we could discuss that at the appropriate time. I was working with Richard Taylor at Weta in New Zealand back then, and discussed the possibility of doing this with Weta with Richard.

I started working on an outline with my Los Angeles-based “Panzer 88” co-writer Aaron Mason while still in New Zealand. It was called “Hellboy: Silverlance”, and we solved the “Nuada Problem”. Although we never really discussed it as such it really was a “B.P.R.D.” movie. The aquatic Abe Sapien was the main character, and Hellboy still featured fairly prominently in it. I suppose you could liken it to a “Suicide Squad” situation: Batman was in there, but the story wasn’t really about him.

Aaron and myself turned it in. Universal really wanted to proceed with it, but after further discussions at the studio it was apparent a “Hellboy 3” was still on the cards for the studio and more of a priority, so “Silverlance” got back-burnered. I figured that was the end of that.
Five years later, 2015, I was in Sweden when I got another call from Universal. It was looking like “Hellboy 3” wasn’t now going to happen, so would Aaron and myself now be interested in further developing a reworked version of “Silverlance”? Larry Gordon would be involved. (Aside from “Hellboy”, I’d worked with Larry and Lloyd Levin twice before — on “Alien vs Predator” back in 1991, and then on an abortive pre-Stallone stab at “Judge Dredd” with Schwarzenegger and Tony Scott in 1992/1993.)

Hell, yes!

The one caveat Universal gave us was that the character of Hellboy himself now couldn’t be shown.

We reworked and expanded the project out. The story had a sort of “Highlander” structure to it. Moving into their new Bureau For Paranormal Research And Defense headquarters in Colorado, Abe is troubled still by his psychic connection with Princess Nuala from “Hellboy 2”, so researches the history of Nuala and Nuada. We would have seen Nuada’s connection to a rival fairy courtier who seeks control of the fairy kingdom (and Nuala’s hand in marriage), and engineers the machinations that cause Prince Nuada’s expulsion. We’d have seen Nuada in different timezones down the centuries, including his first meeting with Mister Wink in Spain during the Spanish Inquisition (Nuada saves Wink from a troupe of soldiers); and Nuada in Nazi Germany in World War 2 engineering a pact to keep various supernatural entities unharmed from the conflict. (We would have seen Nuada and Kroenen fighting in a “friendly” bout for a bunch of Project Ragnarok goons.) Doug Jones would have been playing twin characters of both Abe and a reprise of the Angel Of Death, with whom Prince Nuada strikes a bargain. Agent Myers from the first “Hellboy” film would have returned. The story reached a rousing action climax at the B.P.R.D. Colorado headquarters and used Rasputin’s summoning gauntlet from the first movie (and we did manage to sneak Hellboy in for a cameo in one scene!) If it had been successful, it would have been the first in a series of “From The Files Of The B.P.R.D.” projects.

Aaron and I turned in our retitled “Silverlance: From The Files Of The B.P.R.D.”, the end of 2015. Discussions continued with Universal into early 2016, when we had a conference call with Universal and Mike Richardson from Dark Horse Comics. I’ve been friendly with Mike for 20-some years, and we were asked politely to put a pin in the “Silverlance” project as they were keen to reboot a movie version of “Hellboy” with an all-new team. Universal were very happy with our reworked “Silverlance” and wanted to proceed with it, but now it was made clear we couldn’t use any of the characters created for “Hellboy 2”. Which, given that the story was all about Prince Nuada, was a bit of a bind. I suggested going back to the comics and instead working on an all-new “B.P.R.D.” storyline involving the nemesis character The Black Flame (whom I really loved from the comics.)

Things were quiet throughout 2016, but just before Christmas 2016 I was in Bath in England when we got the call from Universal to say that it looked like “Silverlance” was once more back on, but it was looking a little unclear. (This really surprised me, as I’d assumed after the early 2016 conversation the project was scuppered for good.) I kept in touch with Universal periodically into 2017. With the announcement of the Neil Marshall “Hellboy” reboot project yesterday, I think it’s safe to say “Silverlance” is now officially dead. As a fan of “Hellboy” for 25 years, I’m curious to see how the new Millennium project turns out.“

You Can Watch the Pilot for the Dylan Dog-Based Series Dylan Right Now

Remember a couple of months ago when we posted a teaser for “Dylan”, the TV series adaptation that was based on Dylan Dog? In that post, we told you that the pilot was going to be made free-to-watch in April. Alas, it’s a little bit past then but the pilot has now been made available for any and all to watch!

Directed by Kevin Kopacka, “Dylan” stars Ford Everett, Alberto Finadri, Denise Ankel, Harry Baer, and Philipp Jablonski.

Kopacka told us:

The idea is to have a 6-episode first season. As with the comics, each episode will be different in style and atmosphere to the one before, but there will be an overarching story with Xarabas planned to appear in the season finale.

