E3 2012: Exclusive Preview: No Man's Land

Free to play games have been thriving on the PC and mobile devices for quite a while now, but they’ve never quite gotten a foothold in the console market. Sony, along with developer VEEMEE, is looking to change that with their new Playstation Home based shooter No Man’s Land.

No Man’s Land is a multiplayer only, third person cover based shooter set in a post-apocalyptic urban landscape. While that may sound like 90% of all shooters released nowadays, there is a wrinkle that makes this one stand out from the rest: You don’t have full control of your character. All the movement is strictly cover to cover.

How this works is that when you want to move, you push the left stick in a direction, and points of light will appear, indicating where cover points you can move to are. Then just highlight one of them and press the X button, and your character begins to run in that direction until he reaches his destination. While this may sound limiting, it’s actually a fairly interesting way to deal with some of the problems inherent to the genre. Not having to work about how to get from point a to point b and just focusing on putting yourself in the right position to take out your enemies could be an intriguing spin on a familiar concept if handled correctly.

I had a chance to get a little hands-on time at E3 as well as speak with Sony community manager Paul Sullivan, which you can see below.

Right off the bat I thought the controls felt a little awkward. Moving the left stick and it not resulting in my character moving an inch felt a little jarring at first, but after a few minutes I was starting to get the hang of it. Even after getting a little more accustomed to the controls, I was having problems getting to the cover I was intending to end up at, however. Sometimes I’d point to a piece of cover I wanted to get behind and it would jump to the other side of the cover I was already behind or take me to a piece of cover other than the one I intended. As a whole the movement felt a little awkward and clunky.

Then, of course, there’s the shooting, which feels pretty much how you’d expect. Hit the left shoulder to aim and the right shoulder to shoot, fairly standard stuff. It seemed to take an abnormally large amount of rounds to take someone down, though. Even when I had an enemy totally flanked and shooting them directly in the face, it seemed to take an entire magazine before they finally bit the dust. That may have just been a byproduct of me only having access to the standard pistol. Also, you can’t fire, or reload, while on the move. That led to some awkward moments where an enemy and I would both break from cover simultaneously and run past each other without any hostility whatsoever. It just felt kind of strange.

While it may not have set my world on fire, No Man’s Land seems like an interesting little experiment. Having a fairly full featured shooter not only being housed in Playstation Home but also being free to play is an exciting look at what may be possible on the service in the future. And hey, at least the price is right.

They didn’t have a solid release date to announce, but I was told they hope to have it out by the end of June.

We're always on the lookout for cool horror collectibles for you guys (and yes, ourselves, too) so when word landed in our inbox about Multiverse Studio's two new additions to its Bobble Budds line - Patient Zero and Stabby the Ninja - of course we had to share! Check 'em out.

From the Press Release:
Everyone’s favorite silent assassin and undead brain-eater (Sneaky the Ninja and Bitey the Zombie, respectively) have new companions!

Patient Zero (Pat) is the zombie that started the undead pandemic. Nobody knows who he was, where he came from, what his goals, his hopes or dreams were, or where that big nasty gash on his arm came from, except for those closest to him. Too bad their brains were the first ones he ate after reanimating in Central City Hospital because they were, in fact, closest to him, literally. In any case, we call him Pat, because nobody has objected to that name, especially him. If you happen to spot Pat, or any of his undead friends for that matter, you are advised to keep a wide berth. You don't want to catch something from him, or much worse, him to catch you.

Multiverse Studio Unveils Two New Bobble Budds - Patient Zero and Stabby the Ninja

Stabby the Ninja is the twin sister of Sneaky the Ninja and the competitive one of the duo. Tasked by her clan to eliminate the undead outbreak, Stabby dedicates her every waking moment to the cause. While not as stealthy as her brother, Stabby is extremely lethal with edged weapons and relentlessly stalks the undead wherever they may arise. Currently she is in pursuit of the root of the global contagion, Patient Zero.

Multiverse Studio Unveils Two New Bobble Budds - Patient Zero and Stabby the Ninja

Each Bobble Budd figure measures 3-1/2 inches tall and features exclusive bobble head locking mechanism for optimal functionality and display.

Patient Zero and Stabby the Ninja will be available at select online retail outlets in July, 2012. Bitey the Zombie and Sneaky the Ninja (pictured below) are available for purchase now at Sota Toys.

