Rob Reiner Directing Psychological Thriller You Belong to Me

$

Rob Reiner Directing Psychological Thriller You Belong to MeRob Reiner hasn't directed a horror film since 1990's Misery, but that's about to change with You Belong to Me, which he just signed onto. The film, said to fall in the psychological thriller category with comparisons being made to Cape Fear, was written by David Murray.

Richard Lewis and his Southpaw Entertainment banner will produce with Scott Steindorff of Stone Village, along with Alan Greisman. Steindorff's Scott Pictures fund will finance. Dylan Russell, Peter Fruchtman, and Scott LaStaiti are executive producing. Reiner's Castle Rock and Gabriel Jerou from Southpaw will co-produce.

The project centers on a psychiatrist who does the one thing you are never supposed to do with your patients: talk about yourself. Production is planned for the fall in New York, and casting will begin immediately for the four leads, which include the psychiatrist, his wife, their daughter, and the patient's brother.

Reiner told THR he hasn’t returned to the genre in years because it’s hard to find a story that he hasn’t seen before. “They are hard to make well, but this one has a deep psychological bent to it and a big twist in the end that I didn’t see coming,” he says. "That's why I decided to take a whack at this one."

It definitely has our interest - look for more soon.

American Horror Story Writer Describes Jessica Lange's and Adam Levine's New Characters

$

American Horror Story Gets Skinned - Britne OldfordCurious about what direction "American Horror Story" will be taking with Jessica Lange's new character in Season 2? What about Adam Levine's role as one of "The Lovers"? Well, writer Tim Minear dished some dirt to MTV, and we have the highlights right here.

"She's not playing this kind of ersatz Tennessee Williams character this time," said Minear of Lange's Season 2 transformation. "She's playing something that's a little more East Coast, a little more patrician. She's playing a nun... an administrator of a facility. It's different. In this instance she's a bride of Christ."

As most viewers are aware, Season 2 will take place in the 1960s on the East Coast with a mental institution as the setting for all the creepiness. And that drastic shift from the Season 1 locale of sunny Los Angeles was planned by its creators all along. "The truth is", Minear recalled, "when I first met with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk about the show, I came in, I read the pilot script, and I'm like, 'Okay, guys, this is all very well and good — I don't know how you make this into a TV show. I don't know how you sustain this. And Ryan immediately had the answer, and that was, 'Oh, the way we sustain it is by the end of the season, we have killed off every character.' And I'm like, 'I'm in!' And then you revamp it. Basically, in Season 2 you have a whole new story, a whole new location, a whole new time frame. You just do something different," he added. "The reason we're doing it in the 1960s is because that fits the story that we want to tell."

And Levine's part in that story? When asked about the Maroon 5 leading man, Minear noted, "Let's say that Adam's character is kind of a nod to contemporary sensibilities, as opposed to something from the mid-century."

As for whether there's any chance that the infamous Season 1 "Murder House" might make a cameo, "I wouldn't rule anything out," Minear shared.

"American Horror Story" returns this fall. Along with Lange and Levine Season 2 stars include James Cromwell, Joseph Fiennes, Zachary Quinto, Chloe Sevigny, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, and Lizzie Brochere.

B-Sides: T-T-T-Toxic Avenger!

Melvin worked at the Tromaville gym, a 90-lb. weakling who got pushed around. They dressed him up in a pink tutu. They beat him up, and they threw him down. He landed in a barrel of waste. Toxic chemicals ate his face. Mutating, energized by Tromatons… This Jersey hero's gonna clean up the place! T-T-T-Toxic Avenger!

It dawned on me that I’ve been doing these B-Sides for so long now, and somehow Troma has gone grossly unrepresented. That gets corrected today with Scott Casey’s hard-rocking Toxic Avenger theme song from The Toxic Avenger Part II. It’s arguable that this song is even better than the Tromatic 1989 sequel itself.

To my disappointment nobody has put out a music video of “The Toxic Avenger Part II Theme” using clips from it or any of the various Toxic Avenger movies. On the plus side, that means you can listen to this song and the video is actually safe for work. On the bad side, if any of your coworkers hear you listening to this song, they may start asking you questions you aren’t prepared to answer.

Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder Coming to Blu-ray in 3D; House of Wax Is Next

Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder Coming to Blu-ray in 3D; House of Wax Is NextAlfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder is not only getting own October 9th Blu-ray release courtesy of Warner Brothers, but it's coming to us in 3D. And believe it or not, it's not a conversion! Read on for the details.