Expect it to be a mixture of the Dylan comics L’alba dei morti viventi and Morgana with nods to Italian classic horror movies such as Dellamorte Dellamore, Zombi, Demoni, and Burial Ground. It will be very atmospheric, artistic, and (hopefully) even scary but still with comedic elements. A full trailer will be released before the launch of the episode.

As a closing statement, I will say that this show is made for the fans and is in no way meant to be disrespectful to its source material. I hope you (especially the Italian fans!) will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it!“

Head on down to check out the pilot and make sure to keep your eyes on the “Dylan” Facebook page!

Mortal Kombat’s Sub-Zero Joins Injustice 2

Injustice 2 is the game that keeps on giving. In addition to an incredible roster of fighters including Batman, Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, Scarecrow (voiced by Robert Englund) and the Joker, we now have confirmation that none other than Mortal Kombat’s Sub-Zero will appear. This isn’t too much of a surprise, as the game’s being developed by Mortal Kombat’s NetherRealm Studios, with the series’ creator Ed Boon directing.

Sub-Zero will be featured in the game’s first downloadable content pack alongside Starfire and the Red Hood. We last saw the ice ninja facing off against DC heroes in the fantastic Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe back in 2008, so fans will soon be feeling nostalgic. He probably won’t be the only non-DC fighter in the game, as we also pretty much know at this point that Spawn will also appear in Injustice 2 (it’s been one of the worst kept secrets in history).

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will publish Injustice 2 on Xbox One and PS4 on May 16.

Artist Creates Incredible Alien: Covenant-Themed Cake AND Photoshoot

Next Friday sees the release of Alien: Covenant, Ridley Scott’s sequel to Prometheus and semi-prequel to the 1979 sci-fi/horror classic Alien. For many, it’s a fascinating opportunity to learn more about the world of Weyland-Yutani and their seemingly desperate search for the Xenomorph. For others, it’s a way to see a different side of the world they have grown up with. For me, it’s more horror/sci-fi goodness, which is always a good thing!

To celebrate the impending release, photographer and stylist Christine H. McConnell teamed up with the Alien: Covenant crew to create some amazing themed baked goods as well as shoot them in a relevant setting. The end result is great, with the cakes (and cake pops…mmmmm, cake pops) looking fantastic and the visual aesthetic of the shoot perfectly matching Scott’s universe. You can see examples below.

Beast: A Folktale Bares its Fangs on Indiegogo

Yet another friggin’ awesome werewolf movie has landed on Indiegogo in the form of Beast: A Folktale.

From the Press Release:
BEAST: A Folktale welcome you to the world of discrimination by marrying culturally rich people within a harsh fantasy setting. The focus of this film is about the human condition. It tackles socially and racially driven issues that took place in the United States during the late 1700s.

The story follows Liam, an indentured servant, as he accompanies the commanding hunter, Barker, and his obedient cousin, Alec, in greed filled pursuits. Nearing the end of his contract, Liam discovers Barker’s true intentions, to keep him as a prisoner for his own personal gain. Desperately seeking his freedom back, Liam must unwillingly partake in a bounty for a deadly monster, where he may ultimately find some hope.

Many of the characters are dealing with unfamiliar places and unfamiliar things. This has lead to a personal rebellion against their environment in one form or another. Some will fight for freedom, others will kill. Ultimately, racial injustices must be abolished. Sometimes it’s about the color of your skin, other times it’s about the shape of it.

Themes
The story is a metaphor for the everlasting division in the United States. In particular, the color of white and black relations. Prejudice stems from our ancestors who created the bigotry because of ignorance. BEAST will invite you into the fight against hate by using folklore. You’ll be challenging what it means to be white or black, rich or poor, and human or monster.

Sad news to report as actor Kenny Miller, who appeared in the 1950’s B-horror films I Was a Teenage Werewolf and Attack of the Puppet People, has passed away from pneumonia at 85, according to THR.

Miller’s acting career was primarily confined to the 50’s and 60’s, although he did appear in the 1976 horror film Blood Stalkers as “Daniel”. His last credited role was the 2009 sci-fi/horror film It Came From Trafalgar, which saw Miller star alongside horror icons such as Linnea Quigley, Gunnar Hansen, Butch Patrick, and Reggie Bannister.

We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family in this sad time.

Rest in Peace: Michael Parks

Another terrible piece of news to report as Kevin Smith has announced the passing of actor Michael Parks, who leaves us at the age of 77. Parks starred in such films as From Dusk Till Dawn, Tusk, Red State, and Grindhouse as well as playing the role of Jean Renault in “Twin Peaks”.