B-Sides: Sex Is Not the Problem But This Song Certainly Is

This weekend Rock of Ages terrorizes theaters with 1980’s rock musical overload. This seems like as good a time as any to horrify you with a musical number from a Reagan era sci-fi rock musical. Sex is the least of Voyage of the Rock Aliens' problems.

How does one go from directing Clint Eastwood as “Dirty Harry” in The Enforcer and Chuck f’ing Norris in Forced Vengeance to directing Pia Zadora, Jermaine Jackson, Craig Sheffer, and Michael Berryman in something called Voyage of the Rock Aliens?

Pia Zadora began her acting career playing a green-skinned Martian child in the 1964 holiday bad movie classic Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Who would have ever imagined that would be the pinnacle of her career?

Twenty years later, an all grown up Pia Zadora starred in an even worse out-of-this-world musical comedy titled Voyage of the Rock Aliens directed by James Fargo about extraterrestrials landing on Earth in search of the source of rock ‘n roll.

One of the big musical numbers of this 1984 turkey involves Pia Zadora and others performing a song and dance routine to a little ditty titled “Sex Is Not the Problem”. There’s probably a good reason why very few famous musicals feature elaborately staged musical numbers inside of bathrooms and locker rooms.

Q&A with The Walking Dead Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd

$
0
0

Time for another weekly Q&A from the set of "The Walking Dead". Today Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd describes sending Season 3's extras to zombie graduate school and predicts who would win in a walker vs. pirate battle.

Q: You guys are now shooting Episode 303. How are things on set?

A: They've been great...We shut down the town [we're shooting in], and we had a couple hundred fans surrounding the town. And they stuck around not able to see anything, so I have to give them full credit for their persistence.

Q: This season is the longest yet with 16 episodes. What kind of challenges does a longer season present?

A: It's really a marathon this year. The advantage is we have had some cooler weather in May, and we'll be going into cooler weather again in October. The challenge is maintaining the same intense level of storytelling that our audience expects of us, and we certainly plan to deliver on that.

Q: There are so many new locations and characters this season, what are you most excited about?

A: I will say that I loved the farm, but it is good to be off the farm. And the contrast between our [two main sets] this season is so great...We're setting up this first community that is functioning in a post-zombie apocalypse. We get to see not only the advantages of putting civilization back on its feet again but also the dark forces at work in what may seem like a Utopia.

Q: A lot of this season is filmed on an air-conditioned soundstage. Are you relieved to be inside, or do you miss the outdoor shoots?

A: We were shooting in the woods again a few days ago, which I'm sure will always be a component of our series. And we encountered the ticks and the chiggers and the wildlife again, so they reminded us of many of our travails last season. Plus we were hit by a deluge of a rainstorm and we had to evacuate that set... But the air-conditioned stages are very much enjoyed by cast and crew alike. [Laughs]

Q&A with The Walking Dead Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd

Q: This is your third season of "The Walking Dead". What's the secret to keeping the show feeling fresh and scary?

A: It's really important to focus on making the story as richly character-driven as possible because the scares and the sense of jeopardy only come with identifying with those characters when they're in jeopardy.

Q: There are many new human threats this season, which you've always warned about, but what about the zombies? What new tricks can we expect from them?

A: Obviously we have the absolute best makeup effects team on the planet, led by Greg Nicotero... And every year he ups his game. So we're not just seeing the same old thing. This season we're going to have puppeted animatronic zombies, and that's something that we haven't seen before.

Q: Have the zombie extras improved their technique over three seasons?

A: [The zombies] get better and better. Now they've had three years of zombie college, and they're about to go to graduate school... Our Walkers all have a history that the performer brings to the table, which is, "Okay where was I bitten, what part of my body has been affected, and how long have I been in the zombie state?" And that determines whether one arm isn't working or if they were bitten on the neck, maybe their head hangs over to one side.

Q: Next month will be your third visit to Comic-Con to give fans a look at "The Walking Dead". What can fans expect?

A: We like to bring a special reel for the fans at Comic-Con so they can see a special sneak peak of Season 3 before everyone else. It's sort of a reward for waiting in line to get into the hall. And we'll be bringing a larger contingent of our cast and crew than ever this year. And also because we began shooting a lot earlier this year, the reel will contain a lot more footage than it has in the past.

