Judge Dredd: Mega City One Coming to TV!

$

It’s been revealed by EW that Rebellion and IM Global will be turning their iconic comic book series Judge Dredd into a live-action TV series! Dubbed “Judge Dredd: Mega City One,” the show will follow a group of Judges and the challenges they face in Mega City One, a megapolis that encompasses much of the United States Eastern Coast.

IM Global president Mark Stern stated, “This is one of those seminal sci-fi properties that seems to only become and more relevant with age. Not only is it a rich world with biting social commentary, but it’s also fun as hell! As a fan of the comics and both films, it’s a dream come true to be able to work with Jason and Chris [Kingsley] in adapting this for television.”

Jason and Chris Kingsley, the owners of Rebellion, add, “We’re very excited to be beginning the journey to get more of Judge Dredd’s Mega-City One on the television screen. Thanks to the legions of fans who have kept up pressure on social media, and a lot of background work and enthusiasm, we aim to make a big budget production that will satisfy both our vast comics audience and the even greater general screen-watching public.”

Judge Dredd has been adapted into two films, one in 1995 with Sylvester Stallone in the lead role and the second in 2012 with Karl Urban donning the imposing helmet. The former wasn’t well-received but has since become a schlocky B cult film, while the latter was critically acclaimed but simply didn’t perform well at the box office. Fans have been aching for a sequel ever since, although with the news of this TV series that seems all but impossible.

Sleepy Hollow Cancelled by Fox; No Update Yet on The Exorcist

It’s that time of year again when TV networks engage in what’s become known as “Upfronts,” presentations to advertisers in order for the networks to get the financial support they need to fund their upcoming seasons; and in advance of Fox’s turn on the 15th of this month, they’ve announced the cancellation of “Sleepy Hollow.”

Per EW, the show’s recently concluded fourth season will be its last.  As fans of “Sleepy Hollow” are well aware, it has struggled to stay on track creatively following the departure of original co-lead Nicole Beharie, and Season 4 averaged only 3.3 million viewers and a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49, including DVR. So the writing has been on the wall for a while despite how engaging Tom Mison has been as Ichabod Crane.

As for Fox’s other horror series, “The Exorcist,” it’s looking like we won’t find out that show’s fate until next week… so stay tuned! In the meantime, RIP Ichabod!

Big Red will soon be back with Neil Marshall pulling his devilish strings, and this news has us just giddy! We already know that “Stranger Things'” David Harbour will be wearing the broken crown and that the Millennium Films project has already been scripted by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, who are shooting for an R rating. Now more has come!

Silver Screen Beat caught up with Cosby to dig a little deeper…

“[This] is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy. Neil said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics. The script is done, but work will continue as we move forward, always trying to make it the best it can be.

Music to our ears.

Dimension Addresses the Amityville: The Awakening Poster Situation

This past weekend a rather troubling story came up when we realized that an international poster for Amityville: The Awakening used imagery from the 2016 horror film The Possession Experiment. Since then we’ve been in touch directly with Blumhouse and Dimension Films, both of which produced the film and the latter of which is handling distribution.

Today I spoke with someone from Dimension Films who explained precisely what happened. Per Dimension, the poster was created by an international distributor out of Malaysia without their knowledge. They tell me that this poster was not approved for release and that it has since been taken down with their apologies. The Dimension Films rep was adamant that they did not have any intention of using imagery from another movie.

To recap: This is a foreign distributor jumping the gun, and there was no ill intent from Blumhouse or Dimension Films. The poster in question is not approved, so it shouldn’t be seen as such.

Below is the official poster.

Sad news is coming in from the foreign horror scene as Greek newspaper Espresso is reporting that Dogtooth star Mary Tsoni has passed on at the all too young age of just 30.

The site goes on to report that the actress was found dead in her apartment after she had called the police. No cause of death has been identified as of yet. Tsoni burst on to the scene in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated film.

We here at Dread Central would like to offer our sincerest of condolences to Mary’s family members, friends, and constituents. You were taken from us far too soon. Godspeed.

Help Save a Cemetery from Insolvency

Here at Dread Central we play close attention to causes around us that are worthy to take up the mantle of. This is one such case because it affects us all into eternity! The Press-Telegram reports Long Beach’s historic Sunnyside Cemetery is on the verge of insolvency, and that spells really bad news for its residents.

