The very first bit of eye candy in promotion of Marcus Nispel's new flick, Backmask, has arrived; and the restraint shown with lens flaring is admirable. They're just on the cusp of casting those angelic halos! Dig 'em!

Gage Golightly, Brittany Curran, Stephen Lang, Kelly Blatz,, Brett Dier, Nick Nicotera, Nick Nordella, and Michael Ormsby star. Kirsten Elms penned the script that follows a group of teenagers who accidentally release an evil spirit that starts to possess them one by one.

Check out the goods below courtesy of the Daily Dead!

Synopsis
During a sex, drugs, and rock-fueled party, six small-town teenagers find an old vintage record and decide to play it backwards in order to listen for any subliminal/satanic messages. Lo and behold, a seemingly malevolent spirit quickly infiltrates the group, wreaking havoc as it moves from one body to another. Eventually, however, it's revealed that the spirit in question is actually trying to convey a message....and that the real source of horror isn't particularly paranormal, but rather something (or someone) much closer to home.

James Broderick Guest Blog: Frankenstein Gets a Makeover

$

In early June we told you about author and professor James F. Broderick's Now a Terrifying Motion Picture!, after which he offered to write a guest blog for us. The result is this hilarious satire about how Hollywood often ridiculously distorts classic works for contemporary audiences.

James Broderick Guest Blog: Frankenstein Gets a Makeover

[The following information – compiled and transcribed from various legal pads, voice recorders, and Blackberries of certain movie studio executives – reveals the extent of Hollywood’s interest in the Frankenstein story and the desperation to find a new angle for a remake that will appeal to a contemporary, teen-aged audience. This sheaf of papers and transcripts, currently in the hands of a major literary agency, has been documented as authentic and will be published next year as part of a larger cache of documents under the title I Know What You Did Last Pitch Meeting: Horror Movies They Thought You’d Actually Pay To See. The author/compiler of this work wishes to remain anonymous. The names of the studio executives have been redacted for legal reasons.]

STUDIO EXEC #1: (first part of sentence is garbled) …and then – whoosh – the creature appears!

STUDIO EXEC #2: But why, exactly, is he naked?

STUDIO EXEC #1: She.

STUDIO EXEC #2: (After a pause) Ah… (scribbling happily). Tell me again how the creature tracked down the posse of tormentors?

STUDIO EXEC #1: Hacked their Facebook page.

STUDIO EXEC #2: (Nodding as he writes) Got it. That’s good.

[Pages missing here. Notes resume in a different hand, date uncertain]

PRODUCER: …Won’t work – he flopped in that disaster film last quarter. We gotta go with somebody else.

WRITER: So who you looking at? Brad Pitt?

PRODUCER: Nope. Too expensive.

WRITER: George Clooney?

PRODUCER: Too good looking.

WRITER: Jim Carrey?

PRODUCER: Too manic.

WRITER: So what are we left with?

PRODUCER: (Emphatically) Chris Farley.

WRITER: Chris Farley? But—

PRODUCER: Perfect body type! He’s a natural for the creature! Remember that scene in Tommy Boy where he puts on David Spade’s blazer?

WRITER: “Fat guy in little jacket?” I love that scene! (audible laughter)

PRODUCER: Everybody does! Imagine two hours of that!

WRITER: But… um, isn’t Chris Farley dead?

PRODUCER: That’s the beauty of it! We’ll save a fortune on salary! We’ll build the part around outtakes and leftover footage from all his other films. It’s all CGI. It’s perfect! He plays a creature who gets resurrected from the dead and he, himself, is dead! Think of the marketing angle!

WRITER: (Sitting back, reflecting) You know, you might have something here. (Holds hands out in front of himself, spreads his hands out, reading imaginary words, excitedly) “YOU CAN’T KEEP A GOOD MAN DOWN!”

PRODUCER: (Writes that down, pauses) Hmmm. Was Frankenstein a good man? (They look at each other, unsure.)

WRITER: (slightly ashamed) I never read the book.

PRODUCER: It was a book?

[Meeting transcript ends; what now follows was reconstructed from a series of brief texts lifted from a well-known Hollywood agent’s Blackberry device found in the men’s room of a West L.A. sushi bar. They are somewhat disjointed. The editors have regularized spelling and punctuation for clarity.]

NOTES TO SELF:

CONSIDER MAKING THE CREATURE A MORMON (HOLD OFF FINAL DECISION UNTIL ELECTION);

INSTEAD OF A WINDMILL, STAGE CLIMACTIC FINAL MOB SCENE AT COMIC-CON;

POSSIBLE LOVE INTEREST BETWEEN CREATURE AND CREATOR, A LA “BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN”;

WORKING TITLE: “FRANKENSTEIN – ANOTHER AVATAR OF DESTRUCTION” (IN MARKETING CAMPAIGN, WE’LL SHORTEN IT TO SIMPLY “ANOTHER AVATAR.” CH-CHING!)