Q: We've heard that you're working on a pirate TV show. Any similarities between pirates and zombies?

A: The thing about pirates is they're a little easier to kill, but at the same time they won't stop at anything either. They're all out, all the time, and they're not easily dissuaded once they've got their eye on the prize.

Q: But who would win a battle between the two?

A: I think it would depend on how many zombies there were and how quickly [the pirates] figure out that you have to destroy the brain or they'll keep on coming.

More Monsters Emerge from a Dark Continent

If you were a fan of Gareth Edwards' flick Monsters and enjoy seeing creatures hug, we've got some good news for you ... another flick is on the way to expand upon the world laid out by Edwards. Hopefully said world can go in a darker direction.

According to Screen Daily, Tom Green (Misfits) is taking the reins on the newly titled film Monsters: Dark Continent. Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas had originally been attached to direct the sequel, but obviously things have changed. Jay Basu, who wrote Fast Girls and The Dinosaur Project, penned the new screenplay for Vertigo.

The original sequel synopsis read as follows - The tale is set in a walled city, as a “Heart of Darkness” story about two brothers finding each other in a world of monsters. The variety of aliens will differ in the next installment.

More on this one as it comes.

From the Press Release
FEARnet, the leading cable destination for horror, thriller and suspense content, will team with Capcom® and its upcoming Resident Evil® 6 video game and MPI’s Dark Sky Films to celebrate the horror genre at Comic-Con this year, hosting “Con-of-the Dead,” an evening party saluting both fans and industry insiders alike. This invitation-only party will fittingly take place Friday, July 13, at San Diego’s Gothic-inspired Voyeur nightclub from 6:00 to 8:30 PM PT.

“Con-of-the-Dead” guests will experience an interactive event complete with playable demo stations featuring Resident Evil 6, a VIP suite decked out by Dark Sky Films, music spun by LA’s DJ Amanda Jones, go-go ghoul dancers, customized refreshments, and ‘zombie-fied’ photo booth.

FANGORIA Entertainment, Screamfest Horror Film Festival, and horror-centric websites DreadCentral.com and Shocktillyoudrop.com will co-sponsor the event, with other partnerships soon to be announced.

FEARnet will team up with the 6th Annual Zombie Walk: San Diego, where 300 participating zombies will win admittance to FEARnet’s “Con-of-the-Dead” party taking place that same evening. The lucky undead winners will be able to enter the event after completing the walk in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District.

Peter Block, President and General Manager of FEARnet, is enthusiastic about the network’s inclusion in the Comic-Con festivities. “Our main goal at Comic-Con is to build an event that would allow fans to engage with our network firsthand,” Block said. “We are excited for the chance to showcase our network to invited members of the media and entertainment industry, as well as selected participants from San Diego’s famous Zombie Walk.”

The emerging network, now in more than seven million U.S. homes, is expanding into San Diego on June 30, as part of Cox Communications’ continued FEARnet rollout. FEARnet will be viewed on Cox’s Movie Pak at channel position 311 prior to the start of the international convention.

“Cox Communications is an important provider for our rapidly growing popular network,” said Block. “We’re thrilled to be distributed on the third-largest cable company in the U.S. as part of Cox’s Movie Pak and exclusively deliver genre-themed content in time for Comic-Con. Residents there have a deep appreciation for the genre, and we’re thrilled to be able to bring them over 300 movie titles a year from our robust film library.”

In addition, cast members of FEARnet’s first original TV series, “Holliston,” featuring Adam Green, Joe Lynch, Corri English, Laura Ortiz, and GWAR front man Oderus Urungus, will also be on hand, taking part in a panel presentation hosted by a surprise celebrity.

FEARnet will cover the latest genre news at Comic-Con and continue to produce original content for FEARnet.com, its VOD channel and linear TV network. FEARnet’s coverage of Comic-Con is sponsored by Capcom’s Resident Evil 6, which will be infecting stores on October 2, 2012, and is currently available for pre-order.