According to Warner Home Video's Executive Vice President and General Manager of Theatrical Catalog, Jeff Baker, "Given the current trend toward 3D, we're delighted to be releasing this authentic classic 3D. This is not a conversion from 2D to 3D, but an original work, with a big tip of the cap to MPI, that illustrates just how good 3D can be. The Warner library has the largest number of classic 3D titles (15) of any studio, and over the years we've been looking to release them, but not until now has the technology been perfected to the point we can do that. We're hoping Dial M for Murder is the first of several classic 3D films to be released, with the long-awaited, much requested House of Wax expected next."

High Def Digest says that while the exact specs have yet to be revealed, supplements will include Hitchcock and Dial M, 3D: A Brief History and the original theatrical trailer. The suggested list price for the Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray release is $35.99.

For those unfamiliar with the film, it's about a man who plots to murder his wife. It stars Ray Milland, Grace Kelly, and Robert Cummings and is currently ranked #194 on IMDb.com's Top 250.

EW is on a bit of a roll this week as they've scored the first two images from A&E’s “Coma,” a modern day retelling of the Robin Cook novel and iconic film by Michael Crichton.

From the Press Release:
Produced by Ridley and Tony Scott, the two-night "Coma" event premieres this Labor Day on A&E. Fans walking the grounds outside of Comic-Con can join the thriller experience of “Coma” from Thursday, July 12th, through Saturday, July 14th, from 11:00 am–9:00 pm on First Avenue and J Street right outside of the San Diego Convention Center. Doctors will be handing out patient bracelets for admittance to the 15,000 square foot “Jefferson Institute,” the ominous leading institute in coma patient care from the mini-series. The “Coma” Experience is free and will include:

Reception - Participants will be greeted by Jefferson Institute nurses who will admit them into The “Coma” Experience. The nurses will guide the visitors to the security monitors so they can get a glimpse of what they’re about to step into as well as see exclusive, first-look footage from the mini-series.

Surgery - Nurses will then take fans to the experiential surgery room where they’ll meet surgeons who will decide if they’re good candidates for the tour. If so, fans will have the option of getting a 3D surgical scar tattoo.

Area 2 - As part of the experience, visitors will be allowed to access The Jefferson Institute’s highly secured Area 2, where they will get a glimpse of the doctors at work. In this room Jefferson Institute human specimens will be on display designed with the chilling look and feel that’s authentic to the mini-series.

Area 8 Green Screen - Finally, visitors will be able to step into Area 8, which will be the end of The Jefferson Institute tour. Area 8 will offer visitors the opportunity to get an up close and personal view of an actual “Coma Pod” that was used in the Ridley and Tony Scott production. In addition, visitors may participate in a green screen photo opportunity that places them into the iconic Coma Pod as if they themselves are the victims of The Jefferson Institute.

A&E Wants to Send You Into a Coma This Coming Labor Day

For a fully immersive experience that extends beyond Comic-Con, fans can go to ComaConspiracy.com, where they will activate a thrilling digital experience. The hacker activists that are trying to take down The Jefferson Institute in the mini-series will invite visitors to join their cause, and opting-in will launch a highly-targeted digital cat-and-mouse game that pulls fans into the heart of the Coma Conspiracy. Here, participants will feel first-hand what it’s like to go up against the all-knowing, all-powerful, and heavily financed Jefferson Institute.

“Coma” is a two-night special event starring James Woods, Geena Davis, Richard Dreyfuss, Ellen Burstyn, Lauren Ambrose (“Six Feet Under”), and Stephen Pasquale (“Rescue Me”) premiering on A&E, Monday, September 3rd, and concluding on Tuesday, September 4th, at 9:00 pm ET/PT each night. In “Coma” a young doctor (Lauren Ambrose) discovers that something sinister is going on in her hospital after routine procedures send more than a few seemingly healthy patients into comas on the operating table.

“Coma” is produced by Sony Pictures Television for A&E Network. Executive producers are Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, David W. Zucker, Martin Erlichman and Mikael Salomon.

Jeffrey Combs Offers Motivational Growth In This Teaser Trailer

Okay, so I'm cheating a little bit because Jeffrey Combs isn't actually in the teaser trailer. But he is in the film, and I'll admit that this teaser certainly captures one's attention. So come on in and check it out anyway. It certainly looks promising!