V/H/S Trailer Arrives with No Late Fees!

The official red band trailer for the long awaited Sundance sensation V/H/S (review here) is here, and we have every horrific pixel of it just waiting to dole out the frights!

Magnolia has announced that they're planning to roll the horror anthology film out on VOD August 31st with a limited theatrical run to follow beginning October 5th.

Segment directors include Adam Wingard (You're Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You're Next, Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with Radio Silence, two of whom were part of the YouTube sensations known as Chad, Matt and Rob (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Chad Villella).

Synopsis:
When a group of petty criminals are hired by a mysterious party to retrieve a rare piece of found footage from a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize that the job isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. In the living room a lifeless body holds court before a hub of old television sets, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of VHS tapes. As they search for the right one, they are treated to a seemingly endless number of horrifying videos, each stranger than the last.

Bringing together some of the top filmmakers in the game today, this wickedly conceived horror anthology sends the viewer through a gauntlet of suspense, terror, shock, and downright brutality—instantly distinguishing itself from a sea of lackluster found-footage horror flicks. The diverse and deviously creative minds behind V/H/S shatter any preconceived notions about the genre, making it feel inventive and captivating once again.

Newcomer Seth Meriwether Ties the Devil's Knot as Jason BaldwinAtom Egoyan's Devil's Knot, based on the events surrounding the recently freed West Memphis Three, has scored an actor to play one of the key players in this truly tragic and horrifying story. Read on for the latest!

Seventeen-year-old newcomer Seth Meriwether has been tapped to play West Memphis Three defendant Jason Baldwin in Egoyan's true crime flick. He joins Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth in the project that will be produced and financed by Worldview Entertainment. As Variety first reported last week, college drama student James Hamrick will make his feature debut playing key defendant Damien Echols. Also starring are Mireille Enos, Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon, Collette Wolfe, Alessandro Nivola and Kris Polaha, while Amy Ryan and Dane DeHaan remain in talks to join the ensemble. Kristopher Higgins will join Meriwether and Hamrick as fellow West Memphis Three member Misskelley Jr.

Based on journalist Mara Leveritt's bestselling book of the same name, Devil's Knot follows private detective Ron Lax (Firth), who took on the West Memphis Three case pro bono. He found DNA evidence linking Terry Hobbs (Alessandro Nivola), the stepfather of one of the three murdered boys, to material that was used to bind one of the victims -- evidence that helped convince a judge to release Baldwin, Misskelley Jr. and Echols last year.

Guest Blog: Author Karen Koehler's Look Back at Wolfen

$
0
0

Guest Blog: Author Karen Koehler's Look Back at Wolfen (click for larger image)Wolfen isn’t a werewolf movie. I should make that clear from the start. In fact, Wolfen has more in common with the monster animal genre of films so popular in the 1970’s like Willard, The Food of the Gods, and Night of the Lepus.

And like those movies (and their many nuclear predecessors like Them!, Black Scorpion, Tarantula, and other atomic creatures) Wolfen was, and remains, a movie about predation by things that are bigger, badder and more intelligent than we are. Except that the Wolfen were not created by mad science, atomic explosions or toxic waste. Rather, they evolved alongside human beings. They kill like animals but they think like humans. And humans are, in fact, their meat animals. They haven’t come to the ghettos because they were pushed out of their environment by some manmade factor, so forget that “going green” message. Rather, the Wolfen follow human migration. Without humans, they couldn’t exist.

NYPD Captain Dewey Wilson (played in a brilliantly detached and alcoholic fugue by Albert Finney) is assigned a bizarre string of violent murders with no seeming connection. A high-profile building magnate, a bodyguard, various homeless people and a scattering of cops are all found either missing or their throats ripped out by some enormously powerful beast. Wilson partners with criminal psychologist Becky Neff to solve the murders, and the two investigate everything from terrorism and voodoo to the idea that something both less and more human is out there slaughtering people in a secretive and yet discernible and intelligent pattern, if they can only find it.

Wolfen is part horror movie and part police investigation, but in many ways, it’s also a psychological thriller as the Wolfen pack play a very dangerous game of cat and mouse with Wilson and Neff, a game that eventually culminates in a confrontation that shakes and displaces everything that Wilson knows and nearly everything he’s ever believed in.

Wolfen has often been ragged on in the past, mostly because so many people who watch it insist on comparing it to the Whitley Strieber novel that inspired it. I love the book, but the truth is, I love the movie more. I love its despondent and nearly post-apocalyptic visuals and harrowing music. I love its gut-churning build-up of mysteries leading to horrors that lead to yet more mysteries, some of which can never really be solved—at least, not to the satisfaction of Dewey Wilson. Wilson’s life has been falling apart for years before the story even begins, but he clings stubbornly to resolving mysteries like an alcoholic clings to his last bottle. He’s naturally a man who finds order in chaos. Now, for the first time, he’s out of his element, and with nary a lonely English moor or horror set in site. The horror has hit close to home. The horror is home, in the urban decay all about him.

