Strafe Gets an Ultraviolent Live Action Launch Trailer

Screw eight-gen graphics… it’s time to go retro once again as the gore-soaked shooter Strafe, which pays homage to both Doom and Quake, is now available on PS4 and Steam. Head here to buy the collector’s edition in addition to the vinyl soundtrack.

In Strafe you’re tasked with collecting scrap (which serves as a form of currency) from the derelict spacecraft Icarus. If you played Doom or Quake back in the day, then you know what you’re in for.

Published by Devolver Digital and developed by Pixel Titans, Strafe also looks like it could be one of the goriest games of 2017 so far. The fountains of blood and body parts that litter the environment will never disappear, leading to the creation of what the game’s official description refers to as “death art.”

It’s about time we had something to remind us how fun first-person shooters could be before everything tried to be the next Call of Duty. The ultraviolent live-action trailers below are kinda neat too.

From the Press Release:
STRAFE® is a roguelike first-person shooter pushing the limits of computer-generated photorealism and hardcore sci-fi action into unimaginable territory. With virtually no load times and infinite replayability, just choose your gun and be instantly blown away by:

  • FACE MELTING SPEED! The blazing fast action will hit you like the blast wave of a 50-megaton thermonuclear warhead, liquefying your skin cells and rupturing your internal organs, yet still leave you coming back for more.
  • PERMANENT DAMAGE AND GIBS! ÜBER-GORE® technology means enemies explode with near never-ending fountains of blood, which never fades away. Create wicked works of death art that mark your explored territory from the unventured.
  • ENDLESS CHANGING LEVELS! Randomly-generated levels are always different and violently unpredictable. Rooms, enemies, power-ups, monster closets, and secrets move around every time you die and die and die and die!

As a Scrapper on a impossibly dangerous mission at the edge of the galaxy, you only have one life to navigate all the nightmarish terrains of STRAFE®. When you die, nothing will ever be the same again.

STRAFE® ALSO INCLUDES:

  • Four unique zones (three levels each) that demand different death-defying gameplay styles
  • Gun upgrades that turn your average tool of death into an outright Holocaust machine
  • 30+ insane weapons and 20+ bloodthirsty enemies
  • The sickest soundtrack of 1996 and at least the next 25 years
  • Unsigned 32-bit colors
  • Lifelike digital gravity
  • Colored lighting
  • And more!

Amazon Heads Down Carnival Row

Once upon a time Guillermo del Toro was attached to work on A Killing on Carnival Row. Sadly, that didn’t happen. Bright side? The project is officially on its way as a new Amazon series!

From the Press Release:
Amazon today announced that it has greenlit original one-hour neo-Victorian fantasy “Carnival Row” to series. The eight-episode Amazon Original Series will be produced by Legendary Television and written and executive produced by showrunner Rene Echevarria (“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Teen Wolf,” “Castle,” “Medium”). Joining Echevarria are Paul McGuigan (Victor Frankenstein, “Luke Cage,” “Sherlock”), who is set to direct and executive produce, and Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim, Clash of the Titans), who will serve as executive producer and wrote the original script, A Killing on Carnival Row, which appeared on the very first installment of the Hollywood Blacklist in 2005.

“Carnival Row” is a fantasy-noir set in a neo-Victorian city. Mythical creatures fleeing their war-torn homeland have gathered in the city, and tensions are simmering between citizens and the growing immigrant population. We follow the investigation of a string of unsolved murders which are eating away at whatever uneasy peace still exists.

“There has never been a series like ‘Carnival Row’ before,” said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy, Drama and VR, Amazon Studios. “The scope of the storytelling combined with the uniqueness of the world, themes, and aesthetics haven’t been on TV before. A simple police investigation will lead us down a remarkable journey in a world where humans and creatures co-exist. We’re so excited about what Rene, Travis, and Paul are creating; and we can’t wait to bring it to customers.”

“‘Carnival Row’ is inspiringly ambitious,” said Lauren Whitney, President of Scripted Television at Legendary, “and timely in a way that we never could have anticipated. We are thrilled to have excellent partners at Amazon and the infinitely talented trio of Echevarria, McGuigan, and Beacham as the driving force behind this show.”

The series is scheduled to begin filming in the fall of 2018 for a 2019 release.

Rene Echevarria was most recently an executive producer on “Teen Wolf” and prior to that was an executive producer on “Terra Nova.” Additional executive producing credits include “Medium” and “Dark Angel.” He also co-created the critically-acclaimed USA series “The 4400.” Echevarria comes out of the “Star Trek” camp, having worked on “Deep Space Nine” and “Star Trek: Next Generation.”

“Carnival Row” will be available using the Amazon Prime Video app for TVs, connected devices including Fire TV and mobile devices, or online at Amazon.com/originals. For a list of all Amazon Video compatible devices, click here. The series will be a global release for members to watch via the Prime Video app or online at PrimeVideo.com in more than 200 countries and territories.

In late March we got an update from Bryan Bertino on The Strangers 2 that indicated things were moving along on the project; and today, with the film heading to the Cannes Market, we finally have some casting news to share!