According to the site, Sunnyside’s business depends on plot sales and burials, and the 108-year-old graveyard has run out of both. “We’ve sold every stitch of ground,” says Mike Miner, the 73-year-old manager of the cemetery. “We have nothing left to sell, and burials are getting scarce. We’ve had three this year, and two of them were cremations.

The drought-busting rains of January dumped more bad news on the 13-1/2-acre cemetery at 1905 E. Willow Street.

January almost killed us,” Miner says. “Everything just started growing like crazy. By the end of the month, it was 4 feet tall everywhere. Not just grass, but weeds that don’t like to be mowed. They kept breaking our mowers.

Miner and the cemetery’s only other employee, Jose Robles, just barely were able to keep the onslaught at a somewhat manageable level.

We’ve got a handle on it now,” he says, but “a handle” merely means the weeds and grass have been knocked down to about a 2-foot level. “We’re not even trying to get flush with the ground,” he admitted.

Lack of financial growth, meanwhile, has put Sunnyside on the brink of insolvency.

To help combat the eventual shuttering of the cemetery, which is home to the resting spots of many of Long Beach’s original pioneers, a GoFundMe page has been set up; and after two months it’s still pretty damned far from its goal of raising $100k.

If you can help out, please do so! I mean, what’s cooler than helping to save a cemetery?!?

We knew it! They were right all along! In what’s probably the coolest news of the day, The Royal Society is reporting that scientists have discovered a new species of horned, club-tailed dinosaur with a spooky resemblance to the monstrous demigod Zuul, one of the villains of the 1984 Ghostbusters movie, and now the discovery bears its namesake.

Zuul crurivastator’s scaly body stretched some 20 feet long, with an impressive tail that took up half that length. Its tail was lined with forbidding spikes and ended in a sledgehammer-like club. Two horns sat on its skull right behind the eyes, giving it a very Zuul-like look that inspired the genus name.

This amazing discovery of this new type of ankylosaurine dinosaur was unearthed in Hill County, Montana 75 million years after its death. For more click here. Who ya gonna call?

Dead Island 2 Is Not Dead

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Deep Silver had quietly pulled the plug on Dead Island 2. It was announced last year that UK-based Sumo Digital would handle development, but there have been no further updates since.

However, Eurogamer recently contacted Deep Silver to inquire about the game’s status and was told the following: “Dead Island 2 is in development at Sumo Digital, and we are excited by the progress the team are making with Deep Silver’s most successful IP. When we are ready to share more information, we will.”

So there you have it. Dead Island 2 has not been cancelled after all. Does this mean that it might be unveiled at E3 next month? Seems pretty damn likely.

Before he achieved cult status for his performance as Mark in Tommy Wiseau’s The Room, Greg Sestero was best known for playing the lead role of Andre Toulon in Retro Puppet Master, which is coming to Blu-ray on May 16.

From the Press Release:
Get ready for the seventh spellbinding entry in Full Moon’s iconic Puppet Master series: Retro Puppet Master! Directed by insanely prolific genre legend David DeCoteau (Puppet Master III, Creepozoids) and produced by Charles Band (Puppet Master, Hideous!), Retro Puppet Master dials back the clock, serving as both a thrilling prequel to Puppet Master III and as one of the most unique, evocative films in the franchise.

Actor and author Greg Sestero (The Room) stars as the young Andre Toulon, living a peaceful life as a puppeteer in pre-World War I Paris and courting the lovely Ilsa, the Swiss ambassador’s beautiful young daughter. But the strings of fate that guide Toulon’s destiny are about to pull him into an unexpected direction after he encounters the renegade sorcerer Afzel, who has stolen the mysterious secrets of life from the dark god Sutekh. When Sutekh’s sinister servants arrive, and make Ilsa a part of their diabolical plans, it’s up to Toulon and his army of custom made puppets to stop them at any cost!

Featuring the final appearance of actor Guy Rolfe as the elder Toulon and boasting rich production values, a fine score by John Massari and a much stronger emphasis on human drama, Retro Puppet Master is a trip back in time with a very different pack of puppets.

Full Moon is proud to premiere this picture on Blu-ray completely remastered from the original 35mm camera negative.

Retro Puppet Master is available on May 16th. Special features include New Director’s Commentary, 2 hours of behind the scenes footage (with commentary), vintage Videozone special and more.