I love Wolfen because at one point in Wilson’s investigation, he seeks the advice of a group of Native Americans, themselves outsiders to the New York they’re helping to reconstruct, and their leader tells him, “They might be gods,” after which, Wilson develops the “eyes of the dead” rather than the “eyes of the hunter.” And therein lies the true horror of the Wolfen: that once our own fabricated veneer of the world we think we know is torn away, we really aren’t prepared to face the truth. What we perceive as evil might in fact be divine. What we assume is good and true might be our own self-induced fugue that we, much like Wilson, use to navigate through a completely alien landscape.

I also love Wolfen for its atmosphere, its mindless and almost joyous decay, its ruthless attempt to display the shit and squalor of a decaying civilization so awful it manages to transcend the hideous and become something close to art. The Wolfen, and the victims they pursue, move through orchards of shattered buildings, mind fields of broken church glass, and hills of human debris as if to state that yes, this is the end of the road, the new Eden, and the meek shall inherit the earth. Only, the meek won’t be us. The meek won’t be human at all. Because the Wolfen, like the Native Americans who revere them, know just how badly humankind is trashing their world.

They only need to wait. And watch.

More animated kid-friendly horrors are headed our way, and we're super happy that budding gorehounds will have plenty of cool things to cut their teeth on. Just think... after a few viewings of this and stuff like Monster House and even Igor, you can go right to Evil Dead!

According to Deadline, British Columbia-based film production and finance group Bron Studios is launching Bron Animation to develop and produce original kids animated fare for television and films. The aim is an “emphasis on absurd comedy with an edgy tone that parents will also enjoy”. The first project in production is a pair of TV specials based on Mighty Mighty Monsters, the Sean Patrick O’Reilly book series.

The books revolve around a group of classic movie monster kids — Frankenstein, Dracula, and Wolfman — who are expelled from monster school and sent to a human immersion program at a “normal” human middle school. Two hour-long specials are planned.

As well as the general release cinematic cut there will be an extended director’s cut which will be unveiled exclusively at Facebook.com/Darksiders, and tune into the first commercial break of “Leverage” tonight around 10pm on the FX channel to see the UK TV premiere.

Jim Huntley, Vice President of Global Brand Marketing commented: “After War is imprisoned for bringing about the apocalypse, Death’s whereabouts are shrouded in mystery. The Last Sermon gives fans an idea of what he may have been up to during that time.”

Darksiders II follows the exploits of DEATH, one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, in an action-packed tale that runs parallel to the events in the original Darksiders game. This epic journey propels DEATH through various light and dark realms as he tries to redeem his brother WAR, the horseman blamed for prematurely starting the Apocalypse in Darksiders.

Darksiders II will be available for PC and consoles in August 2012.

Vampire Season will release on your iOS devices on June 28th. Players will be required to gather all the monsters they can to fight off hunters and protect Dracula's crypt. Vampire Season will test your skills as you try to stay alive against the invaders!

From the Press Release
Today 6waves and Brainz, Latin America’s rising star game developers, announced their upcoming iOS tower defense/real-time strategy game, Vampire Season. On June 28, players must assemble an army of boogiemen, vampires, zombies, and other aberrations to protect the coveted coffin of Dracula sought after by vampire hunters, jocks, interior decorators, and other "classical" Dracula haters on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad devices.

Thanks to the 21st Century’s general lack of online privacy (Thanks 4square!), Dracula’s secret hideout has been revealed and it’s up to players’ defense and strategy skills to protect him from a horde of big game hunters. Vampire Season will stamp a grin on the evil side of people’s brains as it delivers nuclear pumpkins, disco balls, pirates, princes, ninjas, and other invaders that have no idea how they got there, and honestly, neither do we. This unique game not only respects the intelligence of its players, it challenges it.

Vampire Season Features:

  • Laugh your way through 30 swamps, dungeons, forests, and laboratories across three haunting worlds.
  • See beautiful (if monsters can be beautiful) 3D graphics and full-motion cinematics introducing each world.
  • Combine monsters to make up to 12 hybrid creatures like the Zampire that pack a double punch.
  • Advance through the stages of story mode or face off against a never-ending wave of enemies in survival mode in easy, medium, and (ack!) hard mode.
  • Compete in PvP against friends in survival mode via Facebook Connect and show them who’s boss.
  • Vampire Season will be available for iOS devices on June 28, 2012.

You can visit the official Brainz website to learn more Vampire Season.