From the Press Release:
BLOOM announced today that Emmy Award-nominated Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men,” The Neon Demon, Drive), Bailee Madison (“Once Upon a Time,” Just Go with It), and Lewis Pullman (Aftermath, Battle of the Sexes) (pictured below, L-R) have joined the cast of The Strangers 2. Johannes Roberts (The Other Side of the Door, 47 Meters Down) will direct based on a script by Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) and Ben Ketai.

BLOOM first introduced the project at the Berlin International Film Festival and will continue sales in Cannes. The Fyzz Facility Pictures’ Wayne Marc Godfrey (Wind River, The Foreigner), Robert Jones (Centurion, The Usual Suspects), Mark Lane, and James Harris (47 Meters Down, I Am Not A Serial Killer) are producing, in association with Relativity Media. The Fyzz Facility is also serving as a financier on the project. Aviron will be distributing the film in the U.S. and Canada.

Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy, who produced 2008’s The Strangers as well as successful genre titles such as The Bye Bye Man, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and Oculus, will serve as executive producer. Principal photography will begin on May 30th in Los Angeles.

The Strangers 2 follows a family whose road trip takes a turn when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park; after the power goes out, they decide to hunker down for the night in a borrowed trailer. Under the cover of darkness three familiar masked psychopaths pay them a visit to test their every limit.

Starz Renews American Gods for a Second Season

With just two episodes under its belt, “American Gods” is already a hit for Starz so of course the network has awarded the show with a second season, which is expected to launch in mid-2018.

Per Deadline, while the specific number of episodes for the second season of the FremantleMedia North America-produced series has yet to be determined, it’s expected to include at least the same number of eps (i.e., eight) that the first season has.

“Bryan Fuller, Michael Green, and Neil Gaiman have evolved the art form of television narratively, structurally, and graphically with ‘American Gods’; and we’re thrilled to be working again with these artists as they continue to build the worlds and wars of the gods,” Starz programming president Carmi Zlotnik said today.

“’American Gods’ has been a groundbreaking series born out of belief, and it’s thrilling to be partnered with Starz to continue this ambitious story,” added FremantleMedia North America’s co-CEO Craig Cegielski. “Neil Gaiman, Bryan Fuller, and Michael Green have ignited a conversation through cinematic magic, presented through a diverse ensemble of actors that continue to keep us engaged and inspired.”

“American Gods” stars Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon), Kristin Chenoweth (Easter, aka Ostara), Jeremy Davies (Jesus Christ), Emily Browning (Laura Moon), Ian McShane (Mr. Wednesday), Pablo Schreiber (Mad Sweeney), Orlando Jones (Mr. Nancy), Yetide Badaki (Bilquis), Bruce Langley (Technical Boy), Corbin Bernsen (Vulcan), Crispin Glover (Mr. World), Demore Barnes (Mr. Ibis), Jonathan Tucker (Low Key Lyesmith), Gillian Anderson (Media), Peter Stormare (Czernobog), Dane Cook (Robbie), and Cloris Leachman (Zorya Vechernyaya).

The series is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel of the same name, which has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity, and drugs.

“American Gods” is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”) are writers and showrunners. David Slade (“Hannibal,” The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) directed the pilot and additional episodes.

Caught up on the show? Here’s a preview of what’s ahead this weekend in Episode 1.03, “Head Full of Snow.”

“American Gods” Episode 1.03 – “Head Full of Snow” (airs 5/14/17)
Shadow questions the terms of his employment when Mr. Wednesday informs him of his plan to rob a bank (because, naturally, every army needs a source of funding). And just when Shadow thought his life couldn’t get any more complicated, he returns to his motel room to a surprising discovery.

Cult of Chucky – This is Chucky. This is Chucky on Drugs. Any Questions?

$

While we all wait patiently for the next chapter in the Child’s Play franchise, Cult of Chucky, to grace and splatter our screens, news continues to flow like an open wound. Recently CBC caught up with director Don Mancini, who had this to say about the next flick and its frosty locale…

I wrote it with snow in mind. We shot all night outside for one sequence, and we got snowed out with a blizzard. We had to shut down for safety reasons. Our zoom lens also froze. But the snow was great — that really paid off. It gave the film a Shining-like feel.

He continued, “In Cult of Chucky, we’re doing a mental institution movie. There will be dream sequences and lots of surrealism. This will be Chucky on drugs. To me, I don’t know why people would take the approach of doing the same things with a sequel. Sequels offer the opportunity to subvert expectations. All good storytelling is about good surprises. Sequels, by their very nature, bring baggage — how can I subvert them in a fun way?

Yes, can we have this now please?

About Cult of Chucky:
Cult of Chucky, an all-new spellbinding chapter of the Child’s Play thriller franchise, began principal photography in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on January 9, 2017. The seventh film in the blockbuster series will be released in a bone-chilling Unrated Version on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD in fall 2017 — just in time for Halloween. Packed with the franchise’s signature blend of horror and demented humor, Cult of Chucky is the latest production from Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production entity of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 30 years since Chucky first terrified moviegoers in Child’s Play,” said Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Universal 1440 Entertainment. “Since then the films have generated millions in worldwide box office revenue. Now Chucky’s back with more scores to settle in his trademark twisted style, and you can bet he won’t stop until he gets his revenge.”