The premise is as follows: Ian Folivor (Adrian DiGiovanni), depressed and reclusive, finds himself taking advice from a fungal growth after a failed suicide attempt. The Mold (Jeffrey Combs), a smooth talking chunk of aspergillus born from the filth collecting in Ian's neglected bathroom, works to win Ian's trust by helping him clean himself up and remodel his lifestyle.

I'm not the biggest fan of low budget indie horror in this modern age, I'll admit. More often than not it looks like filmmakers don't have a clue what they're doing. But Motivational Growth looks different. The teaser doesn't show much, but it does hint at an energetic and stylish movie that, from what I've seen, shouldn't have much trouble standing out from its peers. Stick with this teaser, and be sure to post your thoughts below.

I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this one.

The Walking Dead Limited Atticus Shirt Makes Zombies Look Classy

Sometimes horror fans don't feel like rocking the traditional black t shirt featuring their movie of choice. Sometimes we'd like the option to dress a bit classier while still wearing our warped little hearts on our sleeves. That's where this stylish little number from Atticus comes in.

That's right, folks. This limited edition San Diego Comic Con polo shirt exists in real limited quantities. Only 250 of these beauties were made in collaboration for the release of the 100th issue of The Walking Dead comic. If you want one you've got to swing by The Walking Dead Comic Con Booth #2729 and be among the lucky ones. The folks at Atticus say the shirt is also available via their official website, although I was unable to find it offered there.

Either way, this is a cool one, and I hope more companies will take note in the future. Sometimes I might enjoy a round of golf, and I'd love it if I could get a Lacoste shirt in which the alligator insignia gets swapped out for a little Jason mask. Or Michael Myers. Or Freddy. Or Pinhead. But you get the idea. Somebody please make this happen!

Good on you, Atticus, the horror community needs more of this.

Dig on the First Clip From Dredd

Believe it or not the buzz around Dredd here at Comic-Con has been surprisingly positive. Expect a review from us soon. In the interim check out the very first clip from the flick right now. Gotta admit, we like what we see.

Karl Urban stars in the title role along with Lena Headey, Olivia Thirlby, and Domhnall Gleeson. Look for it in theatres on September 21st.

Synopsis
The future America is an irradiated wasteland. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington, DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury, and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture: a 200-story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and director Pete Travis bring Dredd to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film. Filmed in 3D with stunning slow-motion photography sequences, the film returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's revered comic strip.

San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Jamie Bradshaw Talks Branded

$
0
0

The roving man on the scene Evan Dickson caught up with director Jamie Bradshaw to shed some light on the giant sized creature feature Branded. Read on for all the latest details.

Ed Stoppard, Leelee Sobieski, Jeffrey Tambor, Ingeborga Dabkunaite and Max Von Sydow star. Check out the goods, which have a very distinct They Live kind of flavor to them. Look for more on this flick, which was co-written, produced and directed by marketing executives Jamie Bradshaw and Alexander Doulerain, very soon!

You used to work in marketing. Was there something about your job that disenfranchised you and inspired the critique in Branded?

"I wouldn’t call it a critique of marketing. I would call it a mind bending journey through our very dark and hallucinatory world. It’s a dark place but it’s the world we live in. I’m not criticizing it. To criticize marketing is to criticize the world. I feel you like you don’t criticize the fundamentals of the world you live in. You express the way it is. It’s the way we’ve chosen to live our lives."

Everyone is complicit in it.

"We live in an era defined by that complicity. The model of advertising is different now. Social media has changed us all into brands and we spread the advertiser’s word for free. We are making the system, authorizing it and making it a success.

And how does this play out in the movie? How does someone navigate it?

"The dark and mind bending journey that the hero of this film has to go through takes him through ancient rituals that are graphic in nature that allow him to tap into powered that we don’t see that we have. Powers that allow us to redefine ourselves as people and to fundamentally change the world we live in. There’s a lot we don’t know about being human. There’s a lot we can learn that can empower us to change the world and become true individuals."

The film looks pretty epic in scope.

"We tried to put every dollar we could onscreen. Most films pay so much up front for stars or directors, 95% percent of our budget went below the line. We made a movie that was epic in scope and is R-rated. We ca show a lot more. The content is often ambiguous. The dark, weird rituals. In the middle of nowhere with a cow and an axe. Stuff you can’t do here."

Were you inspired by They Live at all?