    About the Series:
"666 Park Avenue": Anything you desire can be yours … for a price. "Lost"’s Terry O’Quinn and "Desperate Housewives"’ Vanessa Williams headline this scary, seductive drama from Alloy Entertainment as the owners of a Manhattan apartment building who recruit an idealistic young couple to manage the historic site with a dark history. The series also stars Rachael Taylor ("Charlie’s Angels"), Dave Annable ("Brothers & Sisters"), Robert Buckley ("One Tree Hill"), Mercedes Masohn ("The Finder"), Helena Mattsson (Iron Man 2) and Samantha Logan ("Law & Order: SVU"). Matthew Miller ("Chuck"), David Wilcox ("Fringe"), Leslie Morgenstein ("The Vampire Diaries"), Gina Girolamo ("The Secret Circle") and Alex Graves ("Fringe") are the executive producers. Television’s Preview Night screening at Comic-Con on Wednesday, July 11, or during the "666 Park Avenue" session on Friday, July 13.

"Arrow": From executive producers Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern), Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern), Andrew Kreisberg ("Fringe") and David Nutter ("Smallville"), hard-hitting action series "Arrow" reinvents the DC Comics hero. After being marooned for five years on a remote island, billionaire Oliver Queen returns home with a mysterious agenda and a very lethal new set of skills that he uses in a war on crime. The series stars Stephen Amell ("Private Practice"), Colin Donnell ("Pan Am"), Katie Cassidy ("Supernatural"), David Ramsey ("Dexter"), Willa Holland ("The O.C.") with Susanna Thompson ("Dragonfly") and Paul Blackthorne ("The River"). Watch the full-length pilot at Warner Bros. Television’s Preview Night screening at Comic-Con on Wednesday, July 11, or during the "Arrow" session on Friday, July 13.

"Revolution": What would you do without it all? In "Revolution", an epic adventure thriller from "Supernatural"’s Eric Kripke, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and Iron Man’s Jon Favreau, a family struggles to reunite in a post-apocalyptic landscape of empty cities, local militias and heroic freedom fighters where every single piece of technology — phones, computers, cars, even lights — has mysteriously blacked out … forever. "Revolution" stars Billy Burke (Twilight films), Tracy Spiridakos ("Being Human"), Anna Lise Phillips (Animal Kingdom), Zak Orth (Wet Hot American Summer), Graham Rogers ("Memphis Beat"), J.D. Pardo (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2), Giancarlo Esposito ("Breaking Bad), David Lyons ("The Cape"), Maria Howell ("The Vampire Diaries") and Tim Guinee (Iron Man films) and is executive produced by Kripke, J.J. Abrams ("Fringe") and Bryan Burk ("Fringe"). Favreau directed the pilot and will serve as co-executive producer of the series, with Kathy Lingg ("Fringe") and producer Athena Wickham ("Fringe"). In an interview with NPR about The Wolf Gift, Ms. Rice noted: "You're writing about a vampire or you're writing about a werewolf, but you're really just writing about human beings."

Adam Green and BJ McDonnell Talk Hatchet 3

Adam Green and BJ McDonnell Talk Hatchet 3Filming of Hatchet 3 is wrapping soon down in the Big Easy, and recently a few of the folks behind this blood-soaked juggernaut--namely Jedi master Adam Green, director BJ McDonnell, and producer Sarah Elbert--showed up on TV to dish the swampy dirt!

Louisiana's FOX8 visited the set on Friday and got the first behind-the-scenes footage from the film, which features a quick shot of a very bloody Danielle Harris in the police station.

Hatchet 3 stars Danielle Harris, Kane Hodder, Derek Mears, Cody Blue Snider, Zach Galligan, Rileah Vanderbilt, Caroline Williams, Diane Goldner, Jason Trost, and Sean Whalen.

Hatchet 3 opens on the ultraviolent final shot of Hatchet 2 and continues the tale of the now iconic slasher villain Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder). As a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and carnage left behind from the first two films, Marybeth (Danielle Harris) hunts down the true secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left the ghost of Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.

The sequel is a co-production of MPI/Dark Sky Films and Green’s Los Angeles-based ArieScope Pictures. The film marks cinematographer McDonnell's directorial debut after having handled A and B camera operations on such features as Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake, Timur Bekmambetov's upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and Adam Green's first two Hatchet films.

Spellbound is a fast-paced multiplayer game that puts you into a battle for your life against other wizards. You will have a wide array of spells but must use them strategically since depleting your mana too fast may be the end of you!