Fiona Dourif (Curse of Chucky) returns as Nica, the wheelchair-bound heroine framed by Chucky for the bloody murders of her entire family. She’s joined by franchise veterans Alex Vincent (Child’s Play, Child’s Play 2) and Jennifer Tilly (Monsters, Inc., Bride of Chucky), with Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) once again providing the eerie, unnerving voice of the demon doll possessed by the spirit of a maniacal serial killer.

Don Mancini, writer of the Child’s Play franchise, is the executive producer of the new film, which he also directs from his original script. Longtime franchise producer David Kirschner (The Pagemaster, Frailty) is joined this time by Ogden Gavanski (Warm Bodies, Immortals). The production team includes special-effects guru and associate producer Tony Gardner (Zombieland, Curse of Chucky), director of photography Michael Marshall (“Killjoys”), production designer Craig Sandells (Mother’s Day), and costume designer Patricia J. Henderson (ATM).

Synopsis:
Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all.

Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky’s now grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her, he’ll have to get past Tiffany (Oscar nominee Jennifer Tilly), Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.

We’re still about a week away from the release of Alien: Covenant (review), and the news keeps on trucking in! Sit back, kids, ’cause you’re likely to be here for a bit!

First up, Ridley Scott spoke to Yahoo! about Prometheus‘ influence on his new film.

We discovered from [Prometheus] that [the fans] were really frustrated. They wanted to see more of the original [monster], and I thought he was definitely cooked, with an orange in his mouth. So I thought: ‘Wow, okay, I’m wrong’. The fans, in a funny kind of way – they’re not the final word – but they are the reflection of your doubts about something. And then you realize ‘I was wrong’ or ‘I was right.’ I think that’s where it comes in. I think you’re not sensible if you don’t actually take [the fans’ reaction] into account.

Then IGN is home to a video in which Ridley Scott explains his inspiration for Alien: Covenant‘s new creature, the Neomorph.

From there we even have a new Facehugger-fueled clip for you!

Finally, for those fans with an artistic flair… dig on this incredible Xenomorph origami from artist Kade Chan!

Look for Alien: Covenant everywhere on May 19th.

Hulu is hitting it out of the park lately with original content like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and the network will soon be adding “Castle Rock” to its roster. Today we finally have some casting news for the upcoming Bad Robot/Warner Bros. TV project.

Per Deadline, André Holland (Moonlight, “The Knick,” “American Horror Story: Roanoke”) has been cast as the lead in Hulu’s upcoming psychological horror series. Holland will play Henry, a Death Row attorney with a unique and complicated history in Castle Rock, Maine.

The series, which hails from JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV, is based on the world created by Stephen King in his various works. It is named after Castle Rock, the fictional town in King’s native Maine that is featured prominently in a number of his novels, novellas, and short stories.

“Manhattan” creator Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason developed the project for television, based on characters and situations created by Stephen King, and serve as writers. They executive produce with Abrams, Ben Stephenson, and Liz Glotzer.

“Castle Rock” reunites Hulu, King, Bad Robot, and Warner Bros., which previously collaborated on event series “11.22.63” based on King’s same-named novel. The series will stream exclusively in the U.S. on Hulu, and Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution will distribute globally.

Synopsis:
A psychological horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, “Castle Rock” combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. “Castle Rock” is an original suspense/thriller — a reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories.

The spooky goodness that is Narcosis (review) is now available on the Xbox One marketplace and if you have the scratch you’re gonna wanna grab this one ASAP!

From the Press Release:
Franco-Californian game developer Honor Code, Inc.’s debut effort, Narcosis, is available now on Xbox One. Since launching last month on Steam and the Oculus Store, the game has garnered critical acclaim for its abyssal ambience, mind-bending challenges, and subtle, thought-provoking narrative. The “#Safe+Dry“ launch trailer demonstrates some of the surreal sights, sounds and situations encountered in the abyss.

Survival, horror at the sunless depths of the Pacific Ocean. Stranded on the seafloor with low light and few tools, an industrial diver takes desperate steps to surface before his dwindling oxygen — and sanity — give out.

First conceived as a student project, this first person survival story unfolds from inside a “walking coffin” — a half-ton, high-tech deep-sea dive suit — following an industrial catastrophe. Influenced and inspired by a growing appetite for unconventional horror and narrative-driven games, Narcosis is rooted in reality, but steeped in the surreal.

Features:

  • Pressure Kills: High-stress situations accelerate oxygen intake, distorting sight, sound, space and time.
  • Hostile Waters: A knife, flashlight and flares are essential to surviving the nightmarish flora and fauna of the abyss.
  • Phantom Narrative: The survivor’s account unfolds in inexplicable ways alongside the player’s journey.
  • Beyond Good and Evil: No shadowy organizations or eldritch terrors at Narcosis’ dark heart, only primal fears and human limits.