Smith wrote the following eulogy:

I hate to report that my cinematic muse Michael Parks has passed away. Michael was, and will likely forever remain, the best actor I’ve ever known. I wrote both Red State and Tusk FOR Parks, I loved his acting so much. He was, hands-down, the most incredible thespian I ever had the pleasure to watch perform. And Parks brought out the absolute best in me every time he got near my set. From the moment I saw him steal the opening scene of From Dusk Till Dawn at an advance screening at the Sunset 5 back in the mid-90’s, I said to Scott Mosier, “Could you imagine what it must be like to work with a Yoda of acting like that guy? I gotta write for him one day.” It took me 15 years but my dream came true on Red State (for which Parks won Best Actor at the Sitgest Festival) and then again years later with Tusk. Only Michael Parks could have delivered the line “Is man indeed a walrus at heart?” and make it scary as fuck. My favorite memory of Michael is watching him and Johnny Depp act with and at each other, like a couple of dueling wizards, in their shared scene in Tusk. Parks was in Heaven that day, sharing the screen with another brilliant actor and creating an unforgettable performance. He elevated any flick or TV show he was in and elevated every director he ever acted for. I was so fucking blessed to have worked with this bonafide genius. But really, I was just lucky to have known him at all. My heart goes out to James (Michael’s son), Oriana (Michael’s wife), Quentin Tarantino (Michael’s biggest fan) and any movie or music lover who was ever dazzled by the talents of Michael Parks. Farewell, old friend. I’ll see you farther along…

We send out condolences to his friends and family in this difficult time.

Elegy – Unleashing the Hounds of Love with Melissa Kelly

Tony TimponeWhen Dread Central chief Steve Barton asked me to revive my old Elegy editorial as a blog for his great horror website, I couldn’t help but think of that Michael Corleone quote from The Godfather Part III: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!

In case you are unfamiliar with Elegy, I penned these editorials for Fangoria from 1987 till 2010, covering everything from ’80s MPAA ratings wars to publicists who ticked me off to my front-row seat to 9/11. After Chris Alexander took over as editor, I briefly transformed Elegy into a blog for Fangoria.com. Now it’s back, thanks to the persistent prodding of my old friend Uncle Creepy.

Over a post-Monsterpalooza dinner in Pasadena last April, I asked Steve and co-chief Jon Condit what a renewed Elegy should be. “Anything you want,” Steve replied. Jon added he would like me to champion future masters of horror and support filmmakers who might get lost in today’s rapidly changing marketplace, where movies good and bad are treated as just more product to keep the theatrical/disc/VOD assembly line rolling along. That’s a gauntlet I am happy to pick up. Having edited Fango for all those years and programmed horror film festivals all over the world (especially, since 1998, Montreal’s Fantasia), I think I have a good eye for identifying new talent.

The best place to scout for the latest horror is at film festivals. Every major city has one, and even the non-genre ones, like NYC’s recently wrapped Tribeca Film Festival, offers a Midnight section. That’s where I caught Australian writer/director Ben Young’s unbearably tense Hounds of Love (review). The movie charts the relationship of a vicious serial killer couple (played by actors Stephen Curry and Emma Booth) who ensnare a 17-year-old girl (Ashleigh Cummings) into their web of terror. Hounds of Love begins its North American release from Gunpowder & Sky on Friday, May 12 in various cities and on VOD. At Tribeca, I chatted with Hounds producer for the skinny on Young’s sensational feature directorial debut.

TONY TIMPONE: As a producer, what attracted you to such dark material?

MELISSA KELLY: Interestingly, when Ben first approached me with the film I said no. It’s something I’m really not aligned with. But when he talked about the psychology and how he wanted to approach the story, I said I’m in. This is really intriguing and different. And the way he wanted to look at a particular issue and explore it with such balance and in a sensitive way, I was sold on that idea. I had wanted to work with Ben for quite some time, and we’ve been together on this project since the pitch stage so we went through all the drafts together. I’m fully invested in this film.

TT: What was it about Ben that made you want to take a chance on a first-time feature director?

MK: There’s no doubt it’s a massive risk, but Ben’s ability to understand story and work with actors impressed me. Also his dedication and absolute tenacity made me feel we’d make a really good team. I knew he was ready to make his film.

TT: What is the story’s basis in true crime?

MK: Ben’s mom, Felicity Young, is crime fiction author, so he spent a lot of time reading her research material. He came across a book about serial killers, and more specifically, about women who kill. He realized there was something intriguing here that other movies hadn’t tackled before. That was the impetus to write a film about a woman who was so devoted to a man that she would kill for him. It’s crazy, right? Ben researched a series of crimes, but it’s a fictional film.

TT: Australia has witnessed a series of gritty true crime thrillers and horror films in recent years, like Snowtown, Animal Kingdom and the upcoming Killing Ground. Why the trend?