"I don’t think it’s an inspiration. It’s an influence. John Carpenter is a great director and They Live is a very strong film. I think both films are trying to look at the world that affects us. But the world has changed so much since then. That kind of story structure and style doesn’t apply anymore, because we’re all more complicit [than the characters in that film]. I tried to make a very entertaining edge-of-your-seat film that you can go see on a Friday night but that still makes you think. There’s some visual stuff in here that I have literally never seen. It’s so graphic and powerful"

Look for Branded in theatres in September of 2012.

Synopsis
BRANDED is a dark and mind-bending journey into a surreal, dystopian society where corporate brands have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds and keep the population disillusioned, dependent and passive. One man, Misha's (Ed Stoppard), passion to unlock the truth behind the conspiracy will lead to an epic battle with the hidden forces that really control our world.

Dexter The Game 2 Stalks Its Way To iOS and Android This Fall

Good news for fans of the original iOS Dexter game from 2010 - a sequel is on the way! Even better? Android users can finally join in on the hunt. Read on for the skinny!

From the Press Release

Ecko|Code and Showtime Networks today announced that Dexter The Game 2, the sequel to 2010’s Dexter The Game, will arrive on iOS, Android and PC this fall to coincide with season 7 of DEXTER, which premieres on SHOWTIME on September 30th at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Developed internally at Ecko|Code in conjunction with SHOWTIME, Dexter The Game 2 puts players in the shoes of America’s favoritevigilante in an open-world Miami. Dexter navigates the city in his own signature style. Crime scenes will be investigated with the knowledge that the serial killers who have evaded Miami’s Police Department will be stalked and given their comeuppance by Dexter's Dark Passenger. Series star and executive producer Michael C. Hall has provided the voice of Dexter Morgan and has been a close collaborator in the game’s development.

“The fan’s main comment about the original game was that it was too short. With Dexter The Game 2’s procedurally created serial killers and cases, the player will never run out bad guys to stalk and crimes to solve,” said Marc Fernandez, Chief Creative Officer of Ecko|Code. “Exploring a richly detailed and vast Miami through Dexter’s eyes is thrilling.”

"Over the years we’ve worked closely with Ecko|Code to experiment with how fans enjoy experiencing Dexter’s world in the digital space," said Laura Palmer, Senior Vice President, Distributor Marketing, Showtime Networks. “Combining the freedom and the dark humor and suspense of the series, Dexter The Game 2 is unquestionably the most ambitious project yet.”

Showtime To Sleep No More

$

Showtime is in desperate need of another 'cash cow' now that Dexter is winding down. As such they're developing a new supernatural series that has a very impressive pedigree behind it.

This new series, titled Sleep No More is being developed with Hung co-creators Dmitry Lipkin and Colette Burson. The show is set in a mysterious small town where the dead are returning to life. Not much else is known about it at this time, but the premise can't help but remind of of Dead & Buried, and that alone is enough to make me curious.

Lipkin and Burson will do double duty as writers and executive producers. We're still in the early stages of this one, but don't fret. We'll keep you appraised of all things Sleep No More as we hear it. In the meantime, take two minutes and savor this excellent trailer for Dan O' Bannon's 80s classic Dead & Buried. Not sure how this kind of a premise could sustain an ongoing television series, but I'd sure like to see someone give it the college try.

San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Charles de Lauzirika and Josh Lawson Talk Crave

$
0
0

Today at Comic-Con Evan Dickson sat down with director Charles de Lauzirika and star Josh Lawson to get the skinny on the upcoming flick, Crave. Read on for all of the latest on what to expect from this new fright flick.

First of all. That scene in the trailer where Josh puts the shrimp in his mouth then puts it back on the buffet is crazy.

Charlie: That was entirely Josh. It wasn't in the script and he did it on the day. But it's such a great snapshot of the mind of the character.

This movie seems like it has a bit of Dirty Harry and Death Wish in its heart, but against the entire world. What inspired it?

Charlie: I wanted to do something lean, mean quick and dirty. And my neighbor at the time, Rob Lawton, had something that he pitched to me as Travis Bickle meets Walter Mitty. A cracked, disturbing character that gets lost in his own world, these flights of fancy. All of these dark sexual and violent fantasies are in his head. And that was the original thrust of the vigilante stuff of the film. But the romantic relationship in the film adds some extra flavor to that.

Josh, what was your approach to such a sick character?