    From the Press Release
Spellbound is a multiplayer spell-flinger where Wizards with hats use a wide variety of magic to defeat opponents who also wear hats. Spells range from the short-ranged Shock, which delivers a blast of lightning from the Wizard’s hand, to the explosive Seed of Fire, which sows seeds of flame and reaps burnt hats, to the gale-force whirlwind that is Dark Storm, to throwable explosive potions such as Acid Bomb and Icy Hot Tonic.

Currently available for play are Death Match and Horde modes, as well as a single-player version of Horde mode that may leave prospective Wizards throwing their hats to the ground in frustration. Multiplayer Death Match and Horde support at least eight prospective Wizards at a time; they will be able to cooperate with or incinerate each other at their discretion.

Fight Your Way Through the Dungeons of Rainbow Moon

Rainbow Moon will be arriving for PlayStation 3 this July. In Rainbow Moon you will step into the shoes of Baldren—who has been warped to the planet Rainbow Moon—where he must fight the monsters within its dungeons to return home in one piece!

This is one haunting RPG that you will not want to miss!

    From the Press Release
Cursed by his arch-nemesis, Baldren founds himself warped to Rainbow Moon. And to make things worse, Baldren isn't only stranded in an unknown place – he has also opened a dimensional gate, out of which troops of monsters are crawling, turning this once peaceful planet into a real hell.

The residents of Rainbow Moon who have found themselves in this sudden and unpleasant situation react suspiciously and even nastily, which certainly doesn't make things any easier for our brave hero. There's only one thing for Baldren to do: he has to seal the gate and warp himself back to his home planet. This is easier said than done, since the gate can only be sealed by a dimensional gate staff and no such object is available anywhere on Rainbow Moon. However Baldren knows that he can create one if he finds the right materials. He needs seven magical artifacts, said to be hidden deep inside Rainbow Moon's dungeons.

Rainbow Moon will be available for PlayStation 3 in July 2012.

You can visit the official Rainbow Moon website to learn more about the game.

    From the Press Release
The Sims 3 Supernatural gives players the new ability to create werewolves, fairies, witches and more intriguing vampires directly in the Create A Sim tool, customizing characteristics that range from the hairiness of a werewolf’s body to the shape of a fairy’s wings. While playing as supernatural Sims, players will discover new abilities, traits, skills and interactions that enhance their gameplay, including delayed aging for fairies and vampires, innate magic channeling for witches, and lycanthropy for werewolves, which enables them to control their animal instincts and transform at will.

In The Sims 3 Supernatural, players also have the option to learn magical crafts by casting spells and brewing elixirs that will charm or hex their Sims’ lives. These potent concoctions have a wide variety of effects from career-boosting to weight loss and even zombification. The zombification elixir will turn unsuspecting Sims into brain-hungry, shuffling monsters that are driven to wreak havoc on the town. In addition, players have the ability to share their brews with any friends who have The Sims 3.

As players delve into the world of the supernatural and explore the eerie new town of Moonlight Falls, they will uncover enchanted objects and gothic décor, including a sliding bookcase that conceals a hidden lair and a powerful mirror with magical interactions. Players may also choose to embark on a new career path as a mystic fortune-teller or build their skill to become an alchemic master. Meanwhile, the onset of the mysterious lunar cycle will unveil strange revelations, secrets and mysteries that will shake up the entire town.

E3 2012: Blast From the Past: A Look at the Videogame Museum

E3 is all about showing off the future of the gaming industry: the biggest and brightest, the bleeding edge. But sometimes it’s a good idea to take a look back and see how we’ve arrived at where we are today.

Tucked away in a corner of the L.A. Convention Center’s West Hall, away from the madness that was the Big 3’s booths, was the Videogame Museum, a collection of artifacts from the history of gaming from the extremely early days of consoles like the Vectrex all the way up to the Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64 and pretty much everything in-between. And, unlike most everything else on the show floor, there was rarely a line to get some play-time with them. It was like the bizarro E3.

While jamming to the beats by rapper Random (aka Mega Ran), I had a chance to get a look at some of the awesome stuff on display. Check it out below as well as Dread Central’s photo gallery from the floor of E3 earlier this month.