MK: I don’t think it is necessarily a new wave, but those stories are interesting. We don’t make many films in Australia each year, and when you are looking for subject matter that sets it apart from other stories, intriguing, character-driven true-crime stories separate them from the pack. These aren’t the only kind of movies we make in Australia though.

TT: But they are easier to sell internationally.

MK: There is no doubt that there is an absolute resurgence of young people being interested in true crime or horror, especially in the US where there is a massive young audience who are engaging with this subject matter, which is really exciting. Our timing with Hounds of Love could be perfect. That’s serendipity.

TT: Your actors are terrific in the film. What did they bring to their roles?

MK: They are absolutely amazing. Stephen Curry is known as a comedy actor in Australia, so it was a really bold move of us to cast him in this role. But when he read the material and showed us his commitment and take on the character, we knew we had the right actor. Emma and Ben had known each other for a long time, so he wrote the character of Evelyn with her in mind. It took Emma some convincing that this was the role for her. We asked her to audition, and she just nailed it. The emotion she brings to the character is incredible. She based her character on personal experiences and relationships she had. She drew on those emotions and let go and gave us everything. Ashleigh is the most beautiful, sweetest person you will ever meet. She recently won the Heath Ledger Scholarship and is a genuine talent. Though she is a little bit older than her character, she nailed the audition. Being older [21] gave her the strength and maturity to handle that very difficult subject matter. Had we cast someone who was 17, they may not have been emotionally ready to cope with that situation. Ashleigh’s maturity enabled her to understand the situation she’s in. Her character has to be very canny under pressure and find a way to escape.

TT: The last 10 minutes are really tense and suspenseful. Any anecdotes of those shooting days?

MK: It was a tough 20-day shoot overall, which is tough on any cast and crew. There is an element of speed in that. We were predominantly based in one location for 15 days. That allowed us breathing space, not having to move trucks around and everything. The last few days of the shoot were very hot and intense. Those sweltering conditions elevated everybody’s performance. We mostly shot in sequence.

TT: The film could have easily gone in a more graphic direction. Did Ben always want to avoid the “torture porn” route?

MK: We had no interest in that. Ben’s directing shows incredible restraint. Sometimes when you don’t show something your mind imagines something even worse. We knew that would be more frightening. We never intended Hounds of Love to be a horror film. We intended it to be a psychological drama, but I could see how it straddles both. Audiences may interpret it as horror, as the situation is horrific. But in no way is the movie gratuitous; it is very sensitively handled. We have scenes where a door shuts and your mind will go somewhere far worse than what you can show on the screen.

TT: How rough were those torture scenes on Ashleigh?

MK: They were tough on everybody; you have to get into a particular mindset. Ashleigh used music to get into character and/or to find that space. We created a very strong family unit on set, and at the end of the day it was very important that everybody “check out.” We would go out to dinner and do things that allowed people to wash away the day so they didn’t go home with that horrible situation. It also helped having Stephen Curry there; even though he’s playing a villain, he a comedian. The minute the camera stops, he’s out with a joke and he brought the whole room back. After the intensity, Stephen’s comedy routines would be very grounding for us all.

TT: Perhaps the most frightening thing about the movie is that the woman goes along with the killings, that whole co-dependent relationship.

MK: That is something Ben wanted to explore. That is a very strange psychology that is repeated in these situations. You have a very charismatic male and a woman who is a little bit broken, and they form a bond. Unfortunately, that devotion and co-dependency have her go to extremes in that relationship and kill for love. It’s tough emotional terrain.

TT: What’s next for you?

MK: Comedy [laughs]. Ben and I are working on an Australian Goonies-style adventure that is a lot of fun. We want to work again together and do something fun.

Animated Horror Makes a Comeback with Feature Length Stop-Motion Film Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires

I don’t think we’ve had a decent adult stop-motion/puppet movie since Hell and Back two years ago, so Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires is going to be filling one pretty big void.

Directed by Michael Mort, the adult animated flick serves as a feature length adaptation of his 2013 short Chuck Steel: Raging Balls of Steel Justice, which you can watch below:

The film features the titular badass Chuck Steel waging war against legions of homeless/vampire hybrids known as Trampires. It’s set in the 1980s, which explains the punk rock hairstyles and soundtrack. The Welsh studio Animortal created over 400 puppets for the production in addition to over 50 ornate sets, although there doesn’t appear to be any voice actors confirmed as of yet.

Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires will have its very own panel at the MCM London Comic Con on Saturday 27 May, so be sure to head on over there if you feel like the world needs more adult-oriented animated films.

Synopsis
It’s no longer 1985 – it’s 1986, and Chuck Steel has work to do if he is to prevent the worst plague ever to hit Los Angeles – a scourge of deadly Trampires, mutant hybrids of vampires and bums.