Josh: It was really unusual and unique. Detroit is such an overwhelming presence, particularly at that time of the year. And that really helped. Charlie had a very specific idea of what the film was going to look like and who the character was. It was a hard character to shake at the end of the day. You'd go back to your hotel and you'd feel really heavy. It was a really dirty film to swim through. But every time it felt like that it felt like we were onto something dark. In a good way. Aidan's mind is so murky and so dangerous it's a weird place to stay.

The film looks pretty intense. What was your approach to the tone and violence?

Charlie: It's interesting because people would ask me about the tone and I'd say, "well what tone is Fight Club?" Because that film has drama, action, horror, sex and comedy. All of those things. And Crave is kind of like that too. Not in its worldview, but in terms of its playful nature in hopping genres. It's all through the cracked prism of Aiden's mind.

Detroit looks pretty creepy in the film as well.

Charlie: Detroit is so economically depressed. There's all these ruins that are completely post apocalyptic.

Josh: It literally looks like a zombie apocalypse.

Charlie: But there's a beauty there too. You can set scenes in so many unexpected locations.

Given the extreme nature of the film, was there ever a point where you felt where you were going too far? Did you ever have the urge to pull back?

Charlie: What's the line?

Yeah. And did you cross it?

Charlie: I'm not sure if I did. I tried to stay to the script and embrace the happy accidents. You can make the scariest stuff not scary [if you're not paying attention]. But you can also make the simplest stuff scary too.

What was it like having Ron Perlman onset?

Charlie: He shows up and the character is there. It's amazing.

Josh: He came to set and he wanted to work. He cares about the product.

Charlie: There's a great diner scene with them. It's the one of the only moments in the film where we just let the camera sit there and just be there with the performances for however many minutes that scene is.

Josh: He's a powerhouse. Such a brave actor.

Crave stars Ron Perlman, Josh Lawson, Emma Lung, and Edward Furlong.

Neil Gaiman Returns To The Sandman

Sometimes it just feels right to go home again. Such was the case today when Neil Gaiman announced he'd be returning to the world of The Sandman for a 2013 miniseries.

Gaiman created The Sandman twenty-five years ago, and the book has stood the test of time and enjoyed the prestige of being one of the best graphic novels ever written. Will Gaiman's follow-up reap the same accolades? No pressure, Neil!

From The Press Release

Twenty-five years after one of the most celebrated graphic novels of all-time hit shelves, award winning and critically acclaimed author and screenwriter, Neil Gaiman, announces his return to THE SANDMAN. Gaiman made the surprise announcement, via video, at DC Entertainment’s Vertigo panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Karen Berger, Executive Editor of Vertigo, then revealed that Gaiman is paired with artist, JH Williams III (BATWOMAN) for the series, who appeared on stage to an already stunned and elated crowd. THE SANDMAN mini-series will be published by Vertigo in 2013.

One of the few graphic novels ever to be on the New York Times Best Seller list and lauded by critics the world over, THE SANDMAN is credited with changing the path of storytelling in the comic book industry. Gaiman will pick up his pen for the first time in more than 10 years since ending the series to continue a story that he feels still has yet to be told.

"When I finished writing THE SANDMAN, there was one tale still untold. The story of what had happened to Morpheus to allow him to be so easily captured in THE SANDMAN #1, and why he was returned from far away, exhausted beyond imagining, and dressed for war. It was a story that we discussed telling for SANDMAN's 20th anniversary... but the time got away from us. And now, with SANDMAN's 25th anniversary year coming up, I'm delighted, and nervous, that that story is finally going to be told,” said Gaiman.

"There's nothing like a Neil Gaiman story," said Berger, "and there's nothing like having Neil back home on THE SANDMAN, his dark, soulful, literary epic that transformed comics and continues to captivate countless new readers year after year. Working with him again, and with JH Williams, the extraordinary and groundbreaking artist, is truly the stuff dreams are made of."

DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio added, “As accomplished as Neil Gaiman is in other media—whether it be novels, film and even music—he still has an incredible passion and love for comics. It’s exciting to have him back. J.H. Williams will be the perfect complement to Neil’s writing. He has a history of creating art that pushes the boundaries of the medium.”

Each issue of THE SANDMAN mini-series will be published day-and-date digitally. The title will be announced at a later date.

We'll probably never get a Sandman movie that does the source material justice, but I always enjoyed this fan-made trailer that captures the essence of the book rather nicely.
